I have seen them in our local Mothercare as well, Sal! No good to you as in Dublin but I'm guessing UK stores should have similar if you needed any more?

Sal22 · 17/05/2008 22:29

Thanks chipmonkey - sent dh to the big mothercare shop (mothercare world i think) and they said it's only done online, urgh! i just assumed she was right as they didn't have any at our local mothercare either (but ours is small anyway). if baby gets on well with moominsmummy's, i think i'll just order a couple online or if i see in any shop - whichever comes first.

i need all your help again (sorry!!!) - does anyone know where the best place is to learn how to wind a baby properly? the breast feeding adviser did say (and do once as well) how to in hospital, but at the time i thought she must just have the experience - after we "winded" him, she visited and winded him and he still burped quite a bit! after (and during long feeds) i always burp lo, but sometimes you can see he still has wind and i can't get it all to shift on occasion. then, when i had my checkup on friday, the doctor said that babies born to first-time-moms suffer from colic more often, most likely because they don't know how to wind babies properly. so - in case lo's pain is from my inability to wind properly - where do i go for help?? i've read up on how to of course, but in real life - is there anything similar to breastfeeding advisors? or a whole gap in the market for "burping advisors"?

VictorianSqualor · 17/05/2008 23:08

sal, best thing to do if you think they still have wind is move position.

I always sit ds forward and pat his back quite hard, then rub up and down and keep changing, you can actually feel it in ther back sometimes. If this doesnt work try having his head on your shoulder, lastly, lie them over your kneesso head hangs off one side, legs off the other (sideways) and pat quite hard that way.

I'd say a lot of first timers are worried about how hard to do it tbh or if are anythiung like DP don't sit them forward properly, DP has DS all stiff and weird, whilst I have him pretty relaxed and just use his chin to nsupport him, I can take a pic how I do it if it would help? I'll see if I can find a video of good winding.

Sal - I got some medela breast shields from this site and they came the day after I ordered them - so I do recommend them.

Speaking of burps - my LO let off the LOUDEST burp ever while winding out at lunch today! My word - who knew such a loud sound could come from someone so small!!

VictorianSqualor · 17/05/2008 23:25

I have a breast shield, I got it from mam with the free breast pump, never been used, still in box, can post monday if you want it?

Denny185 · 18/05/2008 09:46

Sal would say the same as VS, I start with sitting, then over shoulder/up chest/over knees, patting/rubbing quite firmly. Try and keep his back straight whilst doing, easier for him to shift the wind.

SuzeM · 18/05/2008 10:39

I'm also having trouble burping DD so if you can take a photo, VS, that would be great. I find if I lay her flat then pick her up, it makes her burp sometimes. She seems to be quite a windy baby and is in pain by the evening, it is horrible to see her distressed.

PeachyHas4BoysAndLovesIt · 18/05/2008 11:10

do the sitting, move onto over the shoulder; if no results then i use a baby amssage movement where you lay them flat, cup a hand under both feet and gently push into stomachrotatinga s you go so the legs go ina circle

VictorianSqualor · 18/05/2008 12:05

There is a video here on winding, but when she winds on her lap baby won't sit still, to stop that I lean DS2 forward slightly more.
Also I pat the back higher up than she is. Apart from that all good techniques.
HTH.

luckymummy74 · 18/05/2008 15:37

sal I have trouble winding me lo too . She just hardly ever burps after a feed (3 weeks old nearly). She is a very content baby so it doesn't seem to bother her much, but sometimes she really screams and I know she has trapped wind. I do same as VS and Denny, lots of different positions. I also find stretching them up, as you do when you lift them up (hands under their armpits) for example when you pass them to someone else, DD2 often lets out a burp then. I sometimes sit her on my lap and just stretch her upwards then relax, then repeat!!!

It's so satisfying when she does actually burp!!

Sal22 · 18/05/2008 16:27

hi everyone, thanks so much for all the help. watched the video and read all your posts (with dh), so fingers crossed that we'll get better at this winding thing!

we've just done a couple of positions and he burped more than usual, so hopefully we've got it now.

vs - i think you're right on the "not hard enough" bit as well though - i'm worried how hard it must feel to him sometimes. he seems to like it, but i've wondered if it feels really hard to him because he's so small . also, not sure if you meant breast shields for me, but if so, thanks very much, but i'm ok with them, it's just that i was trying to find a different bottle to use for ds, and the medela special needs one was recommended for colic babies. will report back on that one in case anyone's lo is ever unfortunate enough to have colic or swallowing-lots-of-wind problems.

mum2babyroo - thanks for the link, will def use.

chipmonkey · 18/05/2008 23:14

Sal. I think what I have found is that if you can get the spine fairly straight the wind will come up better. But a point to bear in mind is that a lot of the time, colic has nothing to do with wind; it's possibly a digestion problem. All our boys have been colicky and I noticed that the colic improving coincided with the baby pooing less often. I found colief dros worked very well for us.

scorpio1 · 19/05/2008 09:27

Millie has to go to the doctors today, she still has her cold and i want someone to check it. poor little girly. She wants to sleep but snorts and wakes herself up. have got saline drops but still not much better.

I fed her everywhere yesterday...M&S, the pub , restaurant, the car, etc etc... i dont care anymore!

To burp the babies i sit then up on my lap and hold them by their chin if that makes sense then do a mix of patting and rubbing her back. we normally get about 3 burps and you do have to do it harder than you think iyswim.

scorpio1 · 19/05/2008 10:35

btw, how is Ellie, do we know?

Mum2BabyRoo · 19/05/2008 11:20

Well it is with heavy heart that I admit defeat. I am giving up trying to breats feed. It has been 2 weeks now since Gabriella was born and all my breasts seem to do is make her scream. I have tried everything so I am not going to kid myself any longer. She is happy on the bottle and I am still expressing milk for her to drink - so she is getting something from me - but have to admit as well that my supply is not the greatest. I feel like such a failure. Not only did I not have the natural birth I wanted and worked hard preparing myself for - it seems the most natural thing in the world comes hard to me too. I am so upset.

VictorianSqualor · 19/05/2008 12:40

Oh M2B!
You are not a failure!
Really sorry, but I can't remember who has had what problems with the BFing, didn't you say Gabriella didn't like feeding from you?
Have you seen a BFC?
Not to worry anyway, it is better for her, but if it can't happen, it can't happen, you're not to blame.
I just really don't want you to stop (not give up...Stop.) because you haven't had the right support.

OP posts:
Sal22 · 19/05/2008 12:54

Oh mum2babyroo, i'm soooo sorry to hear you feel so down. I'm sure you know it despite feeling that way, but of course you're no failure!!!

You'll get lots of support and help on here, so I'm not even going to try and give advice (know next to nothing myself), just wanted to post to let you know wish I could be there to try and cheer you up.

She's getting milk from you anyway, and you've tried so hard, so if you want to stop, then I can't see anything wrong with that. However, if you still really want to breastfeed, why don't you try (another?) breastfeeding specialist? I know when I was in hospital I struggled at first, and every second midwife would give me contrasting advice. I remember on the 3rd night thinking I can't do this - sleep for what felt like 5 mins, then feeding, repeat. On the 4th day the bf specialist came in, saying "ignore all the previous advice", and helped me. Apparently some of the previous advice was "old fashioned".

Good luck though with whichever way you choose.

scorpio1 · 19/05/2008 12:58

please ring a BF counsellor. Sorry i can't help i dont really know anything about it.

Sal22 · 19/05/2008 13:00

Oh, and just had to laugh at myself - I almost got jealous about Millie's 3 burps! Hope all goes well at the doctor's and that she's feeling better soon, Scorpio.

scorpio1 · 19/05/2008 13:02

she seems ok in herself just want her checked cos its deffo more than a week now, lol @ your jealousy!!

Denny185 · 19/05/2008 14:01

M2B sorry you are so sad, some people are v lucky and BF happens easily for them, the rest of us have to work much harder to get it and sometimes its just too much. 2 weeks in your likely to be tierd and a little hormonal which is probably making you feel worse. Your baby needs a happy mummy and you do whatever will make you happy. If you think that being able to BF would make you happy if it was working then it might be worth contuing with some help, if you were both more settled your milk supply would probably increase (being stressed can reduce it). However if using bottles makes you happier then thats fine too. Reading this back sounds v long winded but hope you get what I mean, take the route which will make you again.

Scorpio sorry Millie still has her cold, thankfully Aeryns seems to be improving, much quieter night with less grunting.

We were supposed to be walking to the park for a picnic today with some friends but summer seems to have gone and we ended up at the local indoor play centre instead. Darling children now in bed so can mumsnet cook tea and do housework.

Did anyone see the times over the weekend, apparently I live in one of the best places in the North West, couldnt believe it when somone told me this am. Not sure what they judge it on - asthetics obviously not on the criteria.

VictorianSqualor · 19/05/2008 14:22

DP just got home, from his police fitness test.
He PASSED!!!!

Should get his offer of appointment any day now.

OP posts:
chipmonkey · 19/05/2008 14:24

Mum2BabyRoo, so sorry you haven't had better luck with the bf. I would also be inclined to say get another opinion but if you do give up, don't blame yourself or feel bad, at least you got some breastmilk into your LO, a lot of people don't even achieve that so you have done well!

Denny185 · 19/05/2008 14:25

Hooray, have you got you eye out for someone to have a fling with then. Is it a long wait till he starts at training school?
