Feel very nervous writing this. But I'm in my bold "sod the doctor" mood. Anyone joining me?

Eyelash? (after all, I consider it to be you who got me here in the first place )

Anyone else?

By the way Harman, I understand your reasons for not having the tests, but I feel like my mind will be at ease to have the Nuchal fold scan and hopefully (fingers crossed) find out that all is well. I wouldn't terminate in any case but feel I would rather be prepared for any bad news.

piglit · 11/03/2004 16:36

Turtle - what a nightmare! Why can't people be a bit more understanding??

by the way, for those of you who are feeling bloated and huge, the Gap do some excellent stretch trousers, they look sort of like track suit bottoms, really compfy and will keep on stretching throughout! Highly recommend them.

beansprout · 11/03/2004 18:06

Turtle - sorry to hear your hospital is so crap - what is it with these people?!!! I'm sure this all makes sense once you have done it a few times/are a doctor but for us scared first timers, it's all just unknown and my mind, left unchecked, coupled with my hormones, doesn't come up with reasoned arguments, just fears instead. A little bit of information (not to mention efficient administration) could really go a long way at this stage.

I think I knew after my first trip to the doctors that they would do some technical bits but for real support and information I would be relying on friends, family, books, internet - and thank God for all of those things, without which I'm sure I would be half mad by now.

At this stage I don't even know what tests I want - time for a chat with dp I think followed by a couple of calls to the hospital. What's a woman got to do round here?!!!!

We have also had the nuchal fold scan debate. Mainly as my uncle has Downs and so has my husband's nephew. We had a wonderful nuchal fold scan with ds2 which was great but this time as we are in a different borough and have to pay we have decided against it. We wouldn't terminate and I don't want the added stress if the results aren't what we would like. my sil also said at the weekend that she wishes she hadn't been forwarned (given a plus 50% chance of having a ds baby which was correct) as she felt she never enjoyed the pregnancy. But on the positive it was great getting the great odds I had last time (went from 1:300 to 1:18,000). Also beware that if you have less than unfavourable results the medical profession seem intent on pushing for further invasive testing which carry a miscarriage risk.

I am 36 btw so looks like most of us are 'older' mums.

Apologies for the long message.

Turtle35 · 11/03/2004 18:23

Eyelash - thank you for such great insight and info on these tests. I am finding this sight so valuable. I do know of quite a few woman around my age, usually younger who come out with high odds with the Nuchal and it worries them a lot. However with further testing they find it reassuring, I understand there is a 1% chance of m/c when going for further diagnostic tests, I guess you have to take this one step at a time.

Lordy, it's been like Piccadilly Circus on this thread today. Just want to say hello and congratulations to Beansprout, Turtle and Miffy.

It really does feel alarming how seldom m/w's gps want to see us doesn't it? Do they not realise we are the most important people in the world, doing the most important job???? They should be bending over backwards to pander to our every physical and emotional need

I went for my booking in yesterday. GP noted I'd had an emergency c section for my dd, and asked if I had any thoughts about this birth. I went all gungho and said bring it on, natural birth, I can do it, not scared....then came out and cried in the car, as I am scared and had just been trying to impress her.

beansprout · 11/03/2004 21:34

Toots - thanks for your congrats. Your message brought a tear to my eye. I could see me doing the same thing in an effort to be seen in what I think is the best light. Please do whatever is best for you - it doesn't matter what other people think, it's you that is important here.

Just got my first appt through - 25th March, so will be just short of 12wks. V relieved and happy, thanks for all listening to me today.

piglit · 12/03/2004 09:01

Delighted to hear that you had success beansprout!

Toots · 12/03/2004 09:15

Awww, beansprout, glad aboout your appointment, and thanks for the bigging up.

beansprout · 12/03/2004 10:30

Thanks piglit and toots - hope you are ok too.

Question: my skin is getting dry and itchy (and it isn't normally) - does anyone else have this or have you heard of it? Am not using anything different on my pg bod.

piglit · 12/03/2004 11:21

Beansprout - I had a rather attractive (not) big, dry, scaly and itchy bit on my thigh. It's clamed down now but I put loads of itch relief (E45) cream on it and it seemed to do the trick.

Toots · 12/03/2004 13:19

Yes. Am feeling like I've been roughed up with sandpaper, I'd take a coat of gloss extremely well.

beansprout · 14/03/2004 12:51

Horrible day yesterday, woke up to some bleeding (sounded exactly the same as Piglit's last week). Stopped, then started again. Spoke to a doctor on NHS Direct who said "well if you are going to abort, you will abort" (!!!!!) and told me to bed rest for up to 48 hours. Seems to have stopped today so am not really worried but do feel a bit shaken and very, very tired.

Seems that all that obsessive reading about m/c has come in handy as I sort of knew what the real danger signs would have been, but thankfully didn't have them. Also took comfort from Piglit being ok last week as mine was really similar, so thanks Piglit.

eyelash · 14/03/2004 17:05

Beansprout - I too have been there. Can you arrange a scan to check all is well? If nothing else it will give you some reassurance. Thankfully the majority of bleeding is fine. I have had it in all my successful pregnancies and you can take great comfort in not having any of the other symptoms. Take care of yourself.

HArman - how are you feeling?

Hope everybody else is fine.

beansprout · 14/03/2004 17:28

Thanks Eyelash. There was some more bleeding today, so on NHS Direct advice have been to A&E this afternoon. I have a scan at 2pm tomorrow which I hope will give me the reassurance I need. Really appreciate your message, just what I needed to hear. Thank you loads

motherinferior · 14/03/2004 18:46

Oh beansprout, really thinking of you. Everything crossed here

Toots · 14/03/2004 18:51

Thinking of you too, Beansprout [[[hugs]]]

piglit · 15/03/2004 09:00

Beansprout - lots and lots and lots of luck. You are doing exactly the right thing by going to get a scan. Don't forget to drink lots so your bladder is full. Thinking of you with everything crossed.

miffy2 · 15/03/2004 10:13

Beansprout, hope everything goes well at the scan today, fingers crossed for you.
Toots, I know of a few people who have had a vaginal birth after a C-section (both planned and emergency), and others who are planning it, so hopefully it is something you can work towards and talk about before the actual D-day.

The other thing is, it is so obvious from this thread that the first 12 weeks or so are fraught with worry, concern, lack of knowledge etc. Yet it is the time that a) we are reluctant to talk to people as it is 'early days', and b) we get such little support from medical people.

Toots · 15/03/2004 16:15

Beansprout, is everything ok?

Thanks for thoughts Miffy 2.

beansprout · 15/03/2004 17:06

Everything is fine!!!!!! The little bean is dancing away and I even have a photo!!

Am so, so relieved. Can now go back to feeling pregnant instead of scared. A wonderful, lovely feeling.

Thank you all so much for your concern and support, it really means a lot xxx

piglit · 15/03/2004 17:08

Wonderful, brilliant news. I am so pleased for you! (((((hugs)))))

eyelash · 15/03/2004 18:12

Brilliant news beansprout. It is a relief and even better you now have the first photo for your album.
