Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

hi - just logging on while I wait for my hair dye to work its magic!! Hope everyone well and enjoying the weekend.

A quick poll - does anyone put toys in their LO's cot? We have a few in Little O's cot (a whoozit spiral thing, a picture board that ties to the sides etc). Do you think this helps or hinders longer sleep i.e. O has been waking about 6am for a while now. Might it be because she rouses, sees her toys and then wants to start playing, or are they keeping her occupied when she would otherwise be crying for attention. I might try stripping the cot bare tomorrow night.....

Jennster · 12/01/2008 20:38

Hi Catstar, we have no toys because ds scoots about and pull things over his face.

Justabout, we've tried ds in a highchair with food in front of him but he really isn't interested. Not really able to pick stuff up properly or sit up properly yet so can't see us starting food a week on monday. Just going to carry on feeding on demand I think. DS does go down for naps and settles himself easily and does wake a few times in the night, but when he cries long enough to wake me up then I know he needs a feed....I can see this happening more and more. He still has a very strong tongue thrust reflex too so no point shoveling stuff into him, although I am VERY tempted.

Got my ultrasound appointment this morning and it's on the day we are due to meet JAM so will rearrange it. I'm now convinced it was just a blocked duct now. 10 days after I found it, I suddenly got unusually full just in the section of my breast where the lump was, and after that the lump disappeared. I can feel it again, but it is def. smaller.

Had my first peer supporter 'lesson' for the BfN on Wednesday. Loads of stuff to read. Think I'm going to enjoy it.

Naaa I'd rather not go on a day when I have to drag 2 children along. {grin] Am going to rearrang it anyway honestly. Like I said I'm convinced it was just a blocked duct so no urgency.

Myfairone · 12/01/2008 22:56

Evening all,
Just had time to do some catching up! Not sure where all my time goes these days!!!

Jennster, good luck with the ultrasound, keeping my fingers crossed for you that its a blocked duct.

Okay heres a question for all those still breastfeeding. I have started to give LO purees and he is still bf as usual. I go back to work in April and think it may be time to start to wean him off (feeling very emotional about it though). ANyone got any tips on how to start? And what kind of formula should I be giving him? Is it the follow on stuff or the regular?
HV keep telling me he's not putting on enough weight but he has never been a huge gainer anyway...currently 6 months and weighs 14lb.

HOpe you are all well and feeling fine.
Big hugs

pulapula · 12/01/2008 23:21

MFO,

Does LO take a bottle of EMB already or will it be new to him? If he hasn't taken a bottle yet, then it may be better just to try with a cup? I suggest you introduce the formula one feed at a time so that you don't get engorged? With my DD I gradually made the move from BF to formula over the space of a month although as she was so fussy on the breast, I was actually expressing whatever milk I could, and using formula the rest of the time.

In terms of which formula, I think you just choose a brand (the one we were going to choose is the one they use at nursery which is handy!) and then I guess its whichever milk is suitable for their age. It'll say on the tin.

bubble78 · 12/01/2008 23:41

well ladies how are we all cant believe its 6 months on and i only just got round to adding new pics on here ( hope you like them)
how is every one doing lydia doing great
hope everyone ok
xx

meep · 13/01/2008 09:47

Morning all and hi to the people I haven't "met" before!
Bubble - gorgeous pics - Lydia is the image of you!
Catstar we didn't have any toys in minmeeps cot - first time mum fear of her suffocating on one of them when she was little! I now have one toy tied to the bars and she does enjoy bashing it about, so that it has been removed if the bashing starts too early in the morning! When we (eventually) move her into her own room I think I will give her a few more to keep her occupied when she wakes up.
theprecious - really glad that your ds has managed to settle himself - it is great when they learn how to do that - makes for a much easier life for you and him
Unfortunately we weren't able to breastfeed past 3 weeks (long story - I think I am only really coming to terms with it now - there have been a lot of tears!) and minimeep has been on the Eastenders favourite SMA Gold!!! It is suitable from birth upwards so I think that is why we chose it. Myfairone, I think you just have to try one and change if it doesn't agree with your ds. We've been lucky as we've had no problems.
Hope everyone's tummy bugs have settled down - yuck to the stinky nappies Jennster.
We had a bit of a drama last night - had to take minimeep into hospital last night after phoning nhs direct. She was breathing really rapidly - almost hyperventilating. It was bad enough that my dh got worried! But she's been checked and all seems to be fine - we just have to keep a close eye on her. Very scary.
Jennster fingers crossed for your scan.

Jennster · 13/01/2008 11:07

Gosh hope minimeep is ok meep. Very scary.

Well as for stinky poos, we got one on the potty! Going to train in ernest after Easter, when we are away for a week, and I've finished the peer training, so we can do a full week with me at home with her, bicarb and kitchen roll on standby.

Princesspowersparkle · 13/01/2008 20:48

Poor minimeep. Glad all seems to be OK though.

Bubble- lovely pics!

RE BF: I've been getting periods all the way through as usual . Was so disappointed!
I am going to try and wean off breast now too. I always said that I'd stop at 6 months or when DD had teeth, whichever was soonest. Not sure how I'm going to do it though. She takes a bottle ok so I think I just have to do it when she wakes in the morning and is really hungry or something I suppose.

MFO- Seren is still only little too (13lb 7) and I started weaning her at 17 weeks. As long as they are following their 'line' it must be ok. Quite cute as 3-6 month clothes only just starting to fit her properly!

Jennster · 13/01/2008 22:13

Earnest even

I've not had a period since April 05 Hurray. Although saying something like that makes it happen hope not!

I've just cleared 12-18 month vests out of dd's drawer because she's wearing 'grown up' vests without poppers at the crotch, and they fit ds perfectly! He's not even in a real (bulky) nappy right now!

theprecious · 14/01/2008 06:51

myfairone, I made up a bottle of formula and just let ds chew on it, to get him used to it. When he was fed up I took it away. I did this about 5-6 times in total, during the day. By the third day he was taking from the bottle and has been fine ever since.

In terms of brand we just chop and change depending on what is there. He doesn't seem to mind at all.

Rah! - Night before last ds slept from 7.30 - 6am! Last night he did 8pm-5.30am. He went back down at 5.30am but woke again at 6 so I got up with him. I used to do early starts at work so don't mind too much. Hopefully dp will give me an hours nap when he wakes up at 7.

Happy birthday PP

meep - hope you are all OK now.

twoplusone · 14/01/2008 10:12

jennster- good luck with the scan.. when dd was a baby I had to go and get checked just to be on the safe side and it was blocked milk ducts.

Hope everyone is ok..

I have the work men in re doing my cellar walls, very noisy.. drilling all day today.. suprised Lee has stayed asleep throught he drills and the dog barking at the men and the drills..lol.. They are going to be here for three days. Dh should find out his dates for going today.. he is defo flying to Afghan oin the 8th but not sure where from.. if the uk then he has to go on about the 4th.. if germany then he can go on the 8th not looking forward to it at all.. we are going to miss him like mad.

twoplusone · 14/01/2008 10:13

Bubble- Lydia is so much like you. Gorgeous pics..

Myfairone · 14/01/2008 10:56

Thanks for the tips on getting LO to take a bottle. I have been letting him play around with a cup which he seems to like so maybe he can go straight to that.

I feel so tired today and lo is full of beans..typical!

Twoplusone, I'm sorry to hear your DH is off again...seems like only yesterday that he came back! Thinking of you.

Just woken ds up from a nap and found him on his tummy for the second time. I think he's found his preferred sleeping position. He's not keen on lying on his back now anyway since he's been rolling. Still nowhere near being able to sit up unsupported and he's 6 months next week!

Jennster · 14/01/2008 12:27

Yes dd 2 on thursday, not ds!

Hi all, haven't had a moment to post all weekend as dh took over the computer for 2 days.... However, not much news from my neck of the woods. Just been catching up with housework really Although I went to town on my own yesterday while dh took over ds so that was great!

meep - to hear about minimeep! Did they admit her to hospital? That must have been very scary for you all... and I'm sure that's not what you'd had in mind for your saturday night! Hope she is better now.

catstar - We have toys at the very top of the cot, but it is actually a cot-bed, so they are miles away from him by the time you've done the feet-to-foot thing. When he was in his crib we didn't have any toys in beside him.

Hi to bubble + justabout

twoplusone - How long is your dh off for? Hope not too long. Poor you.

Can I just ask if any of you are starting to use cups, what kind are you using? Would like your opinions!

Bye for now, hope to pop back later!

Myfairone · 14/01/2008 15:09

Meep just read about your experience...hope your all okay..how scary!

Pinkpussycat - I bought a tommy tippy with the two handles at the side. LO seems to be taking to it quite well.

Is everyone cooking their own food for LO's? I feel kind of guilty but don't seem to have the time so have been using jars. His favourite is the sweet potato (which tastes disgusting! In my opinion that is!)

big hugs all

PinkPussyCat · 14/01/2008 15:34

Hi MFO

Is that one of those cups that don't leak? (sorry bit clueless)
We haven't started weaning yet but going to try this weekend with some porridge!
Have got some mashed sweet potato and butternut squash in the freezer. I just saved some when I was cooking it anyway, Obv before seasoning! Just bunged it in the freezer, no hassle. I bet he hates it!
I've got kind of mixed feelings about the whole weaning thing, both looking forward to it and dreading it at the same time.

twoplusone · 14/01/2008 18:26

PPC- DH is of for 6 months.. due back the 21st august.. Hopefully will get home for 2wks inbetween..

MFO- I use Jars and home food.. only give him fresh homecooking dont freeze..(purely because i cant get them out of ice cube trays and havent got any little tubs or feeding jars to put one meal into at a time)

Started Lee on fromage frais yesterday.. he loves them.. his little face really lit up bless him.. of for a nap now as he has been sleeping alot today so I think he is going to be awake loads tonight.....
