Started potty training today - anyone else want to give / get a bit of moral support?

Hi, DS is 3 and we've started potty training him today. We were hoping to wait until he woke up one morning and said 'I'm done with nappies thanks very much Mummy - let's go wild with the pants', but this hasn't happened so we thought we'd just try him with nothing on at first and then pants and see how it goes.

Just wondered if anyone else was starting too and wanted to go through it together?

We've done various bits of nappy free time for months with varying amounts of success, but only ever an hour or two here and there with no consistency to see how he was doing and whether we thought he knew when he was weeing or pooing. It's only recently that I've thought that he actually does know hence deciding to give it a go today.

We had a quiet weekend so thought 'no time like the present!'

Now a couple of times in the week we'd had no nappy on and a fair bit of success in the potty. Wednesday = lots of mopping up wees but a few 'hits' at the end of the afternoon. Thursday was better with no accidents. but this was still doing everything bare bum!

Today we were doing pretty well this morning. Everything going in the potty and no accidents, so after lunch we thought we'd try adding pants into the equation. previously pants = accidents (I wonder if he would forget it wasn't a nappy?) so we never persevered with them, but we have this afternoon. Certainly more accidents this afternoon, which is I think a mixture of being tired and the 'pant effect' and we had a very rough few hours between say 3 and 5. Then we've had a few more wees on the potty and going a bit better this evening.

We're planning more of the same tomorrow but we have a birthday party to go to in the afternoon and I'm in a bit of a predicament about that in as much as I don't want to go back to nappies and confuse / demoralise him, but equally don't want loads of accidents at my friend's DDs party so as yet we're undecided. I think at the moment we'll be erring on the side of a nappy as it's just not fair if he has an accident in the middle of the party?

Anyway, anyone who wants to join me for the ride, please come aboard :-)

I'll have Wine, Brew and Biscuit to help the journey go along!

Oooh that's good Bertie

We've still not really tried that. DS seems to have got over his interest in that from a few weeks ago and I'm happy for him to stay sitting until he's a bit more reliable about actually going to the loo!

How are the poos going?

Might try that cheerio thing when the time comes - although DS does really like cheerios so there might be every chance he'd try to fish it back out.....

Yes well I decided to try it when we had just an empty pack left so there were 5 or 6 stale ones knocking around in the bottom, there are now none left, he's eaten about 4 and the rest have gone in the toilet!

I suppose that they could even provide a dual purpose... target practice and bribery! (With a fresh one of course Grin)

Am quite chuffed with this though because they are so portable, it makes things easier, and public toilets might seem less scary if he has the lure of the cheerio game.

Biscuitsandtea · 02/12/2011 11:31

That's a good point actually about them being portable!

Can I ask you a question actually about the whole standing up thing. DS tried it the other day (just because he wanted to - I had no idea what he was supposed to be doing and told him we'd have to talk to Daddy about what to do Confused, but how does he actually hold his willy?

DS was sort of squeezing the end of his, and pulling it, which even I can see can't be helpful for urine flow Hmm but I wasn't sure how to get him to sort of aim with it rather than squeezing it? Have you had to give your DS any guidance on how to do it?

I asked DH and he didn't really know / couldn't remember how little boys do it - brilliant!

DS does seem to squeeze it a bit but also just copies DP. TBH when he's squeezed it a couple of times Blush it gets bigger Blush which enables him to get a decent grip without holding onto the end.

It's not really any different for men and boys, is it? They can't retract the foreskin, but apart from this it's just holding and aiming, right? DS uses one finger and one thumb.

Biscuitsandtea · 02/12/2011 12:47

I guess it must be the same for men and boys really. I guess ds will need to observe dh a bit more before we get to that stage! Dh is hardly ever here though!

Hi ladies just a quick catch up yesterday ds had a dry day at nursery & almost a dry day at home which I am proud of Grin, he got up set because he started to wee but managed to hold the rest & finish it of on the potty but he got upset because he wet his pants a little & he didn't like it

Biscuitsandtea · 02/12/2011 14:13

That's sounds promising Shaz - and not liking wet pants is a great incentive to keep going to the potty Smile

Guess what ladies I have had a whole complete dry day Grin I am such a proud mummy (don't mean to gloat)

Biscuitsandtea · 02/12/2011 21:49

Awesome Shaz - sounds like you've nearly nailed it!

We've had a better week - think we had one accident on Monday and Tuesday but nothing since which is pretty good Smile. I think that's the longest we've gone without an accident. Smile

Wow that's ace, well done miniShaz Grin

My washing machine smells of wee Angry

Shaz2011 · 03/12/2011 17:28

Well done mini biscuit
Today another good day I hope everyone gets there best of luck ?

Biscuitsandtea · 03/12/2011 18:32

Glad to hear of another good day Shaz

DS had no accidents today but has been a bit poorly (fortunately just vomming, not the other end Confused) so mostly he's gone to the toilet when we've asked him to go and try - ie before a meal or before he went for a nap this afternoon. He hasn't done any 'self suggested' ones but if he's got through a poorly day and only changed his trousers because he was sick on them, that's not too bad!

Bertie hope the washing machine situation improves. I was googling washing machine last month and there are loads of suggestions including soda crystals, or my mum did something with bicarb of soda, and my sister does something with white vinegar or you can just buy washing machine cleaner stuff that will clean all the pipes out and the drum etc?

Shaz2011 · 04/12/2011 18:50

Not a good day today 1 accident Sad hopefully tomorrow will be back on track

Biscuitsandtea · 04/12/2011 19:08

Ah but Shaz think how far you've come that 1 accident is a bad day! Xmas Smile.

We've also had one accident today but DS is still poorly so I'm sure that won't have helped - am kind of ignoring it all for a while until he's better.

2 wees in the potty today! Okay, DS is far from been nappy free but still it's a small victory for us.

Biscuitsandtea · 06/12/2011 21:07

It's all about the small steps Stone - each little step is a step in the right direction Xmas Smile

StoneBaby · 10/12/2011 18:02

Thanks biscuits some days he does have one or two wees in the potty and some days, like today he refused to sit on the potty. But you're right, we're going in the right direction

Shaz2011 · 11/12/2011 21:09
