I’ve seen a few of you talking about weaning.. are you planning to do purée food or baby led weaning?

I’ve just bought Jesse a Bumbo multi seat as font really have the room for a full high chair… he seems to sit in it ok now but still about 6 more weeks or so until food!

Scotti84 · 15/01/2022 20:13

We attempted weaning today, I got a booklet from the dr with recipes and tips in it. I blended carrot with a bit of oil and gave her 4 small spoonfuls with her midday(ish) feed. Lilly seemed very happy to take it, got it off the spoon n swallowed ok. Its such a small amount I guess it's just to get her stomach used to it, I am strangely interested to see how it comes out the other end 😅

AdventuresAwait · 15/01/2022 20:26

@CherLW, we're going to be doing baby led weaning as soon as she is ready after 6 months. I've read one book about it that I really liked and have started one other. The second talks about using solids and purees. Loved what I read about baby led weaning so I'll read the second and then decide whether to do some purees too Xx

AdventuresAwait · 15/01/2022 20:35

Ahh @Scotti84, exciting! Great that Lilly had it and swallowed it straight away xx

CherLW · 15/01/2022 21:24

@AdventuresAwait I like the idea of baby led weaning. I’ve been trying to do as much research as I can about it as I’ll be starting after 6 months when he’s ready too. What books have you found useful? Would be great to know 😊 xx

Bubbles1st · 15/01/2022 22:06

We are going with BLW from 6 months, have just put his chair at the table to get used to sitting with us

@CherLW this is the book I've got and it's brilliant. Very easily helps explain the benefits of BLW.

Solid starts is an awesome free app which tells you what good can be eaten when and what to prepare according to babies age. Example also attached

6 weeks to wait here and I'm so excited. We've already let him lick things like cucumber and pear and he would happily try and eat if we let him but definitely want to wait until his gut is mature enough and he no longer needs so many nutrients from milk feeds

Thank you @Bubbles1st I’ll look into getting that! It’s handy to know how to prepare each food. I can’t wait to get him on the food but also nervous too because of choking 😕

AdventuresAwait · 15/01/2022 22:16

@CherLW, the book is the same book that @Bubbles1st posted! It's great. I've also got the app mentioned.
I've also added a pic of the other book that I'm about to start but definitely recommend the one by Rapley and Murkett.

The book explains about choking @CherLW and really put me at ease.

CherLW · 15/01/2022 22:19

Thanks @AdventuresAwait it’s now in my basket 😊 definitely helpful if explains about choking also! X

AdventuresAwait · 15/01/2022 22:33

@CherLW would like to hear what you think when you've read it xx

Bubbles1st · 16/01/2022 03:39

@CherLW yes like Adventure says covering chocking and it makes so much sense inc e you read it all, I'm sure you'll definitely be out at ease over it.

Scotti84 · 16/01/2022 09:33

What's the uk advice or guidance on weaning? In relation to how much food vs milk should be substituted?

AdventuresAwait · 16/01/2022 11:17

@Scotti84, I think I have information the HV gave me. I'll look when I get home and take a photo to upload xx

CherLW · 16/01/2022 11:32

@AdventuresAwait I ordered it last night so will get reading when it arrives.. just want to know as much as I can when the time comes. 😊 xx

AdventuresAwait · 16/01/2022 12:26

@Scotti84 this is what I was given:
www.nhs.uk/start4life/weaning/
I've not read it so can't comment but it was given by the Health Visitor at our 6 week appointment.

AdventuresAwait · 16/01/2022 12:28

Sorry that's a link to the information I was given in the leaflet. I downloaded the booklet but can't seem to attach it but if you Google NHS weaning start4life it can be downloaded on the Unicef website.
That's the only NHS info I have @Scotti84 xx

Scotti84 · 16/01/2022 15:11

@AdventuresAwait awesome thank you. That's really interesting. Quite different to what we get here. Our advice is between 4 and 6 months to start with pureed food, 4-6 spoons at lunch with the normal milk, then after 6 months to start with puree on the evening feed too, then after 9 months to breakfast but still just a few spoons and then slowly come away from milk and more puree. They dont suggest leaving baby to try feed herself until she's got used to different purred foods. I'll have to research a bit more into that, its not something I'd thought about too much tbh

AdventuresAwait · 16/01/2022 17:14

@Scotti84, I think the advice used to be from 4 months here too but it changed. I found it interesting to look into and it changed my thoughts.

On a different note, our little one has dry skin on her neck. We have just started swimming classes and think it makes it dry too. Anyone have a recommendation for cream that can be used on the face please?

Has anyone else started swimming classes? I know it was mentioned a while ago. We love it!

CherLW · 16/01/2022 20:33

@AdventuresAwait were thinking of at at ting swimming next month! I think Jesse would love it!!
Jesse had some dry skin on his forehead a while back and I got Weleda baby face cream.. it’s in a yellow tube. It was great and not greasy either 😊 there is a whole range of weleda that I’m going to look into as well. X

AdventuresAwait · 16/01/2022 21:43

Thanks so much @CherLW! I'll order some now.
We're loving swimming! So far, she is happy in the water and the instructor leads us through movements as well as action songs. She loves being held to float on her back too so hoping it continues!

Scotti84 · 17/01/2022 09:39

I'd love to take Lilly swimming but everything like that is still closed here, we can swim in the lakes in summer but its a bit cold for that atm 😅

@AdventuresAwait Lilly had some dry skin in her neck folds, I used nappy cream on it, worked wonders that was Weleda too. Love all the Weleda products, they smell great!

AdventuresAwait · 17/01/2022 10:18

Thanks @Scotti84! It's arriving tomorrow so looking forward to trying it.

Re. Swimming, things are open but you have to book in advance and numbers are limited. I was lucky a place became available as soon as she turned 4 months!

Bubbles1st · 17/01/2022 19:42

@AdventuresAwait we hire a private pool once a fortnight and having fun family time. We aren't having actual lessons at the moment but there is a lot of good videos on YouTube and we are implementing the positions and advice.

Unfortunately I feel too uncomfortable to swim publicly at the moment which I know is sad but we are loving the 3 of us and are on a health kick so we can keep up with a toddler when the time comes. Depending on how we get in with the swimming ourselves we might do something once he turns 1 with a class.

I'm sad at the moment that due to Covid we are not not attending sessions at our local Childrens centre. It's open and the timetable is running but I just feel like it's an unnecessary risk to attend (it's in school grounds) and don't want him to be in a room full of adults in masks.

Is anyone else restricting what they attend or making the most of what you can whilst they are this age?

AdventuresAwait · 17/01/2022 20:13

The private pool sounds lovely @Bubbles1st & a great way to build confidence in the water.

Re. Groups etc... our children centre isn't running groups at the moment. They are online or referral only. So cannot attend anything there and I don't fancy a music group via Zoom.

We do the swimming and a parent & toddler group but that's all. I've done an online baby massage course so do that at home & have some cds from a children's music group that we do at home too. So only 2 groups. There's one other I'm interested in - a sensory play group - but it's hard for me to get there as I don't drive so might save that until she's a bit older.
