Anyone had Fetal MRI at Kings--help me prepare...

Had a scan today (am 27 wks). Baby has severe ventriculomegaly, excess fluid on both sides of the brain. I've been told this could mean anything from absolutely nothing, to potentially severe brain problem or tumour. So am having MRI so they can get a good look inside the brain and see that everything is OK. At least I know it's not chromosone related, as I had clear amnio already.
I'm going to get a call in next 2 days or so to go to Kings for scanhas anyone been and what is it like? Is it as noisy as a normal MRI? I'll be going by myself as DH can't get time off and I won't be getting any results that daywill be going back to my own consultant for them.

I don't know what to think, Emkana, part of me doesn't want to hear the results in case it's bad news, the rest of me would like to know one way or the other. The only person I feel comfortable asking to press them on my behalf is the lovely midwife who works in the fetal medicine unit at Homerton. She's off until Monday though.

Do you feel up to ringing them again yourself tomorrow?

Arabica · 01/06/2006 00:02

Yes, I'll be ringing.

hi arabica - hope yu get some ansswers today. fingers crossed for you.olivo x

Arabica · 01/06/2006 09:38

have phoned and complained to a midwife, who said that the consultant had been ringing the radiologist to chase up his report. That's what is causing the delay apparently. She has promised to call me today even if it's to say that they can't tell me anything. That's what I was told yesterday, of course, but at least this time I've got higher up the chain of power and responsibility than a receptionist.

Hm. I hope the Radiologist in question is not the Dr Alan Statham variety Arabica. Really hope you get your call-back today. XXX

Arabica · 01/06/2006 10:45

Dr Statham has spoken! I will get a proper report on Monday but the midwife chased down an oral result, and that reveals no extra problems like tumours or bleeds or malformation--'just' the fluid.
Result! Am vvvvvv Grin Grin
The baby obviously still has the fluid problem but at least we now know it isn't being caused by anything catastrophic.
Thanks for all the support I have had on this thread. I will keep you posted about what happens on Monday at my follow-up appt. I might need another MRI in which case I won't be so scared because I'll already know there isn't anything too bad in there.

Arabica · 01/06/2006 14:55

Will let you all know what happens next--only have to wait until Monday for my next appt, I expect they will be measuring the fluid again to see if it's still increasing.

What brilliant news Arabica. I was told with dd4 that there was too much fluid, and when my waters went the midwife described it as a "deluge"Wink and dd4 is absolutely brilliant (when she stops chucking sand across the terrace!)

Wishing you all the best.

Arabica · 01/06/2006 15:04

This is brain fluid not amniotic fluid though so I doubt it's going to dissipate in the same way!

ggglimpopo · 01/06/2006 15:07

Sorry Arabica - I am a little flustered at the moment and didn't read right.

But it is very good news that they found no other sign of anything awry.
