Thanks for that reassurance.
Also - he's rolling in his cot now, so banging his head all the time. I have a foldable books lining one side, but nothing on the other. Do I need to buy a cot bumper? I was told a while ago they are a waste of money and could suffocate them (?), but I don't want him to keep hitting his head either.

aubergenie · 01/06/2009 11:05

Same problem here too Star - S used to love having his nappy changed, or getting dressed and now he can't stand it.

I was wondering about cot bumpers too as S keeps bumping his head. Someone told me that they shouldn't go all the way round, as they stop the air flow, but I've also heard that they're not safe, so not sure what to do. I do know that you can buy cheap ones in Ikea though, if you do get one.

Rachie - That's a good suggestion. Thanks. I don't know why I didn't think of that as I used to do it when he was in a moses basket, but completely forgot.

RachieW · 01/06/2009 11:06

Jack does the same in his cot too. He mainly sleeps on his side or front now. I panicked at first but then read in a leaflet about cot death that if they prefer to sleep that way leave them and also now they are over 6 months the risks are lowered.

Last night I found Jack horizontal across the cot with his head wedged against the bars! We do have a bumper but he manoveres himself away from it. I'm confused about the bumper as I think you're supposed to take it off once they can roll because of the risk of suffocation but then I worry about him banging his head too...not that he stays near the bumper end but at least he is near it at the start of his sleep which is when he thrashes about most. Also dh who is Mr Logical pointed out that if he did put his head under the bumper then he can still breathe as the cot has bars so air can get through. Thankfully he has stopped putting his head under the bumper for the moment, hopefully it was the novelty of sleeping in the cot.

I'm so glad he sleeps in a grobag as otherwise I'm convinced I'd find him with his legs trapped in the bars, twisted in some horrible position.

Oh to go back to the newborn days when I put him to sleep on his back and the only movement would be to put his arms above his head

RachieW · 01/06/2009 11:08

Aubergenie- we did it when J was in the moses basket too and in his pram sometimes. I actually didn't think of doing it on hol to be honest...it was MIL

RachieW · 01/06/2009 11:12

Oh and another thing J now hates is having his hands and face washed after eating food and suncream being put on. I am building myself up to the suncream battle now. And don't even talk to me about sunhats....grrrr

star6 · 01/06/2009 11:17

same here rachie with hands/face and suncream/sunhat. Last week while DH was on holiday from work, DH taught Q how to take his sunhat OFF. He actually said, "watch what Q can do!" and he took off his cap, then Q did the same.

Marthasmama · 01/06/2009 11:51

Good morning.

Star - M is a complete pickle with nappy changing time. I'll look round to put the dirty nappy out of reach and she'll roll over, I roll her back, turn to get a wipe and she's on her tummy again! I try to hold her hips so I can get the nappy on but she is so strong that when I let go to do the nappy up she struggles away again. I have to distract her and be very quick. I would probably stay away from the cot bumper as Q is pulling to standing now isn't he? DS used to try to climb out of the cot using his teddies when he was at that stage so Q could see the cot bumper as a means of escape. A bump on the head from rolling about in the cot is not going to be bad, it might make him cry but there wouldn't be any damage.

We were very smug thinking that M was ok with sunhats as she never tried to take her's off in the beginning. But now she won't leave them alone. I got a Boden one that had a chin strap thingy to tie underneath. The hat stays on, but M is very grumpy about it. DS was terrible with hats. If I tried to put one with a strap on him he just pulled it, screamed and ended up nearly strangling himself. It was so hard to keep him out of the sun! I have been trying to make putting on suncream fun so try making her laugh about it when I'm doing it. That has worked so far but (I think I'd rather stay indoors than go through the whole ordeal! Trying to suncream two of them before going out adds about 15 mins to any preparation to leave time.

Rachie - M is in Grobags but still manages to stick her legs through the bars of her cot.

Marthasmama · 01/06/2009 11:52

Oh and meant to say, I am about a hour's train journey from central London. But maybe we should go and visit Ronshar as she lives by the seaside!

bethoo · 01/06/2009 11:58

hello ladies , was off line for a week as had leave and both babies had vomitting and diarrohea bug so bit hectic! both are fine now, was getting concerned as Hayden was losing weight and he is small for size already but making up for it now by constatnly eating bless him.
finally got results back from drs and it is still positive so still no idea how far gone i am but app is booked for mw in jsut over two weeks as they were fully booked even though it said on notes ''see mw asap due to unknown dates''. never mind i will prob know myslef by then! lol
the weather is fab here though i tend ot stay indoors as less rays= less wrinkles

aubergenie · 01/06/2009 12:27

Sounds like a grim week Bethoo. Good to hear the LOs are better now. Congratulations on the pregnancy! Are they going to send you for an early scan so they can see how far gone you actually are?

We've got exactly the same problem with hats. I stupidly bought some baby banz sunglasses, but ds wouldn't keep them on and they've gone back on Ebay.

I'm on a mission to sort S's naps out this week, in the hope of better sleep at night when he's better. One of the suggestions in the NCSS is to creep back in when your dc starts to stir and immediately pick them up and rock them back to sleep (or whatever you do to get them to sleep). It worked! He slept for 30 mins and has now been asleep for another 20! The theory is that you do that for a few days and they eventually learn to nap longer. Let's see if it works....

Marthasmama · 01/06/2009 12:33

Aubergenie - I got some Baby Banz too. I'm hanging on to them as they are good until they are 2 so hopefully M will get used to them. I find that if I put them on her, distract her and take her outside she's ok with them. I have the retro ones for my little Audrey Hepburn. I have no problem with the day time sleeping during the week. M sleeps for about two hours in the day. It's just night we have a problem with!

aubergenie · 01/06/2009 12:36

I'm supposed to be cleaning while ds sleeps, as dp's parents are coming to stay tomorrow night. I just can't be bothered.

Star - can't you come over here and do my hoovering for me?

star6 · 01/06/2009 13:17

I wish I could aubergenie. nothing more refreshing than a lovely hoovering
I just got back to work after feeding Q at starbucks - lovely break in the sunshine and getting my class from swimming in a few minutes. I'll skip on the cot bumper then.. thanks for that info. You're right MM the bumps on the head aren't that bad - he doesn't even cry. It just wakes him (and me) up!

Marthasmama · 01/06/2009 13:47

Ah I see Star. I think M must be a big wuss, she cries every time she hurts herself (never anything major) whereas DS hardly ever cried about injuries.

bethoo · 01/06/2009 13:51

to be honest by the time i actually see the mw i will prob be around 12 weeks anyway so i presume i will be put in for scan the following week. i hate this waiting around!

Oh help! J fell back on the sofa at M&S cafe and banged his head. He cried a bit but then was fine. Since then he's smiled at other shoppers, had a 30 min sleep on the walk home and is now playing on the floor happily. However I've just noticed a red mark on the back of his head and maybe a tiny lump. I say maybe as it's on the back of his head so near the nape of his neck so not so easy to tell.

As a first time mum I'm panicking but my instincts tell me he's fine. Should I do anything?

RachieW · 01/06/2009 15:46

Just realised my last post sounds very odd, he banged his head on the armrest of the sofa..not the soft part. Anyway he still seems fine but I've rung NHS Direct who said to get him checked by the GP so am off there now. Am sure it will be nothing.. hope so

aubergenie · 01/06/2009 16:48

I hope so too Rachie. I reckon if your instincts say he's fine, he probably is, but there's no harm in checking just to reassure yourself.

Oh dear, I still haven't managed to do any cleaning. I've been out and bought some food, baked some cakes, started on dinner anything, in fact to avoid cleaning.

My nap plan worked this morning - ds went back to sleep for another 40 minutes . And slept for an hour this afternoon.

RachieW · 01/06/2009 17:10

He's fine, phew! Thanks Aubergenie Just a superficial head injury and nothing to worry about. Glad I checked though otherwise I'd have been panicking all night.

Sounds like you've done loads Aubergenie even if none of it was cleaning, all I've done is had lunch in M&S and injured my child
