@Rach921 is the pain just when he latches/your let down or for the whole feed?
In the early days, it causes your uterus to contract, so can cause contraction type pains... and my nipples hurt like hell when she latched on as they weren't used to being used that much! With my first, she had a tongue tie that wasn't cut til 6 weeks, which affected her latch and caused my nipples to be "traumatised". It was agony. WIth my second, they were just in shock, so latching hurt like heck for the first week...
I would say if the pain eases after latch, it's ok. If it continues, don't be afraid to take baby off and re-latch. Also, try some different positions - the rugby hold (baby under your armpit kind of) helped me a lot on my worst side.
Don't be afraid to look up a breastfeeding clinic and get their help - your journey will be so much better without the pain. I used to hook my feet under the table to stop myself kicking out when she latched... and I dreamed of buying formula. But we got it sorted and breastfed exclusively for a year. There is nothing better than getting someone to watch you feed and confirm if the latch etc is good or if anything can help improve it.

Kirky658 · 06/10/2021 23:18

@squibble84 @crobo87 I hope your babies are OK ❤️

Alice has had her vaccinations today and is a bit under the weather, she just won't settle unless she's in our arms so looks like a night of zero sleep for me!

FTEngineerM · 07/10/2021 03:33

Does anyone else’s little one just seem absolutely raging? I can’t remember it being like this. I don’t know if that’s because it didn’t happen or that I’ve blanked it from my memory with DS1.

Dylan is either asleep, feeding or raging crying and it’s really starting to get to us now. He arches his back, screams as if in agony, farts and burps. So we try all the usual stuff to get a burn out and it’s usually successful but he doesn’t stop crying. He gets some relief after a poop but not long.

If he falls asleep after about 2-3 minutes he’s waking up screaming and arching his back again. But others he sleeps solid like a log for 3 hours straight.

@FTEngineerM mine is very similar. He's stopped sleeping in the day apart from a few short naps if he's on me after a feed. So I now have no time to catch up after also having bad nights. I'm getting about 2-3 hours a night. He has been awake since 2am this morning and I'm shattered. He doesn't usually cry unless he needs a nappy change. He feeds well but I often feel this is the only way to comfort him after the screaming when I try and put him back in the Moses basket or change his nappy. He's a month today and google/everyone else suggests it's a growth spurt.

MrsTD88 · 07/10/2021 15:03

@FTEngineerM Orlaith is the same, she goes from 0-60 in the blink of an eye. So impatient for her feed too! Last night was better, I napped from 9 to 12 and then she fed and slept until 3.30, fed and got up again at 7am but it's by no means consistent yet

Mamabearwhere · 07/10/2021 15:29

@FTEngineerM sounds very similar to my second baby. She was always raging, inconsolable and seemed in agony. I remember it so clearly even though it was 5 years ago now. Anyway it turned out she had silent reflux. She was eventually put on baby gaviscon which helped a bit then into something a bit stronger but for the life of me can’t remember what it was called but your doctor should be able to prescribe something. In the meantime try keeping him upright for as long as possible after feeds. If you’re bf look at your diet as I was told to cut out dairy. If formula feeding you could look at alternative brands, there are some for reflux I think aptamil have one. I know it’s really tough right now so do push for help from your doctor and don’t take no for an answer. I was made to feel like I was being melodramatic and that my daughter was a “normal newborn who cries” and had to fight them for medication. Xx

Mamabearwhere · 07/10/2021 15:32

@FTEngineerM just remembered medicine was Ranitidine! Was a god send for us!

Squibble84 · 07/10/2021 15:40

@FTEngineerM if you’re breastfeeding, maybe cut out dairy for a few weeks to see if he improves, that sounds similar to the dairy allergy symptoms my DD1 had, it’s hard!

SillyBry · 07/10/2021 17:16

@FTEngineerM Rosie is 4 weeks on Saturday and she’s got serious separation anxiety for the last few days. If shes awake, she wants boob. And god forbid I put her down to go to the loo, pour a drink etc! She’s fine to be put down to sleep… but if she’s awake, she wants me - and feeding - and got a mega scream for the moments I put her down!! I’m sure it’ll pass… that’s what I tell myself. But it’s been challenging this week with my
Eldest off with a stomach bug. She’s needed help and cleaning up snd Rosie has just had to be put down to cry so I can sort out sicky sheets etc. Not ideal, but what can you do?! 🤷🏻‍♀️

crobo87 · 07/10/2021 17:30

@Mamabearwhere they don't do ranitidine anymore, it's been pulled from the market.

We are struggling with silent reflux here too. We are starting on gaviscon today, does anyone know if you can switch to an anti reflux milk and use gaviscon? I'm seeing the HV tomorrow anyway so will ask her.
Praying the gaviscon helps as today has been rough....he just won't settle, especially when laid down.

Mamabearwhere · 07/10/2021 17:49

@crobo87 oh had no idea! Thanks for letting us know x

unicornpower · 07/10/2021 18:53

@FTEngineerM def try cutting out dairy? I have done which has massively helped our colic situation and even though she has her moments she’s nowhere near as screams as she was. Although I feel like screaming as I want butter and cream 😂

Squibble84 · 07/10/2021 19:32

@SillyBry that’s been one of my biggest struggles, going from being a parent of one to two and trying to balance both their needs! I feel like I failed on that count quite a few times already!

SillyBry · 07/10/2021 20:02

@Squibble84 it’s so tough isn’t it! I’ve just had to let Rosie cry as poor Naomi has been throwing up and sobbing her tummy hurts 😢😢
But equally, I’m so lucky that Naomi is old enough to help out by grabbing things or lying with Rosie/singing to her whilst I have a wee/get dressed etc and does vaguely understand that sometimes I can’t do what she wants.
But it’s so tough… I don’t want to always say no to her!

FTEngineerM · 07/10/2021 20:20

Thanks ladies ❤️
DS1 had CMPA and even after 6weeks of avoiding dairy and soya it was still affecting him through my breast milk so I don’t know what that’s about but if it was I’d just have to switch to formula, not ideal I’m enjoying the relaxing that comes with BFing at the minute.

I’ve failed on that front too @Squibble84 and @SillyBry 😩 I’ve also realised that I was a bit OTT with DS1, like when I go in in the night to settle him and leave the baby in our room crying the baby is fine by the time I get back a few minutes later.

Hi all does anyone's baby grunt/snort/groan when on their back? Could it be a sign of reflux? Dd is 17 days old and has done it from day 1 but I think it's getting worse. So frustrating, she'll be fast asleep on me and as soon as I lay her on her back everything about her starts moving and the grunting escalates until she eventually lets out a cry. But she can lie there awake grunting loudly for a whole hour without crying too. It's loud and exhausting to watch, poor girl, but equally she doesn't seem that bothered or in pain as she barely cries?

Just wondering if it's a normal baby thing or if I should be looking for a cause. It does sometimes precede a poo but not always
Thanks!

CherLW · 08/10/2021 00:03

VERY fussy baby this week!! Jesse is 6 weeks today.. I follow an app about leaps/milestones and it predicts he’s in the middle of one! He wants to be with me all the time (which I love, but it’s hard) he wants to feed all the time, crying when I put him down… any one got any experience with babies milestones?

CherLW · 08/10/2021 00:05

He’s also still got bad wind and struggles/screams to get a fart out and it breaks my heart, he looks like he’s in agony! I tell anyone who will listen at appointments/groups but all say it’s normal

Scotti84 · 08/10/2021 04:42

@Sophieandtiger yep Lilly has been doing that a lot this week, i think she is a bit congested, thought it was reflux but DH has got a cold so im thinking thats more likely. Ive put a blanket under her mattress to prop her up a bit, Google is 50/50 either saying do it because it helps or dont do it because it risks her airways being blocked. Having said that, it seems worse at night, through the day she sleeps flat on her back and is silent... so who knows!

@CherLW feel for you with the wind, they look so in pain sometimes don't they! Cant wait til that phase passes

AdventuresAwait · 08/10/2021 07:46

Hi @CherLW, no experience of milestones... yet! But I was wondering about the app you use? I have the Wonder Weeks app for leaps - is there another one that you find useful? Just wondered as I love reading about baby's development etc. I really like the Baby Buddy app too xx

FTEngineerM · 08/10/2021 08:04

@CherLW is it the wonder weeks app? We swore by that with our first and are using it on our second now too. Essentially they’re a bit scared because they can see/feel more and aren’t sure how to cope with it so want you there as a bit of grounding.. do you have a sling carrier type thing?

DS1 is due leap 1 in 6 days and DS2 is due leap 10 in 9 days, pray for me 😂.

OP posts:
CherLW · 08/10/2021 09:02

@AdventuresAwait I use the wonder weeks app too and I keep meaning to get the buddy app. I think we are definitely mid leap as he ticks all the boxes!

@FTEngineerM that makes sense, so much must be changing for him. I’ve got a sling which I’ve put him in a couple of times, I’ll have to start using that more as want him to feel safe.

Oh goodness, 2 going into their leaps at the same time-ish!! Thinking of you!!

CherLW · 08/10/2021 09:03

@AdventuresAwait if you find anymore apps or anything about their development I would be interested to know as I love reading up on their development too 🥰 xx

AdventuresAwait · 08/10/2021 09:29

It's a good one isn't it @CherLW. It says Hettie has her first leap in 2 days! I would recommend the Baby Buddy app as I like the daily information. I'll let you know if I find any more. Their development is amazing, it's so fascinating! Xx

Kirky658 · 08/10/2021 10:52

@cherlw Alice was the same for a good 2 weeks, luckily she has settled now! I'm surprised she is following the right trajectory tbh as she was preemie!
