Just had Oliver's second hearing test as there was no response on the first because of his cold. Same again Sad and so we have to have another one next week.

Please tell me it is his cold.

horseylady · 05/12/2012 10:38

Sophia - hopefully just a cold. Hugs anyway. The response they measure is from the hairs inside if I remember correctly? Has someone checked them for infection or blocking?

Eliza - ds appetite def reduced as well. Though he did eat, just not as much. Fingers crossed she's ok too!!

blonderthanred · 05/12/2012 10:41

Sophia we failed the hearing test twice at the hospital, so they did a different test with big earmuffs that measures brain activity and he passed that no probs. They said if there was some fluid in the ear, the normal test wouldn't work, which I guess would also apply to colds?

Sophiathesnowfairy · 05/12/2012 10:44

I hope so, got a bit tearful in front of the HV, very silly really. He will be 4 weeks tomorrow and we have been suffering a cold for most of it, I wish Ne would be well.

misslaughalot · 05/12/2012 10:45

Morning all, finally getting a chance to post here! Catching up on the thread while waiting for the MW to come and remove my stitches.

Well babylaughalot is one week old today, and she's a sleeper! She's getting 5-6 hour chunks in one go, although I'm yet to maximise this quiet time and get some sleep myself, I can't stop watching her!

She suffers very much with wind though. We've been using infacol which does seem to be helping. Does anyone have any other tips for easing trapped wind?

And those of you who are using Cheeky Wipes and need extra bits or are interested in using them, they're offering 20% off on Friday and Saturday if you use the code '2500likers'.

misslaughalot · 05/12/2012 10:48

Sophia we had the same issue as Blonder, babylaughalot failed the hearing test in her right ear twice before they used the over the ear tester, and it was because the ear still had goo in it from the birth. It would make sense that a cold would cause the same issues.

StuntNun · 05/12/2012 11:30

Nervous, J only really likes Nuk style dummies. He'll take Avent ones for a bit and he hates cherry teat soothers. Maybe try a different shape? Must nap now while he's asleep after two hours sleep last night and some dozing. 'Night.

Worst night I have ever had with any of my children. J started his usual 7pm screaming and the only thing that would stop him was feeding, 8 hrs solidly on the nipple I was sobbing from the pain but everytime he let go he screamed and screamed.
I've got a bad headache now and DP is suggesting we go out for the day, he slept from 11pm all night and he's going swimming tonight at 7pm so he can't get bent if he thinks I'm doing anything other than staying in and resting all day.

Brew and Biscuit to tits and sophia

gardenpixies32 · 05/12/2012 12:24

Sophia it is hard but try not to worry.

DT2 failed her hearing test in the SCBU in one ear. We all had to trek to the hospital when the twins were 5 weeks old to retest. It was a 2 hour test and I had to hold her the whole time. They sand papered her forehead (I am not joking, she still has the red mark!) and they attached electrodes to her forehead, back and back of her head. They then measured brain activity while passing sound through her ears. Thankfully she passed the test.

The audiologist said that babies often have a lot of fluid build up in their ears, this can be why they fail. Was your DS crying at all during his test? This can affect the results too.

Fingers crossed it is one of these things.

Passmethecrisps · 05/12/2012 12:25

And hallo to missl!

glendathegoodwitch · 05/12/2012 12:49

Morning ladies kirrin I had a night like that too which is absolute torture - Dottie feeds for 20/30 mins, falls asleep so put her in the crib, I get into bed and just doze off for 10 mins and she stirs again - proper torture!!! I'm so close to giving up bf so I'm not chained to the sofa and we both get a little sleep but that goes against everything I've learnt working in the maternity ward.

We woke up to snow today so all the roads are manic - kids schools are open so me and Dots are having a jama day in bed but again every time I think she's gone and I snuggle down for a snooze she wakes up and cries like a starved person!!!

Dottie makes cute coughing noises just before she cries and when she's rooting she shuffles like a pig searching for truffles lol

DonnaDoon · 05/12/2012 12:55

Hi everyone still trying to keep up with thread...glad to hear those with the snuffles are on the mend...DD got her first lot of jabs tomorrow.

Woah I'm glad I posted about drying sterilised stuff! I dry them because a lot of it isn't used straight away. I did think that wiping kitchen roll around a sterile surface must be defeating the object! Thanks for the unanimous response, that'll save me time xx

Evilwater · 05/12/2012 13:37

What's with the huggies?????
I'm using them!!!!

Evil

NervousAt20 · 05/12/2012 13:48

DP is recovering well petite thank you for asking, he has alot more movement in one hand which is great for us both as he can hold LO now without me

ValiumQueen · 05/12/2012 13:55

chunky happy to help. Just remember to change water daily and wash container with washing up liquid otherwise you get mould.

peaky I assemble stuff whilst still hot, then just pour out any water prior to filling. If not used within 24 hours, I re-sterilise.

J seems a bit better today.

YellowWellies · 05/12/2012 14:10

HV just been for Jonas' six week check. He's increased in size by 50% since birth and is now 9lb6oz. I think I might be able to reduce the number of mars bars I'm troughing a day.... Blush He was dancing like a cossak for the HV and did his attempting to stand up party-piece so she is very pleased with him.

All good other than his totally out of character fussiness last night turns out to be thrush. Bad Mummy for dismissing it as his reaction to me eating spicy food. My nips are starting to tingle too - might have to get some medicine for me too. Should I use the Canesten tablets? or the cream on my nipples? Any tips?

PetiteRaleuse · 05/12/2012 14:22

Ooh wish me luck for Friday. LO is going for her ECG to have a closer look at her heart murmer. When she was in hospital the other week they did have a listen but didn't pick up much, so the ECG could possibly indicate that it was a newborn issue which has resolved itself, as so many do. Fingers crossed it's nothing to worry about. Then on the 20th she has her next visit with the paed for the weigh in and the first jabs. I'll be relieved when she is immunised from whooping cough and other scary illnesses. Over here they do the chicken pox jab as a matter of course with the MMR but I think that's a few months down the line.

PetiteRaleuse · 05/12/2012 14:23

That's good news Nervous, it's awful bad luck that it happened when it did though. Have the people who attacked him been caught?

ValiumQueen · 05/12/2012 14:25

stunt I think it is 16 hours between ingesting and baby getting it in milk. Quicker for alcohol though. Not that I have done that. Yet.

kirrinIsland · 05/12/2012 14:34

That's good nervous

It's like a form of torture isn't it glenda ? I almost think it would be better if she just didn't sleep at all - by waiting till I've laid down before stirring, its like she's teasing me!

N took a bottle of ebm when in hospital so I'm thinking I'll carry on giving her one every few days to keep her in the habit. I'm not great at expressing though. I was quite excited at being able try the hospital grade electric pump but I still hardly got anything - very disappointing!

mcsquared · 05/12/2012 14:36

Sophia, I'm an audiologist so feel free to PM me if you have any questions and hopefully I can offer some reassurance. Hopefully your local Audiology department is approachable and you can also get some advice from them. However, as everyone's already said, failing the screen doesn't necessarily mean a hearing loss, particularly if the baby has a cold. Is the next test going to be the Auditory Brainstem Response? That will provide a clearer picture of what's going on and they'll likely also perform Tympanometry - a test used to check for the presence of congestion behind the eardrum which can also affect the screening results.

Lane I found it so bizarre that they took away the gas and air when I needed it most but I was so tired I went along with everything they said. I remember a perky doctor saying "Oooh you can do it without the gas and air, it'll be easy peasy" or something along those lines and if I had the energy I think I'd have punched her!

Well done horsey! I'm currently putting off even thinking about a doctorate while I have the baby so am very impressed that you're juggling baby and MSc! You have inspired me to think about doing BSL during my maternity leave, though!

GTbaby, we're in the bigger room now but BIL is back from uni this weekend so we'll see if he kicks up a fuss about not being able to use the shower in our en suite. BUT, we are moving out in the new year! We're going to find somewhere to rent after Christmas. I've been a lot happier since that decision was made so am dealing with things a lot better, knowing that it won't be for long! DH quite rightly said it's better to leave now on a good note than to wait for MIL to piss us off completely and leave on an angry note.
