ok, tomorrow i'll be 40 weeks (this is my first baby) and im getting more and more worried about going out incase my waters decided to flood morrisons or something lol. bit silly really, i know, but im starting to annoy myself with how much i seem to be worrying that i'll be out and about when my waters break.

so, i was just wondering...where were you when your waters broke, did you have any warning at all, and how was the situation dealt with??

cheers all

Very boring - got contractions first at 5am on a Sat, waters "popped" at 11am lying on bed trying to rest - was surprisingly loud pop noise - dh heard it. Nothing dramatic, like M&S though.

beckybraAAARGHstraps · 23/10/2006 17:52

In bed. Both times. Something about lying on one particular side. After the midwife had had a quick shufti inside when I was in the delivery room, she told me to lie on that side and it would speed things up. And it did.

hana · 23/10/2006 17:54

was in labour room - had waters broken with all 3!

JoolsToo · 23/10/2006 17:56

dd1 - in the street outside home
ds1/ds2 in hospital

Apronscreams · 23/10/2006 18:01

3 times at home - with ds1, I stood up, waters broke ,he "fell" out!!! not meant to be scary - I had been in labour for a few hours midwives were there etc.

once I had them broken and dd2 was then born within minutes - I was in a midwife centre - but it was quite scary because they broke the waters and left to see to another woman, no-one expected dd so quickly - infact 10 minutes before I had told dh to phone friends looking after the other dcs and tell them it would be tomorrow!! she was born at 10.30pm

Apronscreams · 23/10/2006 18:02

There used to be a rumour that if your waters broke in John Lewis thay would give you 500pounds worth of stuff...dh used to suggest I go and wander round

DumbledoresGirl · 23/10/2006 18:11

Wuzzlefraggle, in your situation (the day before my first baby was due) I went to Sainsburys and did a week's shopping and nothing happened. Then, I woke up the next morning, got out of bed and felt a trickle! I ended up spending the next 2 days in hospital having my labour induced, and then 2 more days in hospital after the baby was born, so when I came out, most of the food I had bought had to be thrown out (dh had eaten none of it!)

With my other babies, the waters went whilst in labour in hospital.

princessmel · 23/10/2006 18:22

On bed in hosp with ds, I was induced but they went on their own during labour.
In my bed in the night at home with dd. Very exciting, not scary at all. I was just so pleased that I'd gone into labour all by myself, even though I ended up being induced again...mecconium in waters..long story...

poppiesinaline · 23/10/2006 18:38

All three of mine were broken when I needed to push. Never even crossed my mind that I would ever be 'caught out' Fortunately I never was.

incy · 23/10/2006 19:07

In hospital, late on in labour. Not very exciting !

disemboweledbint · 23/10/2006 19:09

i was asleep. i was awoken by a big contraction, a pop, ran to the loo and my waters came dribbling down.

expatmama · 23/10/2006 19:10

i have no idea when they went - i didn't notice, would have been in hospital though as i was induced.

similar scenario to apronscreams - i did have a prowl around the designer shops after my due date (irrational "i must have a new handbag as i can't buy anything else for myself cos i am so huge", needless to say i managed to restrain myself from buying anything in a moment of clarity) - remember being in louis vuitton and wondering whether i would get free bags for life if they went in there....probably more likely to have been asked to leave and never darken the door again. would have been worth any embarrassment to see the assistants faces though

pointyfangedWeredog · 23/10/2006 19:15

in hospital, an hour or so before the births (once artificially).

MumtoBen · 23/10/2006 20:03

In bed at 4.15am (before contractions had started). I would recommend buying lots of maternity pads and having a few old towels to sit on in the car (I saturated 2 large towels). Luckily labour started after a few hours - as I would have had to wait 2 days for an induction otherwise - not sure I would have had enough towels to mop up another 2 days worth of fluid!

MegaLegs · 23/10/2006 20:09

With DS1,2 and 3 they broke just as I started pushing (ds4 was a cs) I thought my waters had gone with ds1 but when I got to the hospital they hadn't, I'd wet my pants

taffy101 · 23/10/2006 20:20

I read somewhere that waters are more likely to break in the night - no explanation as to why though!! Maybe lying down position or something - who knows. Mine broke when MW examined me when I first got to hospital with dd. Am due day after you wuzzle and i hadn't given it any thought but now you've made me want to put bin bags all over my car.
My mum said hers broke with me as she stood up out of bed to go to loo and soaked her slippers and ended up going to hosp in flip flops - everyone thought she was clever as it was summertime and v hot.

Snowstorm · 23/10/2006 20:28

With DD1 they went just before the 'push' stage - I'd been standing up against the hospital bed and it seemed to absolutely flood the hospital room floor ... DH was pretty shocked and offered to clear up the mess, bless him! With DD2 it happened with the second push - shot out across the labour room like an opened fire hydrant (was on my back), quite spectacular I believe. DD2 came out on the 5th push - wheyhey!

Monkeychopsmummy · 23/10/2006 21:04

My waters broke at 10cm dilated as midwife was examining me - she told me they had broken but I didn't notice until I got more upright to start pushing. I hear you get Champagne if your waters break in M&S and baby stuff if they break in mothercare. Do they test it to make sure it is genuine waters not pee or someone faking it for the freebies with a water balloon up their skirt?

JiminyCricket · 23/10/2006 21:12

about one second before dd2 was born in the birthing pool after quite a long early labour and about four hours of esatablished labour, so didn't exactly take me by suprise! With dd1 they were broken artificially cos early labour very long, dd1 15 days late and I didn't say no.

Sophiev73 · 23/10/2006 21:14

Haven't read whole thread but I was asleep, then woke up, absolutely knew it was going to happen and stood up just in time - tidal wave!! DH arroved soon after with bucket and tens machine... a bit too early but hey, he tried!!

saadia · 23/10/2006 21:14

Both times at home

lucy5 · 23/10/2006 21:15

My fore waters broke while in the loo about 10 o'clock at night, just a trickle. Nothing else happened so I was induced 24 hours later and mw broke my waters.

CaptainCaveman · 23/10/2006 21:23

Do you know I don't know what happened to mine! Had elective cs as ds was breech with cord round his neck - I suppose they were sucked away but don't know if this happened prior to ds' arrival or if they cut me open, had a tidal wave like you see on Holby, then pulled ds out!

As I was numb from nipples down, I have absolutely no idea....must go and ask dh!
