Apologies for the rubbish thread title - thought I'd cobble something together though!

Jellybelly these are the exact issues that are going through my head as well.

DS has been a 6.30-7.30am waker for months now (I know - very lucky) but the last three nights has been waking between 4am and 5.45am. He's been hungry in the day too. He'll be 21 weeks on Tuesday (ie he's 9 days under 5 months).

We've been giving him a small amount of pureed apple/mashed banana in addition to feeds - more as a way of seeing how he handles it, and he seems to love it. But I'm not so naive as to think 1/4 of a pureed apple is going to be chock full of calories! He's coping well with the spoon, and swallows well, doesn't spit too much out. I'm feeding more milk than ever.

My mum thinks I should add a bit of baby rice/porridge in addition to his feeds, but I'm more tempted to just keep going with the milk and upping his day time feeds before adding too many other foods, and stick to fruit/veg purees (might try potato/avocado/carrot at some point) But is that just because I don't want him growing up too fast, and I love the fact that it's me that provides him with all his nourishment? Am I being overprotective, or is it a case of mamma really does know best?!

...but I really don't see how giving him more of the less calorific food will help him sleep longer.

And Jambalaya good luck on being released...take it easy and give yourselves time and space to recover, physically and emotionally.

JambalayaCodfishPie · 08/09/2012 19:40

We're home! Grin

HenriettaChicken · 08/09/2012 21:43

Yay!

justhayley · 08/09/2012 22:10

Hi everyone.
It's been forever since I last posted on here, been keeping up to date with most of you on Facebook though.

jam thats terrible, I hope you are all ok. How can the driver live with him/herself to just leave, glad they caught the low life! Must have been really frightening for all of you. Glad your home now hope your being well looked after. Xxxxxx

Beyond Didn't know you were suffering but it's great your getting the help you need. Youv done amazing breast feeding this long so if you need to stop at 6 months or earlier don't beat yourself up, Youv given Noah the best start already. Happy mummy happy babies, nothing wrong with putting you first Hope everything works out xxxx

My news: Noah sat up for the first time today Grin we were sitting in the park and he was paying with a new toy, and he just sat there - very proud moment.
I'm thinking about weaning him. Hes had the odd taste of banana, cucumber and today he ate a strawberry Elle's kitchen pouch thing. I'm still breastfeeding and didnt want to wean until 6 months but Noahs got such an interest In food and I can tell he wants it. I'm going to the weaning class at the children's centre on Monday to get some info as I have no idea the best way to wean lol.

Sleep wise - well still not getting any! Most nights he wakes up at 1,3,5 and then tosses and turns until 7.30 sometimes we skip the 1am feed but not often. The HV thinks he's waking because he misses me and is only eating for cuddles and comfort. She recommended that I start giving him water when he wakes up instead of BF, and eventually hel stop waking for feeds. Has anyone tried this? May give it a go tonight.

Well thats it from me for today.

Hope your all well
Especially you jam

Hayley xxxx

Flisspaps · 08/09/2012 23:22

I'd say your HV is talking out of her hat. Babies generally wake in the night through hunger for longer than the first 5 months. If he's taking milk I'd keep offering it, for the next few months anyway. But that's just me!

I start work hopefully next week, beginning with a 3.20pm-9pm shift Thursday and Friday!

jam how bloody awful for you. The same thing happened to my MIL when she was pregnant with DH. She was at a bus stop when a car mounted pavement. Bravo for being so brave.

beyond I agree with the others, you need to be as well as you an be, so if you need to take tablets that stop you BF you shouldn't feel guilty about it. DC and you need you well.

Fliss how are the new mindees?

Still no sign of weaning for us. DD is end of April (24) so she's one of the youngest. She's started to really be interested in watching us eat but it's more of an inquisitive thing. I'm really trying to hold out until 6 months. I've upped her first and last FF to 210ml and that seems to be enough for her. She usually wakes between 6-7 but last week it was 5am (!). It occurred to me that she seems to have grown so much in the last two weeks so the usual 180ml prob wasn't enough for each bottle.

We bought her a jumperoo last week. It's like baby crack, she's addicted already :) It's amazing, she's really starting to learn. I only had to turn the lizard toy rattle thing once and she completely understood what she had to do. And she's starting to reach out to touch and feel your face. She feels my chin, moves up to mouth, nose and then gets excited and I get a punch on the nose :). Watching her with DH and his week old beard is amusing!

It was my bday on Friday and my first as a mum. It was really lovely getting a mum card :) she of course didn't have a bloody clue what was going on but loved me singing Happy birthday to myself ;). In fact she loves singing full stop. I was singing the wheels on the bus for near on 30 mins the other day stuck in traffic to stop her having a meltdown...

HenriettaChicken · 09/09/2012 05:33

So I gave DS a dream feed to help him sleep through. Rip roaringly successful, clearly. Hmm

digitalgirl · 09/09/2012 15:08

hen dream feeds tend not to make a difference here either. This too shall pass...

Relatively good night for us - 12:30, 5am, 6am, 7am, 8am. Nipples are suffering from a week of 1-2 hourly wakings. Rolling and teething seem to have disrupted his sleep a lot. Hoping this phase isn't a long one [yawn]

VintageNancy · 09/09/2012 15:27

Another one here for whom dream feeds make no difference. We had a nice 6hr stretch of sleep last night. Then awake at 3, 5 & up at 7.

Jam glad you're all ok after your terrifying experience!

Jelly have you tried any more solids? Because we're going away I'm intending to wait until we're back but might try some tastes on holiday.

E has had a good week - learnt to roll back to front; can sit straighter & for longer now; loads of giggles & raspberry blowing.

Getting anxious about our upcoming 11 hour flight & 8 hour time difference!

hugandroll · 09/09/2012 22:47

A is doing no gross motor milestones yet, he's just not there yet but is trying. He has really found his voice though and has little conversations with me, his hands, his feet etc. he has also found his feet.

His physio is happy with his progress, going again a week tue. He hates tummy time now though after previously loving it and I have to do it as part of his physio so I would be grateful for suggestions Grin.

A has been a right grumpy bum today, I still think its teething but of course the world and his wife say he needs food and basically imply I'm starving him Hmm.

HollyPockett · 09/09/2012 22:51

hug re liking tummy time. How about a little back massage? DD loves it and will be on her tummy for a good while. I rub my hands across her back from side to side alternating, so my right hand is one side of her back and my left on the other. Then I rub down her back from neck to feet. Then 'rake' fingers across her back, like a cat scratching (I don't scratch obs)

HTH

LaTristesse · 09/09/2012 23:02

So I could hold out no longer: DD has had some food. Decided to give BLW a bash this time, so she's had a whole variety of bits this week. Bit sad that she's growing so quickly. I'm gonna miss that biscuity bf bottom!

Jellybellyrbest · 09/09/2012 23:06

Digi & Vintage (& anyone else who's still doing regular night feeds) I take my hat off to you. Also feel a bit ashamed that I've been complaining about the odd night with 2 feeds.....:-/

Em did sleep last night (22.15-06.30) after a day with no solids. And none today either. The two times she got s'thing it was in addition to her B'milk & I can't help but worry that the unsettled evenings were due to digestive problems.....so from now on it'll be nibbles & tastes till she's really clearly ready! Funny tonight though: Em was in the Bumbo at the table & DD2 was eating a banana sandwich. She was completely mimicking the chewing action DD2 was making while she ate!!

Am really impressed with all the sitting babies!! Emily's nowhere near sitting yet. She much prefers tummy or back; doesn't like sitting in Bumbo/High Chair or standing in her Graco Entertainer. And she HATES her carseat. Worried there's s'thing wrong with her hip....rang the hosp the other day & we'll have the appointment soon. (she was referred for an xray due to an extra leg crease & assymetry of other creases in her thighs.

Henrietta: we have been spoiled by our good sleepers!! I'll be thinking of you if I'm up at 05.30 Tom ;-)

Jam-hope you & Nancy & Dd1 are ok!

justhayley · 09/09/2012 23:41

so I brought a bottle of water to bed last night, I attempted to give it to Noah instead if the boob but he wasn't having it & just head butted my boob till I gave in. We got past the 1am wake without a feed but by 3 I was leaking everywhere so it suited both of us to bf. How on earth do you stop breast feeding! I don't plan to yet,but when iv been away from Noah I fill up so quickly leak everywhere and it's sooooo painful - cant imagine stopping ever!!

Looking at swimming lessons, has anyone been to either the little fishes or water babies classes yet? I really want Noah to be confident in the water. I'm a rubbish swimmer - well I can swim but hate going under (fear from 3 horrible childhood drowning episodes). I don't want him to pick up on my irrational fear so want to get him confident in the water ASAP! Scared that I won't be able to put him under myself though Blush

Didn't have anymore sitting up today think yesterday was a one off lol

Anyway off to sleep for an hour now

Night all xx

Oh ps dream feeds make no difference here either

HenriettaChicken · 09/09/2012 23:56

I think you're right Jelly - we're very spoiled! DS went down at 9 but just woke up. Cries sounded like tummy pain to me so will try complete EBF tomorrow. It's also his first night in travelcot. Using it in our room till 6m as he's outgrown Moses basket. Did wonder if bashing basket In sleep contributed to waking.,. Not so sure now! Here's to a grand night for all!

hugandroll · 10/09/2012 00:17

Thanks holly I'll try that tomorrow.

I meant hug!! Sorry, was harking back to your old username with my sleep deprivation. Blush

marshmallowpies · 10/09/2012 08:46

LaTris so it's not just me that thinks it smells biscuity then?!

Still got dirrheoa going on here and although it's not as bad as it was, DD still had nasty nappy rash Saturday & yesterday and was screaming every time she had a nappy change. Put lots of cream on & it's looking much better this morning.

Bit fed up though, as I can't really make any plans for the week - don't want to risk giving a bug to other babies so will have to quarantine ourselves a bit if things don't improve.

Oh and I got woken by a crying baby at 5am today but who wasn't hungry - think she might have just had a bad dream and needed a cuddle! She went straight back to sleep and I lay awake for another hour...grrr!

newmummyvicky · 10/09/2012 16:30

Hi ladies,

Well that's our hectic wk end over, the christening went sooooooo well, L was a angel and so good the whole time. she was really passed round from piller to post! I did thought the day before she was gonna blow a raspberry at the vicar when the holly water went over her head, but she was full of smiles. Lol.
It brought a tear to eye watching her, it was lovely :)

She is grabbing everything, clothes, faces, my nose, mouth and hair. She grabbed my friends babies face and made her cry. Oops! Munching on everything too, so def teething.

Nights are getting easier- can I say that???? touch wood.......
She only tents to wake twice on the odd occasion 3 times. A dream feed works- now and again at 10pm if I do one.
we have a family meal on sat night so didn't get home till 1030-11. Fed her awake and put her down at 11pm she slept through till 445, I woke at 3am wondering why she wasn't up! Hehe. I reckon that's the best night yet. Then I put her back and she woke at 845 christening day. It meant me and dh got ready before she was up and she was fresh for church :) :):)

Last night feeds at 730pm, 12, 230, and 545. But she is getting better. I've found I've dropped two bf's so doing 6 per day now. Two at night and day time 10am, 1pm, and 4pm then 730-8pm before bed.
Hayley hopefully Noah will drop some night feeds when you start solids, like lyra has. She has breakfast of porridge and tea of fruit/veg. It has made a difference. I feel im not bfeeding as much.
Have to agree with fliss about water at night. L would go mad if I offered it! Bf or just cuddles back off for her!
She still won't take bottle, and not really taking any cups of water in the day either. Oh well!

newmummyvicky · 10/09/2012 16:37

fliss great news about your work!
holly I agree with U about the jumparoo being like baby crack- dd is def addicted to hers!

Flisspaps · 10/09/2012 16:39

LaT and marshmallow we decided on the smell of cake batter in this house Grin

vicky Glad the Christening went well. Looked like it was a wonderful day :) The church DH wants only does them every other month, on the fourth Sunday, and not between December and March, so he's going to be arranging DS's Christening for the end of April!

Gave E some avocado to play with last night at dinner. It went in her mouth and out again but she enjoyed playing with it and she definitely got to taste it. And I think she liked that she was participating in the meal rather than just watching us eat. Won't be doing anything in earnest for a while but it was fun watching what she did with it. Even though I'm very keen on BLW I will probably mix it with a bit of spoon feeding and see what she prefers.

Looks like you had a fabulous day vicky :)

E will easily go 8 hours without nursing overnight but will wake about an hour after going to bed (bed is around 8pm) and at about 1am. She goes back to sleep almost instantly after I've comforted her though so I know she's not hungry then (sometimes on good nights she skips both those wakings). She then nurses at around 4am and up for the day around 7. Interestingly she doesn't wake so often on nights where she's had a catnap at around 5.30pm but she can't always be persuaded to take it.

holly & vicky - E adores her jumperoo too. In fact she's in it right now while I mumsnet catch up with some computer things.
