Afternoon everyone!

I seem to have a baby that either wants no sleep or ALL THE SLEEP! Last night she passed out fell asleep with DH while I was reading Grumpy 1 her bedtime story at 7:15pm. She then slept all the way through to 5:45am despite not having had her 7:30pm night time boob feed. How??? Anyway, she is now back asleep, in her cot of all places, and has been for over an hour. Presumably several days / nights of sporadic sleep has taken its toll on her as much as it has on us!

Oops, there she goes... must dash. Will post more later.

Fanby · 24/11/2015 12:52

Oh slowwife! This is epically exciting, very happy for you on this amazing sleep front!! There is hope for us all GrinGrin

MaGratgarlik1983 · 24/11/2015 14:11

DS is almost 14 weeks and has just got really clingy?! Must buy a sling!

everythingispeachy · 24/11/2015 14:11

Hi I have been reading but not getting time to post. Argh baby just awake. See what I mean! I'll be back...

FattyNinjaOwl · 24/11/2015 14:38

I'm knackered. I need sleep. It's not fair.

Adorable baby/toddler pics.

rrra · 24/11/2015 15:48

Hi everyone. Sorry not been around much since we got out of hospital. All is good with DS, you wouldn't know he was ill now.

Interesting to read so many have nap projects! Even though he was sleeping solo in hospital (had no choice!), DS not wanting to nap solo just now. To be honest it is good if I can get him to nap without being latched on!

I bought no cry nap solution, but like all books I think they just make me feel inadequate and so I don't know why I bother! A lot seems common sense, but if your baby won't be put down sleepy but awake and fall asleep, what do you do?? You cant force them. Back to sling use I think. We are on the younger end of the spectrum as 30th aug, so waiting for sleep regression to hit too!

It is so funny how they are all so different, with nighttime and daytime sleep, regardless of how they are fed. Am pondering a pre bedtime formula feed to see if it gets us a long stretch at start of night. Does anyone else do this and bf the rest of the time?

As always, gorgeous pics of babies and toddlers!

MaGratgarlik1983 · 24/11/2015 18:06

Right I'm totally confused. After béing clingy all day, DS had a dark green poo (he's Ff) then I tried to give him a big cuddle about 5 upon which he went mental at me. So I put him on his playmate to try and calm him down, he started laughing and then fell asleep??! Any ideas??!

Joskar · 24/11/2015 18:36

It's really common for the latch to change throughout. Baby gets bigger, jaw changes etc. Try biological nurturing or flipple techniques to get a good deep latch. Breastfeeding groups on fb or MN or in rl for good support and advice. Don't put up with bad latch. Pop the baby off and relatch or you risk cracked nipples. Lansinoh like mad. Hope it gets better.

My toddler is starting to be impossible to nap through the day. She's driving me up the fecking wall. So tired. Poor baby doesn't get a project nap. She just get put in the sling while I wrestle with dd1.

We start making our Christmas cards soon. Yay! When dd1 was this age we made lovely ones. Now they're a bit less lovely and a bit more glittery as she less easy to control! Love a bit of crafting.

Glad you're out of hospital, rra.

Hope you're hanging in there, tindel. Thinking on you.

So sad about your dog, lily. You must do the best for everyone in the house.

mzzzf · 24/11/2015 20:40

My goodness you guys are all so brilliant with your arts and crafts. As much as I might look like a chubby Kirsty allsop I cannot craft much more than a cake! I have all these lovely ideas but never get on it really. I do love a knick knack shop though so financially I support craftiness instead Wink

Currently doing the bedtime dance with dd asleep on my lap. Waiting for the right time to do a transfer. Tried the quick put down earlier when she was groggy but I just got a level 7 cry back at me. Not so good.

For you experienced mamma's do you think it looks like mini mzzzf is teething one on side?! Today her right cheek has gone all warm and red. The dribble is still volumous, but it's been like that for weeks! This is new though. I can't see any white specks on her gums but the once flat lines are getting more bumpy, especially top front right. Question is can teething cheeks only affect one side?!

Clstow · 24/11/2015 20:51

No idea about teething but omg she is so cute!

Thanks for the boob sympathy ladies, I've dug the lansinoh back out, altered my feeding position and had one of those salted caramel coffees from costa, so hoping I should feel better very soon. Really appreciate the support... As always x

Lilydreams · 24/11/2015 21:05

Another naff night for a lot of us last night then!! Let's hope tonight's going to be better but I'm it holding my breath here!

Rra so nice to hear from you and that your DS doing so well now!

Magrat- sounds like your DS was just being a little monkey! I think mind is definately teething and he's been like Jekyll and Hyde all day- I've had the biggest smiles and also the loudest screams!! Usually within a few seconds of each other- it's exhausting!! He has been asleep on me for 45 mins so going to try and transfer soon- waiting for the right time like you mzzf!! I would deginatg say mini Mzzf looks like she's teething- rosy cheeks exactly like that here- she is adorable by the way! I have no idea if they can be teething one sided but I don't see why not.

Clstow- hope the lasinoh helped it really is magical stuff! I know the Costa will have- how good is that salted caramel coffee!

Thanks to everyone for the comments re the dogs. Took them for an off lead walk this afty- we got drowned in the process in the pissing down rain- all except DS who was snug as s bug in a rug in his carrier (thanks again for all the advice last time I asked about the ergo btw I am much happier having him in it now and he is quite content in there although did scream for a bit on the way home but I think it was the evil teeth again!). Really brought it home the difference in the 2 dogs- boy just nibbled grass and stated pretty much at our feet whilst girl ran in circles round us all! When DH ran off across the field boy dog was lolliping after him whilst girl was like a bullet. Aww my poor old man dog- don't know when he got so old! Bathed them after so they smell lovely now and have both been sleeping since which is nice. If only I could do this with them everyday!!

Fingers crossed the bar is empty tonight!! Hmm

Slowifeandthegrumpydwarfs · 24/11/2015 21:37

Mini-mzzzf is gorgeous! And, yes, teething can induce red cheeks on one or both sides so it's definitely possible. lily the teething and green poo thing is interesting (well insofar as baby poo is ever interesting). Drs and HVs will swear blind there is no connection but it is weirdly common for the two to go hand in hand so there does seem to be a link, just no one has worked out why yet. frolic I am adding one of those neckerchew things to grumpy2s Christmas list - what a cracking idea. She does love a good chew on her cloth bibs as it is Smile

love please can I hire you when my Mum dies to do our craft stuff? It'll reassure grumpy 1 no end to hear that I have a back up plan!

clstow much sympathy for the bf'ing pain. It's a bugger when it starts to hurt again. My guess is that it's size related, you do have to fiddle around with holds and latch positions when they get longer, also some babies do go through phases of adopting a lazy latch so you have to go back to first principles with them and really focus on it again. Fingers crossed it sorts itself out soon. Aren't you within sight of the finish line for your bf'ing journey anyway? Something to focus on through the gritted teeth...

rrra I'm not sure about the evening formula bottle because I have no personal experience of doing that. I do know that we used to give grumpy 1 a bottle of ebm for a night feed and it did cock my supply up so we stopped after a while. My midwife said its to do with the fact that the evening and night feeds are what stimulate your milk production for the following day so if you drop them your supply goes down. However, and this is a big Bueno-sized BUT - I know loads of people who happily combination fed with a bedtime bottle with absolutely no issues so I reckon a lot of it is down to luck. Also, burn the book! Do what you feel is right and is working for you. Parenting books are evil.

fanby the sleep is a fluke I am sure but I do feel so much better for a decent nights Zzzzs. Hope you are feeling better for some r&r time with your folks (and your Mum has learnt to avoid the dreaded cradle hold!) You can also come to mine to do craft with my girls. I'd pay you and everything!

frolic how did the jabs go? Did you take DS?

magrat sounds like your DS has a sense of humour even at this tender age! Is he still asleep now? Amazing what a good poo can do for the soul Wink

I'm off to bed now, grumpy 2 has spent most of the last 24 hours asleep so I'm anticipating a long one tonight. We are also implementing an earlier get up for grumpy 1 from tomorrow to try and avoid the school run meltdowns (hers and mine) that seem to be occurring with alarming regularity at present Sad

FattyNinjaOwl · 24/11/2015 21:43

mzzzf looks like teething to me. She's adorable! Mine gave always ended up with a purple line just before the tooth breaks through, that's what I look for then I know when a tooth is imminent. DS2 is teething too. He launched himself at me to shove my hand in his gob before. He's so drooly! I'm having to change him at least twice a day!
Here are my two little ones, just after DD decided to roly poly off the couch (yeah, falling down stairs didn't stop her being mental!)

Frolicacid · 24/11/2015 21:44

Can I just have a bit of a self indulgent rant? I'm so fucked off with this fucking cold! Ds and I have been off for 9 days now. Why, oh why are we getting worse instead of better? The poor little chap is doing so well, but I just want to crawl under a rock. Dh is really suffering as well. Every time we finally get Ds to sleep, one of us wakes him with our coughing. I've never struggled like this to shake off a stupid cold before. If it wasn't the only thing that calms poor Ds, I would be giving up on bf'ing and drowning myself in a vat of night nurse and brandy.
I don't want to be a grown up any more Sad

Lilydreams · 24/11/2015 21:56

Oh frolic big hugs. I know it sounds naff but have you tried honey and lemon with hot water? It can be quite soothing for a tickly cough. I had a nasty cold when pregnant and remember longing for the night nurse so I feel for you.

Fatty- my DS seems to prefer my hand to chew too! I've tried him with a million different teether type things bug nothing seems to fit in his mouth quite as satisfyingly as my knuckle!

Good luck with the night and the morning slowife I hope there aren't too many tears!

Off to bed myself now Mugabe night everyone!

Frolicacid · 24/11/2015 22:10

Thanks for listening to my rant. I feel better just for saying it Grin

lily, they have the neckerchews in m&s as well. Ds was given some vouchers from my work so I'll use them I think.
Glad you had a good walk with the dogs today. I'm also getting on a lot better with the ergo now Ds is a bit bigger. There seemed to be a bit of an awkward stage in between needing the newborn insert and not.
I've drunk so much honey that the stuff is starting to make me heave!

I hope your cold does one soon dozy. It read the conception bus where we got our bfp's today. Made me giggle how much we shared about our sex lives and cervical secretions! magrat was there as well.
I miss the tiny baby stage too!

Yay! For some good sleep tindel. I hope he keeps it up.

Beautiful baby pics as usual Smile

We also have red cheeks mzzf. He's not even 3 months yet!

I hope the boob is better clstow. I've been lucky so far, but my sister used to swear by hot flannels when she struggled.

Ds is a bit all or nothing with sleep slow. We are currently on nothing. I think he sleeps lots during growth spurts. Maybe dwarf 2 will be a giant soon?

Glad Ds is better rrra.

I hope everyone else is ok and that the bar isn't too busy later on.

kbro79 · 24/11/2015 22:21

Oh clstow Breast feeding is the gift that keeps on giving isn't it? Just when I think I've got it something like that happens. Think someone mentioned it already but I found fipple technique v helpful when we last went through a painful latch phase. Also there are videos on 'deep latch technique' which I found worked v well. Flowers for you. It is v frustrating when it suddenly stops working.

Rrra so pleased your boy is on the mend. we sometimes give a bottle of formula before bed. Too be honest it makes no difference at all the his sleep but gives me a bit of a break. It does leave me with painful boobs sometimes so mostly now I don't bother but am feeling shit tonight so DH is going to to give me a rest. That said like slow mentioned I know lots of people that successful mix the two and swear it improves sleep. Also my sister said the exact same thing about the no cry sleep book making her feel bad.

Speaking of feeling bad, I wondered on to the sleep forum to try and get advice about DS napping (or lack of) and now feel v bad about how little sleep he is having. He gets nowhere near 18 hours. But nothing I do works and I say this with no judgement on anything anyone else does but doing cry it out or controlled crying is just not for me. (DS really is my PFB Smile)

Frolic am feeling horrible too and really want this bloody cold to sod off. Also have been feeling v sick day. Was a horrible reminder of pregnancy. Yuk. But maybe needed to stop me rushing into baby number 2.......

Question for the co - sleepers. This is probably a stupid question but how do you do it in terms of holding baby? Do they sleep on you? In your arms? Sometimes in the morning DS will give me another hour if I hold in bed but I can't get comfy enough to get myself back to sleep and I get anxious about doing it in a risky way.

Frolicacid · 24/11/2015 23:01

Erm, is it ok that after a good hour of not settling, Ds has finally stopped crying and is settled on my lap, mesmerised by a ch5 documentary about Fred west ??!! Blush

FattyNinjaOwl · 24/11/2015 23:16

Why not? Grin Mines shifting between watching house and attacking my boobs. He likes to lick them....
He's never been breastfed, he just likes boobs... Confused

Frolicacid · 24/11/2015 23:23

Lol fatty!

It worked!! Ds is snoring ............ For now! I actually bet he sleeps all night and I wake up several times from nightmares about being cut up and burst your Fred and rose.

mzzzf · 25/11/2015 01:15

Oh crikey I couldn't watch a Fred Wedt doc before bed. I'd get the right willies!! Likewise Doctor Who can only be watched during daylight hours!!! Grin
Fatty - you must have awesome boobs!!
Kbro - re number 2. I've just had a very clear vision of having twins next time. I mean, can you bloody imagine doing all the crazy newborn stuff x2 AND having a toddler?!?!! Waaaaaah!!!

Frolic - gargling saltwater, oooodles of lemon drinks, gallons of fluid and if you're super snotty try pulling salted water through your nose. If you're bored of coughing try huffing, powerful steaming up a window type huffs. They're more effective at shifting phlegm, less painful and quieter!!! If you're struggling at night, sleep on your side, left ideally, make breathing less hard work. Can you tell I work with lots of mucus ridden patients normally?! Grin

Oh I read bloody loads re sleep. At 4 months they 'should' be getting 14-15hrs/24hrs. With 9-10 of those hours at night and 4-5 during daytime BUT as with everything else these tricksy little monkeys will do what they like!!! 18hrs is like newborn stage!!!!

Right I've loaded mini mzzzf up, will risk a transfer in a few mins. Oh and whoever says formula helps babies sleep at night can fuck right off, mini mzzzf clearly hasn't ever heard of this magic effect either GrinGrin

Slowifeandthegrumpydwarfs · 25/11/2015 02:36

First visit to Mugabe's here. Back to the more conventional 2:15am snack attack (better than the 12:30 one, not as good as the 5:45am outing).

Ah frolic your cold does sound miserable now. Rant away! I like eucalyptus oil in a bowl of steamy water for clearing snot from both me and the kids but not much else works here apart from the grin and bear it method. I do remember us all being sick permanently during grumpy 1s first winter. Another parenting joy no one warns you about.

kbro don't feel bad about the sleeping. As mzzzf says 18 hours is for newborns. Plus, even if you wanted to do controlled crying it's not recommended for babies under 6-months anyway as they are far too young still to be allowed to cry without being checked on so no one should have been advocating that yet.

frolic, lily* what do you cover your babies in when you take them out in the ergo. Our new sling is the Beco Gemini which is pretty similar and I am wondering whether it's worth getting one of those Bundle Bean cover things for cold / rainy days. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

The milk bar is shutting so I'm off the dance floor for a bit. Catch you all laters...

Frolicacid · 25/11/2015 03:31

Thanks mzzf. I've been doing most of that, but will try the steaming up a window puffing!
A girl in the bf group I go to has twins. She also has 3 older. I am in total awe of her! I can't work out how you'd pick up 2 babies, let alone look after them and others!

Thank you also slow. These babies should come with hazmat suits and a health warning!
With the ergo, I tend to put Ds in a thin layer and a thinish coat. E.g vest, tights, fleecy onesie and a hat. I read they shouldn't be too hot but I can't bring myself to take him out without a 'coat'. To be honest, as with everything else, I'm just winging it.

Looks like he's gone straight back to sleep after this feed. Fingers crossed he stays that way!

Lilydreams · 25/11/2015 04:22

Ohh frolic thanks for the m&s tip re the neckerchews. I am literally crying laughing at Fred west doc sending him to sleep- go with whatever works though right! Haha I thought my honey tip might have been tried already- just tell me to shut it! Ergo wise I do still have DS in the newborn insert as he isn't massive but it's certainly easier now his legs go outside not in. I think he's ready for coming out it soon though as it's quite a snug fit- do you still use the pillow on its own or have you got rid entirely? Slowife- yesterday I had DS in his normal clothes for the day so vest, tshirt, joggers, socks and then a thin fleecy onsie over the top with hat and mittens- I also did the bottom button up on my coat so that he was tucked in and then the little rain/ sun cover was over his head- isn't waterproof at all but managed to keep him dry somehow! Seems rather a lot and I did worry he would overheat but it was freezing and torrentially raining! It's his legs/ feet I worry about getting cold as there hanging out all exposed to the elements.

Kbro- I really really wouldn't worry about the 18 hours sleep thing- I think DS has probably managed that a total of 2/3 times since he was born!! Usually much less! When he was new born he wouldn't sleep for more than 30 mins at a time!!

Right he's asleep on my shoulder again post feed like my little parrot baby so going to put him back down and sneak some more zzzz! Only had 4 dummy put back wake ups so far so having a 'good' night here Hmm

sianihedgehog · 25/11/2015 06:57

Omg, he slept through!! Proper full night, 11 to 6, and I put him on the boob asleep when he stirred at 6 because the giant cement tits had kept me awake from 5. He's currently passed out AGAIN across my lap with a tummy full of milk and I am pretty sure a nappy full of poop.
