Oh I'm so sorry to hear that MyJob.

I've not really looked into this yet so nobody shoot me down in flames, but is weaning 7 weeks early a really bad idea? It doesnt seem like a long time if the alternative is giving up BFing.

Also I may be talking complete crap here but could she maybe have silent reflux? I know reflux can monkey with the weight gain but dont know about silent reflux.

I went to the docs, he has refered me to a paedriatrician so that should be fun. Has anyone been to one before, anything I need to know??

I've got a stinking cold too and I feel like poo Is it inevitable that Poppy will get it and can she get it thro my milk or just me breathing on her??

Went to chemist to get a beechams type product without caffeine [it seems to send her hyper] and they all have a decongestant which is as much of a stimulus as caffeine apparently? So I'm on caffeine free paracetomol and olbas oil

Honeymoonmummy · 30/01/2009 20:34

Oh also, I have the cot next to my side of the bed and as a result I'm not getting a good nights sleep. I slept on DH's side last night and slept so soundly. If we moved the cot into the corner of our (not v big) bedroom instead of next to the bed would that still be ok for the benefits of co-sleeping? I'm thinking of the one about the baby listening to and copying your breathing as they sometimes forget to breathe.

Honeymoonmummy · 30/01/2009 20:39

Poppy's just gone to sleep so I'm gonna sleep too, 8.30 on a Friday night, what happened to my life????

Honeymoonmummy - my understanding with the cold is that you should pass on antibodies to your illness through your milk... damned clever

loulou33 · 30/01/2009 21:19

hi myjob - who said you had to be rational heh?? dont' foget you're also a bit sleep deprived this week as well, just ot add to the stress.

slient reflux is the acid coming up and burning the oesophagus without the vomit coming up so suddenly they arch their backs and scream seemingly for no reason if that makes sense. CSWS will correct if i'm wrong as both mine had very unsilent reflux!!

I would agree with ksal - if you didn't have her weighed today would you worry that she wasn't thriving?? The scales can be way out from each other so if they were different scales from last time, that might explain a few ounces. As for her grumpiness - you KNOW its because she's had THREE jabs today poor lamb. There is nothing wrong with your milk, the way you feed her or you as a mother - so stop beating yourself up!! She's a happy baby and, up til recently, as the mother of a very grumpy baby would have swapped you a few pounds for a smile or two any time. She's doing 'better' than Joe with her development and she couldn't do that if she wasn't getting enough to eat. You've said before your ds is thriving now and he's heavier than my ds1 [whose the same age] btw so it will all come right in the end. I hope you can keep going for another 7 weeks cos i really think you can do it and i don't think formula now would suddenly make her gain pounds anyway. as they say up here - 'she just a wee toot'

Honeymoon - your paed will weigh, measure, check stomach and probably prescribe new meds and review in a few weeks. some paeds still do acidity testing which used to involve a 24 hour stay in hosp iirc but i don't think they will do yet that unless she's losing weight and vomiting all the time. dont' forget your red book bt they usually never write in it unless you shove in under their noses.

CantSleepWontSleep · 30/01/2009 21:26

Gosh, lots to reply to tonight after a busy day away from MN.

I was going to say what KSal did re antibodies .

Silent reflux is where the acid comes back up the oesophagus, but then goes back down again, thus burning in both directions. It's medically a more serious condition than reflux, but much harder to diagnose, as the clearly visible vomiting doesn't happen. Naomi would be screaming in pain if she had this though (dd was diagnosed with it), and from what you say she is a very contented baby, so I very much doubt that she has it.

I am disappointed for you myjob, but can't think of much to add to what we've all said before. You could express and top up (perhaps with a cup or syringe rather than risking her preferring the bottle) as KSal suggests, but if you do then be sure to give her a full feed from the breast first, so as not to interfere with your supply.

How many breasts does she have at a feed myjob, and how does she signify that she is finished?

Will try and check out your other thread shortly. There's one thread from the archives that I want to dig out for you too, so will try to find it later.

CherryChoc - no wetsuit when we took ds, but only because I forgot to take dd's old one! If you go without one then just don't stay in too long, and give lots of cuddles to transfer warmth from you.

Well we've had a busy day. At play group this morning, and then back here with 4 other nearly 3 year olds, plus a crawler and ds and dd. Dd threw up lots on the way back from playgroup, but then seemed fine once we got home, and played happily. She didn't eat her lunch, but had some crackers this afternoon. Shortly after her friends left she fell asleep on my lap (about 4:40), and other than me stirring her to move her to the sofa, she slept for 3.5 hrs, then went up and got ready for bed. Dh stayed up there with her, and the next thing I knew she was on the stairs throwing up all over the new carpet that was laid last week!

Oh yes, knew there was another question to respond to, and loulou's cross post just reminded me.

We saw a paed with dd. He did approximately nothing . Just had a chat, prescribed nutramigen in case I wanted some for weaning (it's a hypoallergenic milk, as we saw him for her intolerance moreso than the reflux), and said to come back when she was 2 if she hadn't outgrown it!

i don't think she has silent reflux and it makes babies very grumpy understandably. It seems that you are feeding her as/when she wants. I doubt she would take any more in terms of volume from a bottle as she clearly knows when she's had enough. Are you eating enough calories. I know you were trying to lose weight a while back but can i suggest that you try eating some more calorific foods for a while [if you're not doing so already] and see if this helps her weight gain?? i'm glad joe's happier but i'm sure he wouldn't mind sending a few pounds naomi's way!!

sorry to hear about your carpet csws and hope your dd is better soon

CherryChoc · 30/01/2009 22:37

Really sorry to seem trivial but I just had to share - DS just laughed for the first time! He is 17wks on Sunday and I was starting to think he never would!

aubergenie · 31/01/2009 08:45

Sorry you're so worried, Myjob. It must be horrible and I wish I could say something helpful. I haven't seen your other thread, but great to hear you've had some help from Tiktok.

Yay - for baby laughs Cherrychoc. It's so lovely isn't it!

CSWS - I hope your dd is better now and you didn't all have a terrible night. I hope the new carpet's doing OK too!

We're going out today as Thames Water are doing some work and will be shutting our water off from 10-4, and it's also going to be quite noisy apparently. So I think we're heading to the coast for some fresh air. I really hope it makes Stanley sleep.

Hi all,

Myjob, you sound a bit brighter today? I'm sure it will be ok if she's happy in herself Now you've said it, I remember being told they can lose weight on first weaning. Maybe even tho sane scales and same time the scales could have been recalibrated?

Thanks to all for advice re peads - it sounds like i shouldn't expect too much I just want to see the 'real' Poppy who smiles a lot and not just when she's about to vomit

We've just ordered carpet for lounge/ dining, hall/ landing and our bedroom - cant wait till they're fitted! All except the stairs are currently hard floors so not very Poppy-friendly! It'll be great to be able to sit on the floor with her.

I put Poppy in a "wetsuit" in a 30 degree pool at 12 weeks. She shivered at one point. I only left her in for 10 mins. I think it was cos the air temp was so high that the water felt colder than it was.

Honeymoonmummy · 31/01/2009 15:18

Obviously I meant same scales, not sane scales

loulou33 · 31/01/2009 16:48

myjob - i'm eating extra in sympathy for you i the hope that it helps. Are you near Exeter Airport?? I have taken my ds1 there on our way home and he loves the viewing bit, its a shame that there is no covered bit as it seems to rain a lot there.

hope you've had a better day and no, you can't make them eat when they don't want to. When JOe was ill he refused to eat for about 2 days despite me shoving a boob in his face every 1/2 hour!!!

glad things are better myjob. I live in scotland but i'm from near torquay originally and my mum still lives down there so we fly down from glasgow as its about an 8 hour drive otherwise.

hope the babies are snoozing happily - nighty night

CantSleepWontSleep · 31/01/2009 20:27

at Exeter. Went to uni there and love it.

Honeymoon - are you absolutely sure that you want to put carpet down everywhere? We have hard floors everywhere except stairs/landing, and I think that they are much more toddler/child friendly than carpet. The baby stage is very short. I would especially reconsider carpeting your dining area at the moment. Weaning can be very messy, and your carpet may not survive.

Oh god CSWS, don't tell me that now, I just paid a £400 deposit!! I just feel safer with carpet in case of any falls and when she's crawing. Hadn't thought about weaning...guess we'll just put some plastic sheeting down.
