Quacks - That just seems awfully large considering there is still 20wks to go and they are 20-22inches at birth! Plus they don't even weigh a pound yet. You're right about the contradictory info, but going by the foetus I saw at 20wks you could hold it in the palm of your hand.

Quackers · 12/03/2004 12:08

Agree M2T, I hardly used my changing table, frightened of her falling off!

Have you looked on EBAY jems for stuff, very often they are brand new, but a cut rate price. It's very reliable.

M2T · 12/03/2004 12:31

Quacks - you got me all worried about the size of the baby coz my bump isn't that big. According to a medical website and NCT the baby is 16cm crown to rump.... or 10" in total length....

Don't know why they give the crown-rump measurement in centimetres and the total length in inches, just adds to the confusion. But there you have it.

I couldn't find that bit on the BBC parenting website. Is it a good section? I'd be interested to read a more up to date account of the development of my baby other than the 10yr old books I've got at home.

madgirl · 12/03/2004 12:33

jems- what about ikea- seriously cheaper and the visdalen change table is great. mind you it is for changing nappies facing the baby and not sideways if you get my drift. could never get the hang of sideways changing! also look in the yellow pages and see if you have any second hand baby stuff shops near you. this time round i will be buying a few bits i borrowed off other people but not buying it new
oh my god only 17 weeks to go and that's if it is not early. finish work on 13th April adn have ordered b/band!

Quackers · 12/03/2004 14:05

M2T, it's in the pgcy calendar bit.
My baby's head was measuring 4.56 cm last Friday. So I would hope that the body and legs didn't total the remainder if it was only 10 inches in total That would be a weird baby!! Don;t forget the legs are curled up over it's tummy too, so 10 inches isn't that big really, so don't be worrying about your bump! It's got 20 weeks to lay down fat and develop lungs etc.. The babycentre and babyworld sites are good for images of the baby too!!

SpringChicken · 12/03/2004 15:29

Thanks for your idea's - i know we will manage one way or another - think thngs were just getting on top of me a bit earlier. Plus got sooo much do finish at work before holiday on Thursday it is a nigthmare.

Always time for mumsnet though

We had found a good deal on furniture £399 for cotbed, wardrobe, drawers and changer - this was in our price bracket before DP's car decided to go up the swanee Nevemind, will jsut have to reevaluate things closer to the time.

I'm getting everso confused over these measurements - Pampers website says "Your baby looks like a tiny, thin newborn. She now weighs about 370 grams (about 13 ounces), that's about one pound, and measures about 25 cm (about 10 inches), about the length of a Barbie doll."
Doesn't mention whether this is Crown to Feet or Crown to Rump though ?!?!

Quackers · 12/03/2004 15:57

Glad you're ok Jems, as long as your baby is loved and I'm sure it will be! We can't have evrything, our parents didn't!!! They managed it!

Don't be worrying about the length. As I said my baby's head was 4.5 or so cm, she did give the CRL but I forgot!! was something like 9 inches if I remember and i was coming out at 19 weeks 3 days at the time. If you look in P and B magazine they actually have the ruler at the bottom of the page for various dates throughout pgcy, so you can see! It does say don;t worry if you think this is small as it's crown to rump length. They show it at term too, 24 inches, it's a handy little tool. Should have got the subscription to P and B but it was too late really before i even dared to buy a magazine!

bossykate · 12/03/2004 19:59

hello everyone

had scan today. all normal, measures to dates, no structural anomalies noted, measurements all ok. hooray! and it is a little girl! that makes me 100% wrong on sex guesses so far and dh 100% right.

feeling lots of movement now which is nice and reassuring.

we are much closer in agreement on girls' names than boys' - isabella and beatrice are our current favourites.

hope everyone else is doing well.

tomkitty · 13/03/2004 18:09

I need info/reassurance about the 20 week scan results. Had the scan yesterday. I am a little worried about the femur length measurement. It was 31mm, which is short. Looks like about the top of lower quartile/bottom of second quartile. Some of the other measurements were a little small, but that one smallest by far. Does anybody know what that means? I know that short femur length can be an indicator for chromosomal abnormality but is this too short? It could just be normal - short legs run do run in DH's family unfortunately.

bk - Sex is going to be a mystery by choice, but if it's a girl Beatrice Ruth is our 1st choice name. My mother's name. Isabella is lovely too.

Jane - 21 weeks tomorow

Quackers · 14/03/2004 19:33

TK- I'm sorry i can't help with the exact measurements you've given, but I know DD's femur measurement was small and she did come out with small legs, long body. I have never heard of the theory you say about chromosomal abnormailites, maybe someone else can help there. They didn't say anything at the scan about soft markers/nasal bone I take it and these I believe are much more reliable indicators. HTH
BK - Fab news!!!!!! Glad all is well for you and your little girl!!!

bossykate · 14/03/2004 19:50

thanks, quackers

tk, what did the sonographer say to you about the measurements? although on the small side they are in the normal range, and you say the other measurements are smallish too. what exactly are you worried about, is it any particular condition? if so, someone here might be knowledgeable enough to advise you. otherwise, rather than let it eat away at you, i would phone or go back to the hospital and talk it over with the sonographer again. it would probably put your mind at rest.

good luck, i'm sure you'll be fine

Quackers · 14/03/2004 19:56

Absolutley BK, some babies have small legs, some small ears, some large hands etc... Sure all will be fine!

SpringChicken · 15/03/2004 08:49

Morning everyone,

Great news about your scan BK Is this your first?
Can't shed any light on what the sonographer said to you TK, i can't make head nor tail of what any of my measurements mean!

Have just rang my hospital about parentcraft classes and i'm a bit disappointed - all of them are during the day - there are 2 different places i can go to the first one has classes at 10.00 and the other has classes at 1.30 which means DP can't come with me Did anyone else find this? tbh, i'm a bit weary about going on my own, the whole point of it was to try and help DP know what to expect.

M2T · 15/03/2004 09:18

Hiya Quacks - That sounds right.... if your baby's head measures 4.5cm and the total measurement head to foot is 25cm (10".... the proportions sound right to me! So the head is about a fifth of the total body measurement? Wouldn't it be way more odd is if the head was only 5cm and the rest was 40cm!??

It's all so confusing, but I've spoken to my friend who's a MW and she assures me the 10" is head to foot at 20wks. Anyone else been told something different?

Can Mears help us here??

littlerach · 15/03/2004 13:18

SC, that is why we went to NCT classes, more personal too.
Have lots of movements now, esp late evening.
DD is so excited and keeps pretending she has a baby in her tummy, or that she has has one. Today she told me that the baby came out her tummy, not her ear??!!!!!! She had her party on Saturday for the family and was so lovely. Cannot wait to have another one - you can all remind me I said this in a yrs time!!!!!

Quackers · 15/03/2004 14:31

HI Littlerach, we had a friend over with her baby yedterday and DD could not keep her hands off her! Dressing the baby, cuddling,, kissing and playing with her, it was so cute to watch. I'm excited for he having a baby to play with!! I agree about NCT. They do cost money jems, but are so worth it. I'm hoping to train to be an NCT teacher if I can get the government over here to fund me! Will find out soon if I've been successful!

SpringChicken · 15/03/2004 14:34

Are the NCT classes expensive?

Also, when i rang up this morning i expalined i was only 23 weeks and that if i start the class when she said (2nd April) i would only be 25 weeks but she said that's just how it works out!

Surely i would've forgotten everything by the time the blooming baby arrives if i go that early ?!?

Quackers · 15/03/2004 14:53

HI Jems, it varies but they generally charge about £60-£70 for a course of around 8 weeks. They are small groups and very popular! They focus more on enabling you to make your own choices and being well informed and the positive experience you can have. I didn't have them first time around as they were full v quickly, so opted for NHS parentcraft and did a day class and evening class! I started at 26 weeks and most there were between 25 to 32 weeks starting out. You won't forget, especially as it's 8 weeks for NCT! You can ask if they will fund your place on the course, but I think it;s for hardship cases, ir unemployed etc.. Maybe your teacher can help there. Hope yo manage to get sorted though!

littlerach · 15/03/2004 19:36

We paid £110 for the eight wks, and started when I was 29 wks. I missed the last 2 as DD was early. There were 7 other couples and I still meet with them now, as do the dads. My edd was the latest in the group, although I was the 2nd to give birth!!, so the stage of pregnancy does vary.
Have you tried other surgeries for classes? Most mws seem to operate on an area basis, so work in a number of surgeries so it is worth a try.
I booked the NCT classes when I was about 18 wks as they do fill up quickly. Again, you can always try another area; we lived in Bath and had 2 couples from Bristol join our group as theirs was full.
Quackers, I would like to train as bf councillor if I manage to do it this time.
Can also recommend the NCT post natal groups, or coffee mornings when baby is too little for toddler groups, as you get ideas and info from other mums, plus biccies and coffee!!!!

SpringChicken · 16/03/2004 09:22

Thanks for the info girlies Just seems a bit crap that there isn't an evening or weekend option for people who work! There are only 2 classes run in my area and both are during the day, one at 10am and the other at 1.30!

I will see if i can find out about NCT classes but it's just another thing that goes to show how crap my local NHS is - I don't think you should have to pay just to get a suitable level of service

Anyway, had a bit of a worry yesterday - started gettign achey pains in my tummy like period pains - no cramps or anything just aches and i hadn't felt the baby move very much.
All back to normal now though, no aches and baby is moving around lots

littlerach · 16/03/2004 18:45

SC, I have had those pains a couple of times and they are scarey. I actually went to the mw on one occasion for reassurance. The worst thing is you feel so helpless, as there is nothing you can do really. Hope you feel better.xx

littlerach · 18/03/2004 08:19

bumping this thread up!!
Having more bh now, had to sit down at work today. Is anyone else having them? And how often? Another worry!!!!
Baby moving so much now, could see it in the bath last night so clearly.
How are you all?

Quackers · 19/03/2004 09:29

Hiya, I am really having trouble posting on this thread at home, but not any other!!

If it's ok with you lot, I'll start a new July thread as I finish work a week today! and will be posting from home!

Getting lots of movement now too, especially in the bath, when my tummy does somersaults!!
Littlerach, yes I'm having loads of BH's too!!! I went for a walk yesterday and had to stop a couple of times they were quite strong.

Hoep you;re all ok and see you on the new thread!!!

Chicks66 · 25/03/2004 12:23

Hello all

26wks and 4 days - due on 28th June but didn't labour at all with 1st due to pre-eclampsia and emergency C-section so have been told that this will be like a first labour and so not expecting anything to happen until July - planning on going to a wedding on 3rd July but not sure if that is tempting fate too much.

Aiming to have baby at home or birth centre as hospital experience was so awful last time and v.v. determined not to have another C section.

Am feeling lots of kicks and things but have not yet actually seen any movements - maybe due to the excess amount of fat I was carrying prior to getting pregnant - defo a large mum

Have started having twinges from symphis pubis and wondered if anyone else was suffering from this ?

Also not sure if having BH or not - can anyone describe or would I defo know if having one?

littlerach · 25/03/2004 14:01

BH feel like my tummy has gone rock hard, then I need a wee!! Uncomfortable, but not painful.
