Hi Flossam (and everybody else - where are you?!)

I have been lurking on this thread for ages waiting to see if anyone had any moree news.

DS is teething too, its like he can't get his fist far enough into his mouth! Has coincided with him having a really bad cold. Every morning he wakes up his face covered in snot (bless!) and I thik it has infected his eyesnow as they have been very gloopy for a couple of days now.

As well as the cold / high temp, he also had a rash all over his back and neck which I thought could be german measals as the baby next door had it a couple of weeks ago. When I took DS to the docs last thurs the doc said it was excezme (sp) which I was very superised about and so ignored the doc. Am sure its not excezma, he has it on the backs of his knees but this was def a rash, like little whitehead spots.

At least DS has started to sleep a bit better now (after what must have been a 4 month growth spurt), only waking 1-2 times a night, with a couple of nights where he has slept through (althoughn then DD waakes up - sods law).

Flossam - went to Bristol Zoo today - weather was fab! Love Clifton so much.

Hope everyone else is ok.

x

bunny2 · 28/03/2005 21:36

Hellooo

I used to live in Clifton - one of my favourite places.
M2E, could it be a heat rash? If it is on ds' back, maybe he gets hot when lying down. ... just a thought. Dd had some patches of dry red skin and the gp waid it was eczema - a liberal coating of Doublebase and it was gone within a few days.

Dd is just the most smiley gorgeous thing . She is so easy and laid-back, just as well as ds is terrorising her at any given opportunity. He wants her to go and live with another family!. No signs of any teeth yet but she is chewing her little fist as hard as she can.

gingernut · 28/03/2005 21:40

Hi girls! I'm here too. Hope everyone's well. Haven't posted for ages but things have settled down a lot, ds2 is a happy, contented boy now and is sleeping pretty well. Going through a rough patch these last few days though and not sure what the problem is - maybe teeth as he's drooling and one of the middle incisors at the bottom looks very close to the surface. Riebee - my ds2 is very petite compared with your ds3! I weighed him last week and he was 14lb 5.5 oz, about the same as ds1 was at the same age despite the fact ds2 was getting on for 1lb bigger at birth! strange isn't it! ds1 is getting more interested in his brother now which is lovely, and ds2 is fascinated by ds1's antics...it's so sweet .

M2E, that doesn't sound like eczema to me either, although there are different types. Google has lots of images of eczema which you could look at. How is your brother (the one with ulcerative colitis?). My FIL has had a bit of a flare up recently. He's been told to increase his dose of mesalazine (?) but don't know if this will be enough .

Mum2Ela · 28/03/2005 21:50

Bunny its funny you mention heat rash, he is a very sweaty baby (as DD is)so it could well be. It is still there slightly which kind of disproves my german measals theory, though I was a bit annoyed with the doc not to even take his temp or check whether his glands were up.

Gingernut - smap about the colitis flare-up. My brother, being only 17, I don't hink really understands that he needs to eat properly now and start looking after himself, he hasn't been very good recently. He is now taking pro and prebiotics (I have told him he must and have given him a pot of prebiotic powder to take with his probiotics) and I think he has another hospital appt soon. He hasn't been taking his tablets either

Flossam · 29/03/2005 09:43

Riebee I didn't know you lived there! Maybe if I ever get back there we could have a meet up, maybe you could make the trip over the river too Mum2 Ela! DS is currently trying to get my whole arm iu=n his mouth so I'll keep this short - but - this is going to ruin any chance for a repeat tonight, I know, but, he slept from 7pm to 7.30 am last night! One happy mummy today, although I woke at six convinced he would wake up any moment, and couldn't get back to sleep m,yself!

eidsvold · 29/03/2005 11:35

well dd2 is putting along nicel - lot sof rolling over, pushing herself right up - on her hands and knees sometimes. Her little personality is starting to emerge - she is full of smiles and chuckles as well as the odd shout!! WHich gave me a fright the first time she did it.

collision · 29/03/2005 16:47

Hello! Havent posted for ages.

Started ds2 on solids on Sunday and he wolfed them down. Just baby rice but he loved it. He fed again at 11pm and slept through til 6am which is good for him. I thought I was on to a winner but last night he woke at 4am with a stinky nappy so will try again tonight. He had carrot today which he gobbled up so I dont think we will have many weaning problems!! He is 19 weeks today.

He rolled over for the first time and was so shocked that he burst into tears. He is so lovely and a real Mummy's boy as he follows me with his eyes round the room. I am going to spoil him I think so I might have to toughen up as he gets older. He is a real cutie.

That is it really. Weaning has started and I cannot believe how quickly the last few weeks have gone since he was born.

Riebee · 29/03/2005 19:14

hey flossam you never know we might meet up one day!
Ds is in bed fast asleep drugged up with medised for his teeth, apparently it can make them sleepy A tooth has just got to come soon he is chomping on anything he can get his little hands on, if you stand still too long you are chomped and covered in drool....luurvley.
Dh is away at the moment so thinking about going to bed same time as my other ds's to catch up on some sleep.... I'm a bit bored as well and there is a creme egg calling me from the kitchen cupboard, I am trying to be good but don't know how much longer I can resist. Hows everyone doing in the weight department?

OP posts:
Mum2Ela · 29/03/2005 21:45

Have been back into my skinny jeans for a while - yay!. But its only down to good old fashioned exercise unfortunately, but hopefully soon will be more toned than ever as I am doing 2 circuit traning classes a week. Am on hols in May so wanted to be able to wear all my old summer stuff and bikinis (although none of my bikini tops fit due to breastfeeding boobs ;) )

Neede to ask you all a question but I can't remember what it is! Will have a think and come back.

Ooh, have remembered: before they are weaned does breatsfed babies poo stay really runny? I thought it didbut every time mil looks after ds and he poos she tells me he has dioreria (sp) but his poo is always like that,.

eidsvold · 29/03/2005 22:00

mum2ela - dd2's poo is still runny - she is breastfed.

Wow - I am not even thinking about weaning dd2 yet - although she is 19 weeks. Glad to read it is going well.

I am lighter than I was before I got pregnant with dd2 although still have a lot of weight to lose. AM doing weightwatchers which is helpful - even down to new ideas for recipes etc. Had lost 2 stone before I got pregnant with dd2. WHen I went back to ww when she was about 6 weeks old - I had only put on about 8 pounds between last weigh in at about 10 weeks pregnant. I have since lost another stone!! NOt sure I have lost this week - choccy eggs call is toooo strong. But am back on track now.

Flossam · 30/03/2005 00:19

Well I was being good. I suscribed to the support for the long term slimmer and not hardly any chocolate passed my lips. Then it all seemed to be going too well and my resolve weakened... But I still lost 6 pounds in about 3 weeks and am back in my old bottom halfs, top halfs too small due to the boobs but hey ho! Still was too fat to start off with though but don't feel terrible, I'm 5 9 and a size 14 but I'd ideally like to be a 12. A 10 would be lovely but I'm not that good! I love all things naughty in the food department - feeling slightly sick right now after not having much for tea but gorging afterwards on leftover easter chocalety things !

Flossam · 30/03/2005 00:21

Oh and DS's poo is runny. Got a nappy from pampers through the post the other day saying they are now in a size 3 as babies shouldn't be weaned so early- BUT- it isn't a normal size 3, only goes up to 15lbs and DS weighed in last time at 16.10lbs!

collision · 01/04/2005 12:57

ds is 16lbs and in size 5 nappies!!

collision · 02/04/2005 20:17

OK ladies.....I need help!!

DS2 will be 20 weeks on Tues. I started him on solids last Sunday and he has taken to them like a duck to water. But he is still not sleeping more than 4 or 5 hours.

For example, yesterday he had cereal for breakfast and spinach at about 4pm. At 7pm he had a full bottle of EBM (8oz) and went to bed. He woke at 11.30pm and had another 6oz bottle. He woke again at 2.30am and had a breast feed and again at 6am and had another breast feed!!!

Good Grief!!!! He is gonna be a porker at this rate. I honestly thought he would sleep through last night and was gutted when he didnt.

Today he had a nap from 9.30 til 11.30 (after a cereal breakfast) Had a BF and a nap from 3-5pm and then spinach and babyrice at 6pm. Another bottle of about 3oz and was in bed by 7.30pm.

Any ideas??????? I need him to sleep longer than 4 hours at night. It is killing me.

Flossam · 04/04/2005 13:26

Collision, only just seen this, sorry you are having a tough time. I don't really have any advice, the only thing I can think of is that in early weaning babies are just experiencing tastes, and the food does not have much calorific value. I hope things get better for you soon. x

eidsvold · 04/04/2005 14:53

We had an interrupted night the other night having to take dd1 to A and E in the middle of the night... much to dd2's delight ( she is 4 1/2 months old) SInce then she is reluctant to go back to sleep when she has her ten o'clock feed - she starts babbling and smiling and is up for a party. I am the one who gets stick with partying along as dh is sound asleep along with dd1.

At the moment it is almost midnight and she is sitting here next to me in her activity chair babbling, giggling and periodically inspecting her dummy - wide eyed and clearly no intention of going to sleep... oh man this better change I am too old for lack of sleep

she goes down at about 6 pm and wakes between 9 and 10 and was going back to sleep and waking about 5 am....

so you are not alone collision - I have not weaned dd2 yet though.

Mum2Ela · 04/04/2005 15:21

Collision I can sympathise. DS is still waking 3 times a noght to feed (he is not weaned yet), and I can only echo what Flossam said, the food won't do a great deal calorie-wise.

Saying that, am going to start weaning DS tomorrow (bad mummy). He is 22 weeks tomorrow. I took him to be weighed today and he has dropped on the scale, weighing in at 14lb 1oz. Am going to start him on a bit of veg for a couple of weeks.

Tell me I am not a bad mummy!

webmum · 04/04/2005 15:30

Hi everyone

we're just back from 10 fabulous days in Dubai where we visited friends, and I cant believe the weather is so awful today....

Dd2 is growing fast and is again feeding only once per nighr, soemtimes not even that, but I don't want toe xpect too much as we only got back yesterday, and it might just be that she was getting very tired on holiday!
Anyway her weight gain is abck on track, and she is still fully breastfed at almost 21 weeks! CAn hardly believe it myself! I'm thinking of starting weaning her next week though as she seems to get distracted very easi8ly from the breast to look around!

She isnt rolling over yet (is she the only one in this group?), she seems so placid and content, only just started ploaying with rattles and similar toys....but she's adorable and she loves her older sister who gets the most incredible laughs!

I only got back in my jeans a couple of weeks ago, just in time for my holidays, but my tops are still a no no, I'm still 4 cup sizes bigger than I was this time last year!!

Flossam · 04/04/2005 15:45

Mum2Ela, no of course your not a bad mummy! It wasn't that long ago they said to wean at 4 months, was it? So if their theories are right then you have given her another 6 weeks benefit! I will probably try in about 3 weeks, when DS is 23 weeks. Just so I stand a better chance of having him weaned for when I have to go back to work. Although of course DS may decided otherwise! I feel like that I have made it to 5 months now, so the pressure is off a little bit IYSWIM. I have been using crushed ice to feed him from a spoon which helps his gums I think.

Eidsvold, I hope DD1 is ok.DD2 sounds so sweet, even though she is making one tired mummy! I hope things get back on track for you a bit more now. DS is sleeping better, he usually goes at least one 8 hour stretch a night!

Webmum, DS does roll over, but I don't think he has worked out the mechanics, he is always surprised by how he has got there! He has only done it a few times. He is able to sit up for a few moments on his own whilst he stares at his feet, and will really reach for objects, often resulting in him falling head first! He loves having his clothes taken off, that is garenteed a giggle, and he is always in a better mood come evening time than any other time of the day!

eidsvold · 04/04/2005 22:37

thanks for asking flossam - just a nasty bout of croup that the paramedics thought should be checked out. Can't remember last time dh and I were up that late They gave her some steroids orally to stop the inflammation in her throat and then gave us another dose to give her the next night.

Well last night I got about 5 hours sleep in total - after I finally got dd2 to go to sleep, dd1 wakes up and thinks it is play time. I also think she wanted to come into our bed ( she spent two nights in there when she was not well) So at 1 am I am trying to settle her only to have dd2 wake at 5 for her usual feed ... they are both asleep again now and I am going back to bed to see if I can get some more sleep.

Mum2Ela · 05/04/2005 09:40

eidsvold - poor your DD. I always worry about croup as its not comething I have encountered and worry I won't know what it is IYSWIM.

Webmum DS is rolling over ad can also roll back, but more often than not just gets cross after a short time on his belly. He is really strong, so much stronger than DD at this age, and can sit unaided for a little bit, just needs balance now!

It seems like DD and DS have been poorly for ages now. I think they just keep passing it back and forth to each other and are both consantly snotty, have to keep DD's tissue in one pocket and DS's in the other ( am probably wiping their noses with the other's tissue which is why they are still poorly - ho hum!).

Hey Webmum, tell me all about Dubai. We are going in July (without the children . . . .). Where did you stay?

On that topic, does anyone think that I would be able to continue b'feeding DS if I was away from him for 5 days, if I expressed regularly? He would be nearly 9 mths then.

x

collision · 07/04/2005 22:54

Mum2Ela....you could def BF for the days you are away. Start expressing now as it will build your milk up and start freezing it soon. He will be on solids then and need less milk. What I wouldnt give for 5 days alone with DH!!

DS is fab with the solids and eats loads. He is 20 weeks and the way he eats it is as though he was saying, 'why didnt you give me this sooner? It is great!!' He has had carrot, peas, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, apple, pear, banana, cereals for breakfast and he is growing so quickly.

But still not sleeping through the night!! GRRR.

webmum · 08/04/2005 11:44

looks like dd2 is the only one not rolling over here . She lost a little weight in the past 2 weeks (just 20grs, but she should have put it on, not lost it!!). She is on only 4 feeds a day now.

The HV wants me to add a bottle, I'm not sure what to do: start weaning, introduce formula, or just ignore the growth charts???? She seems to develop ok, she smiles, sleeps well, feeds well, plays with rattles and things now.....what would you do???

Mum2Ela

we stayed with friends, so cant give u any tips on that front, but we were very close to the Jumeirah Beach hotel and teh beach nearby which was absolutely great, the most transparent water I've ever seen!!

One place you have to go to is teh Medinat, it's a huge complex of shops and restaurants and hotels built on the beach, we went to dinner there once, on the beach, and had coffee lying on a carpet (arabian style), it was so decadent and romantic, I think the name of the restaurant was Shimmers. We also smoked Shisha there, it doesn't contain tobacco, its fruit, our friends said we HAD to try it, and it was quite good, something to do at least once in your life. Also go to the desert at least once.

Be prepared for the heat, July will be scorching out there.

Mum2Ela · 09/04/2005 21:59

Well I started DS on solids last tuesday and his sleeping and become almost instantly better, which I didnt expect it to do at all. He gulped down his first meal and so by day 2 he was and is still having 2 meals, lunch and dinner. His absolute favourite is banana and eats a whole one for lunch, and he really doesn't mind it with lumps in which is good. DD used to gag on the tiniest lump! He has now had carrot, banana, avocado and sweet potato and I think I will leave it to just these until the batches I have made of the carrot and sweet potato have gone.

Collision - thanks for the advice. We are gping to Cyprus in May so I think when we get back from there I will organise myself and express every morning to build up my supply and the freezer supply! Am hoping to still be b-feeding in July, its my aim, but sometimes I just feel like packing it in. DS is so wriggly when he feeds and if we are out pulls away, showing my boobs to the world - so much about discreet! Also, fed up of all my top going baggy from being constantly pulled up, but thats no reason to stop!

Webmum, I would be inclined to ignore the charts , although I know thats hard to do. How much does she weigh now out of interest? DS is 14lb 13oz (23 wks tues). Why don't you try offering her your boob a bit more often? She may take it if its offered even if she isn't starving hungry iyswim. I wouldn't give her a bottle if you don't want to, don't really think its necessary.

Thanks for the info on Dubai. Whats so good about Shisha? Does it get you stoned? ;)

Buddhamummy · 09/04/2005 22:15

Hi Webmum, Dd isn't rolling over yet either! must confess i haven't even been aware that she should be so consumed am i at the moment with getting her to drink from something other than my breast!

In regards as to whether you should wean or not, friend of mine had an interesting experience the other day when she took her Dd also 19 weeks to the doctors due to concerns with weight gain. HV said add formula and not to wean and doctor said she should wean and not bother with formula! When she told the doc about conflicting opinions he said that it was to be expected as there is no right answer! i felt quite relieved about this as my Dd too is very happy, content etc and i have no real routine with BF or weaning at the moment.
