No1 I too am clueless about the 'info' on your letter but if it helps I once had to have my head x-rayed and it came back no significant abnormalities, so I presume that there are SOME they just don't cause any problems hope someone who knows what they're talking about comes along soon

very tired Dylan now shouting the house down in her cot so obviously not as tired as I thought, be back later hopefully

cyteen · 25/03/2009 17:16

no1 for once I'm gutted I don't still work at the hospital, as otherwise I could have asked my boss what all that means. I recognise the terms from letters I typed for him but unfortunately am clueless as to what they mean

Whoever sent it should definitely have sent you an explanatory letter as well IMO. But hey, what do I know.

LoveBuckets · 25/03/2009 17:18

My google of acycarnitwotsits also mentioned insulin so maybe they've been looking at the diabetes angle. Doesn't mean he has it though.

Did anyone watch that Great Sperm Race show? Showed how women go on heat around ovulation - of course patriarchal society denied it for centuries, humans being above animals and the whole Madonna/Whore complex making it unseemly for laaaaaadies to be considered so. But it's so true! Men seem to use their animal instincts as an excuse for anything, why can't women? On that note, I'm off to text some rudeness to my DH.

dizzydixies · 25/03/2009 17:18

there must be someone on MN who knows, could you try a thread in Children's health and see what responses you get?

have just dropped laptop from arm of couch [meep] and a tad worried it may be damaged [MEEP MEEP MEEP]

time to back up all important things before I demolish it completely

Steaknife · 25/03/2009 18:45

buckets - obv didn't see the show, but I did once see a programme a part of which showed a study that women dress to expose more flesh when they are ovulating. I guess a kind of mating ritual.

PetitFilou1 · 25/03/2009 19:01

buckets I agree with you 100% - women definitely go on heat around the time of ovulation. It is a shame they don't tell teenage girls that in sex ed.....shame it is not more like Dutch sex ed here generally imo. They start teaching in primary schools there......

Right dh is away so will get on and make dinner/packed lunches blah blah blah (sigh)

Can anyone guess what he has been doing on his leadership course (winner gets a gold star)

Miamla · 25/03/2009 19:03

ooh i'm back in time for a guessing game
I reckon he's been either abseiling or drawing self-portraits

PetitFilou1 · 25/03/2009 19:05

miamla lol at drawing self portraits but even more ridiculous than that

glad you are here btw- need to make an Easter bonnet for (with) dd - I am so artistically deficient - what would you make as I can see you will be good at this sort of activity as a mum!

Off to do packed lunches (ahem) again and search out meatball recipes

Miamla · 25/03/2009 19:07

no1 sorry to read that you've been sent an incoherent letter. Not what you need at the moment, afraid i don't know anyone to ask but i think posting in health is a good idea

dizz how's your laptop doing? obviously ok or you wouldn't be reading this!

off to read other pages now...

pertelote · 25/03/2009 19:11

No1 how frustrating for you - I think PF has the answer, this letter must be aimed at a medical professional rather than you. We have had some similarly baffling ones about Marianne.

With that in mind I have also googled a bit for you and in case you can't get hold of anyone who actually knows, my interpretation is firstly that this letter isn't a diagnosis by a long way, it's talking about a preliminary finding - the lab results - which will be followed up and interpreted by drs. Secondly:
it says they found some fats in his urine which shouldn't normally be there. They don't know why they are there but one possibility is that it's a result of ketosis, which is the process the body goes through when it doesn't get enough carbohydrates - but a result of resolving ketosis, i.e. if this was happening it's probably not anymore. They are now going to check the blood he gave - if the levels of acylcarnitines (something in blood which normally carry fats around the body after they are digested) are lower than they should be, that might help to explain why the fats were in the urine.

So I think it means more waiting for you before you have a complete answer . I don't want to go any further and try to guess what might cause any of that or what (if anything) it means for little Marcus in the future - that is for the specialist to do once all the results are in - and I have NO medical or scientific training, so please ignore the above if it is not helpful or if you have managed to get an explanation from someone who knows what they're talking about! Also I think Dizzy is exactly right, at this very technical level there are ALWAYS little oddities - often they just get better or their own accord or don't cause any problems. Is Marcus doing ok at the moment? If so please don't let this medical jargon get you worried. , anyway.

Miamla · 25/03/2009 19:14

steak that menu sounds lovely! well done on the BLW

who was looking for meatball recipes? i've got a dead easy one...
you need mince (beef and pork work equally well)
some spicy sausages (take the skins off and just use the meat)
a jar of passatta sauce (or you can obviously make your own if you're feeling adventurous! )

mix mince and sausagemeat together, squish them into ping pong ball sized balls. leave them to chill in the fridge for half an hour

put balls into an ovenproof dish, cover them in passata and cook in the oven at hmm can't remember time or temp.. give me a sec....temp = 180 for 40mins
give them a couple of stir during cooking to make sure they're all cooked through
v easy and v tasty

PetitFilou1 · 25/03/2009 19:23

steaky and I've found a Jamie Oliver one for you

here

PetitFilou1 · 25/03/2009 19:25

pertelote Brilliant explanation and sounds likely to be right to me (although I also have no medical training whatsoever)

longwayfromhome · 25/03/2009 19:31

ooooh miamla - I think that even I could manage that recipe.

pureed peas went well here for an easy ?what have I got in the house recipe.

thoughts for all

Steaknife · 25/03/2009 19:32

Thanks miamla and PF
I looked at the JO recipe but the ingredient list looked very long and it got a bit more complicated than - chuck it all together and squish it into balls, which is my usual method.

I would be off to hunt the BBC food site which has tons of recipes but the baby is screaming, I've been trying to get her to settle for an hour and a half. She has fed and fallen asleep on each boob, been walked up and down, done several humungous burps, fallen asleep in my arms, but every time she is put down she wakes in a couple of mins. DH out teaching course, I am very fed up and have had a bit of a cry.

Am thinking of just bringing her into our bed and letting her fall asleep on me.

Poor little thing she is.

Steaknife · 25/03/2009 19:32

PF did they have to do expressive dance?

Steaknife · 25/03/2009 19:34

Miamla sorry, but you can't get decent bangers here so your recipe is out. Thanks though.

cyteen · 25/03/2009 19:52

Aww steaky your poor DD. I'm sure she'll feel better for having a lie down with you.

pf was your DH playing that trust game where people fall back into each other's arms? Picking which animal he would be? Participating in a mock-up of The Apprentice?

Am seriously worried about this hen do after another day spent in the grip of a queasy, greasy hangover that was the result of TWO GLASSES of white wine Need to finish up my baby-wrangling manual for DP. Not sure what directions to give re. milk - I've included all the times DS usually has it, but how to know how much to give?I suppose I'll just say to offer him 5-6oz at a time and if he still seems hungry, give some more. At least he's got the hang of eating and drinking water now so DP is not so worried about trying to get sustenance into him.

PetitFilou1 · 25/03/2009 19:53

steaky I would be crying too. I'm afraid I'm probably a bit fiercer though too and do let Toby cry a bit until he goes to sleep (unless it starts sounding like a pain or a hunger cry obv) He has his music on and it helps him go off (in the day this is as at night he just gets fed to sleep). It is very sweet actually as now if I put him to bed he will sometimes look at his music box and try and bash the button to get it to switch on ds1 used to turn his on in the night to get back to sleep as a baby too. I've always thought it was a bit Pavlovian.... but it works. Anyway, I'm wittering when you need hugs really ....

and rofl at expressive dance

keep trying as I will tell you after I've had my dinner - which I am just off to do

Steaknife · 25/03/2009 20:01

Well that didn't work.
She just got all curious as to why she wasn't in her room and she wasn't at all interested in the boob.
So I took her downstairs and we both cried at my PILs. So now MIL is trying to get her to sleep.

The thing is that she does fall asleep on the boob but doesn't come of it for ages and if I try and prise her free it just wakes her up. And I know maybe I should have more patience but I get so fed up with sitting around trying to judge the right moment to free myself, getting it wrong and having to start all over again.

DH used to sit with us and take her when she fell asleep but since she doesn't come off the boob so easily any more he doesn't like to sit for an hour waiting, so doesn't help anymore. Of coure he can't tonight and it would be the night I need it most.

The little minx has been completely sparked out on me several times but keeps waking up. I am sure the more stressed I get the more she gets. It is hard to let her cry because i know it upsets the PILs, she is doing proper screaming with proper tears.

Mind you MIL seems to be doing some magic as it is all quiet from them.

Hmmm I think I spied some red wine in the kithcen....

LoveBuckets · 25/03/2009 20:03

PF Marble run out of paper straws? Passing an orange or balloon between the knees? Raftbuilding? The only good thing about training courses is the free lunch and not having to answer your phone.

Actually I'm just looking up Easter swimming courses for DD as she's just had a pool party invitation and is too scared to go. Always meant to have my kids swimming early but DS1's personality combined with 3yrs of carlessness got in the way of things like that.

Steaknife · 25/03/2009 20:04

If it wasn't expressive dance, was it making those pottery ugly-mugs in your own image?

Yodeling?
Sweat lodge?
Cake decorating a la The Generation Game?
