Won't poo in a potty/toilet - always in a nappy

My daughter, 2.7, has been wet potty trained for a few months now but refuses to do a poo unless she's wearing a nappy. For half an hour before her lunch sleep I alternate between sitting her on the potty and the toilet while saying that poos like to go in the water and go for a ride when the loo is flushed. She will not produce anything but within 2 mins of having a nappy on and being in bed she's calling out that she's done a poo. I've tried not putting a nappy on her for her sleep but this just stops her sleeping. I've tried not putting her down for a sleep but this just means that she won't poo until she goes to bed at night time which can't be good for her as she obviously needs to go because she spends the day farting! Has anyone found a way to change this or is it something I need to leave and hope it she sorts it out in her own time?

We have a special 'poo treat' box with cars & milyways in. But she has started saying she doesn't want a treat! Hmm I am going to try wrapping up the cars, only 70p each in Tesco so I think that might be worth a go! Thanks for the suggestion kiwi

bebejones · 08/03/2011 16:02

Hoorah! A poo on the toilet! Followed by tears (from both of us!) and a present! (Thank you for that tip kiwi! :)) Fingers crossed I can keep this going but I do feel it is a breakthrough!

kiwidreamer · 08/03/2011 18:26

Awwww yay! I will admit to having wet eyes too on reading your post (will blame 32wk preggy hormones), I really hope she carries on the habit xx

Caz10 · 08/03/2011 20:39

Must be the day for it, we had one on the potty too! 4 days worth, waaarg!!

bebejones · 10/03/2011 16:06

Ok so poo in the toilet Tuesday, much excitement & praise & presensts. Poo in knickers yesterday. Then today I read her poo goes to Pooland 4 times & she pooed in the toilet, I knew she needed to go (followed by a treat/present much praise)...then 5mins later (after getting present) she pooed in her knickers, and told me she was doing it!!! Aaaaaarrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh! Wits end! :(

fizzyliftinggas · 10/03/2011 16:10

bebe... every sympathy, I have been lurking on this thread as I am having the same problem with DS.
He has only had one poo in potty for me since we started, seems like months! Always in his pants.
He had one in the potty at nursery on Tuesday and seemed so pleased with himself, he told me when I got there to pick him up, made a huge fuss, cooked him an extra pancake etc!
Today he is with MIL, she just rang to say he had poo'ed 3 times in his pants today and she has run out of pants.... fgs!!
grrrrr

bebejones · 10/03/2011 16:27

Oh no Fizzy! It's so frustrating when they know what they are doing isn't it, especially after being so pleased that they did it in the potty/toilet! This with DD today really wound me up! It was literally 5mins after she had just been on the toilet! How on earth did she need to poo again?! Shock And WHY did she not ask to go back on the toilet after all that praise?!

fizzyliftinggas · 10/03/2011 16:39

Bless her... it's so frustrating! and so very hard to not shout FOR GODS SAKE WHY!!!
Grin

bebejones · 10/03/2011 17:44

I actually am starting to think she is doing it deliberately! Hmm If you ask her where poos go she says 'In the toilet, not in my knickers'! Hmm and Angry

Caz10 · 10/03/2011 17:51

Am feeling your pain ladies! Dd stood in front of Dh the other day, clearly doing a poo in her pants, while all the time maintaining "I do not need a poo, I am not doing a poo..."!

She has done 1 yesterday and 1 the day before which is wonderful, but the trauma leading to them (denials, messes, tears etc) has been a bit much!

Did I tell you about my friend's ds who did a poo in his pants every day for THREE MONTHS before he started to use the potty?!

bebejones · 10/03/2011 17:59

Oh good grief! Pleeeeeeeeeease tell me DD won't keep this up for another 2 months?!

Caz - my DD does the denials & tears thing too. Plus lots of screaming 'I want to get off! [the toilet] No mummy I don't want a poo!' (As she is mid poo!) Was better today, happy & excited in fact then did it almost straight after in her knickers! Why do they do it? Why? Why? WHY?

bebejones · 10/03/2011 21:27

Don't know if there is anything in this but....
DH 'spoke' to DD tonight as the Gruffalo (we have a hand puppet one). The Gruffalo said to DD 'I need a poo can I have a nappy please?' DD said 'No, you do poos in the toilet. I show you.' and took the Gruffalo (DH) to the bathroom and told him what to do & sat the Gruffalo (puppet, not DH) on the toilet!

Light at the end of the tunnel? Hmm At least it proves that she knows what she needs to do....getting her to do it is another matter!

gilbonzothesecretpsychoduck · 11/03/2011 14:32

Well, still no poos in the potty/toilet. I am grateful though that she will only do them in a nappy - never in her pants. I'm going to go onto the present/bribe plan soon as it's driving me insane. Good luck to the rest of you and congrats on the successes!

Ok reached my end today am really considering putting dd back into nappies. 4 poos in pants today - this has been going on since January and I'm fed up with changing pooey pants. She knows poos go in the toilet, we've read the pooland book, I have a box of treats untouched, she hates me cleaning her up and yet... Angry
She is 100% dry since 3rd January even at night but will not poo on toilet do I go back to nappies purely for my sanity??

Caz10 · 11/03/2011 20:14

Oh it is hard eh scrappydappydoo? Like I said my friend's DS was literally 3mths with a daily (at least) poo in pants - I don't know how she stood it - he was otherwise potty trained as well. Then one day he climbed on the loo and did it, no looking back. But she has no idea why so no tips to offer there.

You'll have tried everything by now, wracking my brains re all the poo advice I've read! Is it the toilet, ie would she do it in the potty?

bebejones · 11/03/2011 20:24

Oh no Scrappy! :( That would just about have finished me off if DD had done that.

My DD will not sit on the potty at all. But my step sister did say she had one DC (she has 5) who would only wee on the toilet & only poo on a potty! Hmm Why do they do this?

I really thought the trouble was going to be getting DD dry, she started off so well doing poos on the toilet & now she just refuses...mostly! Unless of course I catch her at the right moment & force her to stay put! :(

gilbonzothesecretpsychoduck · 12/03/2011 18:21

Can anyone tell me where I can get Poo goes to Poo Land from please? I've found it on the computer but I'd really like the book so I can read it to her while she's sitting on the loo. TIA

I've looked for it everywhere, it was a NHS leaflet that was produced some years ago I think. I couldn't even download it without subscribing (and paying) to the sites it was on! I ended up making my own (using the words & doing some drawings, and making 'Ollie' into DD instead)! If you find it anywhere let me know!

Sorry that wasn't massively helpful! Blush

gilbonzothesecretpsychoduck · 13/03/2011 09:22

I'm considering making my own as well. Something's got to make my little madam poo in the loo!

Well after much fighting DD did poo in the toilet yesterday. She is always really proud of herself afterwards & since reading 'Pooland' she likes to wave goodbye to Poo Hmm so maybe it is working? I figure if we can get her to do it consistantly in the toilet for a few days in a row we might break the pooey pants habit?

Good Luck!

fizzyliftinggas · 14/03/2011 09:54

Excellent news bebe! I am going to have to get/make a copy of poo goes to pooland, DS sat on the toilet the other night and poo went down the toilet, but only because I caught him about to have one and when I looked he had a little malteser there so I wiped it off and dropped it in the loo, he sat for ten mins or so but no more so pants back on, half an hour later, the same thing happened but it was obviously the rest of his poo.... he was absolutely over the moon with the praise he got.
Yesterday... mummy I have just done a poo in my pants in daddys van, whilst Daddy is frantically cleaning him up!!!
This thread is great for the sanity, I know it's not just us! Grin

gilbonzothesecretpsychoduck · 14/03/2011 12:03

Congratulations bebe! We had progress today - she did a fart in the loo!! I know it's not exactly what I'm after but she was willingly trying to have a poo. After about 6 farts she said "pardons all gone mummy. No poo." I put a nappy on her for her nap and I've not heard from her since so fingers crossed there will be no poo in the nappy when I get her up.

scrappydappydoo · 14/03/2011 12:04

Hooray for the pooers!! Progress! I've gone back to pull ups - and dd2 was delighted Hmm she's still weeing on the loo though so that's good as I was afraid she would get lazy but its so much easier now and I'm just stepping back until she's ready. Feel a bit of a failure but we just couldn't go on..

fizzyliftinggas · 14/03/2011 13:35

gilbon how cute 'pardons all gone mummy!'

gilbonzothesecretpsychoduck · 14/03/2011 14:19

It was cute until I went into her room to get her up half an hour ago and needed a gas mask to protect me from the stench coming out of her nappy! How do you stop a child pooing in their sleep?????
