Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Oh yeah, Happy birthday to Ediz & George.

Was clearing out cupboard under stairs yesterday and found a book token . We have just been to Waterstones and found they were doing BOGOF (better than 3 for 2 in the rest of the shop) on a good range of well-known story books so came back with 4. A also played with the train set on display in the ELC for ages and I got him some play doh stuff in the sale there.

Yes A has really stalled on the talking front. He does identify loads of things in picture books and in RL, he just won't say them! He says "aya" for everything.... One odd thing - he says mum, dad, oscar (dog), but if you point to dog for example and say "Who's that?" he just answers "aya". It can be quite frustrating!

Physically he's always been ahead of the game, and otherwise developmentally he seems to be on a par with others his age. Maybe I should take him to the HV?

Yes Lily we went to the nature reserve in my car yesterday and someone had to lend a hand to dig us out . But still melting here.

AngeChica · 11/01/2010 15:26

I found this

he does everything except:

Communication & Hearing
? Able to name 3-5 pictures or objects (knows what things are but cannot name them)
? May have about fifty understandable words and understands more (has about 10 words)
? Beginning to make little sentences of two words e.g. ?mummy?s keys? (nowhere near)
? Able to tell you what he needs (but can usually make himself understood by dragging us to show us what he wants, or using signs).

JustKeepSoddingSnowing · 11/01/2010 15:34

Ange - there are 2 sides i guess. Maybe he has some issue, like hearing or a physical speech issue that's holding him back and taking him to the HV will start the ball rolling with sorting it out.
Or, he is getting all of his needs met (see last line of your post) and feels no need to say anything else.
He has no frustration driving him, IYKWIM?

But if you are not happy, take him, the HV may say go away you silly mum or not. Either way it might put your mind at ease.

Another thing, we were slightly concerned about T's speech, and he has a tongue-tie, we hadn't quite got round to doing anything when he basically turned into a total chatterbox!

Boys are slower than girls normally too so don't compare him to any girls you know.

Hollyoaks · 11/01/2010 15:55

Happy birthday to all the 2 year olds so far and to a slightly older me for the 10th.

JKS - Didn't go sledging as we managed to dig the car out and went shopping instead. Dh had to get me something for my birthday so went along too and made a few credit card purchases to treat myself.

Ange - I would definately get his speech checked with the health visitor if your concerned, thats what they're there for. Was it of concern at his one year check or was he on track then? DD has a ever growing vocab but still insists on dragging us everywhere to get what she wants, often just to stand in the kitchen because she likes too

MM - ouch!!!

WRT bad mammies, I tried to grap dd before she did a runner from me at the top of the stairs and managed to scratch her chest and break the skin.

madmouse · 11/01/2010 16:00

Ange Nathan says daddy and hello, daisy (sometimes - that's new) and 'ar - which may or may not mean car. Have had a clear mummy with a big grin once and in the last few days lots of mummmummmmummms.

Rather than focus on how many words he has:
Does he hold conversations, with turn taking?
Does he use intonation?
Does he listen to you when you talk? Respond when you call him?
Does he make lots of different sounds?

A hearing test is always a good thing to have when speech seems late. It only takes 20 mins and involves A being distracted with a toy to see whether he looks up when a sound is played and a monkey/rabbit dances in a box. Nathan had a few of those. He gets to sit on your lap so it's not too scary.

we have now been referred to speech and language because we are already in the system so that's just easily done but his teacher is not too worried and could not find a box to fit him into on the referral form.

gingeme · 11/01/2010 17:42

George has resorted to shouting at the minute if you dont answer him straight away but he has a large vocab but then he does have two older brothers to follow
We are finnishing off party food for tea tonight. Somehow tastes better second time around
Happy Birthday for yesterday Hollyoaks. I hope you were spoilt. x

Lilyloo · 11/01/2010 19:43

Ange i agree with the others maybe mention to your hv, gp and see if they can get a hearing test done , no harm in asking.

Happy birthday for yesterday Hollyoaks

Phew stopped snowing here (tentatively crosses her fingers)

Dp has gone to football tonight so the girls are in bed and ds is watching football on the tv , am treating myself to a glass of vino and think an early night is on the cards.

LaTrucha · 11/01/2010 21:55

What happened guys! One day off and you all start chatting like crazy!

Unfortunately, totally shattered here so just done a quick read and cannot do more!

Just to say that, Ange - unless you actually think something is wrong (instead of worrying that there is IYSWIM) I wouldn't be panicking. ALl I have to do when I start getting a bit impatient is to look at DH. He didn't start speaking until he was well into his twos. He was taken to a language therapist etc who said he was fine. Now, not only can he speak three languages and read four more, he is a lecturer in literature and DOES NOT STOP TALKING.

Sabela says a few words only (although she is bilingual and so we're expecting delays) and most of them are not clear.

Today, she has been tying herself in knots trying to say, 'Parmesan' - which is her favourite thing inthe universe after me and her dad. It's hilarious.

Oh, and she has a new favourite food - cashews. Expensive tastes my LO

MrsMcJnr · 12/01/2010 17:27

book marking as I lost you! hope everyone is well, had visitors so haven't managed to get a MN fix for ages... maybe tonight! smile

Lilyloo · 12/01/2010 20:38

Evening all quiet today , LaT did you kill it

Snow slowly thawing here , got L birthday pshoes ready for tom !!
Am going to my nans tom as i found out today she has no heating Have organised plumber to come tom but she doesn't want to be there by herself. Will also take her for some shopping as she running out. She hasn't been out since she came to us for xmas with this snow.

JustKeepSoddingSnowing · 12/01/2010 21:38

Lily - that's so sad good on you for looking after her. Haven't checked on elderly neighbour in the last few days but did make sure she had my number and told her she must call me for anything.

I have been a good neighbour and cleared lots of the pavements on this road, no-one else seems to do it at all. T loves coming with me but i do feel a bit of a freak

Have peed off the cats today by (finally) doing their worming drops
Have to their flea drops in the next dew days too

H had his initial assessment at the SN centre today, just a chat really with the Physio & OT, they mostly said he's doing so well on his own that they want to see him in a month and in the meantime if we have any concerns, call them

Um, think that's it, H had a tired day today, was up in the night so think that was it, didn't want any tea. Also hates the bath at the mo, screams the whole time. fun.

LaTrucha · 12/01/2010 22:02

I was wondering Lily!

Great news about the physio JKS.

LaTrucha · 13/01/2010 12:41

The answer to your question is yes, Lily!

JustKeepSoddingSnowing · 13/01/2010 13:05

You can try LaT!!

sleet here now, fed up with this rubbish weather.

PIL got stuck for 5 hours in devon weather last night - had gone down for a funeral. They said it was so weird as at the bottom of the hill was rain, but a blizzard at the top. Then when the police finally turned them round and they got to the bottom there was nothing.

H napping, T playing with nanny. I'm meant to be online shopping for food

gingeme · 13/01/2010 13:56

Afternoon all.
Well George went to pre school with Edward today and loved it DH and I went shopping with no kids. Was very strange and Im sure our bill was halved We have also put our toddler bed up for George and have put his cot down. We put both Edward and George for their nap but George kept getting into Edwards bed so I have just got Edward up and let George settle in his new bed. Edward doesnt always want a sleep anyway.
Well thats about it from me.
Agree JKS fed up with this weather now ....

LaTrucha · 13/01/2010 14:49

Ah, so you are there!

I had my haircut yesterday, which I do too rarely and I really liekd it and so did DH. He now wants me to have it done every month which I think is a waste of money. So, he's offered to give me half the money if I have it done every month but I still don't want to spend that money so regularly. Would I really like it, in fact?

And how sweet is my DH?

Received my first thing I've bought for the new baby today - a galt playring and gym. The gym bit looks a bit flimsy, but the rest is gorgeous. I'm feeling all cooey now. MW appointment tomorrow. 16 weeks today (and sickness still here. B**r off sickness!)

Lilyloo · 13/01/2010 16:50

LaT would love the time or money to have that treat every month , agree lovely dh

JKS great news r/e the physio and H

Gingeme , wow he is really growing up now Did he nap ok ?

Well had some good and not good news today.
L loved her shoes as i thought she would , wanted to wear them for school

Have just won a family ticket on here to go and see the Wiggles at the cinema on Sat/Sun so that is M birthday sorted free and easy (although not sure what she will be like in the cinema but can only try) Have then got a half price pizza hut voucher so may take her there after!

On the nan front. Her heating is fixed but when i arrived she said she had had a dizzy spell and fell over. She then show me her hand which has doubled in size So my sis took her to hospital whilst i sorted plumber. Turns out she has badly sprained her wrist / finger , after two x rays. She then had to have her wedding bands cut off She was so upset and in so much pain
Thankfully she came home to a warm house , i had got her some shopping too and cleaned up for her.
So she all strapped up , have just rung her son and daughter to tell them and we are going to set up rota to look after her.

Still trying to snow here , and no nearer getting the car to the house

madmouse · 13/01/2010 17:42

LaT sorry you are still feeling sick - you deserve not to be, but pleased you are not sick enough to be unable to go to the hairdressers if that makes any sense.

Lily I feel for your nan - it must be so hard to have her wedding bands cut off - I hope they were nice to her in hospital as she must have been very upset.

Nathan very into eating atm, good as I have just ordered him braces - his trousers keep falling down he has just no bum and it is a pain with walking. Monday he ate his risotto then demanded our fajitas and ate some (spicy!!! he gulped down milk but kept eating), yesterday he ate lots of cheese, pickle (!) and pork pie from my pub ploughmans lunch and a roast dinner at night and so far today he has eaten everything offered!

Fingerpainted with him today - photos on facebook, riotous fun. Oh and the rep is coming from the walking frame company on Fri afternoon to see if he thinks it wil suit him and if so what bits he needs - hope it will be a yes!

gingeme · 13/01/2010 19:43

Lillyloo George slept for about an hour in Edwards bed in the end
I think we are in for an eventful night too . I put them to bed at 7 and have already been in about 3 times. Its mostly Edward being a pain. Crying and shouting If he carries on Ill bring him out for a while to let the others settle.
I cant find my mobile anywhere. Its so annoying because DH isnt here to ring it to see where it is so frustrating.
Right off to get Edward up for a bit.
Hope you all have peaceful nights xx

Hollyoaks · 13/01/2010 20:02

LaT - I remember that ms feeling well, in fact at 20 weeks I still feel quite sickly in the morning, especially this morning when I arrived at work for the first time since xmas.

Snow has stopped here and all but melted. Had my 20 week scan yesterday and all was well, didn't find out the sex as we like the surprise.

MM - jealous of your eating ds, dd barely touches a scrap of her food yet still manages to fill at least one nappy a day and never stops!

Gingeme - we'll be trying dd in a big bed soon, that will be interesting.

fillybuster · 14/01/2010 11:49

Lily - so to hear about your gran, but pleased you can be around to help look after her. I'm really worried about my gps at the moment: they're snowed in on the outskirts of Manchester and neither of them is very well. Honestly, as if our dcs aren't enough to worry about! Well done on the Wiggles tickets tho

Still no birthday plans for Tamara...we are planning to do something around teatime on 31st but haven't got around to inviting anyone or anything like that. At this rate no-one will be around [bad parent emoticon]

LaT - so of the haircut and how sweet of your dh Maybe once every 2 months as a compromise? I haven't had my hair cut since July and am really feeling a mess....I know its basically long and straight so doens't need that much care, but I have a head full of split ends and its a good few inches longer than it should be. Maybe I'll get my MIL to look after T next Weds morning and run out for an hour....

MrsMc - welcome back

Ange - try not to stress about A, all the los develop at different rates, but I do agree with the others about getting him checked out by the hv or the gp. As MM says, the hearing test is very unscary and it would be a good thing to find out rather than later.

Gingeme - at the bed swapping....did George sleep properly in the end? We're going to have to move T into a bed really soon, as I want her to get used to it first in her own room before we move her in with A in a couple of months.

JKS - hurrah for H...long may this last

Madmouse - hows the tooth today? DS was (and is) very skinny, despite eating enormous amounts...thank goodness for being able to tighten waistbands on kids clothes!

Happy birthday Holly, hope you had a lovely day.

Knackered today and feeling v sick - thought I was going to throw up on the way to work For some reasom Tamara has started screaming the place down around 9/10pm at night every few nights - absolutely inconsolable. Not sure if its teething or bad dreams - any thoughts? Oh and we have now hit the terrible two's with a vengeance...she's started throwing absolutely epic temper tantrums at all sorts of ridiculous thing...very hard not to laugh, even when its quite embarrassing.... This too shall pass....

madmouse · 14/01/2010 11:49

Groan how do I discipline a willful toddler who can't be left to sit on his own as he may fall but who can tummy crawl. Just got very cross with him and dumped him by the front door but now he's playing with the shoes. Not having a good day and he pushed me too far by repeating behaviour I just told him off for and laughing his little bottom off in the process.

Feel like crying - just not getting anything done today - the house is dirty and I can't bring myself. Too tired in my head. heck I was doing so well and meant to be going back to work in six weeks!

gingeme · 14/01/2010 13:28

x that by 3 madmouse thats how I felt on Tuesday it can be very frustrating it realy can. Deep breaths and try to stay calm. That too can be hard sometimes I know.
Yes Filly a good night after a few put backs to bed plus Edward went to bed without a nappy and woke dry this morning
George went to pre school again today and realy enjoyed it. He is so tired when he is finnished its just ashame Edward wont let him sleep now I have just brought Edward out to let him.
It is raining here today. Has melted alot of the snow but still a bit dodgy underfoot where it is still snowy.
Right off for some lunch now. x

mixedmamameansbusiness · 14/01/2010 13:55

Hi ladies, have been reading bit by bit over the last few days but been mega busy, just wanted to let you know I am still here and will catch up properly probably at the weekend.

xxx

madmouse · 14/01/2010 14:05

Thanks Gingeme - Nathan is a very easy going toddler normally but was on a mission today and picked the wrong day to do it!

Just realised I can put him in his bumbo by the front door for two minutes if he pushes it again. He's been cute too though - he's finally doing that thing where he mummmmmummmummms while following me all through the house, except he has to do it on his tummy and I was cleaning kitchen and walking up and down so at one point he stopped at the junction between kitchen and living room and made clear very plaintively that he could not keep up!!! Needed a cuddle!
