Here you go! Sorry for crappy title. My one chance in the limelight and I can't think of anything good and I have to go and collect J from nursery right now...

So sorry about fil trudy :( Very sad

-23??? Shock I can't imagine how cold that would feel! I thought -18 in Centre Parcs last Christmas was bad!!

Saw on fb that Fong has been up since ridiculous o'clock tsc, how is he?

Course was good thanks! It was a lot of paperwork with it being the 1st session but I got a feel for what we'll be doing and I think because I am obsessed with food I'm going to love it. It's only NVQ level1 so very basic, but so long as there are enough get through it and want to progress, we'll move onto level 2 probably in September.

I already have homwork re food preparation!

Well it's 7:52am, I'd better get my arse into gear!

DesperateHousewife21 · 07/02/2012 08:16

Well after D not having a nap yesterday he slept alot better. He slept solidly from half 7-11 which is much better for him, he's usually awake at least twice before I go to bed.

Is he too young to drop his nap completely though? It's not doing him any favours and he's no different whether he has one or not.
It just means its a long day for me but I'd rather that and have him sleeping better at night.

CakeandRoses · 07/02/2012 08:23

horse-fucking MMR is all I'll say

Morning all, sorry so many people are having such a rough time at the mo.

Trudy, so sorry to hear about your FIL. Hope F's passport comes through soon.

MLISC, glad you enjoyed the course.

dh, I think 18 months onwards is OKish to drop the nap - but poor you! Am dreading that!

tsc so sorry you're having such a rough time.

We've had a few pretty bad nights here too - I had 5 hours sleep Saturday night, 3.5 Sunday night but got the dizzy heights of 6.5 hours last night so I feel pretty good! He keeps waking up at 11ish and we can't settle him, so he wakes right up and is then awake for 1.5-2 hours. I honestly think that if we could just let him cry for a few minutes he could settle himself - half the time he doesn't want to be cuddled or anything, he seems to want to be left alone. However because of our bloody bloody neighbour who sleeps directly below we just can't do it. If J cries for more than a minute or two he stomps around and yells "SHUT THE FUCK UP" or "WILL YOU PLEASE KEEP YOUR CHILD QUIET" or whatever. I know it's antisocial really to let your child cry in a flat with bad sound insulation but if it was just for a few minutes and meant we all got a peaceful night after that you'd think it would be OK.

When he's at that awake stage I like to bring him into our bed as it means I can be lying down while I feed him/pat his back/whatever, but he just will not settle there. It's so frustrating.

woodlands Shock that's awful! He should be pretty fucking happy he doesn't live near us that's for sure.

Spirael · 07/02/2012 09:27

Morning all. Sorry to hear about your DP's father, Trudy. :( It's good that your DP was able to get there in time.

Thanks for the encouragement, I guess I'm going through a bit of a self-doubting patch at present! Will try and keep posting mundane things regularly.

If we ever manage to get our house back on the market and sell it, there's a house about four doors down from us we want to buy! I'd love to move to a slightly nicer area, but we can't afford it at present. We can however manage the bigger house by increasing the mortgage length to a not-unreasonable level. The bigger house has more potential/land for extending in the future, as well as being a lot more modern.

They were meant to fix the gas pipe and finish the kitchen yesterday. It hasn't happened again... Getting so sick of getting home apprehensively to see what has/hasn't been done, then needing to start chasing people after having been doing that all day at work! I just want to get home and relax/play with M!

M seemed to be ok yesterday after her fight at nursery, though she was a bit tired and wound up when she got home. She has some scratches down her nose and on her cheek, looks like they drew blood. :( But they're not bad and should be healed by the weekend, hopefully!

I'll risk a food plan, though we're a bit obsessed with cheese and spice eclectic!

Mon: Paneer makhani with rice
Tues: Cauliflower and macaroni cheese
Wed: Ghocchi in spicy tomato sauce
Thurs: Kievs, herbie potatoes and sprouts (we have guests over)
Fri: Paneer tikka masala with rice

Ocado are coming Sat morning, so I don't know our plan for the weekend yet! Probably more fattening food.

Woodlands · 07/02/2012 09:47

mm sounds tasty spirael - i love cheese and spice too!

BTW the neighbour is moving out this month, hooray! The landlords (our nice neighbours) haven't got a new tenant lined up yet and I know they want to do some decorating etc first, so having the flat downstairs empty will give us a chance to do some CC if necessary.

OP posts:
MyLifeIsStillChaotic · 07/02/2012 10:04

What an arse he sounds woodlands Angry Just as chul says, he should thanks his lucky stars he doesn't live near screamyboy here. How good he is moving out, hopefully J can sort his sleep out while the flat's empty.

Meal plan sounds lovely spirael! I've never cooked with paneer before. Do you just use it as you would a meat? One packet or more? I showed dh the egg curry recipe in my new vegetarian magazine and said would you try that...his response was 'erm, no I can't get my head around an egg curry' Confused

I LIVE WITH THE FUSSIEST MAN EVER. He isn't keen on vegetable curries, has gone off quorn curries, won't try an egg curry...I give up. My only other option is to buy some chicken (which I'm not keen on) and I'll only buy free range so that's a minimum of £4 for two chicken breasts (from Aldi, more if from Morrisons and that's not exactly a cheap meal. And I love curry too Sad So I'd be curious to see what he made of a paneer curry if you could advise me how to cook it please spirael?

ds1 went into a toddler bed at around 20/21 months (can't remember now!) and dropped his naps then. Because I could no longer force him to lie down and he just wouldn't sleep of his own accord. ds2 tries to drop his naps but he still needs them - one reason why there's no way I'm moving him into a toddler bed as I know the same thing would happen with him.

Mmm I haven't had egg curry for years. We used to eat them at home when I was growing up till one horrible evening we had eaten it when we got news that a family friend had been killed in a road accident - as you can imagine that put us off it for a while!

Mlisc we tend to use chicken thighs for curry as they're cheaper and more flavourful. We also use stewing beef which is pretty cheap. Or prawn curry is a current favourite, though prawns can be expensive.

OP posts:
MyLifeIsStillChaotic · 07/02/2012 10:43

Yeah but see I'd vom myself inside and out thinking of eating sausages or beef Wink

Ocado don't deliver round here. Nearest place is Newcastle I reckon. No Waitrose up here either. Poshest we get is M&S

MyLifeIsStillChaotic · 07/02/2012 10:46

x post woodlands - don't eat beef. Yuk yuk tuk. DH will only eat chicken breasts and no fish/seafood. See? FUSSY!!

Spirael · 07/02/2012 10:49

This is going to make me feel hungry, and it's still a long way until lunch time! But here goes, this is what I do for curries, using a jar of paste for the base:

First of all, I set the rice cooking in the rice maker. Normally I finish the curry about the time the rice is ready. Then I peel and chop a couple of small/medium onions and throw them in the wok with some olive oil to soften.

Meanwhile, peel a few garlic cloves, a chunk of ginger and remove the seeds from one or two green chillis. Whizz them up with the hand blender, with a bit of water if necessary. Add that into the wok once the onions are soft.

Give that a few minutes to cook (normally while I cut up a packet of paneer into small cubes - 1 packet does the three of us). Mix in half the jar of paste. I tend to use Waitrose Makhani/Tikka Masala, saving the other half of the jar in the fridge until next time.

After it's had a few minutes to cook, throw in the paneer cubes and turn the heat up a bit. DH likes the paneer browned and slightly crispy, I prefer it softer. Generally I aim for half-way between the two! But it only takes about four or five minutes, much less than meat. And you can nibble the raw paneer beforehand too. Blush

If I've managed to get some edamame beans, I throw them in at the same time as the paneer. Otherwise I add some peas later on. Nothing to stop you adding other types of veggies though if wanted, or I have used chickpeas before to pad the meal out for more people.

Once the paneer is the right level of crispy, I add a small tin of chopped tomatoes and give that a minute or two to cook. Then the peas go in, if I'm using them.

After that's all cooked up (normally as I notice the rice is pretty much done) I add either low fat yoghurt or creme fraishe, for Tikka Masala/Makhani respectively. Cream is too stodgy, we find!

I let that bubble away while the rice finishes. Once the rice is done, I turn off the heat on the curry and throw in a handful of chopped coriander, stirring that through.

Then I serve it. M eats about 1/3 to 1/2 of the amount DH and I have, she does love her curry! With the paneer cut small enough, it all sticks together nicely so she manages really well scooping mouthfuls with a fork.

Is that ok? :)

Lol at egg curry vomming, it doesn't sound appealing tbf!

Ok I'll go with the flow I think, if he wants to sleep he can but I won't make him. It'll be nice not to have to plan my life around his naps. He's 19 months in 2 days and I knew he would drop his nap early. He's never been big on sleep esp during the day, he just wants to play all the time!

MyLifeIsStillChaotic · 07/02/2012 10:56

Fab! Thanks spirael!

I might just cook it and not tell dh what it is. He's a bit like a child in that he can start a meal of thinking he's not going to like it, and therefore doesn't. If he doesn't know what it is he'll have to use his reaction to guage whether he likes it instead!

Spirael · 07/02/2012 11:00

Lots of x posts! I love love love Ocado... I don't know what I'd do without it! We'd never have time to do food shopping otherwise... Either DH or I would have to pop out to the 24 hour Asda after M was in bed, or face the unbridled chaos of a Saturday morning shop and run out of fresh food at the end of each week.

With Ocado, I do my food shop at work via my phone on the bus, getting it delivered three times a fortnight so we always have fresh fruit/veg. It all turns up after M is in bed, so all DH and I have to do is pack it all away... [starry eyed]

And best still, I don't impulse buy things that are bad for me, and I challenge myself to stick as close to £40 per shop as I can! So it's good for budgeting too. :) On weeks we don't need much household stuff, I replenish cupboard food. On weeks where the household stuff is expensive then we eat more out of the cupboards!

[/gushing]

MyLifeIsStillChaotic · 07/02/2012 11:02

Egg curry is normal tsc Grin It's just not necessarily normal to the meat consuming western world. Give me an egg curry over a beef curry any day of the week!

memphis83 · 07/02/2012 11:20

£40 a shop? My shop needs to come down it is a bit out of control at the m and im skintola, what are peoples cupboards like? mine are stocked full to the front, 3 tins high all organised to get more in yet I still shop, I swear I wouldnt need to shop for 2 weeks if I meal plan as the freezer is also full of meat and other stuff!
spirael might sound sill but dies it taste cheesy? I hate overly cheesey things.
mlic why did you give up meat? was it expense? if I remember right you used to eat meat when we 'met' didnt you? dh is enjoying less meat and actually said about us cutting down more but I struggle with ideas!

L is improving at last, we have also been docs today and he is really happy with L not needing to be refered, he looked at the food diary and thinks as I have only been giving him wholemeal this has bulked up his poo but I have cut out dairy except for in formula and he said he doesnt think L's body is ready for dairy yet (he used to rash up until 12 months if he had it) so said continue to cut out dairy and try it again at a year.

A weird thing just happened, im docs there was a woman with a child she didnt talk to me and as far as I knew couldnt see me looking at the gruffalo with L, but then in tesco she started talking to L about his book the gruffalo then started asking about him, then said she would love to stay in touch and wanted to meet up and be friends on fb! very odd, never seen her before in my life and didnt really say much back to her as I was a bit freaked out, thought it was me being overly judgy but dh thinks its weird too! serves me right for going in tesco after I said I wouldnt go back in there!

DesperateHousewife21 · 07/02/2012 11:47

My cupboard is full ish, could prob fit another couple of tins in. It's things like soup, beans, spreads of every variety!
Decided to do a chicken caesar salad tonight. I won't tell dh because he loves that and is working late but I've bought him a creme egg as he loves those!

MyLifeIsStillChaotic · 07/02/2012 11:53

Strange lady!

I was a vegetarian for a few years, mainly because I just am not that fussed about meat. I started eating fish again when pregnant with E and then when he started weaning I started eating it again. But I eat it so rarely. Maybe once a fortnight? And that's usually at mam's if she does a roast.

But as I don't eat it, I really can't understand how people could afford to eat it all the time Confused There is no way on earth I would buy, and therefore condone battery chicken and free range is so expensive I'd rather not have it! Hate beef, always since being young. I don't mind pork but find it is usually dry. Lamb is ok if it isn't fatty. I really don't miss meat and I certainly couldn't afford to buy it every week anyway. I will only buy it in the reduced section and bung it in the slow cooker for the boys then portion it up and freeze it.

MyLifeIsStillChaotic · 07/02/2012 11:55

That was directed at memph's 'friend' btw dh, not you Wink x post

memphis83 · 07/02/2012 12:09

mlic Im not a fan of much beef, I wont cook it, I will eat a steak maybe once a month or so but thats it, I like pork, lamb is nice but it is so expensive I probably buy a joint once a year! I used to put chicken in everything, but I feel the same about chicken having to be free range, but I realised I was putting it in everyhing and then realised the meal didnt need it! I get my chicken from a butcher friend he gives me a good deal and I get 3 breasts for a fiver and I only need one as they are huge! I didnt eat meat for 4 years, makes me laugh as everyone says oh no how could you not eat bacon it smelss so good but I hate the smell!

Gah! my dad is back in hospital!

memphis83 · 07/02/2012 12:12

oh and mlic I dont know how you cope with your dh being so fussy, im very lucky dh eats anything I put in front of him, he is just as happy with fish fingers or frozen pie as if I prepared something! but he needs a 'proper' huge plate of food meal, if I offered him soup or a salad he would moan he is hungry!
