Just told Dh but he wants to hang fire

claraquitetirednow · 21/05/2008 21:39

BT and Macdoodle - I have now ordered my Wii - even getting that seemed harder than I realised! Anyway got it from Dixons but struggling with the Fit. Macdoodle - saw the site where you got yours but was a little suspicious of all the questions they were asking - when they started asking for the address of my previous house I stopped!!

Hmmm.Perhaps I am destined not to get fit!

OP posts:
macdoodle · 21/05/2008 21:44

ooh they didn't ask me that?? I think it is just cos its a catalogue with a running account like NEXT etc - I have so many accounts and credit cards I am considered a good credit risk - I'll let you know if it arrives they didn't ask for any financial details etc am my address is in the public domain anyway so didn't get any more than could have goggled ...I hope

macdoodle · 21/05/2008 21:45

or googled even

skidaddle · 22/05/2008 13:17

hello everyone

insy - good to see you back on albeit it briefly - not to be the bearer of bad news but I have heard from many mothers that it actually gets worse when 2nd DC is 9 months because then they can fight back! I've heard it peaks when DC2 is 1 and is fine by the time they're 2 - seems like a VERY long time but I'm sure it will fly by

clairey - i was thinking your DD would be about 2 now - what are you doing for her bday? Did you manage to rewrap the presents before she saw them?

sympathies to all struggling with two.. I am actually finding it OK now but I really suffered the first couple of months so I suppose it just goes in phases which is good to remember but still hard when you're in the middle of a hideous phase, the screeching sounds particularly hard to tolerate

Took DD to the dentist today and she has lots of plaque - feel like such an awful mother but it is really hard to clean them properly. Anyway have made a pact with DH that we will have no treats in the house (e.g. cake, biscuits etc) and he can just have his at work - that way DD will have less sugar (not that she has very much - we don't even let her drink juice, let alone sweets) and I will lose weight that's the theory anyway...

skidaddle · 22/05/2008 13:21

oh and suey, if you're still here, can't remember specific place names in santiago as it was 10 years ago that i lived there but there is a lovely cafe on the plaza de la quintana, and loads of tapas bars in the old part of town (although I suppose you won't be out that late). Also there is a little village just outside santiago (sorry, can't remember the name) which is famous for their tortillas - it is well-known so a local/guide book will tell you what it's called and the tortillas are gorgeous - definitely worth a visit - hope you have a great time

becklespeckle · 22/05/2008 13:52

Hi all! Bit of a rubbish week here for me as due to the construction of new build houses being halted (as none are selling), DH has been made redundant as from tomorrow . Scary stuff although he has been offered some bits and pieces of building work doing improvements and driveways and such so hopefully that will tide us over until he finds something more permanent. Who knows, this could be the kick he needed to go full-time self-employed [desparatley hopeful emoction].

Awen, I am sure you haven't p*ed anyone off, certainly not me! Please stay!

Amani, I would be sat in the corner hugging my Dyson and twitching if there was a trail of crumbs in my house! I'm sure my friends find it highly annoying amusing that I feel the need to hoover up mess as it happens, I even get twitchy in their houses when the children make a mess .

Clara, DD mastered the same wonderful screeching noise a week or so ago! I kept running to check her at first as I thought there was something wrong! She seems bored of it now though and 'sings' in a lower voice a lot and also goes "ha...ha...eee!" I think they love it when they learn something new so they do it over and over and over!

Clairey, DD's gums went paler and a bit squishy just before her tooth cut through and then I could see a dark patch on the gum and feel the sharpness of the tooth where it had just cut through. Now I can see the whole of the top of the tooth, it has taken 2 weeks from first sharpness breaking through to being able to see it. I did notice that some days it seemed to 'push' and trouble her and others not too. She would chew her bottom lip a lot and keep licking her gum too as I guess it felt strange to her.

Also, is anyone thinking of getting Sky? I got it recently and they have sent me some things through for recommending friends. Each friend I recommend will get a Sky+ box and I will get some M&S vouchers!

BouncingTurtle · 22/05/2008 18:01

Put ds to bed 15 mins ago, he has been extremely grumpy, whingy and throwing himself on and off my boobs for a couple of hours, doesn't want to play, doesn't want to have a cuddle with mummy , very unhappy baba!
I'm pretty sure it is his gums giving him bothered, slathered lots of teething gel (cue lots of yuck faces from him!), gave him some calpol (more yuck face then spat most of it out, so God knows how much he has taken!) cuddled some more, then horrible chokey, spluttering and much drool from him, making me panic - I think he is inhaling some of his drool, making him choke. So decided to put him to bed as he seems tired as well. Changed him into his sleepsuit without too much fuss, managed to feed him and he dozed off. Poor little man Put him in sleeping bag and in his cot. Normally he goes to bed around 7pm, but admittedly I've been a bit inconsistant with his bedtimes, has been varying between 6.30 and 8pm this week!
Hope he'll be better tomorrow. Have checked his temp and it is 37degC, so ok. Cheeks were quite rosy too, which is why I think he is teething. Gonna be in for another crap night I bet...

dundeemarmalade · 22/05/2008 19:20

glad it's not just with the teething! dd now has two purplish bruises on her lower gum, and is dribbling like #insert name of footballing type person#.
on the bottle feeding front, hurrah hurrah hurrah she took 50ml from a NUK teat today so all is not lost, and that after guzzling her carrot and baby rice gloop. thanks for the support everyone - your advice always WAY better than hv! mumsnet should be available in gp's and at baby clinics.

macdoodle · 22/05/2008 19:44

Well Lily soooo not interested in food tried baby rice, potato, sweet pots, carrot, banana and no go in fact go so far as to say she screams !
She is 21 weeks tomorrow still mostly BF with odd bottle of formula - gonna stop now for week or 2 and then try again

BouncingTurtle · 22/05/2008 20:33

I must confess to trying ds with a bit of baby rice yesterday, he was far more interested in chewing on the spoon! Pulled some very funny faces at the rice lol.

claraquitetirednow · 22/05/2008 20:42

Beckle - really sorry to hear about your dh losing his job, that must be very worrying. I feel bad for being smug about the current housing crisis going in our favour (as we are looking to rent out of house), it must be causing so many problems for so many people.

I'm glad it's not just my daughter who loves screeching. She's been a little better today, I guess she had enough of that noise yesterday. We had a brief reprise of the raspberries which are always particularly amusing when they are in reply to a question we've just asked her!

BT - sounds very much like teeth to me. Some babies don't seem too bothered by them but others seem to have teething issues for weeks at a time.

Skid - the advice from my dentist (as well as all the usual don't let them eat sweets, drink juice etc) was: clean their teeth first thing in the morning rather than after breakfast; only use a small smear of toothpaste and don't wet the toothbrush first (something to do with the foam caused by mixing water and toothpaste not being effective). I have to say making sure two-year-olds clean their teeth properly is pretty well impossible but she has got better since doing it alongside my dh every morning.

becklespeckle · 22/05/2008 20:50

I think Evie is ready to start weaning too, I have let her lick a piece of mango and some apple which she liked. Today I let her lick a piece of watermelon and she sat herself forward to get more in her mouth and was sucking it going "mmm...mmm...mmm"! She will be 20 weeks next week so will probably try some purees and rice then, the HV gave me a sheet about weaning today so I think maybe she was suggesting I think about it soon.

If you can see the purple on your DD's gums Dundee then the teeth are probably either through or nearly there!

I can now see DD's tooth when she smiles and also the little white points of the second one lurking under the gum! She seems to be coping better with the second one but the first was the worst, other than the canines, with the boys so fingers crossed.

becklespeckle · 22/05/2008 20:59

Thanks Clara, it is a worry but hopefully it'll all be okay. Perhaps this will be a blessing in disguise, I am trying to be optimistic! I think DH is going to give his own business a go and if we start to struggle here then we may sell up move up to Orkney, DH has family there and it is something we have talked about before. Don't feel bad about your house though, things are never good for all the people all the time (and I'm also a great believer in making hay while the sun shines)!

DD is also into blowing raspberries at the moment, she blew one with my nipple in her mouth earlier to let me know she had finished feeding!

becklespeckle · 22/05/2008 21:02

Ooh, meant to say Bouncing that HV said to put teeting stuff on around 20 mins before a feed so it has time to work. DD keeps pulling off and screaming at the mo, think she gets the hump when the milk flow slows - very frustrating!

buzzybee · 23/05/2008 08:36

Hi all. Have a great time in Santiago Suey! I loved Galicia generally - great beaches to the west and good food and wine.
The NZ government today came out with new food guidelines for babies - wait til 6 months!! It seems they follow UK guidelines with about a year's lag.
Macdoodle I have been giving DD the odd taste but not pushing it as she doesn't seem very interested. She's 21 weeks on Sunday.
Amani and beckle - NEVER get a nanny! Or at least not if you expect them to do any housework, they will certainly only cause you aggravation. I'm not a particularly fussy person but I CAN'T WAIT until my student nanny finishes up and I go back to having a claening lady come in every week. She's lovely with the kids but useless at housework - lazy, unobservant and needs to be told to do absolutely everything. My most recent gripe is that she's completely stopped hanging the washing on the line and today I found she'd been using disposable nappies because there were no washables upstairs (they were sitting downstairs in the washing basket, all nice and clean and dry and ready to go!) Sorry - end of moan!!!
Dundee great news about the bottle - keep on persisting!

macdoodle · 23/05/2008 08:39

So excited - today is last baby massage - DD1 has inset day and nice massage lady said she could come and watch/try massage DD2 - feel silly but am excited to show off my gorgeous bright DD1 to the other mums

Wizzska · 23/05/2008 12:13

Hi Everyone!

Am back after being offline for about a month. We had a thunderstorm and a power surge knocked out our router and ethernet card and the guy downstairs lost two tellies. It was a right old saga getting Sky to send another broadband router but I won't go any further into it now.

Got too much to read to catch up on so hope everyone's ok.

News from here, DS rolled over onto his tummy and back for the first time yesterday. Have still got sleep problems, he's been waking 1-2 hourly so we've put him in his own room for the past 2 nights and we're trying to go to him as little as possible. Seems better, only two night feeds last night as opposed to having to do it about 4 times as the only way to settle him.

Wii fit is good, we've got it. Don't have much spare time to go on it though but I love the step aerobics and boxing games though the stupid tune for the step gets stuck in your head.

Wizzska · 23/05/2008 12:16

Beckle - there's a lot of redundancies around. Hopefully your DH will be ok on his own. Am in two minds as to whether to give up my job which I would really like to do but am not sure DH will have enough landscaping and gardening work to see us through the winter. Its his first year on his own but doing ok at the moment.

skidaddle · 23/05/2008 14:07

hi wizz - welcome back, I was wondering where you'd got to! congrats on DS's rolling and glad nighttime wakes are a bit better. DS has at least 2 a night, often 3 so sounds like you're doing pretty well

Dundee - excellent news DD is taking a bottle, I'm sure she will keep it up now

clara - thanks for the tooth brushing tips - I wonder why before breakfast? And didn't know about not using water - will give it a go

beckle - really sorry to hear about your DH's job and hope you can turn it into a positive, must be v. scary. Me and DH will both be officially out of work in october so I know how worrying it is, especially when you have a mortgage to pay. Anyway I am optimistic that at least one of us will get a good job before then

buzzy - sorry to hear about your rubbish nanny although glad she is so good with your DDs

I have been feeling very guilty about starting DS on solids as he really doesn't seem too keen, at least when I feed him. There are loads of threads in the weaning section on MN about not starting before 6 months - can a medical person reassure me that I am not doing him any harm (I know you have already reassured me clara but I still feel bad!) Oh God why is there so much guilt that comes with being a mother?

claraquitetirednow · 23/05/2008 20:32

Skid - I know what you mean about the guilt, don't worry I get it all the time too - if its not weaning early it's giving up breastfeeding. Or letting dd1 watch tv. Or giving her chocolate. Etc etc etc. But at the end of the day you sound like you are a brilliant mum who is doing the best for her children, they are going to grow up great.

In terms of weaning early: who knows if it will cause any problems down then line. But do remember that a lot of our contemporaries who just happended to have children a few years ago didn't blink an eyelid about weaning at four months. I'm not saying it's right or wrong. I think we all have to make our own decisions and I respect people who decide to wait. But can it be that terrible considering how many people have done it?

OP posts:
BouncingTurtle · 23/05/2008 20:42

i offered ds banana and melon today. Still not interested.

Think we are in for another crap night - last night he woke up 5 times for a feed, but some were very short. He is quite snotty atm.
Put him down at 7pm, his usual time, but he woke up again for a short feed at 8pm, after I tried settling him other ways.

fifisworld · 23/05/2008 21:38

Hi Everyone

Welcome back Wizz

Skid - I know they recommend weaning from 6 months, but you are the only person who knows your baby and you will know when milk isnt enough for them. If your DS isnt really interested just try again in a week or so, and try not to feel guilty.
I was told by someone at the baby clinic a few weeks ago that apparently there was talk of changing it back to 4 months anyway.
Ethans so much more settled now he's having a proper tea before his bedtime bottle, but my bf's dd was 7.5 months before she had started weaning, so they are all different.

On the other hand, we had put Ethan on hungry baby milk from about 3 weeks as the premium wasn't filling him and he seemed to be constantly hungry. Anyway when i mentioned to the health visitor that i was thinking of doing this she told me that he shouldn't be on hungry baby milk as it wasn't suitable for new babies, even though its suitable from birth She'll love it when i tell her Ethans already on solids

Hope everyone else is ok
