Absolutely LOVE the name Lola but its my dogs name - considered changing the dogs name but we've had her 8 years and we keep forgetting to use another name!! DH likes Esme but i'm not entirely convinced, quite like Lyla as its similar to Lola but i'm going round in circles and getting nowhere fast. DH chose my DD's name so i want to choose this one!! Considered Lolita so i can shorten it to Lola after my dog has popped his clogs but my mum nearly fainted when i mentioned Lolita!!!

Any suggestions or views on any of the above? I actually cannot get anywhere with this muddle of names and can't seem to find any new ones either - my brain is like jelly at the mo!

Layla
Lottie
Lily
Libby

all very pretty

When I was young we got a dog who I called Chloe this was years before it was trendy and no one had heard of the name, of course it started to get v trendy and the number of people who would say "my DDs called Chloe" and someone else would say isn't it SK's dogs name!

DD1 middle name is Sadie after my gran and someone said thats my dead dogs name erm thanks for that!

Actually wish I had kept Sadie for DD2

I spent days trauling through all the local grave yards to find a pretty name... no luck, everyone around her was called Betty I think.

Apparently, Lola means "grand mother" in the Phillippines which is where my DP is from, so his Mum isnt too impressed we've chosen to call her first grand child, granny... oh well tough

anniediv · 14/09/2006 14:33

Lola means 'strong woman'

emzickle · 14/09/2006 14:34

Yes, as in the Phillippines - Head of the family...

Sunnysideup · 14/09/2006 14:35

I love the name Esther, I know it reminds people of Ms Rantzen but it is so pretty; I knew an Esther at college and she was gorgeous!

Also LOVE Violet as a name, and Viola.

Another one I really like is Louise (and in future years when dog has gone, Lola could be a shortening for that?)

CountessDracula · 14/09/2006 14:42

I met a Violet the other day (a baby) very cute!

DD is called Louisa which I like as it is actually not used that much but still sweet and old fashioned! Lots of good short versions

noddyholder · 14/09/2006 14:44

I love the name May,

Lolabelle · 14/09/2006 14:45

These are a great help, too many now - heads going to explode but i recon Lolita could be wierd and Lola is only a possibility if i change my dogs name and warn family!!!

Don't like ESme, like Lyla, don't like Lolita.

nailpolish · 14/09/2006 14:47

what about Clara

PeachyClairHasBadHair · 14/09/2006 14:49

You did better than me with the local graveyards Emzie, I keep getting Ichabod when I look around!

DS2 was supposed to be Aisha, which I still think is a gorgeous name; I did read a research project which suggested those with Islamic names tended to be excluded from shortlists of job applications which is a shame but i don't think it would stop me. Aisha Peach- sounds likea A) film star; B) recipe.

Too many louise's when I was growing up, but love Violet etc, though colours and flowers would be out anyway.

Best stick to boys, if I have another.

emzickle · 14/09/2006 14:52

violet makes me think of that horrible girl on charlie and chocolate factory... obnoxious

well im thinking Lola Elisabeth Grace...

then with a double barrelled surname, bless her, she'll never fit it all on a passport application form

CheesyFeet · 14/09/2006 14:53

I love Esme, Matilda, Edie, Esther

My middle name is Dorothy, I hated it for years but it's growing on me now.

lucy5 · 14/09/2006 14:55

My sister is called Esther and it was/is unusal in Uk. There are loads here in Spain, I was quite surprised. near where we live someone has graffitied [sp] Esther on a wall and my dd said "Umm, look isn't Auntie Esther naughty, she's been writing on walls"

anniediv · 14/09/2006 14:57

My grannie was Esther, I think it's very pretty.

PeachyClairHasBadHair · 14/09/2006 15:01

I had a great aunt edie. When she turned up, Mum'd lock the medicine cabinets and dad would call Psychiatric services to ask them to take her back

She was much loved, but no, not a name for me!

foxtrot · 14/09/2006 15:19

I'm afraid I know of an Esther known as Uncle Fester - not so pretty

squidgeymiller · 14/09/2006 15:20

sorry, haven't read full thread so sorry if I'm repeating, Lotta is lovely (can be on it's own or short for Charlotte) or any of the layla, leila, lilah names are lovely. I REALLY wanted to call dd Lola but DH put the kybosh on it as every time we mentioned it as a possible name people started singing copa cobana. It didn't really bother me but DH was having none of it. Ended up with Niamh which is completely different, as felt anything similar would always make me think of the name I couldn't have (iykwim). Might be worth trying to think of completely different names, maybe there's the perfect name out there?

The only thing I would say is think back to Indiana Jones 3 when IJ's Dad explains that "indie was the dogs name!"

not really advice but worth thinking of

Piffle · 14/09/2006 15:33

Liliana and Liliela are nice too
Gawd it will be so much easier if this baby is a boy, dp and I are set, we only have one name and we both agree.
with girls
oh I could easily name 75 and dp would easily name another 75.
He hates my girls names and vice versa
I named dd while he was out So he thinks this time it's all down to him...

nailpolish · 14/09/2006 15:35

my friend has a little girl called India

we all call her Indy

anniediv · 14/09/2006 15:36

Dh and I agreed he could choose boys names and I could choose girls. We have 3 dds
