Gingeme - hope the results come through soon. thinking of you today
Well done on holding firm! and glad the cashier was supportive too, you never know what people are going to say.

Madmouse - how's you? and DH? tell us all a cheering story of Nathan's antics

Simps - you're quiet, you ok? struggling a little? have you thought of posting on the lone parents threads for support from those who know?

x-posting (i'm typing in a word doc and refreshing webpage) don't know re the oats Q, will google in a bit.

Oh LaT - i SO do !!!!
we always seems to fall out on monday morning, before he heads off to london for the week, was determined not to today but failed anyway, we've made up. but will need MORE determination next week!
hate those kind of days when everything doesn't quite go right...

i've not been ebaying much recently. ordered a Cars DVD a while back in a flurry of lots of dvds. by the time i realised it hadn't arrived i'd run out of time to complain
will leave appropriate feedback and now i've looked he's got lots of 'item not arrived' comments

well drugs doing good things with H's nods so far since saturday. hoping he'll be more awake this week...

actually cooked food tonight
stuffed jackets and DH decided to come back last minute and i'd made too much so he got to have some cooking too - a rare occurrence, lol!

Lily - i'm looking at camping stuff too, though dh seems unconvinced. think his main worry is that the boys wake up early and annoy the rest of the campsite - have you had that? what have you bought? i need some sleep solutions for the boys, seen loads of different options, not sure what's best....

Simps - does this help:

"A question recently posed at a forum I belong to was about the nutritional differences between barley and oats. The poster noticed that barley flakes were less expensive than oatmeal and wondered if barley flakes were a good substitute for the oatmeal. Here's my response:

The biggest difference is that barley is a glutinous grain and oats are not, so if gluten sensitivity is an issue don't substitute the barley. And, as people who do have gluten sensitivity know, you need to be sure you are getting gluten-free oats because they are frequently grown near wheat or processed in the same plant and this can be enough contamination to be an issue.

Barley flakes tend to be not as soft or tender as oat flakes (oatmeal), but they are still a great cereal, or addition to soups and stews. I sometimes use mine to substitute for 1/2 the oatmeal in a homemade granola recipe.

They break down like this:

1/2 C uncooked oatmeal has 150 calories, 3 g fat, 4 g fiber and 5 g protein

1/4 C uncooked barley flakes has 80 calories, .5 g fat, 3 g fiber, 3 g protein

These facts are from the back of the packages. To me this would indicate that the 1/2 C measure of barley would be slightly higher in calories, have less fat, more fiber and more protein than the oats but would probably be chewier. "

dunno if that makes anything clearer actually!

JustKeepSwimming · 08/06/2009 20:27

or how about this:

Wheat has high gluten content. Higher than any other grain. Gluten comes from two amino acids, Gliadin and Glutenin. Gliadin and glutenin are also found in rye, oats and barley but at lower levels.

?

simpson · 08/06/2009 20:37

JKS - cheers for that

TBH M's poos were totally normal till she started taking the calcium supplement.

When I stopped the supplement they improved slightly but now bad again The only new thing she is eating is malties

5 poos yesterday and 4 today....

Think she is ok with gluten.

She has barley in her malties in the morning.

Ok so if I go barley free too, what in Gods name can I give her for breakfast??

She hates cornflakes & rice crispies. I want it to be something she can pick up with fingers iyswim.

Malties were perfect

simpson · 08/06/2009 20:39

On the H front am ok but worried about Wed as he is coming back from Ireland to see Dcs for a few days.

J has been asking lots of questions about daddy lately which has been tough

Have posted on lone parents a bit but don't feel at home there iyswim.

JustKeepSwimming · 08/06/2009 20:43

re H & J asking.
you can only be honest but in a gentle way i guess.

(re Lone Parents and not feeling at home, i'm like that on SN!)

So what brand Malties, have you checked ingredients?

simpson · 08/06/2009 20:50

well the thing is the last box of malties was from aldi. Think she was fine on them, but they finished and box been recycled so can't check

Although I would have looked at them the first time I bought them but not checked for barley just oats iyswim.

This new box is from tescos and has barley in it.

TBH I thought all cereal would be the same but I should have learnt from the chicken nugget fiasco

Was about to feed M nuggets with soya flour in as assumed all nuggets were ok because tescos ones were iyswim.

JustKeepSwimming · 08/06/2009 20:57

Have you found a specialist food intolerance/allergy forum anywhere?

can you list all the things that she's reacted to?

sure there must be mums out there dealing with similar.

JustKeepSwimming · 08/06/2009 20:59

here for eg?

simpson · 08/06/2009 21:03

Oh cheers, good idea

Have to pay for that one though so will search for a free one

JustKeepSwimming · 08/06/2009 21:24

oh didn't see that it was a pay one.
but good luck.

AngeChica · 09/06/2009 07:41

mornin all, up at 6 but good night, woke a couple of times but put himself back to sleep without us having to go in even!!! DH insomniac tossing & turning another story though .

JustKeepSwimming · 09/06/2009 07:52

Wow Ange - sounds like Alek has got the hang of things, now just to sort dh out, lol

LaTrucha · 09/06/2009 08:07

Can anyone think of a good way to tell Sabela that the day doesn't begin at 4.30? [shattered emoticon]. It's been days now....

JustKeepSwimming · 09/06/2009 08:11

I don't know LaT - we have been through phases of dawncrack too.

you can try putting her back down for a while, draw a line somewhere, say 5am. and put her back down, shush her till then?

depends if she's a screamer at that time cos i'd go for the 'easy life' option of getting up with her for a bit then!

sit quietly with her, give her some milk, see if she seems drowsy and would go back to bed? if she guzzles it down, maybe give her a late snack and milk at bedtime?

simpson · 09/06/2009 09:48

Don't know if the wake to sleep thing works with DCs this young...

You are supposed to rouse them slightly 30mins before they normally wake (ie 4am) in the hope that they roll over and go into a deeper sleep iyswim.

Not much more sleep for you initially though

Ange - well done on the CC

Lilyloo · 09/06/2009 09:59

JKS have bought this and this
we have chosen tent but need to wait for pay day , the vango diablo 600.
Am going to aldi on Thursday for lights , air beds and cool box hopefully!
Given that M is being a nightmare sleeper at the minute you won't be alone!
On the camping thread most go to bed early with eye masks and ear plugs in anticipation of an early start!

Lilyloo · 09/06/2009 10:04

Ange well done

LaT
My sympathy M woke last night at 11.30 and i was still shouting at her at 2.15!
Her sleep is just degenerating since we have come back from hol!
I really need to get her out of our room tbh
Last night dp went into L room and i tried to get on kids ready bed in H room. M still screaming i disturbed H
So then tried to come downstairs to sleep but couldn't get comfy on sofa. Went back up at 1 ish and argued with M until she gave in at 2.30 i think!
She is now back in bed

Simps so sorry to hear about the tough ques with J. I guess at least his dad will have to answer some of them when he sees him and share some of the responsibility too!

OP posts:
AngeChica · 09/06/2009 13:57

Have half-day today, Al at CM so I should be catching up on the housework before dentist!!! cheers again ladies. That 4.30am waking is when we often used to cave and bring him in bed LaT. I've been firm with 6am cutoff but in fact I think DS seems to wake for the day naturally between 6am and half past. If he wakes before 6, even at 5am, I will begin the CC routine, exhausting as it is... Is her room light? We have gaffer taped around his blackout blind because here in the north it gets light very early! Sympathies - this last week has been a revelation for me though I continue to suspect DS will wake at night for some time to come. He is a very restless sleeper - if I observe him he wriggles and fidgets in his sleep a lot - that's why I found having him th ebed so hard. Thinking back to when he was a small baby we had to swaddle him for over 3 months as well, probably the same thing.

simpson · 09/06/2009 16:38

Hi all

Am totally shattered here, been busy day.

Didn't bother sending J to preschool today as it would have been too much of a rush after docs so he came to toddler group with me & M.

GP basically said she doesn't think M intolerant to barley (or too early to tell) but more likely to have damaged gut while on calcium supplement so may take a bit longer for true picture iyswim.

I have to go and see her in a week.

Also one of H's goldfish is about to croak it and I have big phobia of dead fish

It is just kind of lying there halfway down tank very still, on side but breathing, so only a matter of time....

Have covered tank with towel (thanks madmouse) so don't feel buggy eyes on me (tank right next to laptop)
But expect it dead in the morning.

Also finally have got claim in for housing benefit & council tax benefit as have been waiting for paperwork, so now the waiting game begins as to whether they will pay mortgage....

Have to go M, sitting on plastic chair shouting for raisins

madmouse · 09/06/2009 17:07

tiring day here too - but Nathan has gorgeous new boots to help his standing. Hsve made pics but will need dh's pc to upload them as I am working on 9 year old laptop that does not play ball.

MIL still steady - dialysis to continue for now so we don't have to rush back for now - feel very relieved at reprieve and breathing space. Also have appointment with therapist Friday to plan treatment.

Out tonight at church group - looking forward to it although very tired.

LaTrucha · 09/06/2009 19:27

Thanks for messages of support! Just wanted to quickly reply.

We do have a - not very effective - blackout curtain in the room but she wales when it's still dark quite often. I'm not sure that her waking time is consistent enough for the wake to sleep to work. I might try it when DH is away again next week.

I have instituted a cut off point of 6am for about 10 days. No effect so far. I've been doing controlled crying for a week with no joy. I though she was getting it yesterday but today she just wailed (and sat herself up un the cot - which she's never done before! Now I know she's just too lazy to do it all the time!). She did have constipation though so will persist tomorrow.

MM - glad you will have a rest. and about N's new boots!

Lilyloo - sorry to hear M playing up in the night again.

JKS - glad the meds makign a difference.

Sabela swam today! I let go of her in the water and it took her a few goes to hold her head up but she could stay for a few seconds and then one time when she saw the side she swam to it. She was a bit unsure but really enjoyed herself too. She went down the slide aswell (with mummy's hands on her). I may have a child who can swim before she can walk!

Simpson - very about the damage the calcium has done.

Hi all

Going to be a crap day here I think

J playing up big time and was up with him at 2am

He refused to join in in singing and dance class now saying he doesn't want to go to school

Unfortunately I think it is all due to the fact that H is making an appearance today...

Will be glad when day is over, not looking forward to seeing H myself TBH.

JustKeepSwimming · 10/06/2009 13:23

Simps - ((hugs)) and strength for today. thinking of you. oh and bad luck about the fish!

LaT - any better this morning? and wow at sabela swimming!!! another thing that H is missing out on until he wakes up more as we couldn't get to the pool, swim and home again in the time that he's awake.

Ange - how went last night?
and Lily?
good bargains on those camping bits
we've got lots of assorted bits, not sure what anymore actually no stove i don't think. was going to cheat and eat out lots though
what about security on a campsite if you go off somewhere else???

madmouse - you ok today? love the boots

Gingeme - recovered from tests?

H slept till 8 when i got him up , then 10-12 when i got him up again to collect T, and looking ready for bed again now. not an awake day then......
got toddler friends coming in a bit and can smell the need for nappy change(s) so best go!
