Thought I'd start a new thread before we ran out of space! Couldn't remember the exact name suggestion so have paraphrased, the sentiment is still the same though...

OP posts:

My goodness Debs. Isn't Ethan like you eldest? Uncanny!

ampster · 10/08/2008 23:49

Thanks for the welcome, libralady. Have added myself to the list.

Hi debinaustria. Glad to see I'm not the only ex-pat on here! I post on a board especially for English speaking mums in Sweden, but it's not as busy as this one, so I keep coming back here!

Anyone else developed an interest in videoing their baby? I never thought it would happen to me, but it's become something of an obsession. I've even started putting them to music, check my latest attempt here if you're bored. You can tell he's my first - I'd never have time for such nonsense if I had two.

aberdeenhiker · 11/08/2008 07:39

morning everyone!

I wont bother updating the list to say where I live since it's so obvious

I'm feeling good this morning despite being up for an hour as Fraser snuggled into bed with us in the night (he will not sleep on his own!) and repeatedly punched me. He's finding his hands and I'm not sure I'm thrilled.

DH is going away offshore for a couple nights and it's my first nights on my own with both boys. The logistics of bedtime are scaring me but it can't be worse than days right?

ampster, Paro and Ernest (who hasn't been around much lately) are expats too plus there's a few of us who've moved to the UK from elsewhere (Vancouver in my case) so there's a large group of us well aware of what it's like to live far away from family and old friends.

Amberc · 11/08/2008 08:30

TJuice - oh your baby is seriously cute!!!!!
Greenfairy - lovely smily pic too!
mamawhizz - Ptolemy (after the Egyptian Astronomer?)- won't be any more of them in his class I bet - what made you choose such an unusual name?
Ampster - your video is fantastic!!!! Very creative I must say...

Luke has to have his first jabs today - I am dreading it.

bitofadramaqueen · 11/08/2008 08:46

Amberc hope Luke's jabs go ok. We have the same moses basket I think!

Deb - hope your keyboard is ok! It made me laugh when I read your post as the other day I was complaining to DH that by 7pm I'd only had a bowl of cornflakes for brekkie and 2 slices of toast for lunch. So for the whole day I'd only eaten what I'd normally have before going to work . Re: little and often though, having a handful of seeds or dried apricots or something every now and again between meals might help over the next day or two until you get rehydrated and shake the headache. I'm quite prone to dehydrated related headaches so I know what a PITA they are. Oh, and without stating the obvious steer clear of caffeine for a couple of days.

Who was apologising for complaining too much? I went through a spell of constantly moaning about S's colic/sleep so feel free to complain away. He's just settled himself in his moses basket - bliss.

Started on his reusable nappies today. He looks so bulky . Determined to persevere though as we spent small fortune on the nappies! Worried that a lot of the clothes people have bought him may not fit now though... Ordered some clothes from the cut4cloth/frugi website yesterday as they have a sale on and got some good bargains. V expensive full price though!

bitofadramaqueen · 11/08/2008 08:49

ampster love the video! Did you record it on your camera or on a camcorder? We've got a camcorder but am missing the video editing card in my pc so cant upload. Which means we haven't actually used the camcorder in months. Loving the idea of setting videos to music etc - how did you speed up/add music?

libralady · 11/08/2008 08:53

ampster great video. With DS1 I didn't bother videoing him at an early stage as I thought it's not worth it as he doesn't do anything. Now I bitterly regret it. We've loads of photos of him but from pictures I couldn't get a true visulaisation of his size and when Luke was born I just couldn't remember DS1 being that small iyswim. This time I have taken some video of Luke on his own and with his brother.

libralady · 11/08/2008 08:57

amberc Hope your Luke's jabs go OK. We've got ours in 2 weeks (when he's 9 weeks) and I'm not looking forwad to them either, but at the end of the day it is far better to have them innoculated that not.

I'm just trying to decide what to do today with the boys. I think today is the only day of this week we have no rain forecast so it seems a shame to spend it in the house when we'll probably be doing lots of that later in the week.

Have just watched the diving with the young British lad Tom Daley. He seemed so unphased. OK he didn't get a medal but the world is his oyster at London 2012.

Right I'd better get dressed.

spongebrainbigpants · 11/08/2008 09:10

Hi guys, thanks for setting up the new thread PP.

I love all the new baby photos - Amber, Luke looks so cute in his Moses basket! And what a gorgeous smile.

Deb, your boys are beautiful!

Amber, Alexander has his jabs tomorrow and I'm also not looking forward to it. Dh is coming with me for moral support cos I'm so bad with needles and I don't want to freak out and upset the poor little lad .

ampster, the video is fab! I've been taking quite alot of video footage of Alex (we bought a camcorder solely for the purpose of recording him - dh is not allowed to video me!!), but we've done nothing with it. I've never edited video stuff before - and certainly haven't tried putting it to music. Is it fairly easy to do?

Have added some new photos too - the one of him in his 'perfect' babygro is now up in the corridor of our IVF clinic to celebrate his birth. V proud mum .

Amberc · 11/08/2008 09:32

Libra lady - must sound like a perv but no 14 year old should have a body like that 14 year old diver!! Bet all the girls at school fancy him!

PiggyPenguin · 11/08/2008 09:57

OOh, a new thread. Is everyone else loving the Olympics? I not that big of a sports fan normally but so far seem to have watched a bit of everything - I did miss the diving though as having a lie- in.

Thankfully my blocked duct is much better so I am not going to need antibiotics. I spent all day yesterday trying to unblock it and getting J to feed in awkward positions and it seems to have worked. It's not totally clear but hopefully that will work itself out today. TGF - glad to hear you managed to make yours better too.

Parofleurmapu · 11/08/2008 09:57

Amber, lol at your comments on the young diver!

Reminds me of when I told a friend I thought Daniel Radcliffe was cute, until she pointed out to me he was only 16 at the time!

Upsidedowncake · 11/08/2008 10:23

Hi everyone

Welcome Ampster, I love your video. That's fantastic. Jeremiah looks gorgeous.

Hi Mammwhiz, where are you in SW London? I'm in Wandsworth - Southfields.

Sybil, really glad you've managed to clear your blocked duct. Also Green fairy.

Has anyone tried breast compressions? Would be good to know it's not just my imagination!

Dorothy is a bit unsettled today - am trying to find a pattern. Have found one thing - The vomiting was definitely worsened by tomatoes - so have cut them out and she is sick much less, but the reflux hasn't gone away completely. Tomatoes are a bit of a bugger to cut out as they are in so much, but it was a revelation when I stopped them.

Your pics are all lovely! I can't wait until A smiles

greenfairy glad you had a good day out with the girls, sounds fun, and must have been good to feel human again!

dramaqueen sympathies re. the 2 hr screaming session. A had also improved over the past week but yesterday the screaming returned. He was inconsolable most of the evening. Then I realised I'd had curry on Sat eve and chilli yesterday evening, so that is probably to blame - oops! And UDC I didn't know that about tomatoes, but I might also try cutting these out if it helps

bitofadramaqueen · 11/08/2008 11:33

Sponge cute pics!

allnew thanks - still to send you invite to S's blog but not yet had time to catch up on emails. Sorry to hear that A's screaming returned.

Who's using reusable nappies already and how are you getting on with them? Day 1 for S, and OMG does he scream when his nappy is wet!!! Dont know how I'll ever be able to try some 'cry it out' techniques as now when he cries and I know he's not hungry I have to pick him up to see if he has any wind to release (he's very good at saving burps for later) and then check if nappy wet. Someone tell me I will learn to love my cloth nappies?!?!?!? He'll be in disposables at night for a while yet!

Right, he's crying so I best go check him out. Wave to everyone I didn't get chance to chat back to.

ampster · 11/08/2008 11:57

Hi upsidedowncake, thanks! What are breast compressions?

Paro, what?s your blog? Would love to take a look.

Lol@amberc - now I have a reason to watch the Olympics!

Libralady, I?m so glad I started videoing him as I think I even captured his first hint of a smile in one video. He?s kind of hypnotised by the orange light on the camera so he gazes right into it!

Bitofadramaqueen, I?m just using my digital camera - canon ixus 700. I have a handycam but I don?t know how to use it. I used my Mac?s video editing program, iMovie, to speed up and add music / credits.

Spongebrain, it?s fairly easy to add music etc to videos but it?s not a total walk in the park - I had to study the help files / tutorials and suss out how to do it. It?s quite fiddly as you have to chop bits out and add them in and whatever, but it?s really satisfying.

Aberdeenhiker, I?m glad there are a few other ex-pats on here. I love lots of things about Stockholm, especially the attitude towards kids, which is sadly lacking in London, but I miss home so much! Am back in London for August and really enjoying it so far, despite scary knife crime horror mongering in papers etc...

Upsidedowncake · 11/08/2008 12:33

Hi there

Jack Newman guy www.bflrc.com/newman/breastfeeding/compres2.htm is the breast compression guy. It's a way of regularising your milk flow - and my DD seems to feed twice as fast because if it. There are videos on Jack Newman's site of people doing breast compressions. Would be interested to know if any of you try it and it works!

Upsidedowncake · 11/08/2008 12:44

Sorry here's the link

ampster · 11/08/2008 12:58

That's interesting - they showed us that in the hospital and I've been doing that automatically with the right boob, because he used to not latch so well on the right side. But I never did it on the left side, and that's the side I have had blocked ducts on, three times now. Will give it a go on left side also and see if things improve.

poppy34 · 11/08/2008 14:51

tgf will have to check out that ad....also agree that hungry baby milk a god send at night..switched edie to it a week ago and defnitely had more consistent nights since then (Going through til 6am sometimes or 4/5 which isnt too bad)....boobs ok which is just as well as latest lab report from milk lake shows some abnormal cells in the milk (due to swelling/sitting there too long) so proves I did do right to pack it in.

looking at female weightlifting at olympics..SCARY

mamawizz · 11/08/2008 15:20

UDC - I'm in New Malden, not far from you. I have been in contact with PP by email, so hope we will meet up sometime soon, maybe in Wimbledon.

Amberc - I'd never dream of using Ptolemy as a first name (too cruel), but I think you can have a bit more fun with middle names. I studied Classics at uni, and my husband is really into ancient history, so we had to have classical middle names (Theo's is Lysander, which some people think is after Shakespeare, but is actually after the 5th century BC Spartan general). I had to persuade DH that we couldn't have Spartacus as a first name...

Caspar has got his 8 week jabs tomorrow (at 10 weeks, since we've been away in Devon for 2 weeks), and 8 week check. Looking forward to the weighing etc, but no, not to the injections, poor little thing.

josey · 11/08/2008 15:23

hi guys been a bit down in the dumps just now there is so much i just cant get my head round. Ive been crying and praying for a mirical, sometimes I want there to be a mistake and she isnt my baby my real one will turn up...im such an awful mother.

Can I ask where some of your lo's are with things? Olivia is able to get up on her elbows when on her stomack and if she is lying on her tummy with one arm under her she can roll onto her back....to me mother of 3 this is all early and obviously a huge thing for a baby they said would never move!!!

She cant find her mouth with her hands though is trying you can see her fighting against the signal block(so to speak) and her vision doesnt seem to be coming, her pupils have started to dialate but she doesnt seem to follow, and after the initial smile, no response apart from a slight twitch in the corner of her mouth.

She didnt cry when she got her 1st set of needles but did cry during the night it was the longest we have had her cry for but no more ho hum.

She is starting to feed orally with a heberman bottle, only 1 or 2 feeds a day and about an oz at a time.

Im really worried as I have to go and get her EEG results on my own tomorrow, on screan there was a huge improvement but im dreading what they will tell me.

ANYWAY enough of my moaning......some of you kindly asked about dontating to my dhs jump....the website has just been sent to us.
