sagitta - re the routine, it's totally up to you, but I think that lo's benefit from a routine of sorts. As scorpio says, sometimes they sort their own routines out, sometimes they need a bit of a hand, so to speak.

Livi seems to Eat, play for a bit and then sleep, then wake up for a bit and then eat agian, play etc etc etc. I did however give her a helping hand at bedtime by having a bath and quiet time with a feed last thing at night to signal end of day etc (and I have taught her to settle herself in her cot - so I can put her down and then leave the room and spend time with DH). We are still 'tweaking the edges' of our routine -but so far so good.

Denny185 · 23/05/2008 11:51

Morning TMP, Im here, just put DD2 to bed, bit of a whingy morning but she has just poo'd for england (v glad i put a towel of the changing mat to mop it up) so think that may have been the problem. DS just got in the bath with DH so have a few mins peace B4 i need to get him out and dressed again.

DH on lates again today so have another military operation this evening (no DS to bath now though ob) sagitta I dont think i'd survive without routine, I like to know roughly what i need to be doing at each stage of the day otherwise i get to the evening and theres still a zillion and one things to do.

TheMaskedPoster · 23/05/2008 12:09

Ah-ha Denny - at last someone else (and I have to go out now, typical )

I know what you mean about monumental Poos. Livi usually does a poo after each feed,( and if not each feed then every other one) but has been known to go for a few without going. Then has been very out of sorts only to produce an almight explosion and seems to right herself - and yes, sometimes it gets everywhere.
Lucky I'm not squeamish at all with things like this cos DH turns into a pathetic mess in such occassions! LOL

Also the 'flying solo' thing in the evenings (ie when the DH's go out), I find scary at first and then once you've done it once or twice it's a doddle (and then when it comes to our turn to go out and leave them in control - we can grin and remember how they are feeling!)

Mollyfloss · 23/05/2008 12:17

Hello!

Thanks Sal for the link to the surround book. It was delivered today

LO has a stuffy nose unfortunately, the poor thing. I've elevated the cot and am giving her saline drops. It has made feeding a bit difficult for her and she is sncking here and there instead of doing good long feeds. The important thing is that she is getting the milk into her I suppose.

Have any of you got a routine going? LO's natural routine isn't too bad and she is only 5 weeks old anyway so I don't expect any sort of routine yet but i'm wondering when they should start a bit of a routine and what I should expect. Now she's on 7 feeds a day with about 3 hours between them during the day and a bit longer at night. When do they go down to 6 feeds?

Denny185 · 23/05/2008 12:52

Molly they all vary, think it just depends on the stomachs abilty to take more milk, some will drop feeds after a few weeks others could still be on 7+ feeds for a few months. We have a vague routine but it is flexible depending on going out/LO wanting an extra feed/being more sleepy/alert etc

Feeds are 7am, 10am, 12noon (dosent always have this one), 2pm, 4.30pm, 6pm, 11pm, 4-5am.
Somewhere in the day feeds she tends to have 3 sleeps, the longest tends to be at lunchtime but some days shes v sleepy in the am and has her long one there. Then bed at 7pm

The amount of feeds in the afternoon/evening is what causes my grief at getting every one else dinner/baths etc as shes not the quickest to have her fill.

scorpio1 · 23/05/2008 13:15

Millie is chewing my nipples off today must resist formula....

scorpio1 · 23/05/2008 13:16

i just mean she is feeding alot.

Denny185 · 23/05/2008 13:37

She hasnt developed a set of teeth overnight then Formula is v tempting on those days insnt it, I just think of the price of it, enough to keep me strong.

VictorianSqualor · 23/05/2008 13:42

Scampmum My hv told me to put breast milk on ds2's eye when it was weepy and it cleared it up really quickly, also DD&DS1 have both had some of my bm cos they wanted to taste it so i let them have some I'd expressed.

Re: routine, ours is pretty much
5am:wake up with bellyache, have huge poo, feed, awake til 8am, sleep til 11am, little feed.
1am, quick feed before school run, fall asleep about 2:30pm, 4pm feed, 6pm feed, 8:30pm bath, 9pm feed, 9:30pm bed.
nightwakings vary, always between 1-2am
sometimes more.

scorpio1 · 23/05/2008 13:48

well i won't give it to her but i do have 2 tins in the cupboard that i got before she was born. She has only just come off and went on at 11.30!

scorpio1 · 23/05/2008 13:50

ours goes :

feed 7am, awake, school run go to sleep. wake up at 9.30, feed. feed 11.30 - big feed and then 2 hour ish sleep. Feed about 2.30pm, again at 5.30 ish, 7 ish and then 9.30.

Wakes at 5am ish but goes back to sleep.

scorpio1 · 23/05/2008 13:51

9.30pm feed is always massive!

scorpio1 · 23/05/2008 13:54

think she wants to go back on...arrgghhhhhhhh

is it growth spurt time?

VictorianSqualor · 23/05/2008 13:57

Alex's last feed is always the biggest, I'll sometimes give him one breast at 8ish, then bath him, then he'll have both breasts (sometimes even three) and be absolutely drunk on BM. Awake but just laying there, glazed over
That's when I put him to bed, he normally falls asleep within about half hour.
I did try dreamfeed at about 11pm thinking maybe he'd sleep til more like 3am than 1am if I did it but it hardly made any difference, he didn't wake up enough to take it and my boobs just got all hard from wanting to feed so we packed that in.

Probably Scorpio.
Repeat after me....

It will pass.
It'll last a couple of days and stop.

repeating...just they feel so empty if that makes sense? nipples feeling very used too iyswim...have lanisoh though. seems to have just started today. I am not packing it in though, i cannot believe how easy it is to go out etc - just stick baby up top and carry on, lol!

sagitta · 23/05/2008 15:10

hmm, well the whole routine thing - which worked beautifully yesterday - looks shot to shit today as A is just so sleepy I can"t keep her awake. ho hum. its going to be a tricky night! And i'm on my own...let's hope dd1 behaves!

Mollyfloss · 23/05/2008 15:25

thanks for the feedback on your routines. Mine lo feeds about once every 3 hours during the day and a bit more spaced apart during the night. She is fairly good at night in general. My main issue is waking her up as she falls asleep fairly quickly on the boob. I hate having to wake her as she looks so cute but otherwise she'd be snacking all day!

Sal22 · 23/05/2008 16:14

Cool, Molly, hope LO likes the book!

I'm quite embarrassed to admit that I've got no clue about Roelof's routine, or lack thereof... It would be interesting to see if he's got a natural one, I'll start noting down times etc. We've basically just been going with whatever he fancies, as I seem to lose track of time anyway. I think generally he eats every 3 hours or so - sometimes more, sometimes less.

I've been mix feeding, normally giving him one bottle of formula (or DH giving, actually) per night, with the rest BM. But I think the formula makes him a bit more constipated, so I'll try and increase the expressing - maybe make up that extra bottle during the day. It might not even be that, but thought I'll give it a try. I also suspect the gaviscon that he has to take for his reflux makes him a little const. - anyone else had a similar experience? It's quite funny really - after seeing him struggle it's such a relief when he's got a dirty nappy all of a sudden! Never thought I'd be saying those words...

VictorianSqualor · 23/05/2008 16:15

scorpio, feeling empty is good, it means your breasts are used to how much they need to make and aren't producing too much iyswim, it's partly what growth spurts are about too, your production slows down to how much baby needs, then baby starts to need more, so they feed more, to make your production go up to how much is now needed, once production is at the 'new' 'right level' they go back to feeding the normal amount and just take more each feed, they also become more adept at taking milk and it goes back down to a small length of time, but for a bigger feed.

VictorianSqualor · 23/05/2008 16:16

sal, i have to know routine with two others and school runs/family meals/bath times etc to fit in!

OP posts:
Sal22 · 23/05/2008 16:53

vs. as one of 4 children, i always thought i wanted the same set-up once i'm grown up. think i'll wait to see if it gets easier with this lo first now!

Mollyfloss · 23/05/2008 17:02

I wouldn't be bothered if I got pregnant again right now except only I want time to enjoy this ok before the next
