Absolutely LOVE the name Lola but its my dogs name - considered changing the dogs name but we've had her 8 years and we keep forgetting to use another name!! DH likes Esme but i'm not entirely convinced, quite like Lyla as its similar to Lola but i'm going round in circles and getting nowhere fast. DH chose my DD's name so i want to choose this one!! Considered Lolita so i can shorten it to Lola after my dog has popped his clogs but my mum nearly fainted when i mentioned Lolita!!!

Any suggestions or views on any of the above? I actually cannot get anywhere with this muddle of names and can't seem to find any new ones either - my brain is like jelly at the mo!

Oh to be Sylvias Mother when she's older
Damn I love Dr Hook....

CristinaTheAstonishing · 14/09/2006 22:28

I didn't know that song, just read the lyrics here Sylvia's mother

sylvia is a wicked name. i know one who is in her early 40s and she is a very classy lady.

Rubystar77 · 14/09/2006 23:36

hi all, i'm stuck with names too..
lolabelle- you should go with lola if you feel this way, i'm considering Rocco for boy and its a family dogs name!
my daughter is Ruby-Star and i just couldn't get used to it at first now it really suits her, most people call her rubes, there were loads of stars the night i was deciding on a middle name so it was appropiate and she is a xmas baby.
i really wanted her to be Dolly so am hoping to call this one Dolly if girl , if partner agrees,!!!!
must have double barrel name tho like ruby star
either Dolly-Belle
or Dolly-Sky
or Mimi-Belle.
i named my friends little girl Belle (and wish i had saved the name for me now)
any suggestions any one?
got 12 weeks left to decide, want this one to have name as soon as its boon as Ruby* didn't have a name for 3 and half weeks...

CJinSussex · 14/09/2006 23:59

Rubystar77 - I have a friend called Dolly. She is greeted hundreds of times a day by people singing 'Hello Dolly'. She is thinking of purchasing a gun.

Lolabelle - you can't name your DD after the dog. Besides, Lola is probably going to burst through the top of the 'most popular names' list next year. In my DD1 Reception Class of 20 children, there are 4 boys called Jack. It's awful for them.

I do like the name Lolita, but then you have the whole literary thing...
Have always loved:
Camille
Zoe (Zoe Elizabeth was our girl name for this baby but then we found out it was a boy!)
Tallulah! - could call her Lulu, which I like

Lolabelle · 15/09/2006 07:14

Love Tallulah and Camille - very similar taste!! I love Mimi-Belle by the way - tres cute! Ruby Star is a lovely name!

DH and I went for Natalie Clare for our dd. Neither of us were into these really trendy names and wanted something a bit more traditional. If we have another girl, she will be called Amy.

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 15/09/2006 07:50

lola is really common now, tbh. you're tripping over lolas at the playground and thats in cardiff, ffs.

agree, choose a name you like that can be shortened to lola. Delores is quite nice, though it does mean "sorrow". hmmm.

I can't add any more suggestions (it took me long enough to think of names for my 4 dd's!) but have you seen this website ?

CarolinaMoon · 15/09/2006 09:03

Esme is lovely.

Lola will deffo get v v popular any minute now.

Dolores is a lovely name, v Catholic in a tragedy-queen type of way. Doesn't Llorena (which someone mentioned further down) have something to do with crying, in Spanish, too?

clemsterdarcy · 15/09/2006 09:53

Esme is from the French/Persian and means 'beloved'. I think it is growing in popularity.

Lila, Lilly, Lola, Ella, Evie, Matilda, Freya are everywhere right now (mostly through celebrity-naming and/or protagonists in novels ... hence Esme hitting the spot).

3andnomore · 15/09/2006 10:07

Rubystar...must admit am not keen on either mimi nor Dolly, sorry!
How about sticking with the precious stone theme and going for Amber or Saphire or Topaz? There are probably lots more names after gems...oh or maybe Gemma
I know a girl hwo had a Ruby and her other girl was called Xena...which works together...!

3andnomore · 15/09/2006 10:07

Jade would be another one that is a precious stone

Morningnewspaper · 15/09/2006 10:13

Iona?

nailpolish · 15/09/2006 10:16

i always thought Esme was short for Esmerelda

cece · 15/09/2006 10:25

Esme can also mean esteemed and no it is not short for Esmerelda! Originally came to Scotland in 16th Century and was used for boys and girls. Now mainly girls. Since having Esme I have met 2 others, both younger than her (she is 5). Oh and one of the midwives was called Esme who did my home visits!

cece · 15/09/2006 10:25

How about Isla? I have always liked it

nailpolish · 15/09/2006 10:26

i think you will find Esme is sometimes short for Esmerelda

how can it not be?

whats wrong with that anyway?

Greensleeves · 15/09/2006 10:28

How about Io?

cece · 15/09/2006 10:29

Esmerelda makes me think of witches! LOL. I am sure it is very nice and dd would love it to be her 'real' name LOL

cece · 15/09/2006 10:30

nailpolish - plus I get asked all the time

"oh is it short for Esmerelda".....
