hmmm I am going to have a look at this thread of yours... did it have good info... I also want to buy things second hand - which is all the more reason why I want to start early ... so I can get all tje bargains!!!

kri5ty · 14/07/2011 12:41

you can find it here lala

That whyi did it... as everytime i spot a bargain on ebay i bid and hope for the best!!

kri5ty · 14/07/2011 12:42

there is one really good post, which lists everything!! even down to the best maternity pads lol

figgygal · 14/07/2011 13:41

I didnt have a weigh in or heartbeat check at 16 weeks either does seem inconsistent.

We have bought a few things and been given some from friends and family with kids but mainly waiting for the 20 weeks scan to know everything is ok and to know whether it is a boy or girl and then i am sure i will bankrupt myself with buying stuff. DH wants to start kitting out the nursery but will mean we lose our main spare bedroom laundry room

I have decided i am on a reverse diet whereas before i would eat ryvita, cereal bars etc i am now on sandwiches and kit kats (and chips unfortunately). Its true that those little changes make all the difference).

figgygal · 14/07/2011 13:48

As for bargains i got a 3 panel child gate off ebay last night for £25 including postage rather than £70, i have an awkward open plan house with no doors downstairs and pets that will have to be separated from baby somehow so need the gate sooner rather than later. Also we have to climb over a barrier at the bottom on the stairs so they cant get upstairs and i wont be able to do that much longer especially when i cant see my own feet, people will think we are barmy having a baby gate up months before its even born let alone before i can move around on its own.

mopsytop · 14/07/2011 15:48

Hi girls, I didn't have a weigh in either (phew!) but I think I have put on 4 or 5 pounds - BUT I was overweight to start with, the heaviest I have ever been, actually a good bit over BMI 25 - normally I hover happily around 24 (pretty sporty so I feel happy and healthy at that) but I tore a muscle in my calf very badly in Jan and piled on the pounds when I was out of action. I hate feeling podge! Will have to diet like a mad thing once baby arrives So I was glad not to be weighed and remind myself :)

The midwife said listening to the heartbeat was only for my reassurance, apparently it's not actually 'part' of the 16 week check-up. So I guess I just got a nice midwife!

Ugh maternity pads - not looking forward to that bit. Apparently you have to wear them for weeks! I normally use a mooncup but that won't be possible the first few weeks.

So we must remember to set up a non-disposable nappy thread when we pop for mutual information and support. From what I can tell it's WELL worth the effort if we can persevere both in terms of money and also green credential. Although to be entirely honest, the money is a bigger factor for me, although it's nice to be green too. Re: the poo, I think you can scoop most of it off into the loo with a baby wipe from what my friend said. The poo doesn't make the washing machine smell either, don't worry!!!!

kri5sty thanks for the link... I can't wait to go through it. It sounds perfect... whereelse to get all the details but from all the mums who have done it all before!

figgygal I too am waiting for the 20 week scan to make sure all is good to actually start the shopping process and set up the nursery for mr or miss baby. And yes - pregnancy is the time to reverse diet... chocolate brownies seem to be my number one choice... and the beauty is that it is all going to my gut... neatly hidden by my bump :o

mopsytop what is a mooncup?

Unfortunately I have no family and friends with kids to get all the loans/hand me downs. And usually I am too lazy to be thrifty if it requires more work - but DH and I have just exchanged on a place and heading rapidly towards brokesville. So I really need to get organised and ebay, gumtree + freecycle and going to be my most visited websites... after this one ofcourse :)

mopsytop · 14/07/2011 16:12

lala this is a mooncup: www.mooncup.co.uk/about-the-mooncup.html

You only have to buy one (about £20) and that's it forever! You can sterilise it by boiling for 7 minutes but you don't have to do that every month, every few months is fine, you can just wash with soap and water. It really made my life so much easier as I get really heavy periods and it holds way more than a tampon. I have saved so much already in a few years using it. I love the way being green often means helping me be a cheapskate :)

Hmm with the disposable nappies, wanting to buy second-hand and mooncup I sound a bit like a green freak but I'm not really (although there's nothing wrong with that! but I could be a LOT better) but actually being a poor PhD student has made me be economical in lots of ways, that then also turn out to be pretty green. So I can be cheap and get to feel smug!!!

OP posts:
kri5ty · 14/07/2011 17:19

Mopsy that looks pretty good, I haven't had a period for years due to my pill... but I will one day!! So many questions! Do they feel strange, being lower down than tampons? Is it messy when you take it out? X

mopsytop · 14/07/2011 19:13

No, you can't really feel it at all except sometimes when you go to the loo but it is very secure! I think squeezing muscles to pee pushes it down a bit but it pops right back up without you having to do anything. Can't feel it at all otherwise, even when doing strenuous exercise. I thought it would take longer to get used to than it did actually. Very easy to use. When taking it out, if you are super heavy like me you have to be careful sometimes but I suspect for most people it never even nearly fills up, so as long as you are careful to take it out straight it's no problem. You just tip it down the loo, rinse and pop back in. In a public loo situation you can even apparently (!!!!) pee on it to clean it as urine is sterile when it leaves the body, but I have to say, I have never gone that far !!! It is rare you have to change it anyway when out and about, again I suspect only if you have ridiculously heavy periods like me. I really think it's the brilliant. I am a bit of a Mooncup evangelist I think it's so great!

OP posts:
newartriotstar · 14/07/2011 21:36

I've always wanted to get a mooncup but have never had the guts to actually buy/use one. I may have to get one once my periods resume, you've made them sound much less scary than I thought mopsytop!

kri5ty · 15/07/2011 07:43

yes i agree!! Mopsy you should be on commission for them! As i think i shall get one when mine resume (if i don't go back on the pill!) i like how you can self sterilize too haha

figgygal we have a baby gate up already too... to get the cat used to not going in the babies room!! people thought i was a bit mad when i bought it!

kri5ty · 15/07/2011 08:16

Why do people feel the need to comment on your weight lol .. i nearly snapped at my sil the other day!! I was only 8 stone before i got preg, and now im about 9 stone 4, and she decided to comment "oooo are you sure its not twins? you are very big for how far along you are!" to which i had to bite my toungue from replying wth " yes but i still weigh less than you, im nearly 5 months pregnant, and im in size 10 clothes!" Angry

rant over... its still bugging me now! MUST BE THE OLD HORMONES!! ooo didn;tmean to put caps lock on... but it goes quite well!

mopsytop · 15/07/2011 10:16

That would be so annoying kri5ty, luckily no one has done that to me yet! I read a brilliant comment to say on another thread if someone comments on your weight: "well I'm pregnant, what's your excuse?" but I am not sure I'd ever dare to say it!

I was I was in size 10 clothes - I am in size 14 now!!! I was never ever a size 14 before. I am going to have to diet so hard to get back to my nice 10-12. On the other hand, it will be like having a brand new wardrobe, it will be so long since I've worn my normal clothes!

OP posts:
mopsytop · 15/07/2011 10:16

I wish I meant to say !

OP posts:
kri5ty · 15/07/2011 10:37

exactly mopsy... think of it as a whole new wardrobe!!
I am not worrying too much about getting back to pre pregnancy weight, i'm going to give myself 9 months to do it... although i know f i donlt manage it i will be quite upset!! lol

Im sure running around after a baby will be a good workout? lol

kri5ty · 15/07/2011 10:37

Ps... i nearly said that to her... but i thought it was a bad idea!!

mopsytop · 15/07/2011 10:42

Apparently breastfeeding is good for losing weight but my sister said it didn't do anything for her and she didn't go back to her normal slim weight until she stopped breastfeeding. But so long as I try and stay reasonably healthy and not stuff my gob with junk for my pregnancy, I think there's no point in my worrying. I have lots of fruit to snack on at work and granola bars but am limiting myself to one a day!

TeacupTempest · 15/07/2011 10:59

HI everyone! Keep reading this thread but rarely post. I am 18 +3 getting a bit impatient/panicky now that I haven't felt movement yet. Well I don't think I have. I had fluttering last week but I think they actually were wind!

My bump seems to have suddenly appeared (was quite slim to begin with but now have a noticeable (I think) bump) though it still seems bigger at night that in the morning.

I want to be kicked!!!!!! (Never thought I would say that!)

kri5ty · 15/07/2011 11:14

hey teacup :) im 18+3 also!! and i ave not felt anything yet... i thought i felt flutterings a few weeks back.... but must have been wind!!

mopsy i keep eating junk, crisps etc :( i just cant be healthy! i have gone right off it! Plus im too tired to cook nice meals, so just get pizza etc or what ever is in the freezer :(

mopsytop · 15/07/2011 11:27

Mmm you have given me a craving for crisps. Salt and vinegar. My mouth is literally watering. My tuna salad wrap and apple for lunch are beginning to feel distinctly unappetising!

OP posts:
mopsytop · 15/07/2011 11:28

(Have you tried the Coop Truly Irresistible Salt and Vinegar crisps? Yuuuummmmmm! Can't buy them or will eat the whole big bag in one go!)

OP posts:
newartriotstar · 15/07/2011 11:30

I haven't put weight on yet. I actually lost weight in the first bit because I felt so sick all the time and didn't eat very much at all. I'm back to my pre-pregnancy weight now but am now eating total crap so it's only a matter of time before the weight creeps on. Crisps seem to be my big weakness at the moment. I'm still in the same clothes as before but am just folding down waistbands etc. I got a pair of maternity jeans last week but they keep slipping down around my arse :/

Still off work, I'm actually starting to enjoy the relaxation now and the guilt is fading away!

mopsytop · 15/07/2011 11:43

oh dear, wish hadn't talked about food. Am now STARVING! I could eat 3 burgers, 5 cakes and ten packs of crisps! NOW. IN MY BELLY!!!! ARGH!

OP posts:
mopsytop · 15/07/2011 11:56

I am eating an apple instead.
