Thread to share the newborn news and support each other through the 'eeek what do I do?' When the baby gets home and you stare at it in the car seat and think - help!!

Get a great big muslin over things whilst you're still nervous about latching and shields. Once you've done it once you'll be much more relaxed. xxxx

horseyhelen · 01/10/2014 17:41

Agree to the big Muslim, once latched I feel comfortable with feeding out and about and really people are that busy doing their own stuff they won't even notice. With my dd I never had any negative comments

fedupofrainydays · 01/10/2014 22:48

Had a v bad day today.
But got ds' tongue tie snipped so hopefully improvements ahead on the feeding. Lady said it was quite bad but luckily I've got big nipples Shock and he's got a long tongue so we have got by ok. Little dude is very tired after his busy day.
I'm a wreck and dreading tomorrow when got builders to sort out Sad and both children with me all day. Hmm

Oh god I feel awful, like worst mum in the world.
The baby was all worked up so I took her into the sitting room to feed and settle her. Wrapped her in swaddle and put her in the Moses basket next to me with a blanket over her bottom half.

Woke up about an hour later to find she has kicked off the swaddle and blanket and is lying in the Moses basket in just a long-sleeved vestShockSad

I scooped her up and she is now on my chest with my cashmere cardi wrapped around us and a blanket on us. Oh god her little hands are like ice SadSad

tak1ngchances · 02/10/2014 03:29

Bigger lugs yes my nipples are also all shredded up. I feed from alternate sides and offer the other side at the end of each feed. Occasionally she takes it but usually just has a v long feed on one side then is finished.

YellowWellies · 02/10/2014 03:49

My boobs were an engorged mess on Monday but are back to normal now - I'm so glad. I hate engorgement its my least favourite part of BF - thank god its over quickly!

Shredded nipples doesn't sound good - are you using lansinoh and making sure baby is taking enough nipple and boob into their mouth? Show your latch to the MW again tomorrow maybe. As for one side or both - I offer both (but only after a minimum of 20 - 30 minutes on one side or if she's unlatched herself, she rarely takes both sides though).

Tonight she's fed at 10, 1 and 3.30 - she's getting better at lasting longer between feeds. Whoop!

As for cold babies. It happens! They do wriggle. Don't beat yourself up xxxxx Lilla has spent much of the day in a vest to get her to be awake enough to nurse well.

Bugger yes you don't need to do anything. Just put baby to the breast whenever they want. They'll tell your breasts by suckling how much milk they need and your breasts will adjust supply accordingly. First time round engorgement can last a few days - it will go of its own accord though. If you are really uncomfortable and baby is struggling to latch on to rock hard boobs - hand express for a few seconds to make it more comfy. Engorgement IMHO is the worst bit of BF but take it as a good sign that you have lots of milk.

YellowWellies · 02/10/2014 06:13

Oh and you only go thru engorgement once its not a regular thing!

fedupofrainydays · 02/10/2014 07:44

TT snip has really helped - doesn't hurt at all now!
When I'm less tired I will write down a lot lf her feeding advice - it was very interesting and helpful. But it's important to drain one breast to ensure they are getting fatty hind milk.

Yes I was advised to change sides too quickly with j and he got too much foremilk and really upset tum as a result! Now I make sure she's on for at least half an hour / boob is empty / she unlatches before offering the other side.

YellowWellies · 02/10/2014 09:09

Fed up great news on the TT snip! Smile

fedupofrainydays · 02/10/2014 13:48

Knackered. Just had builders here this morning going through everything still need to be finished. Looking after two kids whilst doing that is extremely difficult!

[delurks]

hello lovely new mums!

Just delurking to say to Taking that body temp wise, pay attention to how the chest/back feel rather than the hands/feet. It's normal for extremities to feel cold when the core temp is fine.

I'm loving reading about the ups and downs of the early days and hope to join you soon (though at 39+2 I could be on the pregnant side for ages yet!)

gunwalloe · 02/10/2014 19:26

Seems like ive still got the weepys its so annoying silly things setting me of I hope I don't see anything sad when I finally leave the house or could majorly embarrass myself!

Anyone else?

YellowWellies · 02/10/2014 19:58

Gun I've got the weepies too - feeling so guilty for not being there for my wee man Sad

fedupofrainydays · 02/10/2014 20:09

Me too. But can't work out if just from tiredness ir frustration with the builders. It's just horrdenous having then here when trying to get settled with newborn. Just horrible.

Yesterday I burst into tears on the Feeding clinic ladies as just had such a rubbish day! They were so sweet.
Baby has fed pretty much all day and now having a sleep. Ds1 is in bed and I quite enjoyed dojng his bath and story tonight as missed it. Now enjoying a small crisp glass of Sauvignon blanc while I wait for the dinner to cook (ready meal if moussaka of course - sainsburys taste the difference somehow makes it seem better Wink)

I'm missing J's bedtime as I can't lift him into the cot Sad

fedupofrainydays · 02/10/2014 20:44

Make sure you get some cuddles with him on the sofa.

Thanks chick x

porcito · 03/10/2014 03:41

Must be hard yellow but yes, hopefully not long. Will all be worth it when they play together.

I've cried in front of most of the town now, and shown my boobs - still not got the hang of
discreet BF but don't really care! Grey's Anatomy is not the TV show to watch in this condition...

We had our first peds appointment today- she's put on 250g and is doing well ! A bit yellow and a lot of gas but otherwise pleased. I'm amazed at the sounds that come from her!
