Hello.

Are we all moving over to this thread now then? I'm not third trimester yet, but I'll get there soon :)

Bought the cot the other day, going to order the pram and carseat in two weeks. Getting very excited now!!

Baba is getting very active now. She is more interactive too I think, like if DH or I talk to her or tap my tummy.

Dozey haven't even thought about my hospital bag yet. Do they keep first timers in overnight? Birth Plan-wise, I want it to be as natural as possible, so just gas and air. I'm hoping to be in the bath/birthing pool for most of it until it come to pushing. I'm being realistic though, and if something is going wrong and intervention is needed then I'm going to do what's best for the baby.

We also have our name now, I just hope she suits it when she pops out! xx

karatekimmi · 19/02/2012 17:44

Hi, haven't done a birth plan but have my hospital bag sorted already (godson tried to arrive at 25 weeks, managed to wait until 28, and due to this I am prepared) I have a pack of nappies, wipes, nighties, food and drink, baby clothes, maternity pads, iPod and speakers,

I am sure this isn't the best bag, but it will be modified over the coming weeks when birth is more likely!!

We have our names picked out, but DH is now waivering on the boys name but without offering any other suggestions! It took FOREVER to find a boys name!!!

Went shopping with my mum, sis and a friend so have lots of things for the baby now. Mum is a lot happier now, I think she thought I was just going to put baby in a drawer naked!!!

SirCharles · 19/02/2012 18:02

Thanks dozey for starting a new thread! I cannot believe the 3rd Trimester is here. Visited an Elephant Sanctuary today - thank goodness we are not elephants - 22 month gestation and then breast fed for between 2 - 4 years!!!!

i have started a list for my hospital bag...... based on these sites:
Babtcentre
cow&gate list
mumsnet suggestions

Re birth plan.... hmmmm still in denial! might put off actually writing until I get back to the UK at 33 weeks. Baby should be born at St Thomas' Hospital in London and I hope I am eligible for the MWLC.... cannot be confirmed until I see my consultant again though. no sign of PE yet though so fingers (& toes) crossed!
Am hoping to do a hypnobirthing course and to hire a doula once I get back so fingers crossed that the birth will be fairly natural and relaxed, involving a bath &/or a ball whilst at home and (if it is free) the pool at the St T MWLC. However I am definitely up for some drugs if the occasion requires it..... but am a little worried how I might react to them (i hate feeling out of control or feeling queasy & many of them sound like they do this.... & I really hate vomiting....). I will try to attend a session with one of the St T anaesthetists when I get back where they talk about the options though as am sure that will help me come to terms with this!
Not sure about Epidurals because I dont like the idea of tearing, which I hear is more likely......

it is all so complicated and everyone I know who works in the medical profession tells me a birth plan is a waste of time and goes out of the window as soon as a woman is in labour. Frankly I find that view quite depressing.

To those experienced mums on here..... what do you think about a birth plan - waste of time or useful?

Other random birth related thoughts which keep me awake at night:

  • After the birth (so long as all gone well) I hope for immediate skin to skin with B and then for DH to get skin to skin with B.
  • Does anyone know why I might ask to leave the cord attached for any period of time? I keep seeing references on MN to leaving it attached until it stops "throbbing" but have not seen why...... & am too squeamish/in denial to look into in right away!!!!
  • Stem cell saving (ie umbilical cord & placenta) seems to be popular out here - do they do that in the UK too? I would be interested if it was but did not see any adverts in St T for it before I left....
  • Have also just realised the MW gave me a leaflet on Strep B at my Booking In...... she did not say anything though..... should i be booking in for a private test at 35/36 weeks? Has anyone been told anything by their MW?

Talking about birth - I had a vivid dream last night..... the doula had arrived as labour had started, I went for a bath, DH was dashing home (on an overnight flight from Africa to London) but B started to arrive in the Bath...... so I delivered B (still no idea on gender - dream not that detailed!) in the bath and then the BA Exec Club call centre managed to connect me to DH (via handset on back of seat) to tell him the good news..... yes very strange. Plus an ambulance crew came to get us to take us to hospital and we had photos with the ambulance crew at home. I must be going completely mad!!!!

BTW - Thanks for the reassurance that the coccyx pain is probably pregnancy related - if it gets any worse I shall be looking for one of those cushions OR insisting DH carries a chaise longue for me everywhere we go :) Coccyx pain AND piles - miserable.

oops sorry for the long post. Hope everyone had a good weekend.

Enfyshedd · 19/02/2012 18:26

27 weeks today. Just got back yesterday from a week's holiday visiting my GPs & DPs family which has meant a total of about 500 miles travelling by train around the UK - I'm bloody knackered! Thankfully, DP has insisted on doing all "Housewifey" duties today so I can rest before going back to work tomorrow and the DSSs are at their mother's for a delayed weekend with her.

Names choices for boy or girl have been picked but other than a bit of clothes shopping which I started a few weeks ago, no more. Plan is to spend a bit of time next weekend writing a list of things to get/prepare/etc (such as get new car so can get to hospital...) and probably a plan of when to get stuff done by.

Wriggles (as bump has been christened) is very fond of bouncing around after I've eaten and in the middle of the night (as I've noticed when I keep waking up with a sore shoulder) and basically is becoming very noticable. I was weirdly pleased in work the other week when one of the women on my team (who has 4DCs) asked me how I was doing and confided that she'd hated being pregnant. It gave me the confidence to admit that I feel like a science experiment which seems to be colouring my whole approach to pregnancy, although I do tend to analyse things anyway.

Seem crazy that in 3-3 1/2 months that I'll be responsible (I mean really responsible, not like I am for DP's boys at the moment) of a little human being. Still can't believe this is actually happening to me.

Dozeyland · 19/02/2012 21:46

Sircharles I enjoy pregnancy but stuff 22months!! lol

I had a birth plan with DD, pretty much stating that I wanted a natural birth, keeping active, DP to cut the cord, immediate skin-to-skin, breastfeeding etc etc. in some cases it does go out of the window, but mine was kept to quite well tbh other than my unfortunate PPH after having her.

Stitches - I tore with DD but i honestly didnt know, and luckily suffered no terrible pain after, I was just aware for a few weeks iyswim.

Skin-to-skin - state this, as sometimes they just get on with the initial checks etc, I had immediate S2S, and then when I was being stitched, DP had S2S whilst DD was having checks (temp etc) I found this lovely to watch :)

Cord - I think DD's wasnt cut straight away, She was laid on me for a bit, then I think when it stopped or decreased throbbing DP cut it.

Not sure on the cord/placenta banking :s, My placenta was "ragged" so it wouldnt have been much use i dont think. (literally torn as I was pushing so hard, waters were bulging for ages and DD was big for me and fast!)

My birth plan is the same this time around, I've put in for the water pool again (I did last time but a woman was in there labouring for hours, and i went in and had DD in another room and she was still in the pool :o)
So if I have enough time, I would like to try it. I've also added to this plan that if my waters dont break within good time then i want them popped, as DDs were "bulging" until her head was coming out, which apparently made the pain more intense. I did it naturally still. and... um? Oh and I've been advised this time for "active management" in the 3rd stage(the jab they give you in your leg to help the uterus contract for the placenta to come out) I did it naually with DD in 21mins, but where i lost like 1000mls of blood they just think it would be best if i have the jab. and just things like no immediate visitors, giving me time to shower etc before they come. all handy i found.

Hippie I think it just depends on the invididual, i know some first-timers who had their baby at like 9am and was home by 4pm :s - to me this seems too soon and she felt rough and not cared for. where as I stayed in 2 nights (observation the first night due to PPH, but the chose to sta a 2nd just to make sure I was 100%, and my blood count was good enough.

This time I dont want to be away from DD too long, but DP has said he'd rather me stay an extra night just to make sure im ok health wise, and also give you a bit of time to "come back down to earth" i think?

Went to see DP yesterday, miss him SO much :( we just want to know if he's going to be allowed home or not :( going to be a long wait until we know :( LIMBO

Sorry for the absolute essay!

Morning all, I haven't got a hospital bag yet either but have started thinking about it & looked on a couple of websites for ideas (must have cropped up in an nct newsletter!) Will start looking for things to go in it over the next couple of weeks.

Birth plan wise am still hoping for home birth, but will talk through what ifs with DH so if there's a change then he can relay my thoughts. He's not really seemed interested in my pg so far, has felt the baby kick a couple of times but not as into it as some other DPs seem. He is looking forward to being a dad, but just doesn't want to know about the mechanics! Hope it's not too much of a shock for him when he realises we actually hVe a child to look after for the next 30 plus years! :)

AlexTasha · 20/02/2012 11:02

Hi all,

I am getting my hospital bad sorted after pay day, off the top of my head the stuff that was recommended:

2 nighties (cheap from matalan so you can throw out with buttons at the front for breastfeeding) one for labour and one for afterwards
leggings
night gown
slippers
yoga pants and a vest for going home in (casual crappy clothes)
lip balm (apparently gas and air chaps lips)
camera
nursing bras
big 'old-lady' undies that I dont mind binning
straw (apparently hospital cups are a bit manky)
tena lady pants (the actual incontinence undies are best apparently)
breast pads
nipple cream (lansinoh)
Ready-made formula incase i can't breastfeed
nappies (free pack of 27 that comes in the bounty pack)
wipes
cotton wool
sleep suits and body suits (about 6 of each)
scratch mittens
hat
socks
sudocreme
Phone / charger
breastfeeding pillow
pain killers

Erm, I think thats about it, I'm sure I would have forgotten something though!

Birth plan, I am hoping for a natural birth, hopefully a water birth. But if I am in agony I will happilly have an epidural, but I dont want any pethadine or anything to make me feel woozy. I really want to be alert through the whole thing. Providing there are no complications I am giving birth at a midwife led birthing centre which I am pretty excited about. They encourage active / natural births, but also have a labour ward attached incase of complications.

On the weekend we sold our BMW M3 convertible and bought a sensible Vauxhall Astra! I was so happy. I love feeling like we are getting things ready for our baby.

Sounds like everyone is starting to get organised and feeling their babies more. It is SO exciting!! :)

absam32 · 20/02/2012 11:18

Hi Ladies - is it okay if I join in this thread? I had a quick look at the other one last week and there were so many posts I was a bit overwhelmed! I'm 35, based S London, due 1 May with my first. Now I'm 30 weeks it all seems very close and scary, and as I was born prematurely at 34 weeks, am beginning to think its about time we finally got ourselves organised. Have noticed a marked difference in my size and in the movements this week - DH felt baby for first time through my bump too which was fab - esp as has spurred him on to strip the spare room this week in prep for the nursery. Also got bag down from the loft for me to start getting my hospital bag together - sum contents so far = nipple cream, pads, Simple shower gel, straw and a towel! Def needs a bit of thought! - and my birthing plan thoughts are...stay flexible! I don't know anyone who's had things work out exactly the way they planned, so am reluctant to be too prescriptive about it.

Anyway - nice to meet you all!

SirCharles · 20/02/2012 14:12

Welcome absam! I was born at 35 weeks so I know what you mean about worrying how close it all seems now! However I am not back in the UK until I am 33 weeks so we wont have a thing until after then. I just hope B stays put for the requisite amount of time so we can get sorted! I had a sibling born at 32 weeks and one of the ladies on the other May thread has had hers already! (PE/HELLP so baby whipped out at 26+6).

Lovely to meet you and good luck. This group is lovely and not too big so it is easier to interact with everyone.

ShipShapeBristolFashion · 20/02/2012 16:40

Hello ladies. Room for one more? This will be my third and I'm due 29 May. Trying to get into the right headspace so thought I'd join your thread. With two other toddlers to look after I don't seem to have much time to think about this new little life (millionth guilt pang of the day).

Here's to a happy and healthy 3rd trimester!

heartmoonshadow · 20/02/2012 16:56

Hi, I another new joiner for May - due on the 3rd! I have just this week begun to think about my bag - noticed the tip about straws above may just nick that idea thanks.

I have had a lovely weekend washing the millions of baby clothes my cousin has given me - my DD won't need another thing in the next 12 months (but I will buy her stuff anyway heh heh). Although I was brought to tears by one of the knitted cardies that she gave me - I recognised it as the one my mum knitted for her eldest daughter, my mum passed away a few years ago.

We have also been given a swinging crib and all the bedding which DH put straight in the loft to stop me mooning over it. (Also to stop DS thinking it is for him, DH will get down when I come home from hospital.)

I can't wait to meet my little one now it all seems more real now. Not looking forward to birth last one was simple ish with no pains. Pre-eclampsia followed by a drip/epidural after induction and ARM did not work so I have no idea what is to come.

hippieshake · 20/02/2012 18:45

Moan alert! Just got in from a 9 hour shift at work (I stand up all day on a hard wooden floor.) Everything is hurting. My hips, my back, my knees, my ankles....

I'm sat on the sofa refusing to move for the rest of the evening.

alwaysanauntie · 20/02/2012 19:04

Hello absam, shipshape and heart (sorry I'm being lazy not typing names in full :o ) welcome aboard for the final furlong! Hope you're all doing well.

Just thought I'd add to the earlier coccyx conversation - mine's also been sore, generally after I've been sitting at my desk for a while, so can sympathise with that - I'd also assumed it was ligament stretching related so not worried about it. I'm also getting sore shoulders/hips/knees at night from sleeping on my side, so have just bought a dreamgenii pillow on ebay to give that a try and hopefully get a few more nights of decent sleep - will let you know if it was worth the £25!

I'm also watching a few other bits - baby bjorn bouncer, play gym and play pen, and although I did tell DH yesterday we have everything we need I just cant help myself Blush. Also ordered a baby name book on Amazon, as although we have a shortlist for our little girl, it is a very short list and we want to see if there's anything better out there! I know I could use the internet, but the book has 7000 names and all the meanings etc so should be quicker to flick through possibilities.

Will be 28 weeks tomorrow, and next midwife appointment on Wednesday morning (not expecting anything other than the usual BP check, wee and doppler) but am going to try to remember to ask about what I need to have ready for home birth and from what date they will allow me to have the baby at home - apparently some areas it's 37 weeks and others it's 38 so will be good to know a bit more about the process as I'm still a bit Hmm about it all!

alwaysanauntie · 20/02/2012 19:06

Just x-posted with you hippie sounds rough - I recommend a nice long hot bath with bubbles and a Brew or Wine depending on how rubbish you feel!

hippieshake · 20/02/2012 19:45

I'm feeling much less sorry for myself now haha. In the grand scheme of things it's only achy joints :) What better excuse for some chocolate in a bit.

Welcome to all you new ladies!!

xx

CrackersandCheese · 20/02/2012 19:48

Hello all and welcome to the newbies we've collected.

Loving the thread title.

You've all made me realise I should get on an organise my hospital bag. I too have been in a bit of a state of denial I think. It's going to be my job for the week.

The main things we still need to get are the cloth nappies, pushchair and car seat. Also, I was with a friend the other week who had one of those play gyms that looked quite cool and the baby seemed to like it. So, I might look at those.

Have you all decided on names? We've got a tonne of girls names but literally no boys names. And my instinct is that it's a boy, so I really need to get a wriggle on there.

On that point... shall we have a little guess the sex list for those of us who don't know to see if our instincts are right (for those with an instinct of course)?

x

Cewafwb · 21/02/2012 07:57

Please can someone tell me what the other may chat is called as I want to read about the lady who already had her baby and I can't find it! x

VeronicaSpeedwell · 21/02/2012 08:43

Hi all! Just checking in to our shiny new thread, I can't believe how far we've all come. 26 weeks for me now, and my bump is suddenly attracting double takes from people who hadn't noticed yet. All this talk of hospital bags is making me feel I should get myself sorted out!

CrackersandCheese · 21/02/2012 09:17

Cewafwb this may be the other thread, but I haven't read it so can't be sure www.mumsnet.com/Talk/antenatal_clubs/1334067-Due-in-May-the-2nd-trimester-more-glowing-and-less-throwing

I just wanted to let you all know that Boots have a 3 for 2 on quite a lot of baby stuff at the moment, including things like baby monitors. I need to have a proper look later. I've also joined the parenting club with them as you get more points on baby stuff that way. And you get cash back with Quidco (if you use that). Listen to me, I sound like a right scrimper!

x

SirCharles · 21/02/2012 12:05

Cewafwb and crackers this is the thread : (should be the same link as the one above)
Due-in-May-the-2nd-trimester-more-glowing-and-less-throwing

thanks for the tips re Boots.

A question for those ladies with experience: Do I need a baby monitor? If yes, will I need it from Day 1? Just trying to work out what I can acquire later, or wait to get from DH's family as they finish using items!

In other news - I have just booked onto an NCT antenatal course at the end of April (scarily close to my EDD but that is how it is in London!) and postnatal course later in the summer. I also have my short list of doulas to call. Am feeling very organised.... just need to call St Thomas's now to see if I can get onto a maternity ward tour when I get back and my to do list will be buzzing with excitement at the number of ticks I can add to it. Time for Brew to congratulate myself!

Russki · 21/02/2012 13:19

crackers, my instinct is that mine is a girl, based on the nausea I experienced during the first trimester. i have a 50/50 chance of being right, at least!
Otherwise, my stomach has exploded from a smallish bump three weeks ago that barely elicited comment, to a huge balloon that nearly got me refused boarding to my flight the other day.. and how it wriggles. and my breasts have only just started to swell, too!
Going in for a scan later this week - we live abroad, so get a scan every time. but in other ways they seem a little blase about it all - i only had my bp checked for the first time 4 weeks ago, and then only because i requested it, and thankfully it was fine (then, at least). And I'll have my first urine check (for glucose) at my check-up this week. Ah well, i guess/hope they'd see pretty soon if there was something serious up..

absam32 · 21/02/2012 14:39

Thanks for the welcome everyone...just offloading....I have just arrived at work after a whopper 4 hr wait at the ante natal clinic this morning!! Was diagnosed with gestational diabetes after my 28 week GTT and have had to monitor self with an evil finger pricking device all this week before going back in to a special diabetes clinic this morning for a follow up. It took literally 2 mins for them to tell me all is fine apparently....4 hours wait for that!

Re the coccyx pain - I have also been getting that really badly for about 4 weeks now and can really really recommend sitting (or rather rolling your hips in a circular motion) on a gym ball. I got a cheap one for about 7 quid from TK Maxx and its literally the only thing that helps - in fact its bliss!

alwaysanauntie · 21/02/2012 15:49

absam that's rubbish! I thought it was bad enough waiting 2 hours for my 20 week scan in a hot stuffy room, but surely 4 hrs is a record. When you say you were told all is fine, does that mean you don't have GD or just that you're managing it well? Am going to look for a gym ball soon, as am also finding it a bit of a struggle getting up from the sofa now!

sircharles I spent this afternoon reading the patient info leaflets on my local hospital website (v slow day at work!) And they had one on stem cell banking. Apparently it's not recommend over here and only a couple of hospitals in the country do it. I think I'd rather the blood from the cord all goes to the baby anyway (which is why you'd wait for it to stop throbbing before cutting) as it's been proven to be beneficial whereas stem cell banking is such an unkown. Hope you're having fun, am v jealous of your elephant trip!

Don't forget it's pancake day - am thinking I might try crepes suzette for pudding, found a fairly simple recipe on BBC website. Yummy in my tummy! :o

winnie3 · 21/02/2012 17:36

Hello all. I was on the original list and even though I haven't posted in a while, I've loved reading your posts :)

I'm 26+3 and have to say, you lot have really motivated me to sort out my hospital bag. OK, well not actually sort it out so much as make my lists of what to pack. After reading some tips on mumsnet and similar sites, I've decided to take 2 bags; the first with priority items for labour and immediately after, the second for DH to bring back with him from the car when he goes to share the news with the world. If anyone wants me to put my lists on here, let me know.

I'm going to make a birth plan even though I'm fully aware that things don't always go to plan. I think it might help me feel more in control.

I've got to admit I've still got a lot to do in prep for our little munchkin's arrival and can't believe I'll soon be in my third trimester. Best leave you now and get shopping online Blush.

hippieshake · 21/02/2012 20:06

I haven't even started to think about my hospital bag (25+4) I keep thinking that it's too soon, and I'll do it around 30 weeks.

Had my cot delivered today and it was completely smashed by the courier, so DH refused to accept it and sent it back. Hopefully should be getting a new one sent out tomorrow.

absam poor you, that sounds awful. I had a GTT last week but I was clear. Did karatekimmi get her results yet?

xx
