Anyone had Fetal MRI at Kings--help me prepare...

Had a scan today (am 27 wks). Baby has severe ventriculomegaly, excess fluid on both sides of the brain. I've been told this could mean anything from absolutely nothing, to potentially severe brain problem or tumour. So am having MRI so they can get a good look inside the brain and see that everything is OK. At least I know it's not chromosone related, as I had clear amnio already.
I'm going to get a call in next 2 days or so to go to Kings for scanhas anyone been and what is it like? Is it as noisy as a normal MRI? I'll be going by myself as DH can't get time off and I won't be getting any results that daywill be going back to my own consultant for them.

oh no, I'm so sorry Sad

is this enlarged ventricles? They thought ds had this whilst I was pregnant.

Nbg · 03/05/2006 20:36

Sad Arabica.

How are you feeling about it all?

{{{hugs}}}

Arabica · 03/05/2006 20:36

I think so HMO2, they're enlarged because there's too much fluid? What happened in your case?

arabica, I hope this doesn't frighten you know if you know about my situation atm, but I had a fetal MRI scan in March because my baby had ventriculomegaly as well. How big do they reckon the ventricles are with your baby?

The MRI was okay, it was noisy but not too bad. The worst thing for me was that I couldn't lie on my back because that made me feel faint, but lying on my side made it a very tight squeeze to get into the tube thingy.

Anything else you would like to know, please ask!

emkana · 03/05/2006 20:41

Oh just remembered the MRI came back saying that the brain, including the ventricles was fine.

So sometimes things on the ultrasound look worse than they are.

Arabica · 03/05/2006 20:53

Thanks for replying emkana. It's 'severe', ie, greater than 15mm. Have had MRI for a back problem in the past, it was bloody noisy (someone had nicked the MRI unit CD player so no music through your headphones) and went on for ages but I think this is faster.

Arabica, ds's were thought to be borderline hydrocephalus (sp?) at my 20 week scan. I think there were around 11mm iirc. I was scanned right through my pregnancy and got the final all clear at around 34 weeks as there had been no accelerated rate of growth. He is fine, just was born with a big head - 38.5cms! Shock

I know your situation is much more worrying, I'm so sorry. Let's hope you get some good news at your appointment x

emkana · 03/05/2006 22:34

Best wishes from me too.

I think how long it takes depends largely on the baby's "co-operation" - whether he/she will keep still for long enough to take a decent picture!

Arabica · 04/05/2006 00:05

Yes, I was wondering how they manage to do that--you can't exactly control how still the baby is. How are you doing at the moment?

soapbox · 04/05/2006 00:09

Arabica - no help at all, but just want you to know I am wishing you and your baby well:)

Arabica · 04/05/2006 01:01

That's really kind of you. I can feel it kicking away and I have a gut instinct that it is OK. However, that doesn't mean I'm not panicking, too.

Arabica - I'm good and bad, also have a feeling that my baby will okay after all, but then thinking I'm deluding myself
(which I don't mean to say that you're deluding yourself - there is far, far more evidence in my case that something is wrong.

Have you come across mrsdarcy on MN yet? Her baby had severe ventriculomegaly and she is now 9 months or something and absolutely fine.)

Good luck again!

BigHotMama · 04/05/2006 09:16

Arabica, am so sorry to hear whats happened and pray your baby will be ok, sending lots of positive vibes and hugs your way x x x

pucca · 04/05/2006 09:21

Arabica...I am sorry to hear what you are going through and will be thinking of you, hope everything goes ok.

xXx

Arabica · 04/05/2006 09:46

I didn't know about mrsdarcy's baby, I will do a search and find out more--that's very encouraging.
The waiting is just so awful, isn't it--am waiting for a call from Kings for the appt, then I don't know how I'm going to cope with waiting until Weds for the results, then if it isn't a conclusive result I'll be waiting until it's born for answers.
I wish it was 5 months ago and I just had sickness to complain about.

I've just read some of mrsdarcy's posts, it's all a bit hard to take in, I just feel overwhelmed and frightened at the moment.

emkana · 04/05/2006 12:45

Arabica, I'm sorry you feel frightenend and overwhelmed - I know what you are going through as I've been there and it's so, so hard.

I'm sorry that reading mrsdarcy's post seems to have made things worse, that wasn't my intention!

Have everything crossed for you that all will be fine. XXX

Twinkie1 · 04/05/2006 12:48

Went in with my sister when she had to have one - wasn't what they have mentioned to you though was something quite different.

I have had 2 CVS's at Kings though and I have to say they were wonderful, caring and completely professional in all of their deals with me.

Hope things go ok for you.
