I always took a while to concieve - compared to friends and family. Between 6 and 12 months. Even though I knew when I "should" have been ovulating, and timed intercourse correctly etc.
Infact, even when we tried to concieve every other day (becuase we accepted that ovulation can be unpredictable!).
On top of that I had 3 (early) miscarriages, 1 before each liveborn child.
I asked my Dr for testing after the 3rd miscarraige - and was told "we know your system works, just keep trying" and I got NO testing!
After my 3rd child, I used "Depo Provera" as a contraceptive. This gave me terrible moodswings and horrendously high blood pressure (185 over 120!!!). The nurse giving me it kept asking "Do you normally get high bloodpressure in pregnacy?" (no I didn't!), as the depo is supposed to trick your body into thinking it is already pregnant therefore preventing ovulation.
I also got oedema (severe water retention), My wedding ring which is normally loose was practically embeded in my finger!!!
Anyway, 18 months after I finished the last course of depo, we had been trying to conceive and getting nowhere. I was now 36 years old and worried that time was running out.
I approached my gp, and was told "just keep trying".
I went to see a female Gp instead, who herself had been on fertility treatment. She referred me straight away to a fertility clinic.
At the fertility clinic, the did no tests to find out why I was infertile, instead they started me on Chlomid.
After my first month on chlomid, I was scanned to check I was not producing too many eggs. I was mortified to find it had not worked - I had produced NO EGGS that month at all!
They doubled the dose up to 100mg, and scanned me again the following month - I was so elated that I had produced TWO EGGS! .
I had a quick chat with the nurse before I left, saying "It's one thing me getting pregnant - but how do I stay pregnant" (referring to my miscarriages).
I was given a prescription of progesterone pessaries to use the week following ovulation (and the week before my next period would be due). I was also advised to take a baby aspirin per day, because I'd had no testing for the miscarriages, and she said it certainly wouldn't do any harm - but research had shown it did help a lot of women.
I was amazed that a "first response" pregnancy test taken 9 days after ovulation (and a whole WEEK before my period was due!) showed POSITIVE!
It's been stressful, as I've had spotting - but I have ONE baby growing now (was hopeful of twins but that was not to be - am just thankful to be pregnant at all!), and there is no obvious cause for the spotting.
I'm still on the aspirin and progesterone. I'm 14 weeks tomorrow!
Chlomid corrects MANY different problems surrounding conception (from simply not producing eggs, to making sure the eggs you produce are ripe enough for succesful fertilization, and correcting horomone problems such as "luteal phase defects".)
It really is a "wonder-drug" and works for MANY women!
I wish you every success.
