you choose - for you or for your bubba

I can't believe the May thread is so excited that their babies are arriving. That time in our lives seems like soooooo long ago .

Diva, life with many kids is so fraught always. Why is Elsie not drinking much? Is she poorly ?

divastrop · 16/06/2007 12:01

kitty-i dont know if shes teething or ill or what.she will take some milke if i feed her in her chair but if i try to hold her she just squirms and screams.

i couldnt wake up this morning.yet another night of broken sleep (Elsie woke at 4.30 for a feed then only had 2oz)and i feel shaky and light headed.dont know if its a side effect of the increased prozac or what.i started a thread about it but have only had one reply.

i showed dd1 the dress to ask her opinion.she said 'i think its nice, but what would nanny say ?'thats not right, that my 8 year old daughter is worrying what my mum thinks.

Mossy · 16/06/2007 16:05

Afternoon all,

Just popping in today, been a bit of a busy weekend!

Went to breastfeeding clinic on Friday morning and the lady there was the best I've seen so far, showed me how to do the rugby hold properly, Bertie is still miserable but I've only been doing it for a day so we'll have to see.

Ooh she gave me lots of latch tips too... Sorry sorry I know I shouldn't say that word! Also got him checked for tongue tie (he doesn't have it) although a woman there whose son did have tongue tie said Bertie exhibits exactly the same symptoms.

Jay so nice to see you back, by the way what is silent reflux?

Diva at your dd being bothered what your Mum thinks! You don't think she's been whispering in her little ear do you?

Get all of you with the hefty boys. Bertie only put on 2 oz last week, so he's still just over 10lb. Still, it means I don't have to buy any new clothes just yet... every cloud, and all that!

Kitty so glad Ronnie had a decent nap. He looks so grown up in your photos, I can't believe he's only Bertie's age!! Do you think he could have a little word with Bertie, get him to put on some more weight and start napping?

Evenhope every mums and babies group I've been to has been nearly all boys!

Dolly hope you have a great time in Italy - you could do with a lovely break!

Everyone else... I hope you're all doing well.

Hey Doctor Who tonight looks like it could be a goodun!!

Shrinkinglily · 16/06/2007 17:57

ooh yeah, looking forward to Dr who.

CallieNewMum · 16/06/2007 20:53

Muppet, as I think I said before, I always look to Samuel to reassure myself about Jordi's weight. Figure he's breastfed and same weight roughly so all ok. Jordi's legs and tum are pretty round... I tried putting him in his Bumbo chair yesterday just to see what he thought of it and it was a struggle getting his legs in! I know it's supposed to be quite supportive so it has to be tightish but I wondered if he would get them in for a moment. He can't use it yet cos his head is still too wobbly which is a pity because he was quite happy in it, unlike the bouncer chair, which still makes him scream the house down if I try and put him in it. Why???

Mossy, be very grateful Bertie's a slow and steady gainer. You will save SO much on clothes! We got given so much stuff, and Jordi literally grew so quickly he missed some outfits completely or just got one wear out of others because I was determined to put them on him. Glad to hear you found a good bf adviser too.

Shrinky, sounds like a bad day, love you.

Diva, Jordi's been messing with his feeding too. He's taking less atm - will have 3 or 4 oz then just start chewing the teat rather than drinking any more sometimes. It's a bit worrying when it's warm as I don't want him to dehydrate. Not worried about him fading away though!

Kitty, hurrah on Ronnie's sleep. What a relief for you.

I watched Dr Who for once. Strange to see John Simm (guy who played the Master) as a baddie. I really like him, so will defo watch the next one.

foxcub · 16/06/2007 21:18

Hiya - just popping in - v busy as DH is sanding all the floors downstairs (hurrah at last) and lots of burly men keep popping in to give us quotes for laying floor tiles.

Monti latched onto my nose in Tescos!!

Mossy - if you fancy sharing any latching on tips, please do. I still often get crap latches !

spongecake · 16/06/2007 21:47

hi all, hope you all having a nice weekend. my baby normally laughs in his sleep, which i think is sweet, but today he was sleeping on me and he screwed up his face and woke himself up with misery.. it was horrible-what was he dreaming about???

he is nearly 18 lbs now, at 13 weeks, the hv said are you really only bf, as though i was sneaking him doughnuts..

have been trying to entice removal men round to give me a quote, however they don;t seem to need the money...

Mossy · 16/06/2007 22:04

Foxy - rugby hold, put Monti on a pillow with his mouth at the level of your left nip.

Then, squeeze your areola together with your left hand so it is in a horizontal line all squished together.

When he opens his mouth, even if it isn't wide, you can slip most of the the areola into his mouth that way.

Also, try (rugby hold again) when he opens his mouth, actually use your free hand to push your nip into his mouth.

And you should be able to hear him swallowing, sometimes it sounds like a gulp, but sometimes it sounds like a "ka... ka... ka..." sound.

I will be getting more tips next week though!!

Callie I suppose that's true, he is only just in 0-3 clothes!

Spongecake I keep getting told that I should give Bertie rusks and farex (pharex?) and the like... no one has mentioned donuts yet but it's only a matter of time!

OMG how good was Doctor Who? I nearly wet myself with excitement. But I knew Derek Jacobi would be the Master the second I heard that drum beat in his head, because I had heard the same drum beat on the trailer where it has Saxon tapping it out on the desk... oh I'm such a geek!

Dh was very good and sat with Bertie and a dummy the whole way through so I could watch it, I was on the edge of my seat!!!

foxcub · 16/06/2007 22:12

Mossy I'm glad Bertie's letting you watch Dr Who!!!

I've never mastered that rugby hold. I think I get the cushion in the wrong place

Sponge IKWYM about not being able to get estimates for manual work. It took me ages to find these men! It's as though no one wants work!

foxcub · 16/06/2007 22:14

Going to pour myself a well deserved spritzer!!

I have my bookclub tomorrow and I'm hosting. I bought half the food in Tescos today, then Monti started yowlog and I forgot to buy any pudding - the most important part after all! Got lots of Cava though Kitty, plus some Portugese Rose

morocco · 16/06/2007 22:16

good to catch up on your news
we've got a bumbo seat too, callie, it's so funny to see em sitting in it. my other two monopolise it though - and ds1 is almost 5!!! so they must be very stretchy seats or my kids have very skinny bums.
sorry to hear about silent reflux prob, jay, it sounds stressful, thank goodness it's finally diagnosed at least - mum's instinct is always right!
glad you've found a good bf counsellor, mossy. quite a few of my mates have had first babies lately and it seems like there are loads of bf 'counsellors' around, but most of them have no idea what they are doing judging by what my friends are getting told to do - it's such a shame. I'm always gently questioning the advice but if a 'bf counsellor' told them, then that is it, but some have only had a few hours training I think.
someone at my toddler group was saying her hv had advised rubbing brandy on her baby's gums to help with teething!! talking of bad advice!

Mossy · 16/06/2007 22:17

Foxy I could not do that rugby hold properly until I went on Friday. You can actually do it with that V shaped cushion from mothercare, just lay him down on one or the other side, on his back, with your hand underneath his head, so his neck falls in between your thumb and finger, iyswim. Then his chest supports your boob, and basically you pinch your areola togehter as described before, and drop it into his mouth.

Only trouble is, he looks you right in the eyes and if you make him laugh he smiles and you lose your latch!!!!

Mossy · 16/06/2007 22:18

X posts Morocco you are so right, some of the advice I've had from "professionals" has been dire, but if I hadn't come on here I'd never have known!

foxcub · 16/06/2007 22:21

Mossy I can imagine Bertie giggling while you try and latch him on

I've got one of those Bumbos too - I must remember to try Monti in it. DD likes sitting in it.

foxcub · 16/06/2007 22:22

I've had lots of naff advice too on BF. In fact TBH I've never realy had any good advice. I've always just resorted to that S Kitzinger book and studies all the pics of different holds etc

sazzybee · 16/06/2007 22:44

I think I was really lucky as my bf counsellor was brilliant.

I'm hoping that Elliot sleeps a bit better tonight - he woke up at 11.30 last night (I've stopped doing a dream feed as it just seems to make him wake earlier for his next feed) and would not go back to sleep - was giggling and gurgling which was very sweet but not really what you want when you're knackered. Took me till gone 1am to get him to down again

I went for a very long walk in the rain today - have realised that being stuck inside makes me a bit stir crazy

foxcub · 16/06/2007 22:54

Sazzy - I get really grumpy and crotchety when stuck in the house all day. Start getting annoyed and frustrated - more so now there are three little ones - I really have to get out just to stay sane

DS1 just woke from a nightmare poor thing. gave him some infant nurofen (he has a sore throat) and a glass of lemonade

foxcub · 16/06/2007 22:55

ps he's not normally allowed lemonade so big treat

Shrinkinglily · 17/06/2007 07:51

Thanks for all the sympathy guys, it's good to moan and get lots of support even though actually, things aren't bad really.

We all just have our ups and downs don't we?

Callie sounds like Jordi is a very discerning chap not liking his bouncy chair. It is bound to be a sign of intelligence! Hasan doesn't mind his chair but after a while in it, he starts moaning. He just loves to be carried about.

Hi Morocco you sound in good form.

Mossy/Foxy One of my other babies (it's all a blur can't remember which one!) would only feed from the left breast and fussed and wriggled at the other side. So for a while I did 'the rugby' when feeding with the right side and it did the trick
I'm sure I frequently get the latch wrong in my distracted lazines. For us it works best when we manage to retreat to my room and lie on our sides on the bed nice and relaxed and quiet.

Dr who, WOW... I had managed to get the littlies off to sleep and I was all alone (bliss) and got totally lost in it. Then it was suddenly over with a cliffhanger and I was on the edge of my seat wishing my life away til next week! I love it!

Shrinkinglily · 17/06/2007 08:12

Sazzy, hope you had a better night. I feel better when I get out for a walk too. We've been getting loads of rain here though.

TheBlonde · 17/06/2007 08:13

Happy Father's Day everyone! DH is getting 2 cards and he might get a lie in too.

We had a good night last night as DD went for 12 hours so didn't wake til just before 7am

We have put up another stairgate so DS can't wake her or us up - he is trapped

Mossy - Glad to hear you got some good info from the BFC. I can't do the rugby hold as the eye contact freaks out DD, she normally just looks at the boob

Jay - Sorry to hear about the reflux. Hope he improves with the medicine. My friend had a LO with it and it was awful - no rest for her and an unhappy baby. Hope it gets better soon

Piffle - Have you got your Bugaboo yet?

Sazzy - I have ditched the dreamfeed too as it didn't make her sleep for longer and just delayed my bedtime

Morocco - how on earth do you fit a 5 year old in a bumbo?! Wow!

Hi to evenhope, Callie, Diva, Kitty, Rosy, Fox, Sponge, Muppet, Boo, Eids, Kiwi, Dolly, Amie, Gem, Shanks, Laidback and anyone I have missed
(gosh we are a big thread aren't we)

Shrinkinglily · 17/06/2007 08:14

Might have to just go out in the rain too!

Shrinkinglily · 17/06/2007 08:25

Hi The blonde wow what a brilliant night, fantastic!

Ooh yes, Piffle looking forward to hear how you get on with the bugaboo-they look brilliant!
I've finally started to get the hang of ebay. I've bought a spare wheel for my emmaljunga- different colour but what the heck as long as the buggy works! I've also decided to buy a loola for my single, I have to, it means willie in punjabi

Next I have to work out how to sell things on ebay! woohoo. Apparently you can sell Northern bank fivers to the americans for a tenner

sazzybee · 17/06/2007 08:58

Morning all

Ooh rosy - get you with ebay! I've never bought or sold anything on there - too scared and technophobic. I think that translates as too old really

The rugby hold is brill - have just remembered that as well as teaching me how to get elliot how to latch on properly (by taking him off every time he did it and getting me to put him back on again and again until I'd got the hang of it), my bf counsellor taught me the rugby hold which made feeding him about a million times easier.

TheBlonde - 12 hours! Had a much better night last night thankfully but not that good! I think E was a bit chilly in his 1.5 tog grobag so I put him back in a 2.5 one and he slept through till 5am. Phew. Oh and I keep forgetting to say I never got that CAT from you (probably because I wasn't registered properly but I am now) so I'm not ignoring you honest!

Will you lot be spoiling your DHs/DPs today?

I must start watching Dr Who ...

Shrinkinglily · 17/06/2007 09:03

Sazzy, i'm old, scared and technophobic too. I've avoided it for ages...now I'm just sort of throwing myself at it with wild abandon and if i screw it up what the heck
