As its my first i have been reading up on every subject known to man!

I just can't believe how quickly things appear etc - its hard to believe that after just 10 weeks your baby is all there, all pieced together ready for you to look at.
At 15 weeks it can make out your voice and soon after responds to your voice!

It just all seems so sureal at the minute - can't wait to see out little twiglett (our nickname for baby) on the big screen making his/hers debut appearance

Jemma7 - I did that with DS. I had 4 books that I referred to!! I became very obsessed.
It was fascinating, but made for a loooooooong pregnancy. I had the 'days to go' written out on my calendar at work. I found out early on, like you. My friends couldn't believe how long it seemed to take for me to get a bump! I was 24 wks before I really felt like I had a bump at all.

Jemma7 · 11/11/2003 11:35

I've realised now just how long it is going to take for the end to come round - althoguh i don't want top wish my pregnancy away i would rather it didn't drag!

Think i might lock the books up for a while and wait til 15 weeks or so - as i am only 6 weeks at the mo its a long way away yet!

i can join the thread, i can join the thread!!
i had my pregnancy confirmed this am at the early preg unit. i had heavy bleed around days 24 and 25, then light spotting for a week, thought i had miscarried, but then felt v pregnant so did a test, and positive! am 5 wks 4 days, have to go back in 2 weeks for them to find a heartbeat. very pleased as ttc for several months now! second baby by the way - ds is 2yrs 9mths. now in a state as haven't been taking folic acid (thought pregnancy was supposed to make you doolally not ttc!) and have been drinking too - when i bled i thought that was it for another month so didn't worry about all those things you're not supposed to do?!

Helsbels · 11/11/2003 13:38

congratulations Madgirl!! I tested after about 5 glasses of wine on Sunday as I realised it didn't taste quite right!! Never mind!!

Jemma7 · 11/11/2003 14:34

Congratulations Madgirl

Your doctor should prescribe you with Folic Acid - mine did as i hadn't been taking prior to conception!

Don't worry too much about the drinking either majority of people i know did not find out they were pregnant until 7-8 weeks and had been drinking heavily the whole time - i know people say this is the most important time for fetal development but the little beauties seem to be really resiliant around this time too!

too late - have just bought some from boots!
i feel very sick this time - no nausea at all with ds, does this mean it's a girl?! (just joking, dh convinced it's a girl, i think another boy). anyone going to find out?

Helsbels · 11/11/2003 15:05

I feel sick too - all the time - didn't with first one but this is a boy too ( I don't know but I know) It has to be a boy as I can't afford to buy all girls clothes!!!! Not going to find out as I am already convinced I am right... would be nice to have a little girl tho' with curly blonde hair and dimples and lilac organza dresses and no scuffed knees or bloodied elbows wher she is always playing football..... and someone to stand up with me against no sport on TV

madgirl · 11/11/2003 15:28

how old is ds helsbels?

Jemma7 · 11/11/2003 15:31

Not going to find out but mu is already sure it's a girl - said the minute i told her it would be a girl and now keeps refering to "her granddaughter"

However, every other member of mine and DP's family think it will be a boy - DP is one of 4 boys, and for 3 gerations before his dad there were all boys!
However, SIL (on DP's side) had a beautiful baby girl this may so maybe, maybe not!

I'm honestly not fussed either way - have names we like for both sex's so as long as my little twiglett is healthy that's all that matters! Although Dp keeps hinting that it's not right to have an older girl and younger boy - the boy has to be older to look out for his little sister! Bless him

DS is 2.2 and a little darling However, when asked if he would like mummy to have a baby he says no - He's the baby!!

Egypt · 11/11/2003 21:53

hi girls
congrats madgirl
niknik - no not having blood test as well as my docs wont do it if have had nuchal.. they say the results can differ as bloods not so reliable, which could end up in more invasive tests. jemma, the nuchal gives you a risk of 1 in so many of having a downs baby. this is calculated with the size of the nuchal fold and your age risk factor. very mathematical, but is still sposed to be more reliable than the blood tests.

madgirl · 12/11/2003 15:35

hi everyone, just checking in! since i found out yesterday morning i just want to try and really enjoy this pregnancy. i stressed so much with ds about this and that. v glad that we will be at our biggest in spring- much easier clothes wise! everyone else ok? egypt re nuchal i am an old mad girl (36) so i guess high risk - do you know if i will be offered an amnio etc??

Jemma7 · 12/11/2003 15:36

So is age a big factor in whether the baby is downs or not?

I am quite young so if it is only relevant to older people i wont bother.

OP posts:
M2T · 12/11/2003 15:40

Jemma it is a HUGE factor. I think over the age of 35 the odds really climb quickly.

I was 23 when I was pg with ds and I didn't bother. I'm 25 now and I won't bother with the next one either. And I had never heard of a Nuchal Fold scan until I found MN!

Madgirl my Mum was 36 and 39 when she was pg with my 2 wee brothers and she was offered and Amnio both times. I think over the age of 35 you are urged to have one.

madgirl · 12/11/2003 15:48

now don't rub it in jemma7!! with ds our nuchal measurements were done at the same time as the 12-week regular dating scan, and not an extra. i have to say, i was more neurotic for ds about the baby having cleft palate or sth like that - used to have terrible dreams about it. then i used to harrass anyone i knew/met asking them if even a drop of alcohol had touched their lips while they were pregnant. dh used to go on and on at me saying "everything in moderation" but it didn't stop me! i also used to accost women in the street asking them if they were happy with their pushchair choice. Now you know why my name here is madgirl.

Jemma7 · 12/11/2003 15:48

I don't think i will bother then - age is definitely on my side - not meant to be smug but if it's the case for people late 30's then there is definitely no need for me to have it!

Phew, one less thing to worry about!

I know i said i wouldn't wish this pregnancy away and would try to enjoy it but i wish the next 5 and a half weeks would just hurry up!
I'm sick of everytime i go to the loo checking to make sure everything is "OK" down there and there's no blood! Which there hasn't been thankfully!

Anyone else still getting period like ache's?

madgirl · 12/11/2003 15:49

M2T -do you know what the miscarriage risks are these days associated with amnio? i know 36 is no spring chicken, but it makes me sound positively geriatric! and a bit anxious to be honest.

madgirl · 12/11/2003 16:06

sorry me again. how do you get rid of a nagging headache? painkillers off limits huh?

dot1 · 12/11/2003 16:10

Hello! Just to say that I got a really bad muscle spasm in my neck when I was about 8 - 10 weeks pregnant and my GP said it was fine to take Brufen early on in pregnancy, just not later on. Thank God - because paracetamol were rubbish!

Jemma7 · 12/11/2003 16:12

Think paracetamol is OK in small doses if headache is really really bad but don't quote me!

Typical - have been as fit as a fiddle for months then as soon as i fall pregnant i come down with a bloody cold!

My colds last for weeks too and only usually go when i've been given anti-biotics - Great

OP posts:
M2T · 12/11/2003 16:15

Madgirl - I didn't mean the risks were huge after 35, I jsut meant that there is a huge increase in risk after the age of 35. The risk is still relaitively small though. Didn't mean to worry you. Both my brothers are absolutely fine.

I'm not sure what the risk of miscarriage is I'm afraid. I have a few figures floating about in my head, but I;m not certain so I'll just say nowt!

You're not geriatric yet!

M2T · 12/11/2003 16:19

Jemma - The cold is a virus, so antibiotics won't help. You must be developing secondary bacterial infections (chest/throat/ear?). I had a chest infection when I was 18wks pg with ds. I was told to take Paracetamol for my temperature and was given antibiotics and ds is fine.

I actually found myself fighting off infections better when I was pg coz I was MUCH healthier.... no alcohol, lots of vitamins and eating better foods. So your body might surprise you this time Jemma.

Jemma7 · 12/11/2003 16:24

That must be what it is M2T as they last sooooooo long and don't seem to lighten up either - just get worse and worse - probably get a secondary infection too!

I hope my bosy will surprise me - i'm not the healthiest person around but am hoping to start going swimming once a week and do lots of walking to try and get me fit - have decided when baby arrives as it will be July i am going to walk everywhere to try and lose my weight and show of my buggy of course

Well, seem fine and dandy today! No sniffle's just sneeze every so often!

Question for anyone who has been through this before:
What actually happens at your first midwife appointment? I went to see doc on Friday and she made an appopintment for me to visit my midwife on Tuesday next week just not really sure what to expect!
