How about this?

morning all,

your poor DD2 clara - hope she feels better soon. We have never had any problems on flights with either DC and I think your are the perfect age - DD1 can read/colour etc if she is awake and DD2 will surely just sleep. i think the tricky age is between 1 and 2 when they don;t sleep so much but can;t rally entertain themselve, certainly notseated anyway!

caz10 - my feeding/expressing routine is:
6-7am ish feed
7.30 breakfast, sometimes followed by qucik feed
10.30 express
1pm pick DCs up from nursery, feed DS and go back to work
3.30 express
5pm get home and feed
6pm dinner
7pm bath and feed
10pm - (if I'm being very good) express

Think my routine might be a bit more like yours in terms of frequency of feeds? I am also at homewith him two ornings and just feed whenever he wants which is usually more often than the routine above

It was working great but I think I am going to try to wean him off a couple of feeds now as he is eating so well and I don't really think he needs them...

(Oh and my research is looking at children's reading development by measureing their eye movements while they read)

well done kelbel that is so fantastic!! Please tell me what your sleep training involved. DS is back to 2-3 wakings a night and I am knackered

fifi good luck with the diet, you must have a will of steel to have resisted the chinese takeaway!

skidaddle · 14/07/2008 09:44

meant to say buzzy the best nappies for me are bamboozles (made by totsbots) - you can get them with either velcro or poppers - lovely and soft and really absorbent - the only problem is they take ages to dry, and they do need an outer wrap

somebody come and chat to me please, my head hurts with all this proper work!

cazzybabs · 14/07/2008 09:49

Clareq - hope dd2 is OK.

Caz - I never expressed at work - it didn't affect my supply with the other 2.

claireybee · 14/07/2008 10:37

Hope dd2 is ok Clara, just what you need now isn't it? Sure the flight will be ok...am not too worried about the flight when we go to Botswana-dd always conks out in the car so will probably do the same and ds is usually ok as long as he is being held. Main worries are if ds has one of his screaming sessions which will make everyone on the plane hate me or if dd is overtired and has a tantrum in the airport on arrival while we wait for our transfer.

Back to shit nights here. Spent most of the past week sitting up holding ds all night, he has still not been himself after his tonsilitis so haven't dared try any sleep training.

Caz are you better? Have a sore throat and feel knackered today, think am just tired though(well hopefully i havent caught tonsilitis from ds!). Taking it easy this week after my hectic week last week (Can't remember if I said but my sister eloped in march and my parents hosted a reception type paty for the family on saturday so I was there all last week organising and doing the catering for it).

Kelbel what did you do to get ds to sleep better??? Also BT how have you got down to just 2 wakings? Would be very happy with that!

Suey shame about the phone

Jewels I always end up with odd socks everywhere too.

Buzzy I also love bamboozles though I have to say that although they do stay softer than terry after 2 children they have aged more than my terry ones have-just look quite dingy and tatty. I really like bimbles/bumbles too (can you get those over there?) and they are cheap too. For pockets I like fuzzis-the medium has fitted dd from 3 months old until now (2.1)so can work out quite good value, especially as with pockets you can get away with only having half as many outers and just buy double the inserts. AIO's I like swaddlebees-for some reason the swaddlebees aio is far more reliable on my dc than the swaddlebees pocket. I think motherease nappies are shite-only last about half an hour on ds but their wraps are good. Oh and although nippa napies can seem harder work to begin with she shouldn't discount them on that basis because with a bit of practice using a nippa doesn't take any longer than using velcro and you can get a far better fit with a nippa plus they are less bulky around the middle.

fifisworld · 14/07/2008 10:49

skid - I gave in and had chow mein last night still i've lost 2lb though

Clara - I hope your dd is ok. I'm sure you'll all be fine on the flight. We are going to the Dominican Republic for 2 weeks at end Aug and im dreading it, mainly for ds1 as he never sits still.

Suey about your phone...how is your diet doing?

BT - sorry to hear your having a tough time with feeding

Hello to everyone else

skidaddle · 14/07/2008 11:14

wow clairey - your sister eloped?! how cool - where did she go to get married? Hope the reception was a success after all your hard work

I didn't realise your DS had tonsilitis (knew he had a virus but didnt know what it was) - poor little mite - tonsilitis is horrid - i used to get it twice a year every year as a child and it was awful. Feeling knackered and rundown is usually the first sign for me so i hope you haven't got it too

fifi - lost 2lb and had a nice dinner - can't get better than that! I have also lost quite a bit of weight recently without doing anything. think it must be that magic 6 month thing people talk about when your baby has started having more food and therefore less milk so your body adapts or something... anyway who cares what the reason is I can fit into my size 10 jeans again, yaaaay

oh my goddness I have just re-read my last post and my typing is terrible - you wouldn't think I am writing a PhD thesis, would you

claireybee · 14/07/2008 11:25

I hope so too skid, my sister always had it as a kid and I never progressed further than the sore throat stage so there is hope! Am just a bit run down i think, back on the new mum vitamins for me!

Erm eloped sounds better than it was really...they only went to Henley! They each have a good friend that lives by there so they made plans to go and visit them then told them on the day -"by the way we are getting married this afternoon and you are my witness" kind of thing then called us all and told us afterwards. They had been engaged since xmas but only told us the day before they got married-no mention of the imminent wedding though!

Their official reeption is in September (i'm not organising that one thankfully!) but our side of the family is over 70 people so they thought it best to have a seperate low key version for them, especially as my dad's side of the family are really antisocial and only talk to each other and complain if a party isn't done their way!

My friend just came round and was really worried cos the kids were still in pj's-thought something was wrong! nope, i'm just having a lazy day!

buzzybee · 14/07/2008 12:58

Wow thanks Clairey! Washables are a bit of a minefield aren't they? Seems to depend so much on the individual child. But I guess I shouldn't be surprised after all some people swear by one brand of disposables that the next person hates!

Skidaddle - how interesting! My mum's a bit of a local guru on early childhood education. Just had a second edition of a book called "Thinking Children" published. This is the link to the NZ publisher but its also being published in the UK by Open University Press www.nzcer.org.nz/default.php?cPath=345_130_166&products_id=2216 What's your background in?

Very quiet here tonight without DD1! DD2 aparently did lots of rolling at creche today - I haven't seen her do it yet but

buzzybee · 14/07/2008 13:08

Oh and this is the biggest online local supplier of washables in NZ - see we can get most things here!! www.mumandbubs.co.nz/aio.htm
There are loads of others too (altho have to admit have not seen Bumbles...)

skidaddle · 14/07/2008 14:36

wow buzzy - that looks like a big seller (rather than the obscure academic incomprehensible-to-any-normal-person type books that are so often published by academics) - is your mum an academic or does she work with children or do something else?

My background is experimental psychology so my stuff is all a bit obscure and incomprehensible although I would love to branch out a bit and write for a more general audience like your mum

btw forgot to say - I would say the best wraps are motherease Rikki ones - fit every nappy I have ever had and never leak without being too plasticky and sweaty! Those swaddlebees look great though - one of the few nappies I don't own

clairey - a reception full of 70 unsociable guests - that will be amusing! Even if they only went to henley I still love the idea of eloping

Amani · 14/07/2008 16:05

Hieveryone

claraquitetirednow · 14/07/2008 16:22

hi Amani - I like your minimilist approach - I bet you've got a neat and tidy house too

Well, all the stuff apart from what we're taking on the plane with us has gone, what a relief. Dd2 is better - it's all coming out of her bum rather than her mouth now which is at least slightly more containable (although still several clothes changes all round today). Anyway she's eating, drinking and keeping it down.

I've been madly Freecycling all day, with mixed results. I love it when it goes well but it does my head in when someone seems desperate for something and then you don't hear back from them....

Skid - wow your thesis sounds very interesting, have you reached any conclusions yet?

ooops gotta go another bum explosion....

OP posts:
BouncingTurtle · 14/07/2008 16:43

Hi all!

Claraq - glad to hear dd is feeling better
Amani - hello yourself
Skid - how's the brain now I second what you said about ME rikki wraps, I prefer them for my prefolds over the Bambino Mio ones.
As for the night wakings, ds has been doing that by himself, have done no sleep training. However he woke up 4 times last night, not sure why! It was very tiring for both of us.
Clairey - good for you having a lazy day
Fifi - I decided to relax a bit with regards to solids. He'll eat when he is ready. He did have a bit of lunch, some of my jacket potato and some orange.

claireybee · 14/07/2008 16:55

My throat feels worse now . I think when dh gets home I will hand over children and go to bed...I will probably even allow ds his first bottle of formula because I just want to crash! How selfish of me

Amani I like your short and sweet approach.

Clara do you have either a 2 seater sofa or a small freezer you are getting rid of???

BT I was hoping you were going to give me a magical solution

I wonder how wizzka is geting on...last time she posted was when she had just started a new sleep regime I think

claireybee · 14/07/2008 16:57

Oh and ds has started pulling himself up and is babbling constantly-says bababa mostly and guhguh. My mum swears he said ca on sunday when the cat jumped onto the sofa!

BouncingTurtle · 14/07/2008 17:16

Ds said Mummy - but he was looking at his spoon so I don't think he knows what it means lol.

Nursery has just rang and ds is now got 4 settling in sessions booked. Am feeling very and apprehensive and worried that he will get hungry and miss me too much

Clairey - when I was ill with a migraine, dh tried to get ds to take a bottle but he wouldn't - hope you have more success, and you feel better soon.

suey2 · 14/07/2008 19:25

hello all,
sorry you're sick clairey

BT and clairey- how cool! proper consonants! Clairey your LO is SOO advanced- wasn't he the first to sit and crawl too?

Millie is just trying to pull herself up on everything now. she gets half way up, then CRASH and WAAAAAAH as whatever she is pulling she pulls over.

Caz10 · 14/07/2008 20:19

oooh now I feel better about poor backwards dd, she has been "chatting" for ages ha ha!!

we get bababa, dadada, gagagaga, a sort of funny throaty noise that sounds like she is talking Wookie, num num num when eating...oooh the list is endless she never shuts up!

She'll be still sitting there on her bottom at a year old but talking in sentences ha ha!

clairey it is rotton being ill, I am still worn out from whatever I had and I felt terrible that I couldn't look after dd properly, never mind 2 los like you, hope you feel better

skid that sounds really interesting! On a very basic level, I used to teach yr1 and there were some little ones who just hadn't got the hang of reading, but would "fake it" by memorising their home reading - I could always tell as their eyes didn't "scan" the words in the same way

starving...

Caz10 · 14/07/2008 20:21

rotten even

forgot to say also thanks for all the info re expressing. cazzy did you just not have time to express at school or choose not to? i just can't see how i would fit it in

BouncingTurtle · 14/07/2008 20:46

Ds often sounds like he is talking Chinese

suey2 · 14/07/2008 21:19

cool caz! one of my mates said that they either seem to chatter early or be physical. Millie has no interest: she is still at the shrieking and blowing raspberries stage!

Caz10 · 14/07/2008 21:25

Isn't that bizarre! It's so interesting to watch them develop. I don't know any other babies exactly the same age in RL, so only have you guys to compare notes with. Dd literally never shuts up, she wakes up "talking" and even talks to my boobs between feeds!

fifisworld · 14/07/2008 21:31

Caz PMSL at talking to your boobs between feeds.
We are also at the blowing raspberries and shrieking stage, although we do get a lot of babababa and mmmmmm as well!!!

BouncingTurtle · 15/07/2008 07:13

Ds doesn't talk at the boob but when he is eating he chats away. I'm just wondering when I should start telling him not to talk with his mouth full

buzzybee · 15/07/2008 08:27

Skid - I think she was approached by the Open University Press to do a second edition. I believe its quite a common nominated text for teachers colleges / universities who teach early childhood education.
She has been an academic in a past life, but also spent many years working for (and ultimately heading up) the NZ Council for Education Research, as well as the Ministry of Education. These days she's an independent contractor to the Ministry - and she and I are currently part way through the process of establishing a new childcare centre which we hope to open in October (her chance to put theory into practice - I'm merely the business advisor!)

Caz10 - your DD sounds like mine, very vocal but physically "lazy". I love it when they do that num/yum sound when eating. DD1 still does it when she's really enjoying her food and she's 6! DD2's sound du jour is brrrm brrrm like a motorbike
