Sal it must be the day for buying bouncer chairs! My gran sent us some money when Gigi was born and today we bought her a gorgeous fisher price one with the money she sent! She loves it and looks so cute in it!

elfsmummy · 14/06/2008 21:02

Evening all.

Have had the most lovely day. DH has had DD1 all day and Elena and I have been shopping this morning , met my dad for lunch and came home to chill out this afternoon. Feel like my old self again - amazing how something so simple can chill you out - although going to bed at 8 pm last night must have also helped!

mum2BabyRoo Elena is 13lb so pretty hefty so I'm not worried about the bath seat - she certainly seems very comfortable in it. On ours there is a guide for the water depth but I have to say that I have it a good 2 inches deeper than that as she's in for quite a long time (probably 10 -15 mins) and I worry that she'll get cold if too much of her body is out of the water.

Scamp I can't believe your DH. Hope he's mafde it up to you today.

Am off to wrap father's day pressies. Enjoy the rest of the weekend

Mum2BabyRoo · 14/06/2008 21:09

Thanks elfsmummy - Gigi is 10lb4oz so not too small - might try her on it tomorrow night. There is no guide on ours so should the water reach as far as their belly or is that too high?

elfsmummy · 14/06/2008 21:11

I'd say belly, I guess it comes up to her tummy button roughly. She loves it, kicking away, arms thrashing!

Sal22 · 14/06/2008 21:46

Mum2babyroo, that's gorgeous, so girly! We got Roelof this one.

Denny, R's quite noisy at night as well, especially now that he's got a stuffy nose. I'm not sure whether it's really bad hayfever or a cold, but at least he seems to be fine otherwise. The paediatrician we saw the other day said that the reason he breathed so noisily was an underdeveloped something or other (can't remember the name, but the cartilage in your throat when you breathe), but that it didn't bother him (R) and that it would resolve itself within 18 months. So by the time he's sleeping alone in his own room he'll be quiet. Timing, hey.

LadyBee · 14/06/2008 23:11

scorpio - v jealous about bugaboo, keep looking at them and trying to think of reasons not to get one (apart from obvious cost one). Must be strong...

Also had lovely day, had friends around and made use of the stash of frozen EBM and drank lots of lovely wine through the afternoon & evening. Benedict also went to sleep at 8:30 - amazed! Only problem is I'm now really full..and don't know whether I'm ok alcohol-wise to feed him now or if he'll wake up, or whether I should express some off for my own comfort or what. Am in state of indecision...and some discomfort.

Think I'm just going to have to get rid of some it. Feels like there'll be plenty if he does wake.

LadyBee · 14/06/2008 23:18

also..remembered Scorpio's description of thrush nipples - brown on areola and pink nipples...so that's not normal? is there any way to know for sure whether you have it or not? my nipples are still quite tender, and definitely pink/red-ish whereas areola are brown (not dark though, I'm quite fair). I haven't noticed any white marks in Ben's mouth though. D'you think there would be any harm getting some cream from the pharmacy and using it to see whether that helped tenderness or would it be A Bad Thing to use it if you don't know for sure you've got thrush. Does that make sense?

Sal22 · 14/06/2008 23:59

Peachy, if you're around: I saw on another thread that you recommended the Closer Baby carrier. Would you mind helping me with something, please:
Firstly - is it easy to get used to using a wrap (I've only ever used a Kangoo Pouch - similar to the Baby Bjorn)?
Secondly - is it in essence only one long piece of fabric, or is there anything else to it? I'm tempted to look for one of those as the pouch style carriers are great, but hurts my back after a while. However, I then saw this and wondered if I could make it myself (easily being crucial here though ).

chipmonkey · 15/06/2008 01:00

Ladybee, if you were drinking wine at a leisurely pace you should be fine to feed. The alcohol doesn't stay in the milk either, it reduces as the alcohol in your blood reduces. Might be no harm to express for comfort though.

VictorianSqualor · 15/06/2008 08:53

Ladybee if you do express, keep it.

If you drink whilst BFing unless your baby is very poorly or premature then you would need to drink a hell of a lot for it to affect your baby.

Tiktok has posted about this loads but you'd have to be a bloody good drinker to be able to drink the amount it takes to affect baby, if you feed after drinking yes it does g into the milk but in such small amounts.

Also it comes out of milk the same rate as blood, so 1 unit and hour from the time you started drinking so if you're worried and want absolutely no alcohol to go through to baby that's how to work it out.

Had a nice day with DD yesterday, left DS1 at home with DP and went into the City shopping, spoilt her rotten, bought myself a few bits too and had an ice cream, life is so much easier without a 3year old hanging around!! I think he enjoyed having Daddy to himself without a baby around too.

Sal -- a wrap is prtty easy to get used to, but it takes a bit of practice to get the hang of the various ties and carries. And you generally need to retie/readjust whenever you put the baby in or out. One advantage with the Close Baby Carrier is that as it's not a proper wrap it's a bit quicker to put on and take off and doesn't need adjusting so much, but then it's not quite so versatile.

The thing to remember with wraps is that the stretchier the fabric the easier it is to use, and the more comfortable it'll be for a small baby -- but also the stretchier the fabric the less suitable it'll be for a heavier/older baby.

I expect you could make your own wrap pretty easily -- just bear that in mind about the fabric.

LadyBee · 15/06/2008 11:05

well I did end up expressing, 5 oz came out of one side, 2 from the other but I tipped it out as I hadn't sterilised my pump beforehand (v lazy). Didn't seem to matter though, Ben slept through until 3am so by that time we were very much ready to go again - and again at 5:30 am and again at 8:30.
Was v impressed with Benedict's sleep - wonder what (if anything) prompted the earlier bed. Maybe more stimulation/being outside in day? or maybe he got more milk earlier because we were feeding him with the bottle? Will be interested to see what happens today.

Sal, I have a hugabub sling which is just a long piece of cotton jersey fabric, and can get into fairly quickly now that I've had a bit of practice (also have wilkinet and brightspark coorie). The hugabub has a bit of shaping at the ends of the fabric and an extra non-stretchy square of fabric in the middle which I think gives a bit more support behind the baby's back. I think it would be pretty simple to make something similar though. Could bring to meetup if you wanted to take measurements/try out?

thank for the info about alcohol processing - good to know. Felt so nice to sit around not worrying about whether I should have just the one that I did sort of lose track of how much I'd had..felt it a bit this morning

Sal22 · 15/06/2008 12:09

Thanks for the info, PAL and Ladybee. I'll try and make up my mind, but if still in doubt by the time we meet up, I might ask you to show me your hugabub, Ladybee. Thanks for the offer.

Roelof has a terrible cold, so I'm off to cuddle him, poor thing. Except for the cough and nose, he doesn't seem to be in any pain and is feeding well. Will try and keep him upright today, it seems to help.

chipmonkey · 15/06/2008 13:35

Just for future reference, Ladybee, so long as the pump is clean, it doesn't have to be sterile. In the USA, no-one sterilises breast pumps. And the "rules" about sterilising are really more relevant for formula, rather than EBM, which has antibacterial properties anyway.

scorpio1 · 15/06/2008 15:00

i can only ever get 3oz at absolute most from expressing, what am i doing wrong?

If i express in the morning its ok and i can get 3oz easily but any other time of day and im forcing it tbh. i can never ever get a whole feed in one sitting iyswim.

Just make sure i express in the mornings then?

Mimi is sleeping really well still. Had a nice day out walking, its lovely here. Going out to the cinema tonight.

scorpio1 · 15/06/2008 15:01

its a tommee tippee hand pump btw.

i discovered you can hire those medela double ones for £40 p/month, worth it? I need to leave Millie for nearly a whole day soon so need to stockpile, lol.

EllieG · 15/06/2008 15:23

Hello all - sorry to come on here just to moan, but I really need to talk to some friendly people

I am in London as Rob had a heart attack on thurs. It was only a minor one but still scary, and since he needs an angeogram and they can't do them at home he has been taken to St George's Hospital. Me and Molly have come too. I am trying to be really brave and strong and not scared for him but I am so miserable and I am scared for him and for me and the girls. They have been lovely here - they put him in a private room so Molly can visit without worrying about infections too much, but I still am. I feel so guilty about bringing her but I couldn't think what else to do - there was no one to look after her at home and she is so very little I thought she was better with me. But am so worried she will pick something up, though am being really careful. Rob is OK, very down, and I am trying to be really positive. The proceedure is tomorrow, and hopefully they will find his arteries are clear, if not he might need a bypass which they will do there and then.

And this is obviously selfish and stupid, but we were supposed to be getting married on sat and all cancelled. I am just glad that ROb is ok but still, it would have been such a lovely day and is a bit shit really.

That's all. Am bit down in the dumps. Have not cried at all and now am snivelling in an internet cafe in Tooting. Bloody hell. Am going before someone notices.

Sorry to moan.

EllieG · 15/06/2008 15:24

Oh and scorpio - I have had to stop breastfeeding as milk dried up after stupid midwives bad advice - you can have my medala pump if you don't need in next few days. I was going to come on here and offer it to someone is only a little one but still good. If you want it I will give you my email and you can email me your address and I will send it.

EllieG · 15/06/2008 15:25

Oh silly me, just read that you have one and need a double. If anyone else wants it is up for grabs though is electric one. I could never get on with the hand ones

Sal22 · 15/06/2008 15:42

Ellie, I'm so sorry to hear you're having such a rough time. And it's understandable that you're disappointed about Saturday, anyone would be. I think having Mollie with you is the right thing - for all of you. I'll think of you and your family and hope that all is ok tomorrow. Big big hugs.

EllieG · 15/06/2008 16:06

Thanks sal x

Mum2BabyRoo · 15/06/2008 16:48

So sorry to hear your news Ellie - sending positive vibes your way. I hope your DP gets better soon and that he doesn't need a bypass. Totally understandable about being upset about your wedding - I am sure your DP is as well. Def having Molly with you is the best thing - I am sure she will be fine. for you]]

PortAndLemon · 15/06/2008 17:12

Ellie -- really sorry to hear that.

St George's is pretty close to me (it was one of my options for where to have DD) so if you have time when you can't be hanging around with Rob and want to snivel on a real live shoulder just let me know. If I can find your email address I'll email you my phone numbers.

chipmonkey · 15/06/2008 17:44

Poor Ellie! Hioe he's better soon.

Scorpio, if you express at the same time each mornong you should gradually start to produce more milk at that time. I've always used Avent pumps and find them great but have never tried Tommee Tippee so can't compare. If you're looking for a double, look for an AmedaLactaline on ebay, They're hospital grade and better value than hiring.

scorpio1 · 15/06/2008 19:21

Ellie

So sorry about Rob, that must have been really scary! And i was thinking today you must be a Mrs now keep brave Can i still try your pump please? Is an electric better than a hand one? I will pay you for it email stephaniematthews943 at btinternet dot com

Chipmonkey - i just never seen to have much time, she feeds at 8am then its boys to school, then my brekky etc, guess i could just fit it in after brekky or something? its just remembering i would like to have enough just to go out once a week or something.
