Thanks @GWhiteley. It's the same with my husband, working 5.5 days a week at the moment and is shattered when he gets in so I can't ask him to help through the night. It's good that you can trust your in laws too. Its things like this that make me consider moving back to the UK, my whole family and good friends are still there, but brexit has made that a bit difficult now.

@AdventuresAwait ah yes, that lovely red area... got another leap to get through before that, I'll take it one thing at a time 😅

AdventuresAwait · 24/01/2022 19:36

Very true @Scotti84! But we're through number 4 which is supposed to be the most difficult 🥳

GWhiteley · 26/01/2022 02:55

Does anyone else's baby still suffer with bad, sometimes severe, trapped wind?

It seems to be every night at some point I'll need to give her dentinox & wouldn't dream of feeding, winding then putting in basket. Winding does nothing & so I keep her semi upright for about half an hr so she's fallen asleep & started to digest. Last night was awful & she cried a lot. Course all she wants to do is feed from me, but I'm not sure that's helping. Surely she shouldn't be getting it this regularly at almost 5 months?

Bubbles1st · 26/01/2022 08:02

@GWhiteley we dont really seem to suffer here any more and in the night I don't tend to wind anymore. Once he has done feeding I just roll him straight back into his bed.

However occasionally in the day he will seem really upset and I won't understand why and then he pukes everywhere! So that could wind I'm missing in the day.

CherLW · 29/01/2022 21:07

Hey everyone, hope you’re all ok. Just catching up on the thread! Can not believe how quick the time is going!!

Jesse has just turned 5 months so weaning is approaching VERY soon! Is anyone else finding the thought of thinking of foods to give everyday really overwhelming? I want to give him as many different things as I can but really can’t get my head around where to start!

Bubbles1st · 29/01/2022 21:27

Hi @CherLW
5 months here too, where has the time gone indeed!

I'm really excited about weaning to be honest.
As parents our diet needs a complete overhaul and sharing food and doing baby led weaning is the incentive she kick up the arse we need to get a grip.

I'm happy that we will just feed what we are eating but cut appropriately and without any added salt.

I've actually eaten so terribly this week (although my period has returned so I blaming that) but it's actually made me feel really guilty. Making me wonder if my breast milk is as nourishing as it could be when I'm not hydrated enough and living off junk.

Either way we will make a concerted effort to offer a variety of foods each week once weaning is fully established but the book I've been reading says that it takes 2 weeks for muscles to even develop that allow swallowing, so not too worried to start with if we offered repeated food just to get him used to it.

AdventuresAwait · 29/01/2022 22:40

Hi @CherLW and @Bubbles1st! 5 months here on Wednesday... I cannot believe it! Those months have flown by.

Amazing to think she'll be weaning soon. I think I'm leaning towards BLW with some purees, offered at different meal times with a gradual range of foods included. Still reading up on it all but getting nervous and excited! Still needing to strengthen head holding when sitting to get ready for the high chair but definitely getting there!

My period returned early this month too @Bubbles1st. Took me by surprise after so long of not having one! Also eating junk... really going to try and eat better now xx

Scotti84 · 30/01/2022 07:27

@CherLW @Bubbles1st on guidance from our doctor we started weaning last week, the advice here is one vegetable for at least 3 days to get her used to it before trying the next, its also good to see if there are any reactions then we know exactly what shes not ready for yet. Ive pureed a load of carrot, potato, sweet potato and parsnip and frozen it in ice cube trays then warm one up to have with her midday feed. It looks like the guidance is quite different over here, they say to do this for a couple of months then we can start putting potato and veg together etc and then add in blended oats to the morning feed, there's a recipe, its not just oats, then after another few months, add it into the evening meal and as she is happy with it, give her more and more food and phase out the milk. Sounds completely different to uk advice.

CherLW · 30/01/2022 08:51

@AdventuresAwait I have been reading the book you mentioned which is helping too. Makes so much sense when she talks about BLW. I always thought to do one meal a day where he can have some solids but in the book it says they can have solids whenever I do.. which confused me even more! I think I’m going to do some purée and also solid finger foods for him too.

@Bubbles1st i know what you mean, sometimes I eat utter crap and feel bad about the milk for Jesse but he’s growing strong so I must be doing ok.

His neck and head muscles are really good when he’s sat up and he’s loving his high chair.. I just put him in it for a bit now and then and ill start sitting him in it when I eat too soon.

@Scotti84 it’s strange isn’t it that it’s so different.. it all works out the same in the end tho 😊. Like the sound of the oats for breakfast, I’ve been looking at things with oats and saw ‘banana fingers’ which is oats and bananas which you microwave and can cut into fingers…

Ladies who had GD.. when I had my health visitor visit she mentioned I would get an extra check up with Jesse around 6 months because I had GD.. anyone else?

AdventuresAwait · 30/01/2022 09:23

@CherLW, I think they say you can offer BLW food when you eat because, at first, they don't get much, I think the focus is that they're exploring and chewing etc & also because they will only have as much as they need as they are controlling it. I'll be doing more BLW and some purees to supplement. She'll still get what she needs from milk feeds. I agree that the book seems to really make sense. I think some babies seem to prefer the finger foods and some the purees so will she how she goes! Will look up the banana fingers. They sound good.

Re. Head control, I remember thinking that we were still working on it when others on here were starting to hold their head up. Think she just started to do it a bit later so we just have a bit more developing to go here.

I wasn't told about more checks due to GD. I had a blood test and that was it.

Bubbles1st · 30/01/2022 10:27

@CherLW I didn't get told I needed any extra check up because of GD directly but when I had my bloods done at 8 weeks the dr said I had a fatty liver which can just be left over from pregnancy but to check again in 6 months.

Noodles4Me · 30/01/2022 13:48

My boy is 5 1/2 months. He's been having one food feed a day. Either baby porridge (banana or strawberry) or cheesy brocoli.

It's Kendamil ready made. I'm going back to work full time soon so not got time for excessive puree ...nor can I be arsed (kudos to those of you who can)

I'll try him on peas and spuds when he's older though.

Hope everyone good Smile

Newmum110 · 30/01/2022 21:51

Have realised this evening that my baby is just not getting enough sleep. I know this could be the 4 month sleep regression but wondering how much sleep yer little ones are getting. Mine is getting about 9 hours at night waking for 2 bottles in that time then probably 2 hours broken into cat naps throughout the day. He is very cranky so I think he needs more sleep, how much sleep are yer little ones getting? From online reading it seems 15 hours is the norm so he is really missing out.

MrsTD88 · 30/01/2022 22:07

@Newmum110 most days she'll wake around 7am/7.30am & feed; nap from around 9.30am until about 11 and feed; nap again roughly 1pm-2pm then feed; nap again about 3.30pm until 5pm and feed and then be awake until last feed at 7.30pm(ish) and then asleep by 8/8.30pm. Roughly 15 hours of sleep a day. Her nap times are pretty consistent because of the school run. She's 19 weeks tomorrow. If she gets any less sleep than that she can be very cranky. She does technically sleep all night (doesn't have a night feed) but can be quite a noisy sleeper. I'm definitely not getting thr benefit of a full night's sleep yet!

AdventuresAwait · 30/01/2022 22:42

@Newmum110, my baby is in bed around 7.30 to 8pm until 8am most nights, waking for 1 or 2 feeds (at the moment) in that time. She then has 3 or 4 naps in the day totalling 2 to 3 hours so approx 14 to 15 hours on average.

Newmum110 · 31/01/2022 08:08

Wow that is amazing, I really need to start focusing on his sleep more. He was a really happy little fella when he was sleeping more but once the sleep has decreased he has become a complete crank. Will try get him into a routine from today on.

bewitchingnight · 31/01/2022 09:55

@Newmum110 to add a different perspective.. mine is 20 weeks and will go to sleep for the night anywhere between 9 and 11, is usually up in the morning between 8 and 9. We've done the sleep regression but she now wakes up every hour at night (end of every sleep cycle, exhausting) but luckily doesn't take long to resettle so she doesn't spend much of the night awake even though I do! Probably gets between 10 and 11 hours usually.

Naps - usually 4 in a day, some 30 mins, usually one longer one that could be 1.5 hours. She naps more if we've had a day out and about. Maybe 3-4 hours in total. So for a day between 13 and 15.

We aren't on a schedule although I would say we have a routine, just with no times set in stone! The thing I've noticed that stops her getting upset/grumpy is to follow a 2 hour window - so two hours from her last sleep I aim to be either feeding her to sleep or settling her to sleep with shushing etc.

AdventuresAwait · 31/01/2022 10:20

@bewitchingnight, @Newmum110.. I would say the same: not a time schedule as it can differ but a routine of play, sleep, feed! Also know after a couple of hours that she'll be getting hungry/tired. Think it is quite similar! She is 21 weeks.

Bubbles1st · 31/01/2022 11:42

5 months today here and I have a cat napper who wakes like clock work after 30mins in the day unless it's a contact nap and then he can go 2-3 hours. Usually naps approx 10.30/ 1 / 4

Goes down anywhere from 8-10 at night usually waking twice however... that's all changed the last week and he is so grumpy and wanting to go to bed by 7.30 but wakes up almost hourly until 2am when I give and have him in bed with me and then he might last until 6. Then will go down again until 8.30.

It's so tiring so I can't imagine how he feels!

Sillysocks998 · 31/01/2022 11:57

@Newmum110 hey, mine sleeps through the night now. He's 26 weeks this week. From 9 to 7am. In the day he sleeps 1130 to 1pm and around 2,3pm to 5pm. So it's pretty much 15 hours too. He's on 7 ounces 3 times a day and a 4th bottle 5 ounces.

Sillysocks998 · 31/01/2022 12:00

Also lovely ladies, im due back at work in April 2022. Is anyone else due back around this time or before and what are you doing about childcare? I'm currently looking at nurseries around our area but it's so hard. I've seen 7 now. I've only liked about 3. And I have 2 more to see. Are there any early years teachers here? Or early years specialists? What should I be asking at nursery? How can I make sure they will follow the curriculum and are passionate about what they do?
Thanking you all in advance x

AdventuresAwait · 31/01/2022 12:54

@Sillysocks998 not returning to work yet but I'm an early years teacher and have worked in nurseries with babies from 3 months and up before that.
I would be asking about child:adult ratios, how much they follow individual routines and about communication - daily as well as baby's record of learning. I would also ask about the food provided & also the behaviour policy (good to know for later months) as well as settling in & comforting when needed. I personally would be asking about the amount of outside play opportunities but that's due to my EY loves and ethos! Not sure if helpful but those are my first thoughts. You may also just get a good feeling as you look around if that makes sense xx

Sillysocks998 · 31/01/2022 13:31

@AdventuresAwait thank you so much. Are you in the UK at all?
Many of the nurseries say they follow 1 to 4 ratio in a baby rooms. Outdoor learning is at the top of my list. I need to ask about behaviour policy and how they comfort. And I can ask about individual routines. I've asked about food. Having a in house cook is best who takes into consideration allergies etc. I've seen 7 of them and some of them I didn't get a good vibe. I like colorful settings as does my lo. But I tend to have beige / calm time too. So he is not hyper when older. Ftm.. Hard to know what's right at this stage. Thank you for your input x
I really don't like the baby rooms though.

AdventuresAwait · 31/01/2022 14:10

@Sillysocks998, I'm in England so its the EYFS framework and the ratio for under 2 years of age is one adult to three children with that. I think it's great that you're visiting a few as you'll get to know what you're looking for Xx

AdventuresAwait · 31/01/2022 14:13

@Sillysocks998, I'm sure others will be more help as I've not experienced it as a parent xx
