I would also like to say that WHO guidelines say nothing but Breastmilk/formula until 6 months old. And after that, it should still be their main nutrition until 1 year.

As for sterilization...don't get me started!

OP posts:
Naat · 27/09/2009 19:07

Yep, Tee, my DH told me exactly the same about WHO guidelines yesterday

worriedamy · 27/09/2009 21:03

Hi everyone, sorry haven't been around for a while, DP has had some time off work, so have only had time to read, and not catch up unfortunately!! He is back to work tomorrow so will be back to sat in on my own everyday Will DEFO be able to catch up then!!

Are any of you thinking of trying BLW?? I was thinking of trying it, but would maybe a bit more confident of trying it if I had a couple of people to get advice from!! Like my breastfeeding!!

I'm kinda sad there in a June 2010 thread!! I miss being pregnant... that special feeling you have Now I'm just back to being a normal person again, I miss it!! If we weren't getting married in less than 12 months, I think I would be tempted to start trying to get pregnant again!!

wrt the current guidelines, I'm sure that I read that current advice was that the best time to introduce solids was between 17 weeks and 6 months, and contrary to previous guidelines, leaving the introduction of solids longer than 6 months can increase the risk of allergies and stuff??? Please correct me if this is wrong!! I think I'll just allow for Caelan to dictate to me when he is ready, and hopefully read the signs!! Thats the idea anyway!!

Naat · 27/09/2009 21:14

worried, hi! What's BLW?

worriedamy · 27/09/2009 21:20

sorry, baby led weaning!!

Tee2072 · 27/09/2009 21:24

Hey worried!

I am not all that enamoured of BLW. Seems like a huge mess and too big a chance of serious chocking. There is nothing wrong with purées and a few chunky bits thrown in!!

OP posts:
June2009 · 27/09/2009 21:49

Sorry I meant sterilising it once the sauce is in jars and you want to keep it for months/years.

Oooh, there's a june2010 thread? . Now girls, don't go giving advice ;) (btw the advice about eating nuts while pg has changed since our time, makes me feel old).

Tee I think that "nothing before 6 months" is a fairly recent guideline and the previous one said 4 months which is why people say from 17w.
I don't think we can wait 6 months, C. looks ready and really interested in what's going on in our plates also finds it hilarious when something disappears in my mouth. :D

llynnnn · 27/09/2009 22:00

hi all

yikes, i hadnt really thought about weaning yet! I really enjoyed pureeing everything in sight last time so am hoping it goes that well this time!!

i believe the guidelines are nothing but milk until 6months, however with dd1 we started with baby rice and basic pureed veg/fruit at 5 months and she is fine. i'll just wait until milk is no longer keeping Isobel full and she is showing more interest in food. i am also a bit scared of blw in case they choke, but did offer bits of finger food (banana, cheese, toast etc) as time went through but mostly it was easier for me to puree

hi to everyone, i will try to catch up properly tomorrow

June2009 · 28/09/2009 08:31

re: weaning, when I say we're going to start at 4 months I litterally mean just introducing something other than milk in her diet, ie pureed banana or brocoli and try and give baby a spoon of that after her bottle.
I do think at 4 months C. will still feel too young to be given anything else than mostly milk.
I guess that's going to be our next milestone, we could put that in the title too
june09 Weaning the babies and shifting the Mummy Tummy??

Argh, second set of jabs @ 11 today

bigcar · 28/09/2009 11:10

morning all

worried, not tried blw, mainly because my lot were weaned at 4 months and lumps really don't work at that age Having said that, normally around 6/7 months I started introducing lumpy food anyway. You try something and if it doesn't work out, leave for a while and try again later, it's a whole trial and error thing August will come round really quickly, have you a lot to organise or are you mostly sorted for your wedding, how exciting

tee, weaning is a messy business whether you blw or puree especially if coughing or sneezing is involved You can get these I know Asda sell them pretty cheaply, choking is always my biggest worry with lumps of food!

june, no food before 6 months has been in since before dd3 was born, so at least 4 years now. Funnily enough government advice to follow who guidelines also coincided with them increasing maternity leave Hope the jabs aren't too bad for C today

llynnn, I also pureed everything in sight last time, made large batches and then froze it all. I certainly got the moneys worth out of my hand blender! Time is definitely going way too quickly!

Edward is 4 months old today, he's a little happier on his tummy now although not totally keen He loves being around his older siblings, his little legs start kicking and he gets all excited, it's so sweet. He has 2 teeth now, one of his top front ones has come through, might have to take him to the dentist as it seems to be coming through quite high up in his gum

waves to all

June2009 · 28/09/2009 12:52

hey bigcar, I see, so not that recent then .
thanks for the link, that feeder looks handy !
I can't remember who suggested putting a rolled up muslin under the chest/arms of the baby when they're on their tummy, it has worked for us and C. really enjoys it more now, going on her side and trying to roll over. :D

C has had her jab and after the initial screaming she had anap and now seems happy again, fingers crossed she stays that way.

Teeths: I check everyday but none here yet
any recommendations for teethers?

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 28/09/2009 13:24

Hello all!

My BFP was on the second month of trying. We fell straight away with DS. I was taking tests from the day I was due on, after about 3 days of tests, there was a faint line. We were thrilled!

I wear a set of breast pads at the start of the day and I put a fresh set in for the night. I'm not too bad leak-wise, though I do get let-down at strange moments in the day. Couldn't have no pads on, if you know what I mean.

WRT weaning. I weaned DS at 17 weeks, but only because he was a porker and not settling after feeds (bottle fed), waking every 2 hours again at night, grabbing my food and shoving it in his mouth etc. DD is showing no signs at all and I am in no hurry to start even considering it. I do think you have to exhaust all the other options as they have a growth spurt between 16-18 weeks anyway so it's easy to get the two things confused. DD is currently going through it and is feeding, pooing and sleeping almost continuously. I hope it settles down soon. It's hard fending off the weaning questions, things were very different in our parents' days. I hope to get to 6 months before I start with dd. DS has a severe fish allergy and I can't help but wonder if he would have had it if I'd BF and waited until 6 months to wean him.

Skillbo - Are you based near Bournemouth? I'm from near there myself, though based outside London now. I'm also a Strictly fan.... loving Ricky's moves! I've requested you as a friend on Facebook (I think?!)

MrsMc - well done on the weight loss. I've got about 11lbs left to get to target and about 4-5lbs before I'm pre-pregnancy. The last bit is always the hardest bit, I find.

Naat - Hope Mila's teething has settled down.

Llynnn - I also want to freeze time... I can't believe that DD is nearly 17 weeks!

LittleSarah - Well done on the driving. Hope DS's nights are improving... I also love Nigel Slater!

choccie - I don't know how you do it. Your days sound manic! You deserve some R&R lady! Hope DD's meds kick in for you.

Laura - Hope DD's teeth have settled down. I found the bit before they cut through the worse with DS. When they're actually cutting through it doesn't seem to bother them as much. Your HV is giving you old advice there....

BigCar - Another Strictly fan here. Not sure about Alesha. It always makes me cringe looking at the professional partner having to listen to a critique by an amateur....

Tee - How's Adam's lump?

Worried - My friend did BLW and was successful. I think I'm going to try a combination of purees and sticks of cooked carrot / toast etc.

Hello to anyone I've missed x

DD has her jabs on Friday. The last lot for a little while (thank God!). Might take her swimming next week. I'll have to see if MIL can come along too. Don't fancy it on my own with a toddler in tow too.....

Love to all xx

Naat · 28/09/2009 14:03

HI all!

Interesting to see how guidelines have changed WRT weaning and what the experience of Juners has been with other DC Thanks for sharing!

Bigcar, that thingy looks quite handy, I'll look for it. happy 4 months, Edward!! Ouch, hope his teeth are ok.

June, glad C's jabs went OK and she's settled now Not long until your hols!! We bought these She didn't quite like them at first, but now she chews like mad You can put them in the fridge as well for better effect.

Ineed, hi! Glad DD has had her last jabs for a while. We have the second round next week. I don't know if I read it here or on FB but glad the scan place refunded the cost of your test

Llynn, hi!

Tee, I'm also a bit scared of choking I was told about weaning at 6months so I thought I had time How's Adam feeling?

Hi to all the rest of the Juners!

Quiet morning here, laundry and house-chores only Mila is quite OK with her teething issues, so fingers crossed she stays like that.

Back later, Mila calling

Waves!!!

daisy5 · 28/09/2009 18:40

Hola

It is one week since returning from holiday and what a mountain of washing, ironing and housework there has been!!! I haven't had a spare minute in the past week.

I haven't much time to read through everyone's news but tee - I hope Adam's bump isn't too much worry - good to hear they are taking it seriously and doing all the right things.

And june funny you say Calypso isn't in to the Bumbo - Fraser doesn't love it nearly as much as my DD did. I think he feels a little 'trapped' while she found it exciting. He does quite like it if I put it up on the table and chat to him as then he is more at my height and sees things from a different perspective.

littlesarah and laura - hope you are both feeling in better spirits. laura - my advice is to just smile and say yes when people give their two bits worth about bringing up your baby, and then go away and do it your own way. Sometimes it's interesting to hear other people's experiences but often not, so it's not worth paying too much attention to it. Then you can tell them that you tried it their way and it didn't work (when you really didn't try at all)

naat and looouise - hello fellow northern lasses.

Interesting to hear you all talking about weaning. I started dd at around 5 months because the time felt right. I started very slowly and it all went smoothly. I did talk to a mother in the playground who had a 4 month old who had started on solids 2 weeks ago and was already on all kinds of foods because he was so hungry he just kept eating...kind of like the Hungry Caterpillar I guess. I don't actually know anyone who has waited until 6 months although we all realise it's the health guidelines, I don't know any babies who've wanted to wait that long.

I'm actually quite interested in this new concept, where you allow babies to take foods that interest them and start nibbling on them. It's some alternative to the 'puree' process. I can't remember what they are calling it but have an article somewhere.

The holiday was heavenly - even though the weather really went downhill the second week (mrsmcjnr agreed it was fairly depressing arriving to 31oC and on the second last day it was 14oC when we went out!!) it was still just wonderful just padding around in bare feet, going for the odd swim, sitting looking out over towards the hills and windmills and hearing the birds tweeting etc. I love walks by the sea regardless of what temperature it is. We found that Fraser wasn't his best if he missed his morning and lunchtime nap so most days we went out around 2.30 or 3.00 and came home around 6pm. Some days we went for a tapas lunch and he napped in the buggy but it wasn't reliable.

On the whole he was much better the second week than the first, and made leaps and bounds with sleeping at night. When we left the UK he was no longer even sleeping in his cot - he was only going to sleep cuddling up to me in bed or in his swing chair - it was an awful awful situation which came about because of his bad wind problems.

Anyway because it was so hot when we arrived, neither of us wanted to sleep with one another - it was way too hot and sticky. Also the long day travelling was just so exhausting that he slept about 5 hours straight in his cot at the hotel. The next two nights at the cottage were a bit rough and then he settled to sleeping in the travel cot. Because of the wind problem I gave up on the 10.30 feed and just decided to let him sleep until he naturally woke up because there was a slightly better chance of getting the wind up than when he was tired and drowsy. Also if he wouldn't burp at 11.00 we were in for a bad night, but if it was 3pm then at least I had 5 hours sleep under my belt and could deal with it a bit better. It worked quite well and by the second week he was sleeping up to 7-8 hours - from 7.30 until about 3am then sleeping till 7am.

And when we got home he slept from 7.30 until 4.30 one night - 9hourssleep!!!!!

However sadly since Fraser has definately started going through a growth period and he has been waking more and more. He is going for the breast every two hours and last night woke at 11.30 then 4am then 6am then was screaming by 8.30 etc etc. But hopefully we go back to the long stretches again as it was heavenly.

Fraser was a brilliant traveller though which is a great relief as I am facing a 30 hour trip to NZ sometime in the next 6 months.

My BFP story is a happy one (I guess they all are)...we had just started trying again after a miscarriage at 12 weeks (and another earlier one). 6 days before my period was due (2 days before we were due to go on holiday to the same place in Spain) I had this odd sense I was pregnant and so tested at 4pm in the afternoon (yes, should have waited till morning) and it was positive. It wasn't till the following evening at the airport hotel that I had the courage to tell dh, but I couldn't say the words out loud, as so worried it might be another one that didn't work out and I didn't want to jinx it, so I waited until he went to get some coffee from Starbucks and texted him to say we might be getting another chance.

I had better go and put my darlings to bed.

Hope you are all well.

Adios
daisy5

worriedamy · 28/09/2009 20:10

Hello everyone!!

Daisy- so are you going to try BLW?? Don't envy you having to travel 30 hours to NZ... I hate flying!!!

Bigcar- I have nothing planned at all, its awful! I just dont know where to start... its so daunting!!

Ineed- good luck with the swimming! I'm taking Caelan on Wednesday morning, the childrens centre have got free swimming sessions running for 10 weeks starting Wed morning, specifically for 0-12 months!

June- hope Calypso is okay after her jabs, and has a good night. How is she getting on in her cot?? Think I will only be able to squeeze a couple more weeks out of Caelan in the moses basket!! He has his jabs on Friday too

Naat- so is Mila teething now too?? Hope she continues to cope well!! Caelan is starting to get a bit niggly now, so we have started giving him a bit of calpol before he goes to sleep, and he doesn't seem to rub his face into his bed so much!!

Ermin- do you enjoy cooking? It seems so! I love to cook, just dont get much chance at the mo!!

Caelan's teething is really starting to bother him now, as we have a little tooth popping through!! Its where his 'fang' would be- bigcar didn't you say your lo's tooth was coming through at the side instead of the usual position at the front?? Caelan has one tooth poking through on one side, and you can start to feed a bit of a spike coming through where his fang would be on the other side!! So if those are his first two teeth, he is going to look like a little vampire!!

Hope everyone else is well xx

daisy5 · 28/09/2009 21:47

Oh my amy - maybe not - check out this You Tube clip - WHAT A MESS!!!

MrsMcJnr · 28/09/2009 23:15

Hey girls, just a very quick post as the bewitching hour is near and there could be trouble ahead..DS isn?t feeling well (has a cold) and Aaliyah had her PCV injection today. Poor little mite really cried and has wanted to be cuddled all day.

Ermintrude ? lovely BFP story, clearly meant to be

Thanks Bigcar ? weigh in day tomorrow and at the mo I am ½ lb of weight loss ahead of my opponent but she is going to the gym 3 times a week wow, Edward has teeth!! I can?t feel anything on Aaliyah?s gums yet but she is attacking everything like a piranha.

June ? what?s that about nuts, do or don?t eat them when pg? How come you want to wean C so early? It is quite a task. Well was for me, I followed Annabel Karmel?s book to the tee with DS and plan to do the same with Aaliyah unless I can be convinced that baby led weaning is the way to go?..! I was often up late into the night pureeing! We can only get seasonal veg and fruit here so I am thinking about getting some of the summer ones frozen so that she can taste them before next summer. Have a great holiday! Glad the jags went well.

Worriedamy ? I felt exactly the same as you did being pregnant, it is a very special time and I hope to experience it again. There is nothing like feeling the baby kicking is there?

Ineedmore ? you are doing well on the weight loss too. I was thinking last night that I had better shift as much as I can before Aaliyah is weaned and gets calories from elsewhere!

Naat ? those teethers look interesting, wonder if there is anything similar here had a lovely tapas lunch in an Argentinean place yesterday, thought of you

Daisy ? lovely to have you back, so glad you had a good time

Are any of the other girls who were on heparin still around? I still have bruising 10 weeks after the last jag and I know I didn?t last time; I am worried that they are here to stay.

llynnnn · 29/09/2009 07:49

morning all!!

Daisy - good to hear from you and pleased you had a good time. Hope Fraser gets back into his lovely sleeping pattern really soon, all those night feeds must be a killer!

naat - thanks for the link, we had one of those for dd1 and she loved it, i had totally forgotten about it!!

hope all those with jabs/jags this week are ok and dont have any bad effects, poor little things i'll be glad when they are all over Isobel has her last ones next week, yippee!!

Isobel has become much more aware this last week. if i leave the room or go out of her view she starts to get upset! she also craves much more attention than she used to and loves being talked and sang too! dd1 i starting to struggle with this i think and has also become a lot more clingy! I sometimes wish i could clone myself to keep them both happy!

hi to everyone else, hope you are all well x

worriedamy · 29/09/2009 09:39

oh naat, sorry I forgot to say... re: those teethers, I was thinking of getting them for Caelan, but was worried they would encourage him to chew me while feeding... Have you noticed that with Mila? Caelan has already started to bite down every now and again, but seems to be more common while I'm using the shields... I wondered whether it was the silicone feel? He also chews his dummy!

Naat · 29/09/2009 10:07

worried, oh yeah! But she's been doing that for weeks!!! The cheeky one... although it's just when she wants to stretch herself while she's feeding She clenches her jaw and immediately I start going "no no please, no no" No, seriously, I just take her off the breast when I see she's going to stretch... So in my case the teethers didn't encourage her to do it. Oh, every day we find more similarities between these two, don't we?

Llynn, hi! I've noted the same, which is why I take full advantage of nap time now When she's awake she wants ALL the attention

Daisy, hi!! Good to hear from you again and to know you had a good time on hols. 9 hours of sleep!!! That must have been bliss!! Hope he gets back on that track soon. I'd really like to get together soon, let's see if we hear from loouise. Llynn, I think you said you weren't far, right?

Mrsmc, awww glad you enjoyed your food at the Argie restaurant. We got those teethers from boots, let me know if you find them or something similar there, if not I could post a pack for you Hope Aaliyah feels better today after her jabs and that DS is on the mend

Hi to all Juners!

A hectic night here again... it's like clockwork! 12.30, 2.30, 4.30 and then finally 8am Oh well, hope to catch a nap today.

Question, Mila has started giving odd shrieks, but not when she's upset or crying, but when she's playing or wants to get our attention. The thing is she keeps doing it for a looooong time and you can hear her voice cracking and straining. I caught it on video yesterday, I hope I could show you... any idea about this?

Hope you have a good day!!! Waves to all!!!

chocciedooby · 29/09/2009 10:34

Hiya.

Naat - Thats so cute about the shrieks
I have noticed that Elina starts of gurgling, then builds it up to ...louder gurgling and then cries if she hasn't gotten our attention.

I don't know how you survive on all those broken nights of sleep after all this time. You must be exhausted. Hope you get some R & R soon.

Lynnn - lol at the cloning .
I too wish I could do that at times.
My DS's are pretty good with Elina in general but they still compete for her attention! They normally go each side of her playmat, pram etc and play with her hands. This is all very sweet but they also do it when she is napping which is very annoying. The boys do seem to be a little bit jealous lately so I am trying to step back a bit and give them more 1 on 1 time with me.

Mrsmc - Hey there. Hope Aaliyah has settled after her jabs. Poor little thing. How is your DS? Hope he gets better soon. Whats the weather like there? My parents have gone over for 10 weeks (lucky so and sos).

Worried - hi. Can't beleive Caelan has teeth coming already.
Free swimming lessons! Wow. Thats fab. I have had to pay e220 for 9 lessons my 2 ds's. DS1 is enjoying it but DS2 has not even got in the pool yet. He just refuses.

My BFP story - I was keen to have baby No.3 for over a year but DH was happy the way things were with the boys. No matter what, I just couldn't help the broody feelings I was having so it took me a long while to work my way around DH and convince him it would be so nice to have 3 lo's and finish our family there. So....Mirena was taken out and after about 5 months of using ovulation sticks and PG.tests nothing was happening.(although a yr last April I was 6 days late and starting bleeding heavily but never had BFP, had scans etc, all very strange).I decided to not bother with the ovulation tests for 1 month but the next month I started them again.

I had a strange feeling this time that something was happening so I took a test and saw a very faint pink line. I took about 3 more tests and yey....BFP . I wasn't even late so knew very early on that I was pregnant. "Thrilled" doesn't go far enough to express how I felt. And then to have my beautiful baby girl now, I am a very lucky lady DH is also totally in love with his daughter

chocciedooby · 29/09/2009 10:41

Hi to everyone else I have missed.

Dh was away all weekend with friends. I am still shattered from doing the late feeds, being woken in the night by all 3 kids. Its my turn to go off with the girls this weekend. We are going to my friends house in carrick on Shannon. Will do lots of walking, talking and drinking and eating. Can't wait!
Have to go get some chores done now.

ermintrude13 · 29/09/2009 11:49

Hello all

Daisy glad you had such a good hol. 9 hours sleep is a very good sign indeed - Arthur has slept for that long but usually does a first sleep or around 5-6 hrs then a 20 min feed then a further 2 hours sleep. Just need to put those things together without the feed... Love that BLW clip - I think I'll play it by ear, like most things to do with babies. So much depends on their teeth, manual dexterity, appetite and ability to sit up straight - and whether they actually WANT to pick food up. Soft bits of melon is a good starting place actually. I certainly won't be doing just BLW because don't have the time to be watching him like a hawk in case he chokes!

Ineed I did watch Strictly but am not that keen so will wait until the finals when it gets exciting (I know it's wrong, but I do the same with X factor and even Wimbleon). Isn't Darcy Bussell going to be a judge? Who is she replacing?

worried, vampires are terribly 'in' this year so Caelan can maybe do some advertising for the next Twilight film or True Blood on the telly. . I bet he'll look really cute with little fangs .
And yes, I do like cooking, mostly because I also like eating . My mum was a great cook - she's lost the knack of cooking for crowds now but used to feed a family of 8 every day - so me and all my sisters also love it.

Naat Mila's sleep pattern - or lack of it - sounds so much like my DD used to be. We finally got her out of bed with us and into a cot at 8 or 9 months - 4 months of being back at work but getting no sleep was just impossible for me - but I wish I'd done it a bit sooner because she was much more settled after learning how to do a good night's sleep. She still sometimes woke for a night feed, but only one, whereas in bed with me she would be searching for the breast every hour or two and suckling while I slept - lovely when I could lie in in the mornings but not when I had to be up at 6.30! Do watch how tired you're getting because it can affect everything else - do you sleep when she sleeps in the day? The shrieking sounds completely normal attention seeking - and practising for talking too.

choccie my older DC also crowd around baby especially when he's on his play mat. I think he gets sensory overload - they shake and rattle all these bright things in his face and talk too loudly and at first he loves it, then his lower lip starts to wobble as it all gets too much. But they do stop when that happens, usually.

mrsmc I love the idea of having a weight loss 'opponent' . Hope you beat her! Right, washing calls me while the boy naps, byeee.

Hello everyone!!

Ermin, it made me laugh to think of your DC crowding around Arthur on the playmat, lol, with all the lights flashing and toys rattling, bless them!! Hmmm... maybe I should get Caelan an agent?!

Naat- oh no, just as your nights were getting a bit longer Did you do anything different yesterday? Mila and Caelan do seem very similar, lol!! Have you ever seen those teether in anything other than pink or purple?? They are the only colours I have ever seen, they are maybe a bit girly for him, lol!!

chocie- hope you have a good weekend away, that sounds really nice!! Some nice r&r for you!!

MrsMcJnr- so are you going to start trying again soon? {jealous}!!!

June- what are the changes in the guidelines around nuts? I just carried on as normal with nuts and stuff as I dont really have them that often anyway, and the guidelines change so often, who is to know what is right?!!

Hi lynnn!!

Was horrible horrible last night... was giving Caelan his Calpol last night before he went to bed, and he laughed while I was giving it to him. I had the syringe down the inside of his mouth, against his cheek, but as he laughed it must have gone down the wrong way. Then he started going red in the face and he couldn't breathe, it was horrible. DP picked him up and put him over his shoulder and patted him hard on the back, but his eyes started bulging, and I could see that he still couldn't breathe. After what seemed like ages, but must have only been about 10-15 seconds, he started coughing a bit, so I lay him on his side and carried on patting his back. It took another 30 seconds or so for him to start crying, he was just coughing a bit and spluttering. And then, he started screaming which was such a relief... oh my god it was horrible. And it must have really scared him, and I could tell that it scared DP. I just dont know what I would have done if he hadn't managed to cough it up Oh it makes me upset just typing it and it makes me feel even worse that he was laughing at me and thats what caused it. I spent the whole night checking on him that he was okay, so didn't get much sleep last night! He seems totally okay, and hopefully it didnt scare him too much, but oh it was horrible I just keen seeing his face when he couldn't breathe
