Hi, DS is 3 and we've started potty training him today. We were hoping to wait until he woke up one morning and said 'I'm done with nappies thanks very much Mummy - let's go wild with the pants', but this hasn't happened so we thought we'd just try him with nothing on at first and then pants and see how it goes.

Just wondered if anyone else was starting too and wanted to go through it together?

We've done various bits of nappy free time for months with varying amounts of success, but only ever an hour or two here and there with no consistency to see how he was doing and whether we thought he knew when he was weeing or pooing. It's only recently that I've thought that he actually does know hence deciding to give it a go today.

We had a quiet weekend so thought 'no time like the present!'

Now a couple of times in the week we'd had no nappy on and a fair bit of success in the potty. Wednesday = lots of mopping up wees but a few 'hits' at the end of the afternoon. Thursday was better with no accidents. but this was still doing everything bare bum!

Today we were doing pretty well this morning. Everything going in the potty and no accidents, so after lunch we thought we'd try adding pants into the equation. previously pants = accidents (I wonder if he would forget it wasn't a nappy?) so we never persevered with them, but we have this afternoon. Certainly more accidents this afternoon, which is I think a mixture of being tired and the 'pant effect' and we had a very rough few hours between say 3 and 5. Then we've had a few more wees on the potty and going a bit better this evening.

We're planning more of the same tomorrow but we have a birthday party to go to in the afternoon and I'm in a bit of a predicament about that in as much as I don't want to go back to nappies and confuse / demoralise him, but equally don't want loads of accidents at my friend's DDs party so as yet we're undecided. I think at the moment we'll be erring on the side of a nappy as it's just not fair if he has an accident in the middle of the party?

Anyway, anyone who wants to join me for the ride, please come aboard :-)

I'll have Wine, Brew and Biscuit to help the journey go along!

am delighted to report today's quota - 3 wees in potty (2 mostly unprompted) and 1 poo; 1 wee accident, but that was in the car - she was fine until we hit traffic and there would have been nothing I could have done about it anyway...

Biscuitsandtea · 02/11/2011 18:56

Sounds good rhetorician

We had one wee accident at pre-school but all else OK.

DS is shattered now - this no napping malarky is a killer - am off to put him in bed!

Have started to keep a record of the number of accidents each day so I can see if there is an improvement from week to week

Dh took ds out for a little while in pants and no accidents & none all evening infact while I was cooking dinner he came up to me & said he needed a wee which he made it to the potty for & he done another before bathtime Grin Smile I am also pleased to say he has started to try & pull his pants down & he has mastered pulling them up so next stage is to do it intime for when he needs the potty Smile

Biscuitsandtea · 02/11/2011 19:12

That sounds like some great progress Shaz Smile

Both for your ds and your DH for taking him out in pants Wink

we had no accidents today apart from the car one, which on the first day of going on the potty hardly counts...we got to 5pm without an accident, and after dinner she actually refused her nappy until she had done her poo in the potty Shock. We've 4 days now to reinforce and prepare her for the transition to nursery. I am sure there will be set-backs, but am pleased with today's progress.

Biscuitsandtea · 03/11/2011 05:31

That's really great rhetorician

Fingers crossed for another good day all round today Smile

I hope today will b a good day I have decided to send him in pants but tell the nursery to keep an eye on him & look out for signs that he needs to go to the potty, hope everyone has a good day best of luck to you all ?

Shaz2011 · 03/11/2011 13:12

What a day 2 accidents in nursery none at home ATM Smile good things is he is now asking for potty at nursery Grin hopefully it continues

rhetorician · 03/11/2011 13:57

going fairly well here too; did a wee this morning without prompting, and then held on during trip to library and a bit of tv. I then put her on the potty and she did a wee (this is actually quite helpful, I think). But then she got upset about something or other she wasn't allowed to do and while crying hysterically did a wee on the floor. I assume this suggests that she is consciously controlling it, and forgot because she was upset, and that in time her control will get better.

We have graduated from bare bum to knickers today; at the weekend we'll have her dressed, I think

rhetorician · 03/11/2011 22:47

another good day here - apart from the tantrum accident, she has used the potty throughout - and then as her final piece de resistance went to the loo to do a poo - I wasn't watching her, and DP was on the way up the stairs. It was a bit messy because she is too short to get up on the seat on her own (we have one of those IKEA step things, but she is still too short). Will play with her upstairs tomorrow to see if she will use the loo; then all we have to do is sort out getting knickers up and down in time...by Monday.

Biscuitsandtea · 04/11/2011 06:12

Sounds like it is going well ladies Smile

DS had no accidents yesterday so that was good. So far we're 2 accident free days, 2 days with accidents. Let's see how we're doing by Sunday Confused. Another pep talk before nursery and hope he does me proud again....

Yesterday was a ok day we had 2 accidents in nursery and 2 at home hope today goes abit better so far we have had a wee on potty with me asking so all going well so far keep you all up dated as we go

rhetorician · 04/11/2011 11:26

think today might be a set-back day - she woke at 7, I took off her nappy shortly afterwards and she had clearly had a very big wee; since then, nothing. She hasn't wet herself either, but I can't see that she can hold on for much longer...feel that we can't leave the house and worried that she will not be ready enough for nursery on monday. However, I am just going to drop her off with spare clothes and pants and instruct them NOT to put a nappy on her without talking to me first

Shaz2011 · 04/11/2011 12:45

So far no accidents but have been asking him if he needs potty or for him to sit on potty 3 wees 1 poo SmileGrin

Shaz2011 · 04/11/2011 14:36

1 accident so far but that was down to being distracted watching DVD fingers crossed for the rest of the day

Biscuitsandtea · 04/11/2011 17:42

So far no accidents today so that's 2 days on the trot Smile. Let's see how the weekend goes.....

was right about the set-back - 1 wee in potty, 1 in toilet (hooray!), but then came home after walk and turned my back and was delighted to see her on potty, having pulled down tights and pants herself. But no wee - she keeps getting off the potty saying 'not yet', and suspect she is holding it in...about 10 minutes after this she did a wee on the floor.

And she's just done a poo on the floor too - I think she was taken short, tbh. I guess we just keep going - we have had 2 very good days and one indifferent one, she is still doing really really well.

Should I worry that she has only done 3 wees today? She isn't drinking a whole lot, either.

StoneBaby · 04/11/2011 19:41

I'm planning a nappy free day tomorrow, we got the big boy pants and some BabyLegs to keep him warm... The main issue will be to get him to agree to sit on the potty... I think I'll try to see if he agrees with the loo...

Wish me luck Hmm

sasza321 · 04/11/2011 22:08

Hello everyone,

can i join in?
My DS is 2.2 and started nappy free on wednesday. So far he has been keen to sit on the potty.
On the first day - quite a few accidents (which i expected) - went through about 12 pairs of pants that day and did manage a poo (in the potty) as well. Yesterday was slightly better, we managed one outing in the morning (around 45 mins) without accident and today two outings without accident.
However, the issue is that he doesn't really ask for the potty/go by himself. It's me reminding him/telling him to go. He also can't quite pull his pants up/down yet (bless him, he does try!) Does that mean he is not ready yet? Will this come with time (asking to go) or shall I leave it for now?

Shaz2011 · 04/11/2011 22:41

2 accidents all day but the rest have been in potty either me telling him or him coming up to me saying he needs a wee SmileGrin

rhetorician · 06/11/2011 11:22

quick update here - all going very well on the whole - the poo thing is a bit difficult - she has been on movicol for constipation for ages now, and this is much better, but her poo is a bit loose and she can't quite get to potty in time. So will scale that back and see what happens.

Any tips for how to get nursery to help her make transition - all her wees and poos so far have been at home - some in toilet, some in potty, so I guess I need to ask them to bring her to the toilet every hour or so? she might not think to ask when there are lots of distractions.

Biscuitsandtea · 06/11/2011 20:51

Arse!

4 wee accidents today Sad

FOUR!!!

Only wee successes were when DH put him on the loo when he got up and then when DH took him while we waited for dinner at a restaurant.

Not a great day since he's been averaging probably one accident every 2 days. And not had a day with more than 2 accidents in the last 2 weeks.

Feeling very SadSadSad tonight as feel like today has been a huge step backwards SadSad. I just don't get why all of a sudden today he's shown no awareness of needing to go. as a general rule he doesn't need reminding, just takes himself ConfusedHmmConfusedHmmConfusedHmm.

Feeling down about it all today Sad
