LO is playing a game with my boob called "now I want you, now I don't" and by the smiles she's giving it looks like she's having a great time Xmas Hmm mummy however is not

StuntNun · 20/12/2012 06:54

Lane antibiotics tend to upset your gut, especially the broad spectrum ones like co-Amoxiclav. If you are breastfeeding they can pass into the breastmilk and upset your baby's gut too although only tiny quantities are passed across. The probiotics will support you by encouraging your gut to maintain a healthy balance of beneficial bacteria and will also pass across to the baby in breastmilk. I always take probiotics when I have a course of antibiotics. There is also some evidence that probiotics are of benefit in the prevention of eczema and asthma in babies. I take the probiotic drinks you can buy in the supermarket but you can also get tablets (for people going dairy-free) and you can also get special probiotics for babies. I was on co-Amoxiclav for an infected CS wound and J had terrible tummy aches while I was on them.

CandyPop · 20/12/2012 07:01

lane u should take probiotics because the antibiotics calls all bacteria including the good ones . This means that some ppl end up getting thrush whilst on antibiotics as the good bacteria normally keeps thrush at bay

LO was so unsettled after 2am feed , I held her for 40 mins then dh tried to settle for another 30mins. My mum ended up coming into our room and taking her downstairs. Finally for to sleep just before she was due a feed !!! Made a decision to let her sleep for anothe hr as she was so tired!

yw my LO has most of those symptoms too :/. But like vq said , we all can't have acid reflux / milk intolerance ?! Hmm.. LO has a cold so some of the symptoms is to do with that I think ... Mucus, snot etc. I will keep an eye out for it then

Sophiathesnowfairy · 20/12/2012 07:02

As far as I am aware the antibiotics can damage the bacteria in your gut that help you manage food. So if you are likely tobe taking them for a while a probiotic will protect it. There must be a link somewhere though with you breast milk but I din't know what that is.

Good night. O we t down at7 . I woke him for a 10:30 feed and put him down at 11;30, not a peep till 4:45. 2 oz down, back to sleep in 20 Xmas Grin

CandyPop · 20/12/2012 07:03

Kills not calls!

Passmethecrisps · 20/12/2012 07:10

Good morning,

VQ poor wee J. It really is endless isn't it?

I hope you did kick him sweetpea!

nervous I'll bet that would be charming were it not 5:45am

Well, much excitement chez crisps last night and this morning.

After bundling wee P up in her swaddle me wrap at 12:45 we actually DTD! Crikey blimey o'reilly! Next thing I knew it was 4am and I was preparing myself for the call. Then it was 5. I checked she was ok and tentatively crept back to bed. Then finally I got the call at 5:45. 5 hours is a record! I, of course, didn't get 5 hours but probably did get 3 to 3.5 which feels great actually!

I got p up, gave her all her meds and fed her - she took 90ml! No crying, no arching back! Then I popped her in her swing where she happily sat while I made coffee and put the washing badly on the airer.

She is asleep again now do maybe I can shut my eyes for another 45 mins.

Fingers crossed the rest of the day goes so well,

StuntNun · 20/12/2012 07:12

Nervous do you have a voice memo app on your phone that will let you record your baby crying? That and a photo of your baby or looking at your baby while expressing will help you let down. I find thinking about the let down sensation seems to encourage it. You need to let down more than once while expressing so your flow might stop for a bit then start up again if you keep on pumping. Breast massage can help, I stroke down along the breast ducts all around. Are you using a manual pump or an electric? I get best results when expressing is just a little bit painful, i.e. I'd like to turn it down a bit but I can handle it, and I find that hard to achieve with a manual pump. Different pumps give different results, I found the Tommee Tippee manual got more milk out than the Avent one. You could always hire a hospital grade pump for a month or two to get you into the swing of expressing. I hope this gives you some ideas to work with.

Passmethecrisps · 20/12/2012 07:23

That's the problem really isn't it candypop? Babies have only so many ways to show their wellness or otherwise so many ailments have similar symptoms. Even overtiredness shows signs which can look similar - back arching, fighting you off, angry shouts.

pikz · 20/12/2012 07:51

Nervous definitely get an electric pump if you are planning on doing a lot if pumping. Mornings produce more than evenings and you express better when naturally woken so don't set an alarm. It takes time to get it going so set aside half an hour for it. 15 mins per boob and pump for a couple of minutes past the last drop of milk... This pushes the ducts to produce more. As stunt says wait for the 2nd let down too. This makes sure you get hind milk as well. You need to pump ever 2/3 hours in beginning to get a good supply and then you can slack off slightly but not too much. Hope this helps.

I now just EBM feed and pump about 35/40oz a day. It's taken a while to build up that kind of supply.

horseylady · 20/12/2012 08:01

Ds has many of those symptoms, but I assume the more determinate ones are the acid smelling breath etc. In which case he doesn't haven't that. I also don't think he (currently) has a reflux problem. As pass said a lot of it over tiredness (which we get a lot as he fights sleep).

Also when he had his cold, he was horrendous and certainly had more symptoms of reflux,, but it was down to the cold and shifting the mucous. He's still got some mucous (which he happily shifted over me this morning!!). I think intolerances to dairy are generally seen in families too so it's worth considering.

Anyway, the best thing is to get your little ones checked by your gp. Infant gaviscon may help if you've been suffering for a while.

DesperateHousewife21 · 20/12/2012 08:21

Woo! Another 9-4 sleep, one feed then back to sleep til 7 when ds woke us all up.

Anyone else having trouble getting their baby to smile? Dd is 6 weeks tomo, took her to the hv on tues and she had to ask another hv to take a look at her. This second hv got her smiling which was good but I can't do it! She doesn't really hold my gaze she looks all around my head/ face. Is she just a bit young still?

NervousReindeer · 20/12/2012 08:32

Thank you stunt I've got the tommee tippee manual pump and was thinking about getting an electric but I don't want to spend all that money and it be no good so ill looking into renting a hospital grade one, thanks for the tip

pikz Xmas Shock Xmas Shock are you kidding me!!!!! Up to 40oz a day!! Xmas Envy

StuntNun · 20/12/2012 08:44

I have the Spectra 3 pump Nervous which was £50 and works well, I just bought a second set for it for £6 so I can pump both sides at once.

I think all babies have some reflux symptoms because the oesophageal sphincter is weak at birth but Gastro Oesophageal Reflux Disease is thankfully less common. So don't read too much into those symptoms. A baby with full blown reflux will be a very unhappy one rather than having problems here and there. Two of my neighbours babies had reflux and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. I had reflux myself as an older child and the first time I had it I thought I was going to die, it was like a heart attack. What an awful thing for a wee baby to go through.

Sophiathesnowfairy · 20/12/2012 08:51

Yes stunt I did know someone once with reflux and the child cried ALL the time, really, contstantly, till it was weaned.

Right this is how addled and tired I am and is a little bit Xmas Blush

Last night I was reading the Facebook chat about the schedule and a few of you said you followed Vicki's schedule. I thought " oo, what is this bicki's schedule they are all talking about. Ha en't heard of it before" and I actually googled it before I came to my senses and realised it was horsey

You know what I was saying about being a reasonably intellegent woman? Well, scrap that!

kirrinIsland · 20/12/2012 08:55

DH DP can get N to smile loads but i find it really hard - suspect it may be that she still sees me as nothing more than a milk giver!!

ValiumQueen · 20/12/2012 09:29

Baby talk, the squeaky high pitch talk, gets J smiling. The person he smiles best for is DD2. He goes bonkers smiling for her.

I have tried saline spray and snot boggler with limited success. It seems really far back in his throat.

stunt you are a real asset to this thread Thanks I think you are right that all babies have these symptoms to an extent. I think we feel if we have a diagnosis we can make everything better Sad

TheDetective · 20/12/2012 09:38

Rofl! Oh Sophia that really made me giggle! You definitely need sone more sleep Wink!

DP is officially an arse. He did the 2.30am feed. After I woke him. At 5 I noticed Oscar was asleep on him. At 6 I woke to find DP giving H the remainder of the 2.30 bottle. Except I didn't know it. Til after I took Oscar off DP and started feeding him and then asked him why he hadn't woken me to do the feed (which is odd that I hadnt woken because I always do...) and he said he didn't know what the time was. I said how can you not know surely you saw the time when he woke for a feed. That's when I realised it was the same bottle. Can I say, what a dickhead? I mean I know he was tired but surely you check the time that they wake/feed?? Well with a bottle anyway!

Going to Manchester Christmas markets today! Am gonna eat my weight in yummy shite foods yippeeee! It would have to be pissing it down though!

Oscar has some of those symptoms, but am quite sure he hasn't got reflux, just a little bit of immature gut and the switch over from breast which will take time to adjust.

gardenpixies32 · 20/12/2012 09:49

I hope everyone is well.

I thought I would share what the pediatrician said about reflux (particulary silent reflux) when I took DT2 for her hospital appointment yesterday.

She has suffered with silent reflux and has been on medication for it since she was 5 weeks old.
The symptoms YW listed are spot on for reflux suffers. DT2 is on Ranitidine which cools the acid in the stomach, Domperidone which empties the stomach. The pediatrician said to give her 6 sachets of Infant Gaviscon with each feed to as this is thicker than the Ranitidine and sits on top of the acid. They more than doubled her dosages as well yesterday. To be completely honest, I haven't noticed much of a difference in her reflux and she has been on the medication for 7 weeks now. I am hoping the increased dosage will help. DT2 really struggles with it, causing sleep apnoea. They are going to rescan her stomach to have a look in 4 weeks time.

My tips would be...Keep them upright for as long as possible after a feed. Wind gently and regularly after each oz of milk, winding while they lay on their stomach is good, raise their cot on bricks. What make me feel sad is that little DT2 doesnt even cry from the pain, it affects her breathing Sad

VQ I am using my cloth nappies and I love them! Also use my own homemade wipes. I actually prefer the Bumgenius nappies to the LL. I wont order size 2 in them, but more Bumgenius nappies. Even useless OH can use the BG properly! Love their fat bots in the nappies!

Sophiathesnowfairy · 20/12/2012 09:49

We are supersonic brain stem hearing test thing today. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

pikz · 20/12/2012 10:43

Nervous I'm using medela pumps which I highly recommend. LO drinks. 28oz a day so pumping 40 gives me some extra if I have to skip a pump/waste some. I've been pumping since the day after he was born due to his feeding issues so have built a good supply and the knack to it. Be patient with it.

Passmethecrisps · 20/12/2012 11:02

Everything crossed for you sophia.

I have posted a photo on Facebook of wee p rocking a LL OSFA. Not sure it I properly fitted though

ShellyBobbs · 20/12/2012 11:37

Hugs to everyone who has issues with reflux.

YW I can't even imagine having to give up dairy, that's what I live on.

VQ Tommy sleeps on me. I only have 2 pillows and only tilt myself enough so that his head isn't lower than his body. I sleep fine, but have done this with all 4 and am a very light sleeper anyway. So far he's stayed put Xmas Grin
