Hi all

No time for a real catch up (sorry!), all a bit frantic here at the moment!

Tamara and I have still got our stinky colds and now ds has it too...boo!! Of course we still haven't been to the GP - to be honest, I never really see the point of going unless something is massively wrong, and I don't think it is...(my sister is just finishing up her GP training and was over on sunday...I think if she had though either of them needed to see a doctor she would probably have told me...)

Can I ask if anyone knows when you're 'supposed' to introduce protein? All I can remember is that you're not supposed to give them milk at the same time...

Off to Devon next week - going to take the opportunity to stop sterilising !

Love to all xx

Amani · 15/07/2008 16:00

oh, I hate pureeing too, but like MM really don't want to give jar/powder stuuf....

justkeepswimming · 15/07/2008 16:17

that stuff that gingeme & the other stuff that filly use (sorry sieve brain) are probably good alternatives to home purees tho?
Though i can totally understand where you're coming from mixedm - sometimes i think babies don't just bring love, they bring a whole bucketful of guilt too, it's just up to each of us how we allocate it!

hooray, dh is coming home early today
wasn't due home till thurs late, after leaving on mon, so i was psyched up for 4 long days on my own. he's going to get ds1 from nursery, and will be here for the dawncrack morning wake ups, yey.

ds1 i think has abandoned any pretence at daytime naps, boo hiss, tho he\ll still play in his room which is fine. he slept 7-7.20 last night, wow!
ds2 not as good but still ok, 7-3 (feed)-6. if he would just drop that one feed.....he's not even hungry when he wakes up at 6ish so think he should be able to make it through.

filly - boo about the colds, think we are coming down with stuff here too, all ds1 wanted to do this morning was go back to bed, i cruelly made him go to nursery for his sports day he only ran one race, and when i say ran, well he went off in the opposite direction to try and play with the basketball hoop in the park

ah well, athletic greatness still to show itself....

right, i know i've missed stuff, bumbo = fab. get the one with the little table if you can great for eating and for putting toys on while you do the ironing.
if they have the bumbo on the table (yes i know you're not meant to but...) they only drop food as far as the table rather than straight to the filthy floor.

yes blw here, ds2 really get to grips with the idea, loves kiwi, banana, pear, carrot, some savoury flapjack things, etc. some going through into nappies too.

ok, off to tidy up before dh and ds1 get back, ds2 just stirring too i think - a lovely 2 hr nap! i even managed an hour

fillybuster · 15/07/2008 18:12

oh gosh, I wasnt going to post now cos I'm in the middle of dinner/bedtime stuff but...

bumbo = fab. of course we stick it on the table, easiest way to feed the lo. But we're vaguely careful about keeping an eye on her as she tries to bounce out of it

puree = yup, I'm with MM on the guilt/liking to make my own, for much the same reasons, actually! its why i'm so anal about what bought stuff I'll use when I don't have time to cook ! I actually quite like the pureeing, just don't always have enough time to plan a big enough range of options for madam!!!

Um...

Hugs to JKS...you will sleep again, one day! I'm looking forward to waking my kids at 8/9am on school hols when they're teenagers with the words "I don't want you to get into the wrong sleep patterns" as my mother did to me. At the time it was hugely annoying; now, I realise it was revenge!!!!

xxx

justkeepswimming · 15/07/2008 19:31

lol filly - will def be going into ds1 at some point in his teenage years and shouting 'uptime' at him

barristermum - see from FB that you have been in hosp? are you ok???

righto, off for glass of lovely red wine and ear plugs to ignore that fact that ds1 (who of course napped at nursery, grr) is still awake.....

fillybuster · 15/07/2008 19:37

Just managed to get 2 kids fed, washed and into bed with no meltdowns whilst simultaneously cooking 2 batches of puree (carrot, parsnip and apple in one pan; tomato, broccoli and courgette in the other) and not burning any. Children now in bed, puree in little pots in freezer.

Me? Well I'm covered with Tamara's dinner and spatters from the handblender and am deeply frazzled but wearing [smug emoticon] and ready for a large G&T in the garden !

simpson · 15/07/2008 19:52

Well done guys on all the pureeing, a drink is definately in order!!

Filly - when you cook tomato puree do you skin them & deseed? How is the best way to do it? I remember making a terrible mess with DS's tomato purees and vowing not to do it again!!Don't know anything about introducing protein, would assume 6 mths. Didn't know to avoid milk at same time, How pants am I!!

JKS - Do you mean the ella's kitchen stuff? Have bought a few and some hipp organic jars for holiday. Am not pureeing while we are away. LOL at a sports day, I have all that to come!!

lilyloo · 15/07/2008 20:06

Simpson i deskin as that doesn't blen but don't bother deseeding would take agaes i imagine.
I have loads of sweet potato and tomato and melon, pear and banana ! DD just had potato and green bean and loved it.
I have already tried a little chicken didn't know about the milk thing either why's that ?
I also have a few bananas over ripening so she having good fun with those!
Am thinking of getting veggie box delivered to make more adventurous purees anyone had one any good ?

JKS hope you get a lie in

Glad to hear we're mostly having fun weaning.

I am being quite conservative with DS's food - he is one of the youngest here and I also don't want to introduce meat or gluten til he is 6 months just cos his weight gain is phenomenal enough as it is. He has homemade fruit and veg purees but if we are out and about at lunchtime I have given him those Frutapura things. Had been on the lookout for the Ellas Kitchen things but they have only just appeared in the supermarkets up here!

Lily I had a veg box for a while - the veg were noticeably tastier but the big pain was scrubbing the soil off them as they were literally straight from the farm. I also did my own veg plot but ignored it last year when preggers and this year it's just a wilderness. Dead easy to grow stuff like herbs, spinach and salad leaves though - I grow them in pots in the yard.

Did you get to the footie Simpson?

Good to hear from you Naetha.

Hope you had a good break Lucky!

Still BF ladies you are great. Am going to go to my BF group this week and say my goodbyes.

Am scared to stop sterilising in Bulgaria not sure about the water quality! We're not on mains drainiage at our house there - it's just a soakaway, meaning the villagers' veggies are grown over everyone's sewerage. . i guess I'll have to do Milton tablets though as no microwave.

Filly re waking teenagers. I recall my dad used to get us up for school by singing "Morning has Broken" loudly through the bedroom door.

hello to everyone else. Anyone else filled with horror at having to go back to work. I go back 1 Oct and will be doing a 50 50 job share so not too painful i guess.

simpson · 15/07/2008 21:06

Angechica - those frutapura things are fab!! My DS (nearly 3) still has one a day eats it like yogurt. Went to footie, was good fun and we won too dispite the rain. Going to try and get one game this season. My dad has season ticket at Portman Rd so would go with him.He is all happy as apparently we won in a friendly in Ireland 7.0 last night!!

Gave DD baby rice today and will do the same tomorrow and then might try and mix it with a cube of carrot on thursday. See how she goes I guess...

lilyloo · 15/07/2008 21:31

Ange try not to think about work yet maybe Sept 30th I am hoping to take the extra unpaid leave so will be Jan for me but still don't want to go back yet!
Are you stopping bf now ? Well done on getting so far i now have new bf comments to deal with as i am thinking of doing extended bf at least until 12 mths when i go back to work but have had load of great comments on this thread for anyone thinking of doing same !

OP posts:
AngeChica · 15/07/2008 21:50

Yes have stopped BF a couple of weeks ago as by the end was only feeding at night and then he started sleeping through so I didn't need to! (sorry )

I saw that thread Lily. I would have had a lot of support from my BF peer supporters' group if wanted to carry on but not from family (mum: "But bottlefed babies are more contented"...blah blah) TBH most of my friends (School and uni) managed to BF longer than me, but on the other hand quite a lot of the other mums I have gotten to know around the village do things that would make the hardcore Mumsnet brigade squeal (e.g. solids / cereal in bottle from 12 weeks etc. Eek!)

lilyloo · 15/07/2008 21:56

Ange hope that apology wasn't for me
Whatever and each to their own i think maybe i know this is my last so hoping to enjoy her being a baby for as long as i can whilst she is too!
Am of stopping night feeds we still on at least two here!

Don't think i could ever tow the mumsnet line tbh (except here) it's called selective posting

OP posts:
simpson · 15/07/2008 22:24

Lilyloo - DD has now decided she wants 2 night feeds too!! Have had a while of her going through so I am lucky in that respect. But am bloody knackered and hoping babyrice makes a difference!! (Hopeful emotion!)

fillybuster · 15/07/2008 22:37

I de-skin (usually after cooking, just fish them out) but don't deseed

Night all

Kelix · 15/07/2008 23:05

Hi everyone. Hope you are all well.
Back to work - I dont think I'm going to go back I cant really afford not to but DP is being very supportive and convinced me that we will manage finacially so think Im going to be a SAHM for a while
Pureeing - Am hopeless at it (just like cooking lol) Can do breakfasty things like baby rice with banana/apple and simple things like potato with carrot but I scared of the more adventurous stuff Hipp jars seem to go down well when I'm unprepared tho
Sleeping - Fingers crossed tonight is beter than last when DD decided that waking up evry 20 minutes was a good idea!! First night I really didnt get any sleep, she has been fine upto now tho tonight so fingers crossed.
Bumbo/bebepod - Still loving it, my DD looks so grown up in hers, even took her into the garden in it today - she spent most of the time eyeing up the wheelie bin and offering her sock to the drain pipe thingy lol! She seemed to enjoy it tho.
Follow on milk - I have made the move, no change what so ever. DD still drinks the same amount no side effects, dont even think she noticed the difference.
My b-day on Monday so having people round on Sat night, beers food etc. Anyone have a good recipe for lancashire hotpot? (preferably made with beef, so not really traditional)
Bye for now

simpson · 15/07/2008 23:16

Kelix - I am going to be a sahm for a bit too. Am crap at cooking if it wasn't for my microwave I would not have a clue!! Although have been reading MN receipes and have made a good effort the last few wks but still easy stuff tuna bake etc.

How old is your DD? Let me know what bumbo is like as I might buy one for our holiday as we will be in garden/beach etc.

Kelix · 15/07/2008 23:29

Simpson - she is 6 months today!
Bumbo is great, she hasnt even attempted to escape from it yet which is surprising for her. Its really light and you can feed in it, DD plays with toys in it or watches TV. I think it makes her feel grown up having her own chair too. Can def reccomend, think she might try to escape once she can crawl but will probably end up crawling round with it stuck on her thighs lol!
The bebepod (almost exactlty the same as bumbo IMO) the one that I bought is currently on special offer in mothercare BTW (£20 usually £28)

simpson · 15/07/2008 23:59

Kelix - fingers X you get a better night tonight. My DD 24 wks yesterday. She is tiny though and could not manage food to mouth yet. However big event in Simpson household I forgot to mention earlier DD has been trying to roll over for weeks she can go easily get on to side and back!! Small but steady steps!! £20 for bumbo all be it other name sounds worth it to me!! How many solid meals a day does your DD have out of interest?

mixedmama · 16/07/2008 09:25

Morning all,

Not much going on here...

Had my WW meeting last night and by some miracle managed tolose half a pound by stuffing my face with everything I shouldnt all week.

JKS - I think you are spot on about the allocating guilt thing, we all have it just distribute it differently.

Bumbo obv goes on the table in my house... since i feed DS2 in it. Does anyone know if I can buy the table attachment separetely as that would be really useful for me.

I have located the Ellas Kitchen pouches and will be taking some on holiday in for when we are in Istanbul as it isnt clear whetherI will have access to things and if I freeze things they will defrost on the journey so will be no good.

Ange - about the sterilising... you could just boil for 5 mins.

Kelix · 16/07/2008 11:13

Simpson - she has 2 meals a day, a main (puree or Hipp jar) and a pudding (usually fruit, fruitpura thingys go down well or a youghurt - sometimes both if she is particually hungry!) She enjoys finger foods too, baby rice cakes dipped in anything tasty are a particular faveourite. Also she has 2 8oz bottles during the day and just recently a 9oz bottle before bed (obvoiusly she isnt such a little thing anymore!)
Sleep was better last night, still a little restless but slept a lot better
Mixedmama - cant seem to find the trays seperatly although would be handy if they did

Off shopping with my mum now. Need clothes to wear for my birthday get together, my DP said he thinking of asking the local pizza place to put 'happy birthday' onto a pizza for me as I dont like cake lol!! Sounds good

simpson · 16/07/2008 12:57

Kelix - we had a good night here too. DD slept 6.15pm till 6.30am!!Can't beleive that it was the babyrice though, if it was we are in trouble tonight as DD has refused point blank to have any today. I forget what a slow process weaning can be...

Major panic from me, have to get a fancy dress costume for DS by Friday!!! Only got told today has anyone got any ideas of something that is easy??!!

Right off to do some pureeing again, never ending...

lilyloo · 16/07/2008 13:00

afternoon all
Hope you get something nice Kelix !
I hoping to get something for dd's christening in the net sale tom i have an online slot at 7am but will have been up an hour by then so not really an early start just seems early to be shopping
Can't really affor it we are trying to rain in for when my mat pay stops in Oct as we will have to get through xmas with only one wage coming in.
Kelix/Simpson of stopping work think i am going to have to go back and don't really want to.
