Absolutely LOVE the name Lola but its my dogs name - considered changing the dogs name but we've had her 8 years and we keep forgetting to use another name!! DH likes Esme but i'm not entirely convinced, quite like Lyla as its similar to Lola but i'm going round in circles and getting nowhere fast. DH chose my DD's name so i want to choose this one!! Considered Lolita so i can shorten it to Lola after my dog has popped his clogs but my mum nearly fainted when i mentioned Lolita!!!

Any suggestions or views on any of the above? I actually cannot get anywhere with this muddle of names and can't seem to find any new ones either - my brain is like jelly at the mo!

Love Lily, Lyla/Lila or Molly, Ella, Ellie

I would be mortified if after all this someone i knew stole it 2 days before i gave birth to her!! I guess we spent the whole pregnany last time deliberating over names so i want at least two hot faves that i can just put by at the very least but its the dog thing i guess i have an issue with unless i change her name now and tell everyone and they can all think i am wierd but i'll just blame it on the hormones, the dog answers to Jay (as in J'Lo) so the dog won't care but i'm loving some of the ideas you ladies are giving me and i'll note some down for a discussion with DH tonight.
The interesting thing is that i have had bad feedback on Esme and on here its really positive which is good to know as its a grower i think...

Esme is gorgeous name - I would pick that if it were me.

I used to work with a Lolita - she was a pain in the neck .

Twinkie1 · 14/09/2006 13:34

Love - Harriet, Matilda (so I could call her Tilly)- trying to think of more but I can't. Thank god I am not having anymore kids!!

cowmad · 14/09/2006 13:34

if your so determined why not get rid of the dog!!!(LOL)
i like lola...i do!!

sorrell · 14/09/2006 13:35

Um, but the book INVENTED the name, I believe. The girl's name is Dolores and Lolita is the pet name used by the narrator (the middle aged paedophile in lust with her. So no, I wouldn't use it. Lots of beautiful language in the book though!

"Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta. She was Lo, plain Lo, in the morning, standing four feet ten in one sock. She was Lola in slacks. She was Dolly at school. She was Dolores on the dotted line. But in my arms she was always Lolita."

BonyM · 14/09/2006 13:35

Oh - and everyone shortened her name to Lol which isn't as nice as Lola.

Lolabelle · 14/09/2006 13:35

Haha thats the song i love!! Makes me smile and would love a girl i could sing that to - bloody dog never appreciates it!!!

Some lovely names here.

Dolores could also be Dolly which is cute...and (just maybe) Lola later on??

sorrell · 14/09/2006 13:36

Esme's quite posh and a bit trendy. I like it.

sancerre · 14/09/2006 13:36

ah X-post with sorrell...

bundle · 14/09/2006 13:38

Beatrice
Lucy
Madeleine
Dora

sorrell · 14/09/2006 13:38

Brilliant use of alliteration there, don't you think?

thirtysomething · 14/09/2006 13:43

Has anyone mentione Leila or Leah? The French have Lea (with an accent on the "e" pronounce lay-ah) which I think is beautiful.
Elena? (Spanish/Italian for Helena/Eleanor)
Other lovely and slightly unusual names which I've come across which arent't too over-used are Esther, Esme of course, Thea, Beatrice, Natasha, Rosa, Katja, Maya and Elisa.

Sorrell you are amazing - although still love the sound of it!! My igorant DH isn't familiar with the film but his mum told him and he looked at me like i was a disgrace for making him like it!! Esme is quite trendy isn't it - he loves it and despite my sister saying it makes her think of a square fat girl she went to school with - thanks Tash - i think it sounds classy and goes well with Amelia.

And yes i have considered getting rid of the dog but DH will divorce me first! SO glad i started this tread and you lot have helped more than all my family/friends so far even if i have no decision as such yet things are becoming clearer!! MOre aware now of teh fact that actually everyone does associate Lolita with wierdo perv man although the lead singer from teh Stereophonics has a Lolita Bootsy which made me smile!!

Oh, I love the name Esme....many moons ago, when I was still pg with es (now 10) I was on a bus and there was a family with 2 lil girls and one was called Esme...and I thought instantly that that is a gorgeous name...!
Other girlsnames I like are
Melina/Lina, Melissa, Anoushka, Tatyana, Shana...

Lolabelle · 14/09/2006 13:52

DH says Esther reminds of the Rantzen women - hes so annoying like that so i came up Esta and he pulled a face. He loves Esme and is warming to Lila but essentially i can persuade him to any name really unless it deeply offended him. Want something a bit original i guess - but without being wacky or made up if you know what i mean, liked Pearl for instance but really does not go with my surname nor does Edie whihc i also like..

I have a dd named Lola. About 2 weeks after she was born the ads appeared on cbeebies for Charlie and Lola . Oh well, whatever you name her someone or something else will have been called it before, so who cares? If you like it, call her it.

Beauregard · 14/09/2006 13:57

My dd2 is called Lola

hermykne · 14/09/2006 13:59

3andnomore and lola
my dd is called Esme and i love the name.
i heard it or read it years ago and it always stuck in my mind.
its an old name , i have since heard of 80/90 year old women being called it but then it wnet out of fashion. or just got forgotten

Lolabelle · 14/09/2006 14:00

Raine

Lolabelle · 14/09/2006 14:03

I do love Esme actually - i guess i put Lola on a pedestal because i knew i couldn't really have it and then Sara Cox had her girl Lola and i was SO gutted despite my little newborn Amelia being gorgeous and the name being gorgeous only i wanted that name!! Now i have a second chance i guess i feel i should use it but Esme is so pretty and quite uncomon compared to some and i'm turning a bit i think...!
Put it this way my username on here and everywhere is Lolabelle in honour of the name i love - how sad is that??!
