will let you know if/when she replies

off to watch Heroes

PillockOfTheCommunity · 24/04/2008 21:08

oh SPB
It is so heartbreaking seeing your baby in pain and not being able to do anything about it. you just want to make it go away

I'm just passing by before I go off to blub some more. Just sat for 3 hours reading my book, it's called Before I Die, by Jenny Downham. I've finished it now, and cried lots. It's fiction, and very sad, but in a lovely and thoughtful way. but it's made me cry lots!

runnyhabbit · 24/04/2008 21:10

reply from mj

"I am assuming it needs to be clean sample if they suspect uti. Only way really is to to take nappy off and catch some in a clean pot, make sure he is clean too. If sample is contaminated then result will not be reliable. Hope that helps xx"

StealthPolarBear · 24/04/2008 21:19

Thanks runny and Pillock
Oh well, I'll just have to keep trying!
4th time lucky!
What's everyone else up to tonihgt?

elkiedee · 24/04/2008 21:39

Sorry SPB to hear about T's infection, hope you can get the clean sample.

MJ, you're much braver than I would be, worrying about treatment and not even able to comfort eat. No, seriously, I hope cutting out the fat does help you feel less pain.

POTC, sounds like that book's really really got to you.

One year ago today D was due. I was sure he was going to be late, but it didn't make me feel any happier being proved right. I watched lots of episodes of Pregnancy and Birth on Living TV too.

Pesha, it sounds like someone's sending out a standard letter re access injunctions that's totally inappropriate in your case. Hope you sort out the appointment, but I would be inclined to complain about the letter as well - does your HA have somewhere you can email something? It sounds like very bad practice to threaten you.

cazboldy · 24/04/2008 21:40

I don't know SPB......contaminated by what exactly?????

If MJ says a pot is the way to go, then I would go with that.

StealthPolarBear · 24/04/2008 21:43

That's how we tried all the other times caz, I have no idea how it was contaminated, I guess just by the air

geordieminx · 24/04/2008 21:44

I'm home!!!!!!!!!

PillockOfTheCommunity · 24/04/2008 21:45

woohoooo

we missed you!

Doobydoo · 24/04/2008 21:45

Sorry to hear about T SPB.But I reckon antibiotics will kick in fast.
If totally desperate re wee catching situation you could try cotton wool in nappy and squeeze it out.I know it sounds weird but have done it when I was a nurse. If you don't have any am sure chemist would have some sterile cotton wool or as has been mentioned the stick on wee bags can be good
Really hope the diet helps Mammyj
Great re actual moving date NL
Hope everyone else is ok.
M being tres whingy...hideous few nights and today I hope he peeked.I hope it is teeth
Good night all.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Doobydoo · 24/04/2008 21:46

cazboldy · 24/04/2008 21:46

well wishing you lots of luck SPB

Welcome back GM

Did you make the spag bol POTC?

StealthPolarBear · 24/04/2008 21:46

welcome back gmm, good time?

StealthPolarBear · 24/04/2008 21:47

thanks caz when we finally manage it I will be an expert on catching little boy wee in a pot

PillockOfTheCommunity · 24/04/2008 21:50

not yet, that's planned for the weekend caz ('tis about my level of cookery!)

SPB - meant to say I've tried 3 ways of getting samples from babies, with both of mine. With M they gave me a pot, no way was that working, so they suggested the cotton wool in nappy as Dooby says. With J they put one of the special wee bags on. If you find you can't do it, don't be afraid to ask for help, tell them you know there are other ways without the catheter and you want them tried first.

StealthPolarBear · 24/04/2008 21:52

We had a sample pack which I suppose is one up from cotton wool in nappy but he wouldn't oblige. had never heard of wee bags before though so will def ask about them if it comes to it.

PillockOfTheCommunity · 24/04/2008 21:52

I am banning myself from the rest of MN. My fingers are twitching to post on a thread started by someone calling themselves ofstedoutstanding, yet they used no instead of know and have a dire grasp of English language and grammar

cazboldy · 24/04/2008 21:53

POTC - well they seemed to like it anyway, and my lot certainly do.... i know the baked beans seem a little odd, but ds1 went through a stage where he just asked for beans all the time, and then we decided that we quite liked it really anyway

PillockOfTheCommunity · 24/04/2008 21:54

It's a bag, with a small hole in the top which you poke his willy into, then the bag sticks to his body around the hole, like a plaster would. They're not great when you have to peel them off, but they do the job.

Doobydoo · 24/04/2008 21:56

SPB I am surprised they didn't send you home with a good supply of wee bagsam sure they will have em.Catheter seems extreme.Anyway...good luck.Once the AB'S kick in he will be flying

geordieminx · 24/04/2008 22:18

SPB - I have a bag I can send you?

elkiedee · 24/04/2008 22:52

POTC, is it the spelling or the content that's your problem?

Maybe you should post something on in Pedants' Corner

zazas · 24/04/2008 22:56

Hi SPB, sorry to hear that T might have a UTI. I am well up on these things as S has had 4 since she was born! We have used all sorts of things to get a clean sample and the most effective has been this pad that they place in a nappy and then syringe the wee out. You just have to make sure that his bottom has been well washed with only water. They are only new apparently and our GP never has them so I go to the children's unit at the hospital to get a pack if I suspect a UTI. Actually if I was you (and I don't know if it is practical) I would take T to the hospital to have him tested or better still get an immediate referral. They always managed to get a sample within an hour of being there and I always left with antibiotics that day (except the times we were hospitalised when she was very small). It is also good as they do all the other tests to make sure it is not another infection ie chest / ears etc. He shouldn't have to wait another day for AB's, it seems like it has dragged on long enough. Don't let them fob you off - they did this with S and her first infection and she became very, very ill, babies are not the same as adults or even bigger kids! I don't mean to worry you but I just want you to know that sometimes you need to push them to sort things out - in my experience. Take care.

mammyjo · 25/04/2008 09:34

SPB, did you manage to get a sample? Making you wait over the weekend for antibiotics is absolutely ridiculous. An urgent microscopy can be requested on a urine sample, and you can get a result within an hour. From that you will know whether he has an infection or not as they can count the level of white cells in there.
Bags can be used to catch a sample, as can the cotton wool trick, the problem is that if he is not completely clean before hand (or even does a bit of a wet fart when he has these in his nappy!) then the sample will become contaminated. Very difficult to get a good sample from babies unfortunately. The contaminants are just other bugs, normally from the babies bum tbh, but they cloud the result and can give inaccurate cell counts iyswim.
