Anyone had Fetal MRI at Kings--help me prepare...

Had a scan today (am 27 wks). Baby has severe ventriculomegaly, excess fluid on both sides of the brain. I've been told this could mean anything from absolutely nothing, to potentially severe brain problem or tumour. So am having MRI so they can get a good look inside the brain and see that everything is OK. At least I know it's not chromosone related, as I had clear amnio already.
I'm going to get a call in next 2 days or so to go to Kings for scanhas anyone been and what is it like? Is it as noisy as a normal MRI? I'll be going by myself as DH can't get time off and I won't be getting any results that daywill be going back to my own consultant for them.

Thanks for all the support!

Didn't get home until 7pm. I had a very detailed (70 minutes!) scan today at the Birthright Centre (after a 3hr wait). Basically they can't see anything wrong except for the excess fluid--and the bit of brain, corpus colloscum, that is sometimes missing in these cases is definitely present.

So they want me to come back for an MRI to check that there is nothing structurally wrong with the brain itself, eg as a result of a bleed or some other blockage. Have been warned that there is a 40-50% risk of developmental delay because the amount of fluid is in the severe category. Was asked if I would consider termination. I was quite shocked to be asked this as so far there is absolutely no proof that anything is wrong with the baby. So I said no. I would have said no to further scanning but they said it was a good idea in case there is something they need to be prepared for immediately after the birth, eg if the baby has hydrocephalus they would need to perform an op immediately after birth to drain the fluid off.

So, am feeling a bit more positive--at least the baby looks normal so far and they seemed fairly positive that they were expecting the MRI to be normal. I will probably need 2 MRI scans, one now and one at 32 wks to check cerebral cortex has properly developed.

Oh, Arabica.

So there is a 50 per cent or higher chance that there is no delay, right?

hoxtonchick · 11/05/2006 20:23

glad things seem to be looking positive arabica. give me a call if you feel like meeting up. lots of love.

emkana · 11/05/2006 20:25

When they thought that my baby "only" had ventriculomegaly the consultant was telling me about his consultant colleague who had a shunt operation at a very young age but was living a completely normal and very successful life.

Also, the amount of fluid might go down as the pregnancy goes on.

So fingers crossed that everything will turn out fine for you and your family. XX

maltesers · 11/05/2006 20:30

Glad to hear some news Arabic. Fingers crossed for your next scan etc. Will keep track of your thread.

mrsdarcy · 11/05/2006 21:16

So glad it went well and that you're feeling positive, Arabica. I was advised to have a late scan for the same reason, although it was actually very difficult for the consultant to see the ventricles when the baby was getting towards term.

Arabica · 11/05/2006 21:32

Yes, that's how I see it motherinf. Better than 50% chance that all is well. My worry is more that something nasty gets revealed on the MRI scan. I don't know when I get the MRI scan, have to wait for a call.
Also had some blood tests done (TORCH screen) to see if an infection could be responsible.
I do feel better than I did before (althojgh I have stomach ache from being prodded about for so long)

Thank you so much for updating us all after such a gruelling day Arabica. Very glad indeed you have so much positive info to come away with, and wishing you the very best of luck with the TORCH results and the next round of scans XXX

Blu · 12/05/2006 12:16

Very glad to hear that the part which could have been missing is present. They are v good at the Harris birthright Trust unit, aren't they?
Hold tight until the MRI - but my instinct is that they wouldn't have been anything other than depressingly non-committal about what they expect from that unless they were extremely confident.

Let us know, anyway. (of course you will!)

Nbg · 12/05/2006 12:50

Glad to hear the news Arabica. It's sounds very positive and you also sound alot brighter now.

Great news Smile

jayjaybaby · 12/05/2006 19:20

love i hope you are ok after a gruelling few days

oops · 12/05/2006 20:24

Oh i am glad it is over for you.
I am sorry they couldn't unconditionally say everything is fine- but it sounds fairly hopeful.
sending you some strength and positive thoughts.
Maybe we should sort out a clissold park coffee soon.
Smile
