Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Sorry to her that, VS. Maybe he didn't mean it all bad (but then again, you know him and I don't). For what it's worth, I'd like to know immediately if something like that happened, even if there was nothing he could do. My brother (perfectly healthy until that point) collapsed once, my bil rushed him to hospital (about 1 hour from his farm), he woke up half way to town, and died by the time the got there. Sorry, don't mean to sound melodramatic here, but what I mean to say - they called us as soon as he fell ill, and even though there was absolutely nothing we could do, it helped kind of a little in my mind at least knowing he was ill (even if only a very short while). Hmm, doesn't make sense, but then again, I suspect I'm odd. Good luck to you all and your dp's grandmother.

VictorianSqualorSquelchNSquirm · 20/10/2008 09:56

Oh, it does make sense sal.
Thing is she fell ill yesterday afternoon, she was in hospital by about 8pm. DP's mum was sorting things out (it's happened a couple of times before, just they think this time is more serious) then his Dad called us at nigh on midnight telling us to 'prepare ourselves for the worst' etc.

SalLikesCoffee · 20/10/2008 09:57

Ah ok, that makes it a little different. Hope there is some good news soon! xxx

KnitterInTheNW · 20/10/2008 11:01

VS, sorry to hear bout your DP's grandma, and not not fair of his dad at all.

George's daytime sleeps have always been all over the place, but over the past week I've made an effort to make sure he only has 45 mins in the morning and no more than 2 hours in the afternoon. Afternoon sleep tends to be about 2 til 4. He's only ever gone through the night a couple of times, and actually that's just without feeds rather than not waking up. He's getting worse in that he won't go to sleep without being rocked now, and daytime sleeps are in his buggy, he seems to like being cocooned and strapped in. If I put him down for daytime sleeps in his cot he takes ages to settle then wakes up after 15 mins or so. It's a bad habit we've gotten into!

Bedtimes are hit and miss. He has his bath at 6:15, massage, PJs on and feed upstairs in the darkened room at 7. He normally falls asleep after having 1 side then wakes within the next hour for the other side. He normally has a couple of feeds overnight, sometimes goes straightr back to sleep after, and some of those is with putting him in his cot awake. He wakes more often than that normally and I stick his dummy back in, sometimes that works, sometimes he's just awake and shouting/moaning for up to an hour and a half. Sometimes the only way he'll go back to sleep is by making his cot sidecar again and cuddling him up to me.

I know I need to tackle this soon, and we're sorting the spare room out at the mo so he can go in there, and that's when we'll start some sort of bootcamp. He's got a horrid cold right now though and there's no way I'll start doing anything while he's feeling grotty.

I'm umming and ahhing about getting rid of his dummy too at the same time so that he can learn to go back to sleep completely by himself with no aids, or would that just be seriously cruel to suddenly put him in a room away from us, not give him his usual cuddles to sleep AND take away the only thing that calms him at the mo? Should I tackle the sleeping then tackle the dummy after? Or would that just prolong the agony for all of us?

SalLikesCoffee · 20/10/2008 11:12

Oh I don't know. I'm a bit of a sucker and think they're so tiny and not for long that it won't do harm to do indulge them and do what makes them feel safe for a little while still. Once you tackle habits properly it'll only take a couple of days to change it anyway. I might be wrong, but I wouldn't do everything at once. Then again, R's not sleeping through, so obviously I'm far from perfect.

KnitterInTheNW · 20/10/2008 11:17

That's just it though Sal, I'm the same as you and wish I could just indulge him forever! I seriously need more sleep than I'm currently getting though, so I need to do something. I think PU/PD is kinder than CC so that's why I think we'll try that. And I think not doing everything at the same time feels right, too.

SalLikesCoffee · 20/10/2008 11:24

True. And I think PU/PD is not even upsetting for them. Saying that, cc probably not either, but I'm a softy. If dh wasn't doing most of the night feeds (bless him!) I would probably not be such a pushover

KnitterInTheNW · 20/10/2008 11:30

see, I'm currently a pushover AND doing all the night times!

VictorianSqualorSquelchNSquirm · 20/10/2008 11:43

Have you tried more sleep in the day knitter?
When A went all doolally tat sleepwise it was because (I think) he was overtired and suffering from fatigue.
It coincided with school holidays so his naps were all askew. The Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child book says that you should put a baby (between 5-9months) down for a sleep 2-3 hours after they last awake and for a minimum of 45 minutes per nap (45 minutes is approximately one sleep cycle) so we changed A's pattern to entail either 2 long (2-3hour) naps or 3 small (about an hour and a half) naps. He sleeps 5/6 hours in the daytime now between 7-7 and is consistently going longer each night between his dream feed and his first waking.

KnitterInTheNW · 20/10/2008 11:46

I'm struggling to get him to go to sleep for those 2 naps. if I introduced another nap I'd spend the entire day just trying to get him to go to sleep!

SalLikesCoffee · 20/10/2008 11:49

I read a thread on here once (will try and search for it now) where someone had the problem of an overtired baby who refused to do daytime naps, and I think I remember the advice was to try and persuade baby to sleep more, even if that means rocking in your arms for the whole 45 minutes, and for that woman anyway it seemed to help, and after a while the baby was ok enough to go for naps him/herself. And just think the arm muscles you'll end up with

Then again, apparently some babies just don't need much sleep, and you can stand on your head, it won't change anything.

I'll search for that other one, but take it for what it is - someone else's history, and probably not applicable to you at all.

VictorianSqualorSquelchNSquirm · 20/10/2008 11:50

I know, it's what it was like with us for the first while, I had to keep him really active for about two and a half hours then shower him for a good 15 minutes to tire him out even more, then feed him a massive feed til he fell asleep (how they get to sleep if you're starting the routine isn't a problem apparently) then once I had daytime naps sorted I started the PUPD in the evening.
I was really surprised this morning because he usually gets up at about 7:30 and then I put him down for a nap at about 9:30/10 after a feed when I'm back from the school run (I don't feed him when he gets up now or he won't take a full feed so I feed him before a nap rather than after) but today I woke him up at 8:30 and he went straight down at 9:45! He must be getting used to times etc.

SalLikesCoffee · 20/10/2008 11:50

R was like that at the start though - refused to do daytime naps. Drove me nuts!

SalLikesCoffee · 20/10/2008 12:03

No sorry, can't find that exact one, I remember liking it at the time. If you search for "naps" something there might be of value. Good luck!

SalLikesCoffee · 20/10/2008 12:59

hellooooo???

KnitterInTheNW · 20/10/2008 13:08

Hi Sal!

Just got dressed. George is asleep. We had a particularly bad night last night, between George being awake because of his stuffy nose (he can't suck his dummy and breathe at the same time!), DH snoring and a bizarre patch of ezcema on the sole of my foot, I didn't get to sleep til just gone 5am. I gave G some calpol night just before that, we both woke up at 9:45 this morning. We were meant to be going to songs & signs this morning, but I decided that sleep was more important.

I shouldn't be here, we have a house viewing at 3:45 tomorrow afternoon and I should be sorting the house out! I seriously can't be bothered though.

SalLikesCoffee · 20/10/2008 13:16

Bloody hell Knitter! Good luck! I wouldn't have bothered with cleaning just yet either.

VictorianSqualorSquelchNSquirm · 20/10/2008 13:17

Just spoke to DP's Dad he says they are considering dialysis but if her heart fails they won't rescus her.
FUCK.

KnitterInTheNW · 20/10/2008 13:18

I've been doing it all weekend too, DH is ill too (no more than the rest of us but of course he thinks he is) and I'm utterly bored of it all now. I've brought the laptop into the kitchen so you can keep me company while I do some!

KnitterInTheNW · 20/10/2008 13:20

What horrible news for you, VS.

I have evrything crossed that he's being over dramatic x

thatsnotmymonster · 20/10/2008 13:24

I am doing a dummy-free day today cos Robyn wakes up in the night for her dummy. So far she has settled for both her naps and gone off to sleep after about 5 mins of crying. I am hoping that she will just have one feed at night at about 11pm (she does anyway but I have to go through several more times to replace dummy). I am really tired and grumpy during the day so I need to get it sorted. Her daytime naps are getting better, 1-2 hours. She normally has one at about 9am and one at about 1pm. Sometimes she has a small nap at about 4.30pm. She always goes to sleep straight away at 7pm.

thatsnotmymonster · 20/10/2008 13:26

VS- that's awful . Hope it's not as bad as it seems x

SalLikesCoffee · 20/10/2008 13:39

Oh VS. Hope he's wrong.

The other side of your babies waking up for their dummies - R seems to have gone off his. He'll only suck it for a minute or two if he's really really sleepy, else he tries chewing it anyway, then it falls out and then he's annoyed! I've now started giving him his teether (a soft one that won't give him a concussion if he hits himself on the head ) if he's not asleep yet and it seems to help.

Would substituting dummies with something else (muslin perhaps) during the day help? Maybe eventually a smaller wash cloth type thing that's safer at night? (Grasping at straws here - with us a random wild guess is normally what helps anyway!)

VictorianSqualorSquelchNSquirm · 20/10/2008 13:42

A won't take a dummy, he only uses it to chew on when awake

FWIW, I did cold turkey with both of my other two with their dummy but they didn't get one until they were about 6 months and had them through til about 2.

KnitterInTheNW · 20/10/2008 13:44

I've been trying to give the dummy to G less and less, but when he's tired/poorly it's really the only thing that calms him down. I think I'll see if it's a problem after I've tackled the sleeping, when he's better.
