MrsLister, what superstitions do you mean?

MrsLister · 18/02/2012 12:44

They think I'm talking about it too early. It's probably because of my MMC last year but I could do without the negativity to be honest. The chances of anything going wrong now are drastically reduced and I need to start feeling positive!

The thing is I'm a bit of an oversharer (I write a blog and work in social media) and DH is an undersharer so we tend to clash about this type of stuff

NeedlesCuties · 18/02/2012 13:20

With regards to superstitions:- what a load of pants!

My mum can be a bit like that, but I always ask her to explain why she is superstitious and what she thinks will happen and she can't give me any logic.

At the end of the day buying things in pregnancy will not cause anyone to miscarry, but the items will be painful to see if a tragedy like that happens. But at the end of the day, anyone can die at any time, it doesn't mean we shouldn't buy things at all or invest in relationships.

Sorry to be a bit morbid, but I think superstitions like that are crap.

MrsLister · 18/02/2012 13:23

Thanks Needles. :)

Westcountrylovescheese · 18/02/2012 13:29

You are due on the 30th aren't you? So that makes you about nearly 13 weeks. So you are out of danger zone and you've had a scan. Did you do nuchal tests?

I must admit I was still a bit wary but went proper public at about 14 weeks (although no rooftop shouting because that's not me).

Sounds like they are looking out for you and doing it in a caring way, albeit maybe over the top. Discuss with your DH when you think you will both be comfortable, it's not like you will be able to hide it for much longer!

I have found that these things are more on my mind more than DH and I've told him its because I'm the one that has bloating/constipation/tiredness and general body changes that I can't not think about it. Whereas he can. So, I suppose for your DH and Mil it easier for them to keep quiet when you want to shout!

They'll have to start shouting soon!

Westcountrylovescheese · 18/02/2012 13:29

Good point too needles!

MrsLister · 18/02/2012 13:38

Thanks westcountry - I think you're right. All the big things over the next few months are going to happen to me - I'm carrying the baby. I think I just want them to give me some leeway to talk and chat about it as I want to.

I know neither of them mean any harm but they are both natural pessimists ('realists' as my DH would argue) and I am the complete opposite. The irony is I've got every reason not to be (had a pretty shitty upbringing) and my DH hasn't (lovely caring stable home and large family he is still close to)

I suppose it's just horse for courses.

Yep we had scan yesterday (I am 12+2 today) and should get nuchal/blood results soon. Fingers crossed.

NeedlesCuties · 18/02/2012 13:53

Sorry to be morbid again Westcountry but I think referring to week 12 as being "out of the danger zone" is also a bit like superstition as loss can happen anytime during a pregnancy.

I know what you're saying and after 12 weeks is when people tell others as they've had a scan etc, but really the baby isn't here till the baby is here, IYSWIM.

I'm not getting at you, but just that the idea grates on me .

MrsLister my own in-laws are a little odd and barely mentioned my first pregnancy to me at all until they came to visit me in hospital after DS had been born. I also think they were afraid of jinxing things, whereas to me I just thought they were ignorant pigs.

Westcountrylovescheese · 18/02/2012 14:42

Sorry, didn't mean to offend anyone, just trying to be helpful.

(goes off to sit on naughty step) Wink

Angel786 · 18/02/2012 14:48

Still battling the cold but feeling a bit bettter, thanks poppy

My bump is now ridiculous, really struggling to hide it at work... for another month!. Also have a v weird boss and had a v awkward chat with her on Fri as we clash, a lot! Keep getting out of breath when I talk lots still....!

Hi everyone, hope you're all having a good weekend.
Just been to do some retail therapy and have managed to get 4 tops which aren't black (most of my other maternity wear is black from last time) from H&M and a couple of nice scarves. I am rubbish at accessorising so my DSis came along to help me out Smile
Got my nuchal test results back in the post this morning and am 1 in 2400 so considered low risk.
Raining here now but plenty of housework to do so certainly won't be bored!
What's everyone else up to this weekend?

woopsidaisy · 18/02/2012 15:28

I can eat Presidents brie? Yippee!

Vinolover · 18/02/2012 15:33

All this brie talk is giving me a serious craving! I really fancy it bakes with some crusty bread.. Yummy!! Can we have any brie and camembert if it's thoroughly cooked? I was ecstatic to see we could have stilton if thoroughly cooked through and cannot wait to cook up some stilton sauce. Oh yum.. Suddenly my chinese doesn't seem too exciting anymore!

Im sorry about your mil and dh's negativity mrslister. It certainly puts a dampner on things doesn't it :(

Only 8 days to go before I find out if this LO is a blue or pink bundle :) Everyone (except dh and my mum) think it's a boy so we shall see. I just can't wait to see him again :)

Hope everyone is having a good saturday!

Angel786 · 18/02/2012 15:46

Hi vino I think if it's cooked (well) it's ok. I love baked camebert Grin

Angel786 · 18/02/2012 15:52

Bleurgh just seen this sooooo unfair saying even pasteurised Brie should be avoided... But I've bought it now and realllllly want it.

Envy Sad

I did have Brie v occasionally (once) when pg with dd....

OP posts:
Angel786 · 18/02/2012 15:59

I'm doing it. Taking the rind off and a nice Brie baguette for me. I'm sure you'd have to eat loads for it to be a real threat?

MrsMigginslovespies · 18/02/2012 16:28

Angel I think a wee bit will be fine. Apparently, the chance of getting listeriosis is so low, it's almost negligable. There hasn't been a case in the UK for years. I'm feeling a bit guilty now for bringing the whole brie thing up. But it is so yummy.

0FrillyKnickers0 · 18/02/2012 17:03

I just saw my MW and we heard baby's heartbeat!! I am currently on cloud 9 and unwilling to come down :)

Right. I am going to set up a super duper high privacy (no one will know it exists - invite only) FB group. Message me if you want to join. This is by no means a replacement for this thread!

PoppyS34 · 18/02/2012 18:13

angel I just read that link, and right at the bottom is says about folic acid supplements, that they only need taking until 12wks.

Checked it on nhs and it says the same Shock!

I'm 16wks today and am still taking my pregnancy support vitamins, should I stop?

What's everyone else doing/done before?

tashaw28 · 18/02/2012 18:33

Frilly I'd be up for a Facebook group but don't know how to private message on MN so if you do set one up please message me! Also I know exactly how u felt re scan, I've felt the same with all 3dc!! Never quite believe it till I see it!
Is it controversial if I say I'm not that into cheese at the moment but obsessed by chocolate! Normally I like it but now I love it and need it twice it more times a day!
SmileSmile

NeedlesCuties · 18/02/2012 19:40

Poppy it's true that the advice is to take folic acid up to 12 weeks as that is the period the spine is growing.

With DS's pregnancy I took folic acid up to that point then stopped, plus I hadn't needed to take pregnancy vits with his pregnancy as I was eating healthy food.

With this pregnancy I've been taking Pregnacare which includes folic acid. My diet has been rubbish because of the hyperemesis and I haven't been able to face much food, never mind a healthy balance! I have about a weeks supply left of them which I will take (am currently 14 weeks) but after that I think I'll not buy any more.

I did however take vits when I was breastfeeding DS, especially in the early months of it and will likely do the same with this baby when he or she comes along.

Hope that made some sense and was help....

Angel786 · 18/02/2012 19:41

Hi poppy I stopped taking folic acid at 12 weeks and not taking anyth else, last time I was prescribed calcium and vit d tablets and iron so think I'll leave it as nothing and if my bloods show I need stuff will wait for the gp / midwife to flag it. I do have friends who've taken pg supplements throughout, they'll not do any harm just depends if you can be bothered ( I hate pills etc).

OP posts:
PoppyS34 · 18/02/2012 20:15

Sorry for my rather blunt last post, was checking MN on my phone and was worried I'd done some harm Blush

MrsM - Happy Birthday!
MrsL - ignore everyone else and do what makes you happy, it doesn't matter what anyone else says (although I appreciate those attitudes probably don't make you feel the best :()

I really want brie now, my MW did say that the pasteurised stuff was fine. A nice spinach & brie baguette - yum yum yum. REALLY want goats cheese though, I love that stuff! oh well...

Angel/Needles thanks for replies, really don't know what to do now. I think I'll ask MW at next appt, and finish the box I've got, and see if I might need to take some calcium supplements. My diet is quite healthy, but not as good as it should be.

Hope you're all having a good weekend, despite the miserable weather.

(16wks today :))

0FrillyKnickers0 · 18/02/2012 20:30

Facebook group has been created (cue angelic singing)!

Angel786 · 18/02/2012 20:52

No worries poppy if in doubt err on the side of caution as it'll give you peace of mind.

frilly how fo we find the fb group?
