where were you when your waters broke??? im bricking it a bit here!!

ok, tomorrow i'll be 40 weeks (this is my first baby) and im getting more and more worried about going out incase my waters decided to flood morrisons or something lol. bit silly really, i know, but im starting to annoy myself with how much i seem to be worrying that i'll be out and about when my waters break.

so, i was just wondering...where were you when your waters broke, did you have any warning at all, and how was the situation dealt with??

both of my children were born in their waters. DS was born with caul intact
The midwife broke dd's as she crowned
Must have tough membranes

No warning as i was asleep both times lol. Dd was 4am in morn, woke up before hand though just got to toilet in time and GUSH!

Ds popped as i stood up getting out of bed at 8am.

I was in bed, and had been having mild contractions for approx 12 hours. But I too was anxious in the few days before that ( esp as I was overdue) that they'd go while I was in out

forewaters went somewhere between pet shop & a friends house...enough to wet my jeans , but not gushing...

rest went with a bang and a 2 foot gush across the room in labour!!

spontaneous rupture before labour is about 15 - 20 % chance i think,, so more likely to happen in labour than while you are out and about

My waters did not break with my ds but i did wake at 4am with contractions & a show,they broke my waters when i was in hospital.

With dd i had no show or waters just contractions, my waters poped when she was on her way out & i had a show about 20 mins before.

DD1 I was at home, and they flooded - I stood in a handy plastic box to protect the carpet!

DS went in the night with a trickle.

(dd2they didn't break at all)

mine went on the loo while i was suffering a bout of pregnancy-induced constipation...POP! quite convenient really. then got through a sanitary towel, jeans, a coat and a car seat in the time it took us to get to the hospital. i would now recommend anyone nearing their due date to carry a plastic bag to protect their car upholstery.

With both of mine they went whilst I was in bed -I woke up literally a second before they went whoosh!

A funny tip I read somewhere is to carry a jar of pickled onions around the supermarket with you so if your waters go you can drop the jar and no-one will no that the puddle on the floor is from you

DS1 - they broke - like Niagara Falls in my parents house - I was on my way down to the toilet and I felt 'something' - realised in the nick of time it was my waters (don't know how - it was my first baby and it was 12 days before my EDD!) got to the bathroom just intime to practically flood it. Mum walked in a few minute later and helped me 'clean' up.

Ds2 was much more subtle. Walking up the steps into church (where I'm the organist). Thought I needed the loo - but realised it was my waters trickling. Hot footed it down to the toilet at the other end of the church - used a whole roll of loo roll to shove in my knickers - told DH (who went off to try and phone one of my substitue organists - but failed) and went off to play for the service. Didn't move my ar*e for the whole service incase they decided to go like DS1's had LOL.

Ive only had my waters break once out of 4 pregnancys and that was DS2 and i was at home.Stood up to go for a wee and whoosh! No warning/contractions or anything.

thanks for the replies everyone

i didnt realise that more often than not they wont go untill your in labour! (clueless, i know lol)

so am i right in thinking that its more likely that i'll get contractions before (and if) my waters break??

Alfred - dh will ove that tip LOL!! think that i'll be keeping a plastic bag in the car from now on to put dh's mind as ease

wuzzle - I didn't have contractions before my waters went with either of the DS's........mind you I've not managed to go into labour on my own yet (although at least I did have some false labour pains with DS2 LOL). Hoping for a homebirth with this one - but if I just managed to get started on my own I'll be happy LOL.

Mine didn't break until DD was crowning.

Wouldn't recommend it but have been told if they go in Boots or Mothercare (and prob a few other places) you get loads of freebies for baby once born! .

So.... if you feel them about to 'go' when you are out rush to the nearest Boots . (Only joking!).

first time they had to be broken,
second time - started going in the bath and then popped about an hour before DS was born mid contraction and then just trickled.

statistically more likely you will have some contractions before your waters go.....but who knows! it;s part of the fun!!

try walking around harrods a lot...if your waters go there you might get a diamond encrusted baby sling!!

HRHQoQ - congrats on your pregnancy! a homebirth, i salute you! id possibly go for one if this wasnt my first, but as this is, im going to the hospital (where im sure the mw said i'll be on the midwifery led unit). when is yours due?? no contractions at all? how was that?

LOL @ getting freebies! brilliant. i can just picture it now. my waters popping as im strolling around the shops, me realising im in morrisons and madly trying to run to the nearest boots

thanks - still early days - only 7+6weeks (due 5th June). DS1 I never had any contractions at all - even after my waters had gone...they were going to induce but ended up with a CS (long story - which I'm not convinced about now - but hey it was 6yrs ago so not too bothered now).

DS2 - my waters broke, had false labour pains that night (after going to the hospital and being sent home) - then nothing until I was induced on the Wednesday.

It'll be a miracle if I managed to going into labour on my own this time - althougn more hopeful now I have at least had contractions (all be it induced ones) that my body will 'remember' and do it on it's own.

Sods law says I'll go 2 weeks over my EDD (both DS's were about 1 week early) and be induced again LOL.

The waters went first with both of mine, no warning, no contractions - they did't start until a few hours later.

With my first I was asleep, and the second I was on the loo anyway (well, had just stood up and suddenly had to sit down again very quickly!)

Am not due till Friday! But lady in Sainsburys told me if they go in there, I get free nappies for life!!!
