I am currently 7 months pregnant. We are really looking forward to No 2 arrival. In particular both my friend (who is 6 months pregnant)& I am getting fed up with being refered to as huge - if you are talking to a pregnant Mum are a Toddler group or activity, try having a little tact!

jodee -congratulations! And don't worry, Lemsip is paracetamol which is safe to take in the first 2 trimesters.

EmmaM · 15/02/2002 13:57

Congratulations Jodee! I'm sure LB (little blob!) will be just fine! Its OK to take paracetamol in pregnancy, and I'm sure the cheeses were just fine. The week before I found out I was pregnant it was hubby's birthday - we got completely and utterly, falling down p***, smoked ourselves stupid and didn't get any food that evening. The next day was followed by many hangover cures. You'll be fine, its just the hormones!

ChanelNo5 · 15/02/2002 14:39

Jodee - That's wonderful news - congratulations. Don't worry about little blob, he/she will be fine. Before finding out I was pg with all 3 of mine, I always seemed to have got very p**d, hungover, taken various medicines that you should use with caution during the first trimester, and eaten excessive amounts of pate, soft cheese and all the other things you aren't meant to have and they've all turned out fine.

Marina · 15/02/2002 14:42

Jodee, that is wonderful news!
The other have already said it - if you are going to consume interesting things in pregnancy, now is the time to have done it, before LB really gets down to business.
There was a case of listeria in pregnancy in France within the last couple of years, and it made headline news there, I think, because it was so rare. And that is with them having access to a huge assortment of mouldy delicacies.
All the best.

Ems · 15/02/2002 14:54

Jodee, thats great news. Keep well and look after yourself and littleblob.

Joe1 · 15/02/2002 15:23

Well done Jodee. As you can see there are a few of us in the early weeks of no2 and are all worrying silly so you are now officially a member of the Worry Club

MotherofOne · 15/02/2002 19:34

Jodee - great news, congratulations!
Like everyone says don;t worry about the cheese etc - I'm sure it was fine, and you'd be ill if there was a problem.
On the Lemsip front, might be worth checking if it has decongestents in as well before taking any again during your pregnancy - I know I was advised against anything other than plain paracetamol tablets. However, don't worry about the dose you've taken if it has got other stuff in, I'm sure the issue is if you've taken a lot throughout a whole pregnancy.

I was out for dinner a couple of nights ago at Cafe Rouge and had fish cakes (which sounded safe..) but turned out to be prawn & salmon. Three hours later I ended up throwing the whole lot up! I feel fine now, but does anyone think I should be seeing the doctor/midwife to check all is OK (18 weeks pregnant)?

jodee · 15/02/2002 19:35

Thanks everyone, for your good wishes and reassurances, I feel less of a panic pants now!

ChanelNo5 · 15/02/2002 21:11

Motherofone - When I was about 10-11 wks pg with my no.2, I had really bad food poisoning (lasted for about 3 wks altogether) which turned out to be caused by campylobacter (this is found in raw chicken and faeces - nice eh, I don't even want to think about where I got it from, but I was on holiday at the time, so eating out and having lots of takeaways etc) I was really worried about whether the baby would be affected, but my GP assured me that it wouldn't be harmed. He was right, she was born a normal, healthy 8lb 3oz baby. Your little one is well-protected, but you unfortunately are not. Hope you're feeling better now!

MalmoMum · 15/02/2002 21:52

Congrats Jodee! The last few months must have seemed very long. A generation or two back you would have to have killed a female rabbit or something to worked out you were pregnant at this stage. I would imagine that most people waited and wondered and had the odd port and lemon. It would seem that you have enough time to correct any errors.

For what it is worth to you, I back the Pupuce school of eating and feel it is better to eat a little of something good and enjoy it than to worry and suffer. Listeria test are relatively new.

Dixie · 18/02/2002 14:40

What I didn't get up to in the 1st few weeks from conception to realising I was pregnant is really the point I'd like to make...I ate wrong things, smoked all day, I drunk myself silly at a party, had untold medicines for a cold & even went on the pepsi big one at blackpool six times (loads of warning signs about not riding if pregnant) BUT I DIDN'T KNOW. I spoke this over with my doctor & midwife & they reassured me that worse things happen and not to feel guilty as I didn't know I was pregnant I couldn't avoid the bad things but had I stopped when I found out.....YES so I had done all I could do with the info I had!

CathB · 26/02/2002 13:25

Two questions for all for you who have done this second time around. One is semi-serious. If you have had a large baby first time around, what is the likelihood of it happening second time? Does it depend on the gap between them?

The other is fairly frivolous - do you get a second set of stretch marks?

Snugs · 26/02/2002 21:04

CathB, can't answer 1st question as both kids average weight but 2nd: YES

I got stretch marks left side only with 1st DS (where he kicked most) and a mirror image set with 2nd DS, who was more of a boxer than a footballer!

Pupuce · 26/02/2002 21:14

CathB... I am not sure the answer to both questions... but your midwife should know the answer to the first. As for the second... my strech marks disappeared both times... so maybe yours will to ?

Cath, my babies got smaller, with the fourth being 1.5lb lighter than the first. The major stretch mark damage was done in my first pg, I don't think it got much worse with later pg's. HTH.

  1. My babies got heavier with each pregnancy (unfortunately so did I!!)
  1. Like Suedonim, the worst stretch mark damage was in the 1st pregnancy.
CathB · 27/02/2002 13:07

Thank you for all your thoughts. I am hoping that Rozzy is right and its not just size! dd was 9lb 12 oz and the wrong way round (posterior? anterior??)so we did the whole induction, failure to progress, C-section routine. I am hoping that all the chasing after a (now average size) toddler will ensure this one is better placed if the same size! I suppose what still bugs me about this is that throughout my pregnancy I kept asking how likely a big baby would be (dh and bil being 9 lb 10 and 9lb ll), and nobody figured it out. EVEN WHEN THEY BROUGHT THE DATES FORWARD !! My midwife said, "if that baby is bigger than 8lb I will resign"... I just think I would have been more prepared if I had known!

fairy · 27/02/2002 22:35

First ds was 10lbs 5ozs and was induced ,took 8 hours from beginning of being given the drip. My second ds was 8lbs 12ozs and not induced and popped out very, very quickly, first one had done all the hard work.

Both were 10 days overdue, hope this is of some help.

Dixie · 25/03/2002 16:50

I've still got a fair bit of time to go (12 weeks)but have started wondering that maybe I should be looking into the practical side of preparing for a 2nd child. I know I don't need to buy ALL the stuff again but I don't want to lull myself into a false sense of security that I don't have to get too much & put it off too long...So mum's of more than one, what advice would you give??? I know I don't need cot, car seat, blankets, snow suits but what should I re-do, is it okay to use the mattress from 1st child (it's 2 years old, has a removeable cover that can be machine washed at 60 degrees so I thought it would be ok, is it okay or should I get a new mattress?) Also should I really be ordering a double buggy type thing. My ds is 2 years old, obviously he walks well but he also runs and can be very fast & curious when out but I don't want to buy a double buggy & then never use it...

advice very very much appreciated!

Demented · 26/03/2002 14:03

Dixie, I am in much the same situation, 2nd baby due in 10 weeks. My ds is three and I have bought a buggy board to go on the back of the pram, it would be even more pointless for us to buy a double-buggy but even still feel that ds could do with the buggy-board for the mornings we are in a rush to get to playgroup and times when he is too tired to walk etc. I am also intending using the old cot mattress as it was quite an expensive one with a washable removable cover etc. I have read conflicting advice re this and would also be interested if anyone has any views.

Dixie · 26/03/2002 14:19

Demented, I have seen those buggy boards but fear my little runaway would do just that, he is a dear, loveable chap but so fast & curious I think he'd be off in a shot, I think I may need something with a harness. Maybe your 3 year old is just that bit older that it may actually work out for you? I'm hoping the more experienced 2nd timers gone before us will give some much needed input?

Azzie · 26/03/2002 15:12

I used a buggy board for ds when dd came along, and also a combination of sling (when dd was tiny) or backpack, plus layback stroller. This meant that when ds wanted to walk he could, but if he got really fed up dd could be carried while ds took over the stroller. It worked remarkably well, and it wasn't a problem carrying the backpack around because I would have had to carry some sort of rucksack anyway with nappies, food, bibs, beakers etc. We bought a 2nd hand double buggy but rarely used it.
