Hyperemesis Support

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

I used to include extracts from MOH's wonderful website
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
but I think that makes this link less visible so am merely putting the link. The information on this site is invaluable for sufferers, with information about medications, coping strategies, hospital admissions, useful links, advice for family members, and much more.

I would like to thank MOH and Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

Hi all
Sorry to hear so many of you are feeling awful :( puts my nausea into perspective at least. So the disappearing act was down to our holiday - which went surprisingly well! (Apart from water and sand phobic ds on a beach holiday...) I had thought it was the meds stabilising things, but we got back last night and I've been rushing around doing housework etc today and feeling increasingly worse :( so I think it was the doing nothing which kept things at bay.

Ah well, at least I had a few days off :) getting a bit worried about being back at work tomorrow now, but will see how I go. Nearly 9 weeks now and hoping it won't last for much longer.

I second osteopaths btw - just sorted my appt out with mine to keep on top of the SPD this time :)

Totesamazeballs · 04/09/2013 20:17

Welcome back Misty! We are about the same dates-wise.

I have been finding it easier to eat than drink.i feel that I am dehydrated - i know i am thirsty- but because I have been keeping some food down these past few days ketones are looking ok. Not sure how else you tell if you are dehydrated?

Sally - glad some relief is being had!

Jen - not sure what the quadruple test is..?

Meerka · 04/09/2013 21:26

If you pull the skin up from the back of your hand and it doesn't sink back like normal but sort of stays up or only sinks back very slowly, much slower than normal, that's dehydrated.

fortunately there's a lot of water in food.

Meerka · 04/09/2013 21:31

the NHS site gives a good outline for dehydration:

www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Dehydration/Pages/Symptoms.aspx

(when I look at it, the skin thing is for severe dehydration .. god, I had that for many weeks in the first preg. How on earth did my baby get through ... ! )

MurderOfGoths · 04/09/2013 21:40

Ah bollocks, got a load of those..

Oh btw, this is way way TMI but for those on ondansetron and/or steroids, is your poo green? Confused

Meerka · 04/09/2013 21:45

MoG, seems that confusion and lightheadedness and a couple of other symptoms could well come simply from having such a rough time. But if you have a lot of the symptoms ... well, it's probably good you're having the emergency tests tomorrow. Hope you're able to post how it goes. Good luck.

Totesamazeballs · 04/09/2013 22:24

Thanks for the link guys. I have the dark wee, dizziness and weeing less than 3 times a day but its probably not severe enough to warrant medical attention. Plus, my docs will just tell me to drink more Hmm

Totesamazeballs · 04/09/2013 22:26

Let us know how the tests go guys and good luck for going back to work Misty. MOG, you said you worked part time but even so I wouldn't consider going back until you are stronger .

MurderOfGoths · 04/09/2013 22:28

Oh no, I am (luckily in this case) disabled and unable to work. Never ever thought I'd be grateful for that!

Meerka · 05/09/2013 07:38

chuckles am in the same boat, MoG. Funny how it works isnt it? It's murder for income :( and for, eh, well I think that people need to work for some sort of satisfaction beyond just money. But just now and then it has dull-silver linings! Good luck today.

And good luck Totes

LucindaE · 05/09/2013 08:46

MOG Totes etc, that is worrying about how ketones can show as low, because one has eaten, even if y ou are very dehydrated. I do remember, could hardly forget, those headaches when I was very dehydrated and blurred vision, I was too vague to think of any skin tests as unfortunately, I think confusion comes, too, it can all add to a dreadful feeling that you are going a bit mad. I'll follow that link too, clever of you to find it. MOG the dark wee does sound like dehydration, surely?
Tallyra Are you out of hospital yet? How are things?
Sally I'm glad it's gone off again a bit.
Misty Welcome back - so glad you had a holiday and things aren't too bad.
How is Bunny and Dilsa andEveryone?
Feekerry Thanks for information - I'll do a new list soon!

Apologies if I've overlooked anyone.

Guess I shall find out today, apparently I should get my results later, so just waiting for MIL to come to look after DS. DH has to have a blood test too, so I wont be the only one being jabbed for once. Grin

Totesamazeballs · 05/09/2013 08:59

Let us know MOG. I woke up in the night feeling so thirsty. I keep dreaming about oceans and cups of tea...the latter of which I cannot stand right now!

Feeling guilty this morn as DH has stayed home from work this morning until MIL arrives. I just can't face looking after DS on my own. He isn't interested in his toys at the mo and needs to be outside and I can't face getting up!

I am however on day 3 of feeling like I have gone into more morning sickness mode. I have only puked twice and kept most stuff down. The nausea is still relentless but somehow the edge has been taken off. Perhaps an ominous sign as I should be in peak nausea time....I am not going for another scan so will just have to wait until 12 weeks. It wouldn't surprise me if something went wrong during week 8/9 - it seems a classic time for babies to stop developing.

I hope everyone has days as good as they can be under the circs!

ChocChaffinch · 05/09/2013 10:43

trying to keep sipping water and nibble stuff I love like choc raisins.

no my poo isn't green! that must be from the steroids, MOG!!

10 + 0 today. feels like a milestone. still figuring out optimum timings for ondansetron, how are you all taking them? before? after meals?
was sick twice yesterday, that's the worse Ive been whilst taking it.

Tallyra · 05/09/2013 10:47

everyone contradicts each other in hospital. one says drink something, the next says not that, just water. water isn't easy bit squash is better. and I'm wondering about jelly but there's no-one to ask. might just try. and I wish they'd put my drip back on, the beeping is driving me mad. my cannula hurts whatever anything new goes in too. gah! but there was heartbeat on the portable scan this morning.

Totesamazeballs · 05/09/2013 10:51

Yay! 10 weeks is a milestone! Well done Choc! I am half a week behind you. Got no idea on the meds front, sorry.

I have a tmi question. What fruit is good to puke? Tried apple this morn and it was traumatic with bits getting stuck in my throat even though I thought I had chewed properly. What is there that can come up more smoothly?

Also, what foods have a high water content and are easy to hurl?

Sorry for grim questions.

Tallyra · 05/09/2013 10:58

grapes? although nothing ever comes up for me, so i don't what they are like on the way up.

Meerka · 05/09/2013 11:01

well, not sure anything is easy to throw up. it all tastes god-awful then!

But foods with much water?

Watermelon seems the best. Cucumber, lettuce, oddly enough broccoli (lots of other nutrients in it too, if it'll stay down). Carrot but well, that's probably a bad one in the circumstances.

Yoghurt is good. Strawberries, normal melons, nectarines/peaches. supposedly pineapple but the acid in it is a bad idea, maybe. Raspberries. Looks like any soft fruit really.

Hope that helps a bit

Meerka · 05/09/2013 11:04

oh, peas and mushrooms are hard to digest so probably best to avoid them.

Looks like most fruits and veggies are quite good. Just an idea, might pureeing them help? messes up some nutrient/fibre content but it might be absorbed a bit faster and it's pretty liquid. Might be the wrong idea, just thinking of it cause everyone's a bit different at this stage. Atm I can't tolerate water but I can tolerate fresh squeezed orange juice (thank you husband)

bunnygoesbang · 05/09/2013 11:09

Hello all
Struggled to find new thread on phone.
Wanted to says since the drip and new pills I am feeling a lot better.
I also think it has lot to do with not doing anything as when I start housework the familiar nausea kicks in.
Bit uncertain about what to do about work next week.
I have had diarrhoea since I found out and thankfully the meds have had the size effect of stopping this whoop.
Hope everyone is finding ways of relief.
Still loving ice pops and melon

ChocChaffinch · 05/09/2013 11:25

god yeah Totes apples are absolute evil to puke. choke-tastic!!

and yet the thought of a big juicy pink one....

I can't eat ice cream it literally goes sour in my mouth. Sad I miss ice cream. I think about Ben & Jerry.
glad to hear you're a little better bunny

ChocChaffinch · 05/09/2013 11:28

I don't fancy fruit or veg at all. am mostly eating toast for breakfast, then cup of tea and a few biscuits, then choc raisins, then toast with cheese and pickle inbetween for lunch, then something for tea, pizza works ok ... am struggling to imagine a nice tea

also can't eat baked potato skin, and used to love it...nor crusts! feel like a right child but just can't eat them

LucindaE · 05/09/2013 11:34

Totes I wonder if a doppler would show heartbeat early and so reassure you? I didn't know about them, msyself.
Never worry about tmi quesitons - no such thing on here - and this answers Tallyra's question too, jelly seems good for rehydrating and along with ice cream I didn't find it offensive on the way up again.
I think RNJ had a nasty Ice Cream Experience on the principal's car, though...So agree about soft fruits, but as all fruit is a bit acid, I suppose the chances are quite high they will reappear. For some reason, a lot of people find flat full sugar coke far easier to take than water.
Bunny Sorry you had trouble locating the new thread, I hope we haven't left anyone behind...I'll go and post this link as the sole thing on a post on the old one. Hope you feel miniscuely better?
Jen How are matterson the bowels front? Well, more like back Wink
Hope Everyone is coping.

Im sorry Lucinda, in the middle of the fear and increasing illness, your comment about a nasty Ice Cream Experience on the principal's car had me in fits of giggles for some reason.

So nice to have a lighter moment.

Totesamazeballs · 05/09/2013 13:02

Thanks for the advice guys! I am just munching on some grapes now and they are surprisingly good. God I can't wait to be able to drink normally. I fantasise about standing in a waterfall of pure water, having it splash all around me and drinking it!

I didn't hear the one about ice cream and the car but I can imagine!!

Just for a bit of light entertainment, we could list things we can't wait to do when better...

  1. Wake up, go downstairs like a normal person (ie. not holding a bucket and clinging to the walls in a nausea induced haze) and have a cup of tea
  2. Drinking cup after cup of water
  3. Being able to go out and have fun with DS
  4. Eating cereal

Anyone else?
