Hello,

This may be a bit early as I know a lot can happen this early on but thought I would tentively see if there is anyone else in the same situation. Hmm

I found out I am 4 weeks pregnant this weekend. I am trying not to get too excited as it is so early but am finding it hard not to be! Blush

We have told my mum but have decided not to tell anyone else yet hence the reason I am here as I am desperate to talk about it.

Would anyone else like to join me on the 12 week wait and share feelings and experiences?

Does everyone who's pregnant get free prescriptions? - sorry really niave here - went to docs on a v. hectic day - computers all down etc, guess I'll catch up when I get my MW appoint! Thanks for info about packs etc. - glad I'm not missing out on anything major.

Danilou22 · 28/10/2010 20:12

Yes, everyone pregnant gets free prescriptions and dental treatment, which I am really cross about as I forked out nearly £200 at the dentist last month!!!! Just ask your docs for a form x

Hi everyone, I'm in the 12 week wait too... am 5+1 and have my first appt with the mw next tuesday. I'm so excited, but so scared at the same time - I really hope that things stay ok, and the bean sticks! I've been getting a bit of nausea and quite a bit of cramping - it woke me up in the night last night which freaked me out a bit! All these changes in your body, it's so difficult to know what's normal and what might not be!

tebbles · 28/10/2010 21:15

Hi! Can I join too. Found out yesterday that I am 5 weeks! Only just started trying and completely not expected, so am really surprised by it and still not completely believing it yet. Have no signs yet at all, apart from feeling bloated and finding some floral perfume/cleaning products smells too strong and overpowering. Not sure how I am going to keep quiet about it, have calculated that I wont be able to tell anyone until around Christmas!

tebbles · 28/10/2010 21:30

Just reading your posts some of you have been to the doctors quite early. I was hoping not to go until around 11 weeks (unless I was feeling unwell of course).

I don't like going to doctors as I always catch some sort of cold/flu after visiting and I dislike the waiting rooms etc.

Also even though I am signed up with a doctor I have ever actually had an appointment there before as I haven't needed to and only moved to the area last year.

Do I have to go earlier than 11 weeks to get put on the system and to get appointments booked up through them? Have checked NHS website and it says to make an appointment when you test positive, but is it really necessary so early on?

Danilou22 · 28/10/2010 21:31

Yes ... roll on Christmas. I just had to tell one of my best friends not to bother getting me Take That tickets this year. I have said because I think we are 'going away' she will understand when I tell her. I am going to be very cross if my bean does not stick and I have not got a ticket!!!

I am in a dialema. I would have told my friend but I have not told my sisters yet. The reason being that one of them has been trying for a baby for years and had a couple of IVF attempts that have not worked.

I am in two minds as to if it would be better just to tell her now or rather than upset her for nothing if anything goes wrong tell her in a while (my mum has suggested after first MW appointment) It is so hard and I know she is going to be upset but I so want to tell my other sister as she will be so excited!! I can't tell one without the other though!

OP posts:
tebbles · 28/10/2010 21:46

Danilou your sister might be more upset that you didn't want to share your good news with her if the worst case scenario does happen, and she somehow finds out.

Also if she has shared her struggles with infertility and IVF with you, she might be hurt that you felt you couldnt share your early pregnancy experience with her.

Danilou22 · 28/10/2010 21:51

I know, I have been thinking this. I just don't know what to do for the best. Also I am not sure she will take it well from me and am wondering if I should ask my mum to tell her Blush It is so hard I don't know what to do!

OP posts:
JBrd · 28/10/2010 22:54

Danilou - I also agree that you should tell your sister, she of all people will probably understand what this means to you!

I also think that you should tell her, not your mum - after all, it's your news, not your mum's! I'd be livid if anyone dared to tell my news...

Piglet33 · 28/10/2010 23:41

Congrats everyone! I'll be 7 weeks on Saturday and very excited and very nervous about it all!

Went to see my GP at four weeks and he was very off hand about the whole thing and said I should wait to get something in the post for an appointment for 12 week scan. Thing is, I keep reading about everyone having midwife appointments too, but he made no mention of that. Have I missed something?!

catherineps · 29/10/2010 08:40

Hi Piglet,

I don't know how they do it in different places, but my GP gave me the MW's number and said to ring her next week. I think she books the scan, but there seem to be different systems in different areas.

tebbles I think you should go - you won't get a 12 week scan at short notice probably?

yellowtomato · 29/10/2010 09:40

Tebbles the doctors appt is quite underwhelming, mine just put me in the 'system' and asked if I was taking folic acid. Being in the system meant that 2 weeks later I have my midwife appt for when I'll be almost 9 weeks and scan for 12 weeks booked.

However, I know it changes from area to area and here i didn't have to go via my gp I could have contacted the midwife team directly. Maybe that is an option? Not sure how you find out (pharmacist told me when I was buying a pregnancy test!) but you might be able to look it up on you PCT website or something?

It does seems so random what the procedure is around the country.

Danilou it is a tough situation but I think you should tell her yourself sooner rather than later. When I'd just had a miscarriage a close friend became pregnant and didn't tell me and I would have much preferred to know. But I guess you know her and the situation better.

JBrd · 29/10/2010 11:21

Piglet33 - I never saw my GP at all, when I called them, they gave me the of the midwife straightaway, who I then booked an appointment with. Saw her at 8 weeks, have to go back at 16 weeks, no GP appts whatsoever apart from having bloods taken.

tebbles · 29/10/2010 19:22

I think I will ring up doctors and ask them how to book MW appointments/scan directly and try to bypass the doctor's appointment as it now seems unnecessary anyway. Thanks :)

TransatlanticCityGirl · 29/10/2010 19:43

Oh thank God someone thought to start this thread!! :)

I'm 7 weeks and have to admit, I'm feeling quite alone in this. I took my test at 5 weeks, and booked in to see the GP the next day. She booked me into the system and basically said "Don't call us, we'll call you".

After two weeks of waiting I rang back, and the receptionist said it will be a few weeks before the midwife even calls to book a first appointment. I asked what week that would be and she referred me to the local hospital midwifery unit, and when I rang there, the lady I spoke to was very rude and behaved like I was a freak for wanting to know what was going to happen to me! :(

Anyway it turns out I will see the midwife for the first time between 11-13 weeks. I just got a letter for my scan which will be 13 weeks, apparently this is the earliest available appointment. And I don't even get a choice of dates/times.

I'm not from this country originally (but have lived here for 10+ years) so all my family is back home in Canada. My husband is English and is amazingly supportive, but unfortunately he knows nothing about pregnancy!!! Just that he's going to be a Dad and he's very excited :)

So far I've told two good friends - one is a colleague at work and can help me get out of tricky work drink situations. Plus my sister who has been through this 3 times before. She is amazingly supportive but gave birth in Canada so she's as clueless as I am when it comes to the NHS.

tebbles · 29/10/2010 20:06

Oh no! Now I'm worried that I should have called this week to get put into the system, hopefully the appointment times haven't been booked up in my area.

TransatlanticCityGirl I'm not from here either (from Australia) and wont be here for the birth either so it is all very new and very confusing to me as well!

littlerascalz · 29/10/2010 20:49

Can I join please? I am 5+1 and the days are going soooo slowly!! only just filled in the form yesterday for the midwife, she won't be in to pick it up until Tuesday and have no idea when she'll contact me after that....

Danilou22 · 29/10/2010 21:05

Welcome to all those who have joined!

Just thought I would share this with you all ...

I went out today and bought a new car as I fear I am not going to be able to get myself out of my 2 seater sports car for much longer. I was very excited and explained to the sales man that I am pregnant (first time I said this in public)and why I need a new car. He was great and very nice and when I left he kissed my cheek and rubbed my tummy... I didn't have the heart to tell him he was actually just rubbing my fat and not baby at all Blush

This made me and my other half laugh all the way home Grin

bananarama05 · 30/10/2010 16:48

Can I jump on the bandwagon please?

9 weeks today, 1st pg and very very nervous!

My mum suffered from stillbirth and neonatal death problems before and after me and I stupidly stupidly stupidly managed to end up with the awful "c" word (not cancer! Just too embarrassed to say "it" out loud) without realising until 2 and a half years later after splitting up with an ex and getting tested so am terrified about PCOS / ectopic. Blush (tmi? sorry...)

Had some cramps and light spotting for 48 hrs at around 6 weeks but was on holiday out the country and hadn't had my first MW appt so just crossed everything and hoped for the best. Did another digital test when I got back a week later and it came up 3+ weeks pretty quickly and have had my booking appointment since at 8ish weeks where my MW basically told me the cramps and spotting were quite normal.

I keep getting pains low down on one side which I also mentioned to my MW and GP and both, again, said "oh it'll be fine" and I felt like I was making a fuss.

I was told I should get my scan date in the post and it'll be between 11 and 13 weeks so I hope it turns up soon as time feels like it's going soooo slowly at the moment and think my scan is the only thing that will put my mind at rest (for a little while!)

Sorry to go on, especially on my first post! We haven't told anyone yet so have a lot to get off my chest, a close friend at work guessed as she knew we were trying and clocked on to my doc appointments close together but that's it. I'm not close to my family and am dreading telling my parents in a way, have no idea how to bring it up - any suggestions?!

Hope you're all doing well this weekend :)

Danilou22 · 30/10/2010 17:10

Hi Bananarama,

Sorry you are feeling so anxious about your pregnancy, I must admit i did not realise quite how stressfull Early Pregnacy can be. There is so much to worry about!

I did another Blush cheapie internet test last night at 10.30pm after lots of water and lots of trips to the toilet all day but was pleased to see the two lines appear immediately which I am hoping is a good sign as it must mean the hormone levels are quite high.

I did not realise how soon the symptoms would kick in, so far being pregnant is the most unglamourous thing I have ever done!

  • I have heartburn,
  • can't stop burping,
  • wake up with what feels like a terrible hangover in the morning and can't move in case I am sick
  • I am constantly popping!
  • I am constipated
  • I am exhausted
  • I am bloated
  • I am going to use three times as much loo paper as usual if i keep weeing!
  • I am constantly thirsty!

Apart from all that I am fine although not sure how I am going to cope when I go back to school next week (I am an early years teacher)

How are the rest of you doing? Smile

JBrd · 01/11/2010 10:36

I agree that being pregnant is far less glamorous that I expected...

Danilou - I'm with you on the constipation and the bloating, it can be really uncomfortable. I also get dizzy spells and am really light-headed at times, but I've always had problems with low blood pressure. Had some stinking headaches around 8-9 weeks, but they have fortunately disappeared. Now I just wish that the same thing happens with that flipping morning sickness soon!

Am 12 weeks now - does that mean I get kicked out? :(

TitaniaP · 01/11/2010 11:25

Hi this is my first post. I'm 9+2 and still have a week to wait before my first MW appointment (stupid doctors didn't pass the forms on). I have no idea when my first scan will be either - I guess I'll have to wait until my first appointment to find that out. In our area your first MW appointment is at home - is that usual?

I too have only told a couple of people and also feel very very tired (but not too sick - luckily), but do seem to have ballooned in size!

I've used a couple of TOIL days owing from work for some well earned rest!

Am very very excited and trying to resist buying clothes and picking out names - I'm not a patient person so the secrecy is driving me up the wall!

worny · 01/11/2010 13:48

Hi all
well i havnt been to docs yet im 9+2 am just gonna make appointment with mw. this is my 4th pregnancy and i feel like poo all the time ive had really bad sickness andcould sleep all day lol. Sorry for the long boring post

chaosisawayoflife · 01/11/2010 13:52

hi everyone and congratulations on your pregnancies.

I've literally just done a test and found I'm pregnant! I really didn't expect it as I came off the pill in August and had very long cycles since then, and not really been trying particularly hard to conceive. I already have a 2.5 year old and am so excited! Really want to tell someone but dh is at work and can't tell anyone else before him!! First time round we didn't tell anyone until after the 12 week scan, but I think it'll be a lot harder this time. I'm going out to dinner with all my antenatal friends from last time this week and I know they'll guess straightaway when I don't have a drink (or 8!).

baby1ahhh · 01/11/2010 14:04

oooh, ive just got a voicemail message off my midwife, rang the surgery and shes busy so im waiting for her to call me back. Why am i soooooo nervous!!!!!????
Please please please want to see me soon!

Sorry. Its the first time i'll have spoken to her Blush
