Thread to share the newborn news and support each other through the 'eeek what do I do?' When the baby gets home and you stare at it in the car seat and think - help!!

Hi bump congrats on the arrival of felicity!
You hospital stay sounds very similar to mine! Early babies are likely to be jaundice and they are obsessed woth getting good in them. She should latch sitting up soon - she's just tiny so it's all a bit hard at the moment. My baby didn't latch for first couple of days but then just got the hang of it. But it's very stressful when you have a paed going mental about blood sugars.
I too got by on about 2 hours sleep and they kept saying 'you must rest' but how? There's someone there every 5 mins doing some test or other or it's feed or nappy change time or food time for us. Hope she sustains the low bilirubin test. My son had 3 different goes of phototherapy as he rebounded - twice. Something more common in prem babies and the threshold for light treatment is much lower.

Both of us have been windy. I had so much gas after birth it was a bit comical. Still not settled properly now.
And ds farts like a trouper too. Sign of the tongue tie bit also hope it doesn't develop into colic at around 6 weeks. Please no!!

Bump that sounds so like my son's start in life. He became a pro BF don't worry!

I'm pretty sure Lilla will have colic symptoms at 6 weeks. She is already showing symptoms of silent reflux (she makes strange goaty / creaky noises in her throat after a feed as the milk comes back up), this isn't bothering her yet but in 6 weeks of doing this it will burn the back of her throat with stomach acid - hence 'colic' classically appears at 6 weeks. My paed reckons colic is undiagnosed silent reflux typically caused by a cows milk intolerance. I've gone dairy free since Monday so I'm hoping this makes it milder. I'm dreading the screaming at 6 weeks when the pain kicks in. She has at least got reflux on her hospital records and the GP came to see her yesterday so hopefully we'll be able to get meds when she's symptomatic rather than fighting for weeks to get them. Sad Its horrible waiting for it to kick in though.

Welcome Bump. I also found feeding lying down with DD was a saviour - she was so much less angsty and vomity if I did so, I think my milk flow was less forceful that way. A friend could only bf lying down and managed it for 7 months however it was summer so she did lots of feeding lying in sunny parks - not so much a winter option Hmm I'm sure as yellow said though you'll both become pros in the craziest of positions before too long!

We bought a Sleepyhead yesterday for Rowan as there was absolutely no way the Moses basket was going to be accepted. Have so far slept with him on my chest but wasn't happy about it longer term. We had him between us in bed in it last night and I tentatively think it's going to be a winner. He did wake every 1-2 hours for a feed and had been doing longer stretches but it was possible to resettle him in it fairly easily so I'm holding out hope. Bit of a gamble at £100 but fingers crossed.

fedupofrainydays · 03/10/2014 08:10

R makes weird noises after feeds too - really odd ones. Really hope it's not reflux Sad good you have it on record yellow so at least can be on top if it if and when it appears painful

Anyone remember / know how long bleeding lasts? It's day 17 for us and I still have 'a light period' going on.

Hope everyone's bits aren't too sore. Keep taking the painkillers as regularly as within the dosage allowance / guide

fedup I bled for 6 weeks last time but midwife said to me anything between 2-6 is normal. Mine was really light but yesterday filled three pads in 5 minutes. Think it's because I've started to be more active. Back to light bleed again today.

I know this sounds a bit gross but i think I've got a clot that's trying to come out - I can feel it when I walk a lot. Either that or it's my pathetic pelvic floor. Must do exercises

The norm to feel like that bugs
Today I have been out to a soft play and survived and back to sort builders out and taken ds1 to nursery. I'm broken! Now being asked to make decisions re paint and can't think straight

Buggerlugs with number one I was like that for easily 6 weeks. This time I feel much more like 'me' again only 8 days in. Rest up and applaud yourself for getting thru each day. Is this your first? From 0-1 baby is a MASSIVE life change.

YellowWellies · 03/10/2014 14:33

I should stress I feel like a knackered me!

Buggerlugs you are doing an epic job! Bit by bit sleep will improve and as said before you find you're achieving wee miracles like brushing teeth, showering, I'm contemplating baking! Something I didn't achieve first time until Jonas' first birthday cake Blush . Remember everybody fed nobody dead! That's achievement enough first time. My first was a prem too so I do really empathise. You've had a baptism of fire hon Thanks

fedupofrainydays · 03/10/2014 15:46

After my first I had started with 4 nights of no sleep (longest labour ever then giving birth then being on post natal ward and was a washed out, zombie for a good while!
Second time round you know what you are doing with the baby more - so it's different. I think it's also a human design thing as it's realised the second time the woman needs to function to take care of existing children!!
I'm finding the baby the easy part, my toddler and the builders the difficult part!!

OP posts:
Captainmcgraw · 03/10/2014 16:07

It's so true, I'm finding things second time round sooo different. DD been out to the park this afternoon with MIL and I've been at home slightly restless as don't have much to do. First time round I was a complete mess, so exhausted and felt anxious and overly busy the whole time.

I somehow suspect that when paternity leave is over (Tuesday) and our tag team of parents vacate and I'm left alone with two it will be a very different story however.

Buggerlugs you are doing great and it is 100% normal to be feeling like that.

YellowWellies · 03/10/2014 18:39

I feel so shit. I was loading the dishwasher whilst DH had baby cuddles and J nommed a biscuit in front of Cbeebies - J slipped off the sofa and bashed his head on the table corner. Its the closest I've ever come to passing out seeing the massive blue black egg (bigger than a hen's egg) which popped up on his forehead. He was so hysterical he nearly choked on his biscuit. I feel crap cos DH has dashed off to A&E with him whilst I stay here with Lilla Sad

YellowWellies · 03/10/2014 18:40

DH has just rung - j's running amok in A&E. Thank god!

fedupofrainydays · 03/10/2014 18:57

If I didn't have the builders I think I would be a bit restless too.
We have two days now without them here then promised to finish next week. Can't wait!!!

OP posts:
fedupofrainydays · 03/10/2014 18:58

Glad j is ok yellow
Don't feel guilty - although as a mother you feel constant guilt!

OP posts:
YellowWellies · 03/10/2014 21:10

He seems to be fine now but we are both watching the video monitor like paranoid hawks for vomiting and signs of concussion. Eegad I've aged ten years. Whilst loading the dishwasher whilst BF DD (the advantage of a tiny baby!) I did think why on earth am I stressed about a newborn when I have a mad kamikaze toddler in the house - then I remembered I'm meant to keep them both alive next week once DH is back at work Shock Shock Shock Shock Shock Shock

fedupofrainydays · 04/10/2014 08:59

That's good yellow hope you managed to get some sleep.

Does anyone have an explanation for why my nipples hurt at night but not in the day?
Hope I haven't got nipple thrush as well as in my bits. The doctor gave me a pill that's done nowt.
