Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
LadyBee · 25/08/2008 13:00

oh crap, have just received news of a big earthquake back in NZ. Hope everyone's ok.

scorpio1 · 25/08/2008 13:01

oh goodness!

When that plane crash happened, i rang the helpline hting as my sis is an air hostess but she wasnt on that flight, thank god.

Dont worry if phone is busy.

LadyBee · 25/08/2008 13:32

mmm, phones down where DP's mum lives, which is 10km away from where quake was - 5.9 on richter scale, but she's texted to say she's ok.
My family all elsewhere, thank goodness.

Right..off to get ingredients for chocolate ganache. Have never made it before, but seems simple enough, if completely calorific (chocolate and cream heated and mixed!)

I've got big aches again..even my fingers hurt. Back, knees, hips, shoulders, wrists and fingers. I feel like an old lady

SalLikesCoffee · 25/08/2008 13:43

Oh phew LadyBee, so glad to hear your family's ok! Same with your sis, Scorpio!

Ladybee, your banana cake sounds lovely!!! (Hmm, and the icing good enough to eat all on it's own...)

MommyHasaHeadache, if you're reading this - I meant to say the other day: I got all nervous reading your pregnancy test post, hahaha. Had to have a glass of wine after that suspense! How would you have felt if positive? I found the time when I tested so strange - first I thought "oh shit!" when I convinced myself I was, and then actually disappointed when not. But then, I am a nutcase.

LadyBee · 25/08/2008 13:58

am now feeling confused, DP has just said lemon icing more usual for a banana cake, but surely chocolate and banana would be better combination?
Bugger it, am not going back to shop for more ingredients, chocolate it is going to be. Possibly with coconut sprinkled on top - feel like I should be wearing a flowery pinny with all this domesticity.

Yes, MommyHAH I also did a bit of a doubletake reading your post, was convinced we were going to have another two under 18 monther.
My periods still haven't come back yet at all, although this weekend my acheyness did extend a bit to feeling a bit crampy, nothing has eventuated.
Am not sure if I'm brave enough to click on the mooncup link. Do I really want to know?

scorpio1 · 25/08/2008 14:01

my period is AWOL, too. i had one 10 weeks ago, nothing since. Think the waking in the night held it off; expecting one soon now she has been sleeping through last 2 weeks. (or to be pg, lol)

Choc & banana, deffo.

my dh is working today.

PortAndLemon · 25/08/2008 14:10

My local cafe does chocolate ganache on banana cake and it's yummy. Can't see lemon working so well, really. If your DH doesn't like choc/banana then you can eat it all...

SalLikesCoffee · 25/08/2008 14:16

I think choc would work really well, or something cream cheese-y. I'm drooling as we speak.

scorpio1 · 25/08/2008 14:20

[not eating cake emoticon]

SalLikesCoffee · 25/08/2008 14:33

[diet a miserable failure emoticon]

scorpio1 · 25/08/2008 14:34

i would love some cake actually. have none in the house though.

MommyHasaHeadache · 25/08/2008 17:20

Afternoon all... how different our August bank holiday is now we have a baba! Different in a good way though! Not been up to much this weekend - just did a massive tidy up and clear out of our lounge - it really needed doing - we have done nothing bar the odd dust and vacum since Gigi was born Things are looking good again - now to keep it that way! I wish I was more intrested in things like that (cleaning, etc) but I'm not, it is just SOOOO boring to me!

The cake sounds good LadyBee, and I agree, def the chocolate ganache. I've been baking loads since before Gigi was born (I think it was my form of nesting - much more fun than cleaning) and my fav cake was a really yummy and moist chocolate cake, with chocolate ganache and flake sprinkles - delish! However as my butt is growing wider by the day, the time has come to put my cake books and tins away

Sal - it was a bittersweet feeling finding out that I wasn't. In one instance we were both so excited that I might be again, but then in the other, the realities of having no. 2 so close to no.1 are a bit too much for us. However, if I had been, we would have just had to deal with it. BTW - you are so lucky that you have someone close by that you can rely on to babysit. The only person that has babysat Gigi so far is my mom, but she doesn't live close by and is a carer, so is always somewhere around the UK helping some old person. So it has to be carefully planned to fit in with her schedule. I guess I shouldn't really moan - it is better than nothing hey. I would like to try sitters.co.uk, but the whole anxiety leaving baby with a stranger thing kicks in - would I really be able to enjoy myself?

VS - thanks for posting about your book and your summarised version - I think that will be very useful in the years to come. How is it working for you?

PAL - hope your DS is okay now?

I'm kind of convinced by the Mooncup - I have also read 101 things about it, I suppose it is change to what I am used to and have used for the last too many years to bear thinking about. Honestly - is it comfortable? Can you feel it in you?

DonDons · 25/08/2008 19:27

I am also considering jumping on mooncup bandwagon, thought about it a few months ago but never got the courage up to order one. I decided to wait until I got my period back but it is still strangely absent - and Amelie has been sleeping through the night for about 13 weeks. I am totally certain that I am not pregnant though.

VS - your book sounds very good - I have copied your extracts out!

SalLikesCoffee · 25/08/2008 19:42

MommyHasaHeadache - yep, Mooncup is surprisingly comfortable. First use I was sure I felt it (must have been my imagination), but then I used a tampon because the idea of it all (trying not to go into too much detail here...) freaked me out a bit, and I could actually feel that a lot more. So I switched back, and now forget about it most of the time (when not thinking, that is). I quite like the idea of not having to faff around on airplanes and stuff trying to stuff a tampon in my pocket etc when not wanting to carry my whole handbag to the ladies etc. I bought mine at boots - actually went to buy Lilletts, and this was next to it, so I thought what the hell, I've read about it so often, might as well try. And at just under £20 it's not that long before it's paid for itself anyway.

On the babysitters - why don't you try them one day when you're actually close by (e.g. going to a local restaurant or something, somewhere where you can be home in 10 minutes). With sitters I think they try and offer you the same person if you liked them before, and that way you can build up a good relationship with someone? Hmm, this does sound as if I want to get "rid" of Roelof on a regular basis, and that's not the case, but it is nice to know that there is someone if you need to or want to do something that's too late for the babies. I haven't used them, but when I first started looking I thought they looked pretty impressive, and all the reviews (there was quite a lot on MN when I looked) were all good. Since lots of the sitters are quilified nannies etc, I guess you can state that as a requirement from the start?
Btw, first time I went out when G (cleaning lady) looked after Roelof, I only relaxed for about 5 minutes. But boy, were they great! And then, when I saw him perfectly fine, sleeping, her in perfect charge, it got easier, so the next time I relaxed a little more, and now I'm fine.

Our SA flights are booked!!! Whooo hoooo!!!!! I'm flying out two weeks before dh, and then he'll join us from mid Nov. I can't believe I'll be in SA for a whole month!!! Would be nice to see the family and have some winter sun though. I do worry a little about this plan of mine - my first ever flight on my own with R will be 11 hours, followed by a 1 hour connecting flight, followed by my dad picking us up and another 4 hours drive home... I'm crazy, aren't I? [very nervous face] But it costs so much that I decided to do a proper visit now, not sure when we'll go again.

EllieG · 25/08/2008 19:43

Gosh, so many messages. Not sure have energy to read all but have seen gist and feel very inadequate at all the good parenting and cake-making

I have read How to talk but am a miserable failure at putting it into practice in real life, where I nag like a fish wife and tell DSD to go upstairs when she's being naughty 'just cos you're being annoying' [bad bad mummy]

Though I have been trying to be a bit better recently and have more patience etc, which is probably making her behaviour better. A bit. Today she had a Big Sulk over the fact that she couldn't sit in between DH and me on the sofa as there wasn't room, but she wanted to sit in the middle. And I didn't blow up, but explained that I did not want to be all squashed, it had no reflection on her importance to us and suggested that perhaps sulking was not the most mature response, and then Ignored. And ignoring worked cos she got bored and did something else. Hurray for me. Am learning to be better mummy see?

Molly has rolled a bit. I put her on her tummy and because she doesn't like it she rolls back. Not sure that counts though.

Just read your posts about bad dreams sal - are you OK? Can you get a night off feeds and get your DH to do them? Sleep in spare room for a night to catch up?

Mol slept through again last night! But only cos she went to be late as she wouldn't go to sleep early, so am not sure that counts either.

Anyway, sorry to ramble on.

Where is knitter these days? Has anyone seen her?

PortAndLemon · 25/08/2008 19:44

I think if you can feel your Mooncup you generally haven't got it positioned high enough.

SalLikesCoffee · 25/08/2008 19:46

Btw, I don't know anyone else that's that grossed out about periods as I am - I know it's normal and natural and all that, but still. So for me to be impressed enough to shout from the rooftops says something about it. However, it is not the prettiest thing in the world. Then again, not sure if sparkly stars and flashing lights would have been appropriate

scorpio1 · 25/08/2008 19:47

i am yet to be converted to a mooncup.

LOL Ellie at the annoying thing. Good on your explanation though

soz am bfing

SalLikesCoffee · 25/08/2008 19:54

Ellie, thanks for asking, all's back to normal now, I don't know what it was. When I just got home from hospital with Roelof I cried in my sleep for about a week too, but then I actually woke up sobbing. At least this was only in my dreams. I think I get a little bit "depressed in denial" sometimes. You might be right about tiredness too though, because I struggled sleeping a bit, but the sleeping during the day (which I can't normally do) helped loads.
Molly sleeping though - hurray! Whatever the reason, a sleep through is a sleep through! and

scorpio1 · 25/08/2008 19:56

Sal - when im exhausted i dream vert strange things. i slept walked when mimi was having a growth spurt

SalLikesCoffee · 25/08/2008 20:24

That's a relief, Scorpio! (Not that you're having strange dreams of course, but that at least it's not only me, and I am relatively sure that you're sane - not 100% sure about myself lately!)

PortAndLemon · 25/08/2008 21:02

The Keeper used to come in a little spangly bag covered in stars (no flashing lights though)...

That counts as rolling, Ellie!

I think Knitter has been on holiday -- at least, she's just uploaded some "First family holiday" photos on Facebook.

VictorianSqualor · 25/08/2008 21:08

DP talks swedish in his sleep when v. tired or stressed. He did it the other night, woke me up chatting away in some weird language and when I told him the next day the only word I could remember apparently meant 'Polish' as in to polish not from Poland. maybe he was telling em to clean up?

OP posts:
SalLikesCoffee · 25/08/2008 21:10

lol PAL. Oh, how the standards have fallen!

VictorianSqualor · 25/08/2008 21:10

PAL, has there been any activity on ThePFJ's facebook?
I do worry something rotten about little Jack.
